New Windows 7 Computer Using OId Xp Drives

May 21, 2012

I have just taken delivery of a new Win7 computer that contains 1 HDD (1TB). My old computer (Win XP) contains 2 HDDs (both 1TB). I am thinking of installing the 2 XP Drives into the Win7 box - are there any issues that I need to consider?I am also considering a boot option so that I can boot into Win7 or WinXP (from my Win XP computer). Will this set up work?

Cant Join 2 Drives On Computer On Windows 7 Computer?

Aug 16, 2011

I have a Windows 7 Pro with a 40MB drive and a 1.5TB drive. I wanted to add the TB drive to the 40MB drive which is the C: drive. I don't see a way to do this. I have checked out 3rd party software to join them but my IT friends say that's not a good idea.

Windows 7 On Two Hard Drives In Same Computer?

Jan 6, 2012

I recently completed my first build within the last two weeks. After tinkering with everything for a while I decided to pull my HDD out of my old Dell and use that as a backup.

I then got to thinking about how it might be useful to install Windows on each hard drive and use whichever one I want for whatever I want to do with the computer. IE: One HDD will be only for games and the other HDD will be for everything else I want to do. I've done a few searches and found conflicting results. To add to this problem I returned my Gygabyte MOBO for a different model. I know I will have to reformat my current HDD that Windows is installed on. So here is the twist.

When I get the new MOBO hooked up I want to use my old Dell HDD as my primary HDD because it is bigger. Since Microsoft thinks Windows is installed on the other HDD and different MOBO what will happen with I install it on a new HDD and new MOBO? It would be essentially the same as installing it on a different computer which is obviously not something Microsoft wants happening. How is this done?

Now, given that I get that to work can I then disconnect my primary HDD and plug in my second HDD, boot from disc and install all over again. I have no problem going back and forth disconnecting and connecting which HDD I want to use when i boot up if I cannot have them both hooked up to the MOBO, but I assume I can and will just choose which to boot from in BIOS. I do not plan on moving data between the two drives as I will use an external HDD for any data backup that I might need.

Loading Windows 7 On Two Separate HDD Drives, Same Computer

Dec 1, 2010

I have a question regarding the install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I've done this on one HDD successfully and due to conflicts with additional software I wish to reinstall Windows 7 on a completely new HDD (on the same machine). This way I can keep both programs separate also leaving me with an additional OS in case the other fails. I plan to use the BIOS to switch to the other drive (boot order) when I wish to use the other software on occassion. I plan on backing up my files onto an external drive. So my question is as such, can I load Windows 7 onto a separate drive and switch the drive of which to boot from to achieve my goal?

Windows 7 Shuts Down - Computer Stays On (Drives / RAM And Fans)

Jul 19, 2011

I shut down windows 7, and it seems to, but the computer fans / lights / drives /Ram all still have power. I tried searching my power options and making sure everything was set properly, etc. I even re-flashed my bios. I didn't make any major changes like add new hardware / software, only some windows updates that I've now rolled-back. It looks like one or two people just had to adjust a power setting, but that does not seem to be my issue. I don't want to re-install windows.

Windows 7 64 Pro
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
AMD Althlon II x 3 435
4.0 Gigs Crucial Ram (1600)
WD Caviar .5 tb drive

Two Hard Drives Already Loaded XP/Windows 7-Install Into One Computer?

Apr 10, 2012

I have a new computer that runs Windows7 64 bit. I have an older computer hard drive that has XP.I needed something from the old hard drive and hooked it up with the cables from the Windows 7 hard drive and it booted up and ran. I've since gone back to using the Windows 7 hard drive. How do I proceed to add that second hard drive running XP to the new computer so I can have the option of running either OS? I've read through some posts, but they all presume you are installing the OS to new clean hard drives, not have them already installed. Is it as simple as hooking the XP drive into the computer as a second drive and booting it up? Do I need to change some external setting on the hard drive to have it recognized as a slave? Will Windows 7 automatically change the boot to recognize the second OS and allow a choice at startup?

Newly Built Computer - Windows Backup Won't See Hard Drives

Nov 23, 2012

I have built many computers but am having a little bit of a problem with some things and my new one. My new install went great. All programs installed without a hitch. Fast and furious is the way it went to get everything installed. Now, after a week or so I have started having a couple glitches. When I go to install a new program or update it the program just sits there for 4 or 5 minutes before doing anything and then finally starts to do its thing. The other issue is that I am trying to do a backup and image clone to get my new system backed up. The problem there is that the windows backup won't see my hard drives. I then tried Norton Ghost and the same thing happened. What is causing this?

Windows XP Computers Disconnect From Shared Drives On Windows 7 Computer

May 14, 2012

On this network there are three Windows 7 machines and two Windows XP machines. One of the Windows 7 machines is acting as a server providing all the other computers with shared folders that they network to via the "map network drive feature". The two Windows 7 machines connect to this central Windows 7 machine no problem. But the XP machines will sometimes lose connection to the network drives when accessed. They cannot see the network drives until the central Windows 7 computer is restarted. The other two Windows 7 machines have no problem connecting, even when the XP machines are having problems.

