No Data Restore After Upgrade - Windows 7 Pro
Jul 30, 2012
I upgraded windows 7 pro but something went terribly wrong during the installation because now all the programs which were installed before, user data and so on are on some temporary folders on C:. I guess some step was avoided during the installation process so windows did not restored the old files and settings. Is there anyway to automatically restore these files ?

I had some problems with my laptop and had to re-install my OS. I made a image backup of my HD with Acers's backup manager only to find it doesn't restore my data at all. (According to Acer this has become a common problem with the backup manager). I also made a copy of my HD luckily.
After spending some time on Google I discovered that the contacts, send emails and received emails were stored as an .eml file. I thought all was well and started searching through the copied data and found nothing. On top of that I discovered that the directory sections where the supposed files are stored, is not the same on the newly installed OS as it is on the copied data. For example:The copied data I searched in was under Users>username)>AppData>Local>Windows Live (or first) Microsoft>Windows Live but the new OS directory doesn't look the same. The windows Live 2011 I used before backing up was part of an update in the beginning of 2011 from MS and the one installed now I found on another site and then windows updated the rest. My OS must be the same as it's from a hidden partition on my Acer .
I have seen some XML files and don't know if this is a similar data file for WML.

I previously had an 80gb IDE and 200GB IDE drive and a 1TB Hitachi SATA drive running XP. I decided to upgrade to Win7 and at the same time replace the old IDE drives with a WD Black 750GB Sata 3. I put all my data on the Hitachi 1TB, installed Win7 on the WD, it seems fine, but My Computer won't recognize the Hitachi with all my backed up data. Device Mgr sees it, BIOS sees it, the WD HDD support software sees it, but I can't access it. I removed the drive via Device Manager, rebooted and again it was correctly identified by Windows and installed, but still not visible in My Computer. What am I missing? I did use a SATA 3 cable on the Hitachi (its a Sata 2), but I thought that was ok to do.

I want to backup my PC's data files to an external HD using Windows 7 backup & restore utility. If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of Windows 7 will the PC automatically backup only New data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen? Will the backed up files on the backup drive appear as windows file folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc.) or be in an encoded file format?

I have an HP s5-1200z computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I have been reading and trying different things for the last three days trying to upgrade my hard drive. The computer came with a 500GB and I want to use my 1TB instead. The first thing that I did was create a system image and a system repair disc. I then restarted my computer and booted from the system repair disc. I selected my keyboard setup and then received an error stating This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of WindowsI can not figure out why I am getting this error message. Many post say that it is because 32 bit vs 64 bit. My computer is 64 bit and the repair disc that I made is 64 bit as well. With no luck on upgrading my hdd I decided to take a different approach. I then cloned my 500GB to my 1TB using Easeus Partition Master Home Edition. Everything seems to be on the 1TB HDD it stated it was successful. I then removed the source hdd and installed the 1TB destination hdd, I turned the computer on and received an error "bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to reboot." I also spent many more hours researching this problem, I can not find a solution. Many articles say boot from system repair disc and click repair your computer" when I try to do that I still continue to receive the error "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows"I have read that having more than one hdd connected at once can cause boot errors. But I do not believe this is the case because my computer can only hold one hdd.I also downloaded the Windows Home Premium x64 from mydigitallife to try and repair my pc from there only to receive the same error.

I just won a 180GB SSD from intel and was thinking of installing Windows 8 on it. I currently have a 1TB HD that has the windows 7 install on it. My question is will I be able to do a fresh install of Windows 8 on the SSD and delete Windows 7 from the 1TB HD while keeping the rest of the data there or will the 1TB drive need to be formatted to get rid of the windows 7 install?

I have Windows 7 Pro installed, but recently purchased Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade edition. I would like to "upgrade" to Ultimate without loosing any of my data/programs/anything so I can use Ultimate's features.
When I try to put the disk in at boot, it tells me to start the install in the booted Windows 7 pro. But when I do this, it tells me to use Windows anytime upgrade!
I paid $219. I want it now. I don't want to buy another "simple" anytime upgrade serial.

System Restore will not create a restore point or restore to a previous date & time. The error message was: A restore point could not be created: An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Server (VSS).The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the Event System Sevice and the VSS service are running & check for associated errors in the event logs (0x80042318).Volume Shadow Copy is started & running (done in system events).Event System Sevice and the VSS service are started and running. But no cigar, SR still broken.

So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

My Windows 7 System Restore doesn't restore. It allows me to set them and tells me they've been done. But on the couple of occasions when I've wanted to use one, no joy. Yes I know I could possibly do it in 'Safe Mode' but that isn't an answer as to why I can't do it in regular mode?

I had reason to check my System Restore function today and found only 3 points to choose from. One from July 15, 2012, another from 2011 and the last from 2010. Obviously two of them are worthless. I understood that a new restore point should be added each week, or at a major change of some sort. How do I change this so that more points are added as time goes by? One each week would be just fine. I can't find this option in Win 7 as I recall was available in XP.

I have an old HD that I used to use for backups in a different PC setup, and though I deleted those backups when I moved on to a different HD, the backups were recoverable using Pandora and I believe intact since I never used the drive in question after that time. So specifically, I now have a folder called "Backup Set 2011-02-13 190024" that contains a 84 zipped folders worth 13.1GB that comprise that backup, and I want to restore them in some automatic fashion to see what's actually worth salvaging. (I assume this doesn't have to be done one-folder-at-a-time, drilling down through five layers of branches in the folder-tree, and almost immediately forgetting where I am...) But when I look at "Backup and Restore," I can't bring up this or any target folders - the link "Select another backup to restore files from" produces a blank set of choices, and there doesn't appear to be any way to 'load' a particular folder to restore, as I would have expected.

forum i have a question. I have a kingston 30 gb ssd i use as my windows drive, and a 750 gb wd hdd for data/game storage. I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)

I wouldn't go so far to say, I'm totally computer illiterate, but not far from it.. If there's anyone out there, who's up for a challenge I'm running windows 7. I am the administrator. Someone I don't trust at all, used my PC a while back. After he (did whatever he did) I noticed I couldn't access several files. I get a "access denied" or you don't have permission to view this file, owner info etc.. I can see a lot of the files, but their either empty now or I can't view them. I have used restore many times in the past, but now I get a message " no restore points".. I don't know what he did, or if he did anything.. It could be one of my kids changed properties by mistake, before I wised up and created a basic user acct w/ limited access for them.. I almost forgot. When I go into file properties there is a red x by my user name (administrator) Not in every property, but several.. Sometimes there is a red x by other user names, as well, but mostly mine.

I recently installed some updates in my Proline notebook, but after installing the 30 percent, it failed to restart, with the screen showing nothing (as if it's off). I then tried to restore it to an earlier time via safe mode but the restore point available is only the one as at the time of the update. I tried to create a restore point, but when i tried, i cannot even find system protection when i looked for it and it directs me to system properties where my computer's description is blank and it cannot be edited.Even the updates cannot be uninstalled via safe mode.Is there no other options i can try in order to start my laptop normally again?

But if I want to upgrade my Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, Will I be able to do it with this upgrade disk? after all I will need a fresh install (because 32 to 64) and this is the upgrade version...

I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port). What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?

However, when I try to update the registry with it I get an error message saying 'cannot import.

OK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords.
