I have a 64 bit Asus laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. My laptop recently had a hard drive problem and i had to get it removed and put in another one. My original hard drive was put in a case and i can use it as an external hard drive now. I had not done any back up or anything (new here), and now i need my data on the new hard drive from the old hard drive.
View 9 RepliesI have an Asus x53e running win 7 home premium. Less than 3 months old. Due to my screw up, I reinstalled the OS. Laptop had me make 4 discs when I first got it to enable me to do so. Now, when I go through the Control Panel -> Back Up Your Computer -> Recover system settings, and attempt to apply the back up, it prompts me for the System Repair Disc. I've attempted to put in discs 1 - 4 with no luck. I restored from the disc image, but it didn't give me the actual programs and applications, just short cuts.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just experienced my 'external hard drive' not letting me access any data. I put 'external hard drive' in apostrophes, as it's actually an old SATA Internal Hard drive, in an external case.The hard drive was partitioned into two partitions. One about 100GB large which had Windows 7 installed on it, from when I used it inside my desktop. Another which was encrypted with TrueCrypt and was about 800GB large. I tried loading the second partition with Truecrypt, but the computer locked up. In the end I had to turn off the computer manually by the power.I booted up and I couldn't see the hard drives at all - not even in Computer Management. I turned the HD power on and off a couple times and eventually they were viewable - only they'd turned into three partitions, with an extra 24GB partition as the active, primary partition. It might've been that way before but not viewable in My Computer. Now I can see the sizes of the partition in Computer Management, but they show as 0MB in My Computer, as if I'd not formatted them. When I try open them in My Computer though, it lets me open them - it doesn't tell me they need formatting.I'm currently running TestDisk, but it can only see the 24GB partition. how I can recover my data?
Edit: TestDisk Results: No Recoverable Partition Found.Also noticed file system now says RAW.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded windows 7 pro but something went terribly wrong during the installation because now all the programs which were installed before, user data and so on are on some temporary folders on C:. I guess some step was avoided during the installation process so windows did not restored the old files and settings. Is there anyway to automatically restore these files ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.

View 8 Replies View Relatedremoved the drive from the enclosure and got a SATA>USB dock thing for it. it didn't appear in the Computer with my internal drives but was visible in diskmgmt as "Healthy (Active, Recovery Partition)" but with the File System column empty and no letter assigned. right click only offers a menu with "Help" on it. used diskpart to assign a letter and it now appears in Computer but says all its capacity (except ~250mb) is free and, when I open it, there are no files to see, only a folder "Recovery", which is empty. in diskmgmt it still has no letter assigned. used a program called Recuva and it shows me some small files but nothing I recognise.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had some problems with my laptop and had to re-install my OS. I made a image backup of my HD with Acers's backup manager only to find it doesn't restore my data at all. (According to Acer this has become a common problem with the backup manager). I also made a copy of my HD luckily.
After spending some time on Google I discovered that the contacts, send emails and received emails were stored as an .eml file. I thought all was well and started searching through the copied data and found nothing. On top of that I discovered that the directory sections where the supposed files are stored, is not the same on the newly installed OS as it is on the copied data. For example:The copied data I searched in was under Users>username)>AppData>Local>Windows Live (or first) Microsoft>Windows Live but the new OS directory doesn't look the same.The windows Live 2011 I used before backing up was part of an update in the beginning of 2011 from MS and the one installed now I found on another site and then windows updated the rest. My OS must be the same as it's from a hidden partition on my Acer .
I have seen some XML files and don't know if this is a similar data file for WML.

However i now have 2 PCs that need backup performed and they just want the data so an image is not necessary thus i only want the important data ie; documents and settings important files no junk such as updates or temp files
I would prefer to remove the hard drives and plug it into another pc to perform the backup instead of doing the back up from the actual machine
My old pc was running vista and crapped out on me. I now have a new PC running win7. My old PC was backed up on a MYBOOKWORLD external harddrive that is shared on my network. When I goto restore the files, after hitting the "next" button (pictured) the sys will not respond. how I can get my backed up docs,videos, pics, ect on my new machine?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI opened my computer the other day...Sony Vaio...and for some reason the whole thing was completely shot. It just said it could not open/start Windows, and other error messages. I tried the restore disc which didn't work, and a message said that I need to reinstall from manufacturers CD. I went through the Vaio recovery and backed up all the files/system files to an external drive. I reinstalled Win 7 and was wondering if there is anyway to restore back into my original settings. I have installed many apps and have settings on each and it would be a pain to have to go into each application and redo all my settings all over again one by one.I am grateful that I was able to save all my data at least. And on the bright side, at least I got rid of all the junk I didn't need any more.

If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of Windows 7 will the PC automatically backup only New data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen? Then use the Windows PE rescue CD to boot up and restore from external HDD. I have been researching this. I know about the lack of USB 3.0 support. But my drive is USB 2.0.

If I use the external drive on the usb 3.0 port when entering F8/System Repair/Repair from image, the drive is not detected at all, when I plug it into the 2.0 port it is detected. Within windows itself the drive operates fine on the 3.0 hub. I am guessing its some kind of USB 3.0 driver issue within system repair but wondered if there is a work around. Not sure I want to sit and wait for a restore over 2.0 when it could be using 3.0!

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy desktop computer won't boot. When I turn it on it displays the welcome splash screen and then goes black. A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.