I found this article and wanted to check here to make sure it was applicable to my situation before I go ahead and muck around in the registry: Mapped Drive Connection to Network Share May Be Lost Problem is, the article says this: Quote: On a computer that runs one of the versions of Windows that is listed at the beginning of this article... There aren't any versions of Windows listed anywhere in the article, or none that I can find. In addition to that, it doesn't specify whether I'm supposed to be doing this on the server end or the client end. I would assume the client end but it's just another thing I want to make sure of before I go ahead and do it.

No Drives Displayed In Computer

Jul 3, 2009

Just upgraded to Windows 7 today and have been totally loving it! Its so much faster than Vista.

I just have one major problem that has been bothering me. I dont know whether its a bug or just a noob mistake on my part but I am unable to see any drives whatsoever in the "computer" folder. I have tried disabling/enabling the "Show empty drives" thing but to no avail.

It would be great if someone could help me out with this issue.

Extra Drives Under My Computer

Aug 7, 2009

In the screen shot, C, E, and F are legit volumes/drives. I have no idea what this Local Disk 'Q' is. I try to open it, says not accessible (and it shouldnt be because it doesnt exist)

Also, Removable Storage, I have 1 DVD drive, the rest G - L are bogus. One of those is listed as a BD-ROM which I dont have either.

Why are these listed when they dont exist?

Moving Drives From Old Computer?

Feb 2, 2012

I had a computer built for me that includes a new 1TB drive running Windows 7 64-bit for the OS and I would like to move over the drives from my old computer to be used as storage drives. Here's my questions:

1. I have a 750GB drive from my old computer that was running the OS after installing it what is the procedure to reformat it for a storage drive?

2. I also have a 500GB drive from my old computer that was being used as a storage after installing it will my backed up files still be intact or could Windows somehow delete those files?

3. Since my old computer still has a Windows 7 license tied to it I might put in an old drive, load Windows, and either sell it cheap or give it away. When you load Windows with the intention of someone else being the End User do you just quit the install a certain point along the way?

Computer Won't Recognize Disk Drives

Jun 15, 2011

I have switched CPUs in order to upgrade my system, but I have copied over all the important files from my old computer. The current CPU was used by my dad before me and worked perfectly. It runs on Windows 7. However, since unplugging the tower and moving it back to my room, it no longer recognizes any of my CD/DVD drives. They are both functioning, turning on and opening and closing, but they are not listed under COMPUTER. I have tried several fixes on this site including merging my registry with a file on Notepad and running a program called cdgone but it still doesn't work. When my computer boots up I go to a screen with F2 that allows me to view my system. The drivers are listed as off but when I switch them over the computer will not let me. [code]

External USB Drives Not Recognizable In My Computer

Aug 4, 2009

After searching this forum and googling everything I could think of, I still can not find a solution.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 (Yeah I know, probably not the best machine for Windows 7) and any type of USB drive I put into a USB port will not show up in My Computer but it does show up in Device Manager and Disk Management. However, my iPhone will connect just fine.

I have checked all the drivers and they are up to date. I went to the Western Digital (my non accessible External Hard Drive) site and there were no new drivers for the drive. I un installed all of the USB Root Hubs and then re installed them. I have basically tried everything thing that I found after googling.

Computer Hard Drives Started Clicking

Feb 23, 2012

Recently my computer's hard drives started clicking, both of them. I wasn't able to copy off my files or boot up as it would constantly freeze. So in order to save my data I bought a sata to usb cable to connect to my laptop to copy off the data. When I connected it I was able to save all my data and the hard drive didn't freeze one bit...a friend of mine suggested that it wasn't the hard drive but in fact the power supply that was causing it. Could it really be that or is my HD really dying or is it something else?

I recently noticed an issue when trying to connect to external hard drives. Initially noted that it wasn't showing in 'my computer' and so assumed I had driver issues and sought to update them from Dell's site. After doing so there was still no change, but noted that It was appearing in 'device manager'.I even tried updating the USB hubs from the Device Manager, and it states that they are all up-to-date with the correct drivers. Both external hard drives that i have tried has worked on other PC's so i assume that mine is the issue.

Wake Computer Without Waking External Hard Drives

Jul 25, 2011

I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have 4 external hard drives attached (not the best way, but until I can afford a server, the only way). I am using my computer as a media center only. When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds). Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

Windows 7 Drives Under "Computer"

Mar 29, 2011

Windows 7 Drives in My Computer I have many Windows 2008 R2 servers running as my DCs. I created a drive mapping group policy on one of the 2008 servers to map my network drives in my AD environment. My Windows XP machines work great 100% of the time. In Windows 7, this is not the case. I cannot see the drive letters listed when I click "Computer" but if I go out to DOS and look at may mapped drives using the net use command I can see all the drives I have defined in my drive mapping policy. I can also see the drive letters within programs like Word and Excel. I just cannot see them listed within My Computer. I looked on the web and I found this about a Reg setting and hiding drive letters. The following settings are not in play.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoDrives"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
"NoDrives"=-

I can add drives using "Computer" ,Map to the network drive, click Reconnect at Login and the drives then will show up for me each time I login. I have about 150+ Windows 7 machines out in the field and I need to deploy about another 300 or so soon but the drive letters not showing up in "Computer" is holding me back.
