Just before the system crashed, a full backup was made using the Vista Backup and Restore feature.The PC is now dead.The owner is buying a new laptop with W-7.Can the backup that was saved on a portable drive, 12 Gb's worth, be restored to a new 7 machine?

I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

I built a new PC with Windows 7 and ironically my old PC's psu died just as I finished the new build and before I could transfer data! So, I took the old HDD and slapped it in the new PC, hoping to copy files and Opera's bookmarks and passwords, etc.I can't figure out how to do this- Windows Easy Transfer only works with two PCs, and right-clicking the files (which I can see) does not give the option to "send to" the new HDD. I then burned a small file to a disc, and right-clicked on it and there is still no option to send to the new HDDCan't PCs transfer files between internal HDDs

The HP recovery was on D: with everything else on C:I deleted the Data from the D:recovery disc as I had no more use for Vista and most of the programs that came from HP would not work with Windows 7. I have recovery disc if I do need them at a later date to reinstall Vista.I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on C: This left D: partition empty. I have most recently used D which is about 13 GB for4 abackup of some of my programs.I also have another 640 GB hard disc which is G: that I use as backup for my windows system.I would like to do away with the D: partition because I can also put all my program backups on G: as well.How do I delete the D: partition and incorporate that space into the C: partition? I guess some step was avoided during the installation process so windows did not restored the old files and settings. Is there anyway to automatically restore these files ?

I decided to upgrade to Win7 and at the same time replace the old IDE drives with a WD Black 750GB Sata 3. I put all my data on the Hitachi 1TB, installed Win7 on the WD, it seems fine, but My Computer won't recognize the Hitachi with all my backed up data. Device Mgr sees it, BIOS sees it, the WD HDD support software sees it, but I can't access it. I removed the drive via Device Manager, rebooted and again it was correctly identified by Windows and installed, but still not visible in My Computer. What am I missing? I did use a SATA 3 cable on the Hitachi (its a Sata 2), but I thought that was ok to do.

I've heard that it somehow is dedicated to the motherboard, which could cause some issues...I don't know.

I was to find that I couldn't do an in place upgrade from Vista Home Premium (64-bit) to 7 Professional (64-bit) after I'd already bought Professional. It seems that I can do an in place upgrade to either 7 HP or 7 Ultimate, but they skipped over Pro.
Is there some workaround for this, or failing that some way to reliably back up my applications and data?
I have already either upgraded the incompatible software, or uninstalled it, so I only have compatible software left on my Vista HP64 system.
I currently use both the IE8 x32 and x64 browsers on Vista.
I purchased the Windows 7 from Microsoft which I am supposed to receive by 22 Oct.

hello, I currently have a inspiron 531s motherboard with a OEM vista 32bit, I also have a license for vista 64 bit but its an upgrade version, is there any possible way that I can get a w7 upgrade license, I cant afford to buy the full version, I can only afford to get the upgrade version, I was wondering how much it is, a friend of mine purchased a upgrade license from his vista 64 bit to w7 for 50$ I was wondering if there is any way I can possibly do that, I prefer going from my vista 32 bit OEM to w7 64 bit that would be a lot easier but if that wont work I will install my 64 bit vista and go to w7 64 bit, I don't know where to buy the w7 upgrade.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP s5-1200z computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I have been reading and trying different things for the last three days trying to upgrade my hard drive. The computer came with a 500GB and I want to use my 1TB instead. The first thing that I did was create a system image and a system repair disc. I then restarted my computer and booted from the system repair disc. I selected my keyboard setup and then received an error stating �This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows�I can not figure out why I am getting this error message. Many post say that it is because 32 bit vs 64 bit. My computer is 64 bit and the repair disc that I made is 64 bit as well. With no luck on upgrading my hdd I decided to take a different approach. I then cloned my 500GB to my 1TB using Easeus Partition Master Home Edition. Everything seems to be on the 1TB HDD it stated it was successful. I then removed the source hdd and installed the 1TB destination hdd, I turned the computer on and received an error "bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete to reboot." I also spent many more hours researching this problem, I can not find a solution. Many articles say boot from system repair disc and click repair your computer" when I try to do that I still continue to receive the error "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows"I have read that having more than one hdd connected at once can cause boot errors. But I do not believe this is the case because my computer can only hold one hdd.I also downloaded the Windows Home Premium x64 from mydigitallife to try and repair my pc from there only to receive the same error.

I loaded the 32 bit by mistake. Is there as way to correct this or is it even necessary. The machine is an older Acer Aspire running the 32 bit Vista OS.
My plan is to buy a new HD because I think the existing HD may be flaking out. Of course, the machine has gone through several iterations of software installs and unistalls in its 7 year life span. So, some of the problems being experienced could be related to those circumstances. That's why I want to do a clean OS install and reinstall of programs. Is this plan reasonable? However the upgrade didn't go well and I got on the phone with Microsoft. They walked me through doing a clean install using the upgrade version that I bought. Windows 7 has been and still is working fine. My question has to do with my "Recovery D" drive. I'm assuming that what is on there is a Vista recovery, unless the upgrade changed that drive too(?). The Compaq was her husband's and after he gave it to me to fix, he called and gave me the laptop. I cleaned a virus off it last year, similar to the new one, so I do know how to reinstall Win 7. BUT for some unexplained reason, and probably to my advancing age, lol, I don't remember it going the way this has gone. Anyhow, now I have THREE instances of Win 7 on one partition, I think. At least when I booted up after putting in the product code, it asked me which of three I wanted to start. Is there a way to get rid of all instances of Win 7, leaving just Vista, so I can start over?
