So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

Mounted .iso image and proceeded to do a clean install, got till the end of the installation and an error saying: "Windows could not update registry data in the installation" popped up and reverted my setup back to Windows XP.
I don't have DVD burner so I don't have the option of burning the .iso to a DVD. I tried setting up a different partition through 'Partition Magic' but was not able to.

I read a couple threads on trying to change the default outlook account from POP to IMAPI realize it is not that easy to do, I have tried to do it by just deleting the pop account and setting up a new one but that does not work. When I try to change the default data file it is grayed out.

forum i have a question. I have a kingston 30 gb ssd i use as my windows drive, and a 750 gb wd hdd for data/game storage. I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)

So the problem is had a virus called the system check virus and started going through the manual process of getting rid of it. One part of it is making hidden folders, etc accessible and then renaming the virus files so it doesnt recognise them and they stop running. While in there i accidentally changed two of the folders names which had alot of characters so i mistook it for one of the virus files.I've since learned these are windows folders and needed. was hoping someone could post a screenshot or something showing what these folders are meant to be called so i can change them back.

I have a system drive on a workstation which is 1) removable, 2) contains 2 partitions - one for the sytem & data files, one reserved by the os.
I would like to use this drive and it's file data in an external drive case (SATA) connected to my notebook.
Will the notebook handle the external drive properly?

My problem is that while installing windows 7 the error "windows could not update registry data in the installation" keeps poping up during the "Installing updates" step, right after the "Installing feature" is completed. I downloaded the several iso from this and this webpages. Also tried USB and DVD (at 1X speed). Found great help on the SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation and Clean Install Windows 7 guides, I follow them every time I try an installation. But doesn't matter what I do the error "windows could not update registry data in the installation" keeps poping up.Since I have to keep using the laptop for work I installed Ubuntu 12.10 to finish some projects (worked fine for over a month, no problems) but now I have some days off and I want to fix this. Other things I have tried that didn't worked
*Using only 1 Ram slot
*Make sure that the HDD is first in boot priority
*Install Win XP
*Iso without ei.cfg
I'm running a Dell XPS Studio 15 L502x laptop, so no RAID.

I have an Asus Eee PC 1005-PE netbook. After dealing with Win7 Starter for a while, I formatted the drive and installed Ubuntu instead. But I decided I needed Windows still, so I dual-booted Windows 7 Pro and Ubuntu, since I get a Win7 Pro key for free from my university. I'm trying to sell the netbook now, and I want to erase my data but keep the OS (I don't need to keep Ubuntu on it, just Windows). I would just erase the whole disk and re-install the OS, but I don't have the product key anymore, and product-key retrievals I've tried haven't been able to give it to me for some reason.

I had a 2GB Micro SD card in my Android phone that was getting loaded up with music and pictures/videos, so I picked up an 8GB card to replace it. I put the card into the adapter to fit regular SD card readers, which my laptop has and began copying the files from the 2 GB card to my hard drive. When I was done and I went to copy the data on to the new 8 GB card, it said it was copying 5.29 GB of data? The files that were on the 2 GB card were almost all music mp3's, with a few pics and videos thrown in, but they only made up a tiny part of that total. The only thing I could think of was if the files on the 2GB card were somehow zipped and became unzippped, but then wouldn't they have gotten much bigger than a little over double the original size?

I have an externally connected (by way of USB) samsung hard drive from my dead HP Slimline Vista connected to my newer HP Slimline Windows 7. The old drive powers and runs and the new computer recognizes it in printers and devices but I can't open it to access files etc. I know the old drive was formatted with Vista and 7 can't read the old drive. But it's my understanding that there are drivers that should be able to open and allow me to read and transfer from the old to the new. I can't install the old hard drive in the new computer because there are no extra connections or slots to mount it

