Windows 7 Shuts Down - Computer Stays On (Drives / RAM And Fans)
Jul 19, 2011
I shut down windows 7, and it seems to, but the computer fans / lights / drives /Ram all still have power. I tried searching my power options and making sure everything was set properly, etc. I even re-flashed my bios. I didn't make any major changes like add new hardware / software, only some windows updates that I've now rolled-back. It looks like one or two people just had to adjust a power setting, but that does not seem to be my issue. I don't want to re-install windows.
Windows 7 64 Pro
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
AMD Althlon II x 3 435
4.0 Gigs Crucial Ram (1600)
WD Caviar .5 tb drive

When I shut down Windows 7 x64 Pro, windows shut downs normally, power to screen turns off, but power to PC stays on, fans run. I have to force complete shut down by holding in the power button.
This issue is sporatic. Sometimes the PC shuts down completely, other times it does as described above. This issue started ocurring AFTER I installed a Crucail M4 SSD with a clean Windows 7 install. No other hardware changes.
Research lead me to changing the IEEE Power Managment to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." This solution did not work for me.
My System: Dell XPS 435 MT, ATI Radeon 4850 Graphics Card.

I am little bit worried about my harddrive. Previously I had 80 gb harddrive and then I upgraded it to 320 gb. I have dell latitude d630 laptop with two operating system. Windows 7 and XP. When I use Windows 7 then my computer specially hard drive light stays on and mouse is busy and I have to restart my laptop however in my XP this problem is never seen. I also installed vista and deep formatted the hard drive but the problem still persists in windows 7. The system is normal but when I surf internet via mozilla or chrome. This problem arises. I have done everytrouble shooting I can chkdsk and everything but when I use chkdsk in my western digital harddrive, it says error. I am thinking its harddrive issue what do u say?

This is for my sister's computer and she keeps telling me the computer crashes. Recently she had a similar issue where the computer screen would go black after weird artifact flashing and whatnot so I thought it was driver related, or GPU related. I swapped her old card for a new 285 GTX, but it's still doing it. Testing out several drivers as well as programs to test if the GPU is faulty it gives no clear sign that it's the GPU. I tested out the CPU as well, and the RAM sticks but to avail they're all healthy fully function parts.
I did a complete OS reinstall for her to rule out if it's any software related issues, but yet again the computer crashes. It doesn't give any errors when turning back on and acts like normal and this happens at random times, sometimes in an hour, or in a couple days. Lately it's been getting worse, and I've come to suspect it might be her motherboard, but that's just my guess after ruling out the other hardware related things.
EDIT: Oh and I got her a power supply too, so it can't be it.

If I let the computer sit unused, the screen goes black, as most monitors would; however, the screen stays dark when I move the mouse or hit buttons or something. Similarly, if I close the lid of my laptop when its turned on, and then open the lid, the screen stays black. Not only that, but when I closed the lid of the laptop, the computer never turned off. It was still running.I reset the power options to default as well, so there is nothing wrong there. Perhaps I should also mention that the screen successfully turns off and on in safe mode?
edit: Just tried a system restore to two weeks ago and the system crashed. Both times.

Over the past few months I began having this recurring problem where the computer goes into sleep mode, next I click the mouse to wake it and the lights and fans go on but the screen stays black. I then have to perform a hard restart where I was usually getting the "start in safe mode" screen, but lately I have also been getting BSODs.

most of the time I can sleep my computer and wake it up normally. Sometimes, though, when I come back it is actually shut down. When I restart, Windows 7 informs me that it has recovered from a serious error.A few days ago I watched this happen. I had slept my computer, and through no prompting of my own it started to wake up. The screen blinked on, and just as fast it went away. The computer shut itself down in a not-very-normal fashion.I did a bit of research here, but didn't find anything helpful. I did see how to attach log files and such, though, so here they are.

I'm doing a clean install of win 7 64 bit off of an official cd. Part of the install goes well. It gets to 100%, reboots, goes to a screen that says it's loading settings. Then it gets to the completing installation phase and always at the same time, it shuts down. I'll hear the CD stop in my computer, then five seconds later, the computer just shuts off and I'll hear a faint beep. There's no warning message on the screen first. If I turn it on again, Windows will give the error that it restarted during install and I'll have to start over.

have my bootable copy of windows 7 Home Premium on a disk and I am attempting a clean install since I got a nasty virus which corrupted my previous copy of windows vista ultimate :/
I start the computer and choose to boot from the disk and it takes a while but eventually it comes up with the setup screen. I choose my language and all that and make sure to format the hdd before i start the install. The install starts fine and ventually the computer restarts. Upon reloading the screen says something about registry files and then it goes back to the setup screen showing that has almost completed installation and then it restarts again.
The difference this time is that when the computer comes back on it goes the "windows wasn't shutdown correctly" and asks if i want to start in safe mode or just normally. If i coose safe mode it loads but says "windows cannot complete installation in safe mode" and if i choose smart normally it just keeps restarting and then randomly shuts its self down. I dont have anyother hardware attached other than the screen, keyboard and mouse!
My setup is:
CPU:................................Intel Dual Core 1.8Ghz
MB:....................................Gigabyte 965P-DS3P
RAM:.............................................Kingston 2gb
Graphics:....................Gigabyte Geforce 8800 GTS

