Windows 8 Upgrade And Want To Keep All Data On Old HDD That Has Windows 7
Nov 15, 2012
I just won a 180GB SSD from intel and was thinking of installing Windows 8 on it. I currently have a 1TB HD that has the windows 7 install on it. My question is will I be able to do a fresh install of Windows 8 on the SSD and delete Windows 7 from the 1TB HD while keeping the rest of the data there or will the 1TB drive need to be formatted to get rid of the windows 7 install?

I upgraded windows 7 pro but something went terribly wrong during the installation because now all the programs which were installed before, user data and so on are on some temporary folders on C:. I guess some step was avoided during the installation process so windows did not restored the old files and settings. Is there anyway to automatically restore these files ?

I previously had an 80gb IDE and 200GB IDE drive and a 1TB Hitachi SATA drive running XP. I decided to upgrade to Win7 and at the same time replace the old IDE drives with a WD Black 750GB Sata 3. I put all my data on the Hitachi 1TB, installed Win7 on the WD, it seems fine, but My Computer won't recognize the Hitachi with all my backed up data. Device Mgr sees it, BIOS sees it, the WD HDD support software sees it, but I can't access it. I removed the drive via Device Manager, rebooted and again it was correctly identified by Windows and installed, but still not visible in My Computer. What am I missing? I did use a SATA 3 cable on the Hitachi (its a Sata 2), but I thought that was ok to do.

I have an HP s5-1200z computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I have been reading and trying different things for the last three days trying to upgrade my hard drive. The computer came with a 500GB and I want to use my 1TB instead. The first thing that I did was create a system image and a system repair disc. I then restarted my computer and booted from the system repair disc. I selected my keyboard setup and then received an error stating This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of WindowsI can not figure out why I am getting this error message. Many post say that it is because 32 bit vs 64 bit. My computer is 64 bit and the repair disc that I made is 64 bit as well. With no luck on upgrading my hdd I decided to take a different approach. I then cloned my 500GB to my 1TB using Easeus Partition Master Home Edition. Everything seems to be on the 1TB HDD it stated it was successful. I then removed the source hdd and installed the 1TB destination hdd, I turned the computer on and received an error "bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to reboot." I also spent many more hours researching this problem, I can not find a solution. Many articles say boot from system repair disc and click repair your computer" when I try to do that I still continue to receive the error "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows"I have read that having more than one hdd connected at once can cause boot errors. But I do not believe this is the case because my computer can only hold one hdd.I also downloaded the Windows Home Premium x64 from mydigitallife to try and repair my pc from there only to receive the same error.

I have Windows 7 Pro installed, but recently purchased Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade edition. I would like to "upgrade" to Ultimate without loosing any of my data/programs/anything so I can use Ultimate's features.
When I try to put the disk in at boot, it tells me to start the install in the booted Windows 7 pro. But when I do this, it tells me to use Windows anytime upgrade!
I paid $219. I want it now. I don't want to buy another "simple" anytime upgrade serial.

So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

I ordered the 50$ Windows 7 upgrade disk. I realize that Windows 7 will need vista or XP already installed for the upgrade version of Windows 7. But if I want to upgrade my Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, Will I be able to do it with this upgrade disk? after all I will need a fresh install (because 32 to 64) and this is the upgrade version...

I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port). What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?

forum i have a question. I have a kingston 30 gb ssd i use as my windows drive, and a 750 gb wd hdd for data/game storage. I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)

I purchased Windows 7 Professional through the Ultimate Steal.
Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.
any help?
edit: also i have windows 7 home premium installed right now
and here is exactly what it says:
"To upgrade from one edition of Windows 7 to another edition of Windows 7, use Windows Anytime Upgrade. Cancel the upgrade, open the Start menu, and search for Windows Anytime Upgrade. "

I mean if i don't use partition all data (Programs, user data, Images, video, Music, ...) on one partition.I don't realy like that especial for backing up Data and System at deferent times and also for accessing data from a second operating system on same PC.So I use a second partition for User-Data (Private data, schools data, ...)and a third partition mainly for Media Data Pictures, Music and Videos Most of Music and Video is on an External HD.But in the folder "C:usersNAME" there are many folders like ".APP-NAME"and also Desktop, Download, My Pictures, .... I don't really miss them on my "Data" partition as my Musik is not in "My Music"my videos is not in "My Videos". But much applications "use" this Folders for default saving point or loading point,

My Windows 7 system won't boot up and I gave up trying to fix it. I bought a new PC and want to preserve my settings, programs, etc. All of the transfer solutions that I've read require the old hard drive to be bootable. Is there a way to transfer everything over to the new PC from just the hard drive?

I built a new PC with Windows 7 and ironically my old PC's psu died just as I finished the new build and before I could transfer data! So, I took the old HDD and slapped it in the new PC, hoping to copy files and Opera's bookmarks and passwords, etc.I can't figure out how to do this- Windows Easy Transfer only works with two PCs, and right-clicking the files (which I can see) does not give the option to "send to" the new HDD. I then burned a small file to a disc, and right-clicked on it and there is still no option to send to the new HDDCan't PCs transfer files between internal HDDs

I regularly activate Windows Mail on Win-7 for myself and my customers who are used to Outlook Express 6 and like it. I know how to migrate the address book from OE6 to Windows Mail but I can't seem to find the actual EMail folders in Win-7, Windows Mail. In OE6 they are *.dbx files and are easy to find, copy and migrate to the new PC. Now I have a friend who is running Vista with Windows Mail but he hates Vista and wants me to install Windows 7 for him. I have no problem activating Windows Mail in Win-7, but he'll want his old email folders and I don't know how and where to find them?

Got a new PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) with a 1TB drive. I added an extra internal drive which happens to be one of my old 300GB XP drives (231GB free). There are some apps on the old drive (Photoshop 6.0) which still run & I'd like to use them. Can I run Windows Backup and create an image on the old drive even though there are 70GB's of apps & files on there already?? Does the backup wizard partition or format the selected drive in the process of backing up? Obviously I'd like to keep accessing that stuff if I can.

Is there any faster way to copy 2 TB Data in Windows (with a USB 2.0 Ported Notebook) other than copy and paste?
Copy and paste would take around:
20 MB/second * 60 1200 MB/minute 1.2 GB/minute
1.2 GB/minute * 60 72 GB/hour
72 GB/hour * 24 1728 GB/day 1.728 TB/day.
Is there any other faster way to do this? or.... As you would see from My System Specs, I have an ASUS G72. Is it possible for me to change one of the USB Pairs from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0?

I am really curious how to disable Windows logging. I was reading something on Wikipedia about privacy and security; and came across something interesting that I cannot find much about on Google. It stated that "many programs and operating systems are set up to perform data logging of usage". For example, this might be recording the times when the computer was in use, or some applications we use on Windows. Whoever wrote the article stated that its possible to disable Windows logging - but my question is - is it?
