Moving Data To A New SSD?
Nov 15, 2012
I am planning on getting a 256 GB Samsung 840 pro SSD, but I have some questions first. I plan on using it for my OS and my programs and games. How would I move that to the SSD? Is there anything else that would see a speed increase if moved to the drive? What would my libraries (videos, pictures, music) be like if my media was stored on my HDD? Is there anything else I should know before I buy one

So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

I've had this laptop for a few months now and I got another hard drive called Data which is empty, my other hard drive called OS is where everything goes and I wondered if I can move games and other files to my Data hard drive without corrupting them. And if possible can I move a file called Program Files to my Data hard drive without causing any problems. My pc takes a long time to restart which I guess my OS decides. My OS got is 80gb of 238GB and my Data is 332gb big, with no files in it.

This is my setup:
- PC1 runs Win 7 and Outlook 2010. It has my personal Inbox called Jon Local.
- PC2 runs Win XP and Outlook 2003. It holds my company data and is Server.
I want to change this setup so that I only have all my Outlook data on PC1, running under Outlook 2010. So, I need to migrate the data from PC2 to PC1.
1. How do I do this?!
2. Do I need to convert the format of the data on PC1 to a new Outlook format?
3. Can I export the account settings? No idea what all the pop settings are and the passwords, so would be nice if I can export that and import into Outlook 2010.
4. I need to have the company data from PC2 separate from PC1. Will it give me two Inbox?

I was wondering... If I move my video, music, my documents folders etc. from my boot drive (ie C drive) to say a storage drive (D Drive), is the data completely removed from the boot drive or is it still there waiting to be erased next time a new file is written to it?

forum i have a question. I have a kingston 30 gb ssd i use as my windows drive, and a 750 gb wd hdd for data/game storage. I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)

I have a system drive on a workstation which is 1) removable, 2) contains 2 partitions - one for the sytem & data files, one reserved by the os.
I would like to use this drive and it's file data in an external drive case (SATA) connected to my notebook.
Will the notebook handle the external drive properly?

I recently rescued a SSD that had seemingly failed, unfortunately i lost all data & my OS (which had to be re-installed) on my one remaining HDD until i did some research & repaired the problem.Would it be possible for me to transfer my current OS (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) wholesale, leaving all files & settings untouched from my HDD to my repaired SSD (as user friendly as possible)

Currently I have a 120GB SSD, which I wish to have my OS on as well as other stuff such as games and what not. I got a 1TB HDD, which my OS is currently on, along with all my other data. I also have three 250GB HDDs that I want to set up in a RAID0 array (made the mistake of not setting it up properly when i first installed the OS).I am not sure how i can go about doing this. I would like a clean install of the OS if possible, but it's not necessary. I would also like to keep most of my data because I have no other drive to store it on.I would like my program files x64 folder on my 1TB, and I read a very nice guide how to set it up as such with tweaking some registry settings, but I can't find that guide for the life of me now (I have no idea what the hell I googled). Also, if I am able to do this OS transfer, am I also able to partition my SSD to just have a section for the OS and a section for all the other stuff? (The OS has so many ugly folders)

I want to move my OS (Windows 7 Pro) to the new partition that I created for it but I am not sure how I would go about it. Can I just copy/paste or is there another way?
P.S. This is off-subject but I was only after thinking of it. My wireless adapter is a fair bit away from my router and it seems to have trouble connecting to the router whenever the two other laptops are connected to it. I would think that this is due to interference because all of the computers are on the same channel, is there any way to change the channel and would this be of benefit to me?

I have a latitude d830 running with windows 7 professional(SP1, 32bit). The cursor on my computer has been randomly scrolling by itself and hopping into places where i do not intend to type for a while now. I recently had windows xp removed and replaced with windows 7 because of multiple bothersome issues, but behold the cursor issue remains. My files were backed-up and reloaded to the computer and I now wonder if the "suspected" virus was transferred to my system again.

how to go about moving hard drives to a new mobo. My current setup is running on an LGA 775 socket, and it's got two drives, one of which holds games and the other has Windows 7 ultimate which I installed. I need to know if there would be any issues if I got a better 775 socket motherboard and transferred the hard drives over. Would everything on the secondary drive stay the same as it was and be a simple swap? and would i have to reinstall windows on the primary drive or would I just be able to type in the product key again?

Ok I have 2 Hard drives:
320GB with XP installed.
320GB split into 166GB (C:) and 132GB (E:)
Installed Windows 7 onto C: (after XP) and am using E: to store all music, movies and photos. The problem is, I'm running out of space and I need to get rid of XP to use the rest of my 320GB. But all the boot stuff is on the XP drive. I have to point my BIOS to XP which then shows a menu with 'Windows 7' and 'An Earlier Version Of Windows'. If I was to format the XP drive now my Windows 7 drive wouldn't boot. I know this because when I point my BIOS to load from the Windows 7 HDD, it says MISSING NTLDR. I thought this was a file that was used before and up to XP so I don't know why Windows 7 wants it.
The problem with this is that I don't know how to get the programs back into the registry. I could back it all up and import it again but I'm sure there'd be something to do with boot, which would cause my new Windows 7 to not boot. I wouldn't like to re-install everything on HDD since I have filled 160GB with programs. If it's neccassary I could do it as I keep every file I download in a single folder that is so big it can take minutes for windows to count :P (I don't keep replicas of the same stuff so if something is in a rar file then i will keep either the inside of it or keep the rar file, thats a bit off-topic.

I have Windows 7 RTM installed.
I am trying to move my Win 7 partition to a different partition.
I have made an exact hard drive replica, using Acronis True Image.
The only problem I'm facing is that when I installed Windows 7, it also made a "System reserved" partition, which I think contains the boot files.
What I want to know is:
How do I restore my exact hard drive replica on my new partition, and let the computer boot up successfully to my new partition?

I have a problem with my mouse cursor. In some games it keeps moving down. It suddenly began doing it. It wasn't a problem when I installed windows 7. It is primarily a problem in the games that come with Windows 7, so I've been ignoring it, but I can't play Fallout New Vegas because the cursor problem occurs in that game as well. I have a Logitech MX 620 mouse. I have tried to pull out the batteries to see if that helped, but it didn't. I tried to unplug the mouse to see if that helped, but it didn't. I tried installing Setpoint, but it didn't change anything.

I just purchased an SSD and a new MB and processor. I currently have Windows 7 64 bit installed on a standard hard drive. I would like to "move" it from that hard drive to my new SSD and boot from the SSD. What is the best way to go about doing that? I have created a system image on an external hard drive and have created the recovery DVD's as well.