I am having a problem with my computer to where I can't load windows without my computer unexpectedly shutting down. I just got a new video card and did not load drivers for it. I just plugged it right in. I am thinking this might be the cause. I tried booting using my other video card and it still did not work though and those are the correct drivers that I had before. I have tried another power supply, ran a memtest, reapplied thermal paste and reseated my cooler. I have also tested a different hard drive and still the same thing. I do not have integrated graphics on my mobo so I cannot boot from my motherboard for a display. The green light for my motherboard is still on so I'm thinking that's not the problem.
Specs: motherboard Asus p5nd
Processor intel q9300 quad core
video card gtx 460 (old one is a 8800gt)

I use Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit, with Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 and 8192 Ram on an ASUSP5w DH Deluxe MB. No overclocking. Yesterday, I logged on to MS to check out Win8 and allowed it to check my system for upgrade. I received report that some programs were not compatible and that "NX" was not activated. I decided to check some of the incompatible programs out and read up on "NX".
So I closed all my programs out and rebooted and checked out my setup. I found no reference to "NX", but I did enable the MB to manage my fans, which I have not done in the past. Then, F10 and automatic reboot. It went through the rebooting, recognized the ram, but when it came to the point that Win 7 would begin, it powers down shuts off, with out the Windows screen opening.
I went back into setup and disable the the option about the MB operating the fans, rebooted and it shuts down again. I start the power and boot up and checked the setup and all looks like it usually does. I tried f8 at difference times, but the computer will not continue past the last post of recognizing all my ram.
I went inside the computer and checked the connections on the boot drive and just about everything else. The fans start up, power light is on on the board. The temperatures, as measured in the set up are well within normal range. None of the components seem hot. I let it set overnight and it still shuts off after the screen about the RAM and before starting Win 7.

I have a formatted hd with the win 7 disk in the cdrom. When I turn computer on, the usual comes up on screen and I press a keyboard key to load win 7. All good to this point. It barely starts reading the cdrom disk (and you can see the files being loaded onscreen), then the computer shuts down.

Windows 7 home premium
Dell Studio XPS 1645
I7 1.73 GHZ
6 GB DDR3
500 GB Toshiba
I have had this computer for just over a year and it has ran like a top. I was surfing the internet last night when it just shuts off (no slow down no blue screen) and boots into startup repair. It would not repair, just sat in there forever and would not boot into safe mode or anything. It just kept booting into startup repair for hours.
So I hit esc when it booted to startup repair, I go to the dell backup and restore, save my work documents and pics and let it boot to factory fresh windows install from the dell created partition. Windows reinstalls and loads fine, boots in and begins to update successfully and then reboots back into repair. This happens everytime it reboots. After sometime it will boot into windows fine. If I restart I am back into startup repair for half an hour or more.

Having problems with the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down functions after struggling trying to get a defective external disk drive enclosure to work. When I use any of the above functions the computer shuts down. I cannot wake by moving or left clicking the mouse as before. The computer shuts down and will not come on with the front panel power button. Ditto for Restart. I have to pull the power cord for about a minute before reconnecting. Then I press the power button and the computer commences to boot and windows initializes very slowlyI restored the computer to an earlier time before using the defective external drive enclosure, but I still have the same powerup/boot symptoms. stonooka has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

I have 2 computers here. One is a E-Machines, and the other is a custom built. Both units as soon as you power them on, they go thru the boot up process, but anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds later, the unit turns off. I've tried swapping the ram and the power supply. I have disconnected the keyboard, monitor, mouse and speakers with no change. Both of them developed this problem over night. They do not stay booted up long enough to get into the setup or to even try booting from a DVD.

For the past month or so, my laptop has been randomly shutting down with no warning whatsoever. It doesn't even restart, it just completely turns off. I can be doing anything and it will happen.
At first I thought it was overheating but then I installed SpeedFan and it's still doing it (and I can tell from feeling under the computer that it's no longer overheating).
I've run virus scan after virus scan (Malwarebyetes and Microsoft Security Essentials) but it's not finding anything wrong with my computer.

My computer repeatedly shuts down on me. Yesterday it must have shut down on me 20 times. My virus and malware scans come out clean. It usually goes to a menu asking me if I want to start the computer normally or in safe mode. However sometimes, I have to run start-up repair and sometimes I get a blue screen. The problem is the blue screen doesn't stay up long enough for me to write down error codes or anything else it says.