I've recently got my Win 7 installed on a (let's call it) G: disk. Before that i was using XP on a D: disk. Now when it's time to copy my data from the old disk (D: ), the problem appears. I've copied some of them files successfully, but some of them remain impossible to access. I've noticed quickly that i can't copy/move/do anything with all the files that belong to Documents and settings folder on my D:. hen I rebooted, went on XP and moved all the files which i need from D&S to a new folder on simple path D:New folder. Then I've downloaded a single MP3 file and saved it in the same directory, and rebooted again on Win 7. Now I was able to move most of them files (no sure if all of them, im still copying and searching for the useful ones), but not the new MP3 file! (300MB+ mix) This MP3 file is just an example, im pretty sure that while trying to copy my old data i will face this problem many times. This is what the message says: "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file".
I've tried to change Secure options of this specific file (just as i did with the eg. explorer.exe file while applying a custom theme) but it dido downloaded "Take Control" application but didnt work either.Any solutions to solve this problem once for good? Cause even if I would now the way to deal with this 1 file, there are still many other files coming ahead

I was repartitioning a 3 NTFS partitioned 1,5tb drive down to one partition via win 7 Disk Management tool. I successfully shrank one of the partitions. After shrinking the second partition, win 7 had a hiccup and reported the remaining single partition is now in a 'RAW' format. I still have data on the drive that i would like to recover prior to reformatting it.Apparently, on reading up about "RAW' files, the data is still there. What i would like to do is to somehow view the data and extract portions of it at a time to other smaller hds. From what i has read i can only extract everything to another 1.5tb drive, which i just don,t have available. If i can find a solution, i will eventually reformat and reuse my 1.5tb drive. How can i extract portions of data from a "raw" drive to a second smaller drive?

Im wondering whats a good way to get data from a hard drive? My current computer doesnt work and i have a 2nd HDD that ive had for a year and want to get the data from, ive booted from it and it just lagged so bad i think because of all the drivers needing to be installed into the pc for it. Should i just wait for my new computer and attach it as a secondary drive? or is there some way i can do like a data transfer without it being in a computer?

I am planning on getting a 256 GB Samsung 840 pro SSD, but I have some questions first. I plan on using it for my OS and my programs and games. How would I move that to the SSD? Is there anything else that would see a speed increase if moved to the drive? What would my libraries (videos, pictures, music) be like if my media was stored on my HDD? Is there anything else I should know before I buy one

Im not sure if this is the right section, if in the wrong section a mod can move it. Well anyway i will be installing windows 7 over my current windows 7 RC install soon. Im planning on creating two partitions, one for the OS and another for Music, videos, pics etc.
But my question is would it be smart to create a partition for program files? because if i have all my program files in in drive D lets say, and then i format C to install windows 7, the programs wont work because the necessary registry values wont be registered. Whats the point of having a separate partition for program files then?
I really want to know this so that when i format and finally install Windows 7 i will then know what size to create the OS (C: ) partition.

I just used O&O's Disk Recovery 6, trying to reover from files from a drive that I had repartitioned. It works modestly well, as far as actually recovering the files, once you sort through all of the possible files that it finds, but like in the case at hand, there are over 300,000 files, and the version that I use only lets me recover 1000 at a time. I know that they have a newer version without this limit, but even so it would still require endless rummaging to find exactly what you want, because it scans the entire drive, without letting one set a search zone, and it labels all of the files with it own numbering system, rather than the files original identity.

Is there an order or priority of what should be on the SSD and what should be on the HDD? Is there a certain way to set up the user files in Windows 7 so that they are all on the HDD? After I installed Windows 7 I just clicked all my user files and dragged them to the HDD. I now think I may have messed up because I now don't see the APPData folder. Maybe that is hidden in Windows 7. And what are page files? I set up my new computer by first installing the OS, then drivers and most used programs on the SSD. Then it got confusing what should I put on the slower HDD. I surely don't want temp files on the SSD but how do I get IE or Google temp files to go to the HDD? I heard you don't want to fill up the SSD too much or it starts to slow down. But every time I want to install something, I stress out trying to figure out if I should install it on the SSD or HDD. Is there a tutorial on this? Back before the SSD it was simple that everything went to the HDD. Maybe I'm overthinking things and making it more difficult. It just seems like everything is a mess having some stuff on two different drives.
