Need to do Win 7 install on 50 gb partition and keep my 200+ win 7 install intact but don't want to use it as a boot and dont want to delete it just to get rid of Windows and boot. I want to use it just as a data drive. Dont want to have to activate the new small drive.
View 9 RepliesI have a Windows 7 Pro with a 40MB drive and a 1.5TB drive. I wanted to add the TB drive to the 40MB drive which is the C: drive. I don't see a way to do this. I have checked out 3rd party software to join them but my IT friends say that's not a good idea.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got 2 separate hard drives, both with Windows 7 (let's call them "Drive A" and "Drive B" ). Drive A is my primary drive that I always want to boot up automatically upon restart, cold boot, etc. Now, if I want to use Drive B, I know how to go into the BIOS and re-assign the Boot Priority so that Drive B will start up. However, if I restart the computer (while working in Drive B), I want the computer to go back to booting up Drive A. In other words, I want the system to only boot up Drive B for only those times I manually specify it. I always want Drive A to remain as my primary boot up drive. Is there any way to set this in the BIOS? (The BIOS always seems to go by the last setting.)

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy hard drive crashed. Bought a new one. Cloned another hard drive onto it. Old computer won't recognize the cloned drive but does in BIOS. I think the CPU was destroyed while cleaning the dust because it has prongs that clamped down and I couldn't see exactly where the gold pins were going to set in. Was very careful, but either the CPU is bad or the mother board is bad. Tested all other components in the working computer. Battery is fine. New cloned hard drive is fine. So I installed the cloned drive as a second OS drive in the working computer.I now have to share the computer with my husband until I get a new CPU or MB for my better, more expensive computer.Is it possible for him to log into "his" computer using "his" 1TB Sata HD, and then for me to come along and log into the cloned drive in his computer (2TB Sata HD) and do all of my work from that drive, so that when my own computer gets fixed, I'll have all the files I've worked on and programs installed that only I need on it and ready for use in my own computer, taking it out of my husband's computer after mine is fixed?
I'm sure I can go into BIOS and change the boot order whenever either one of us sits down to use the computer, but he's not going to want to do that each time, being pretty much computer illiterate as he is. Is there some other way to do a user switch easily during any time of the day when we need to share his computer?.

I have some things that work better under XP. I put my old laptop drive in and set the bios raid to auto detect/ata. It booted to 7 and installed drive E:. I didn't change any Matrix software settings so it's a raid/non raid setup.

If I recall correctly, way back when a boot selection menu would appear when I think I was running Windows 7 (when it first came out) alongside XP but that screen no longer appears with my current setup. Is there a way to get that screen back, or an alternate way to select the OS of choice without the hassle?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently completed my first build within the last two weeks. After tinkering with everything for a while I decided to pull my HDD out of my old Dell and use that as a backup.
I then got to thinking about how it might be useful to install Windows on each hard drive and use whichever one I want for whatever I want to do with the computer. IE: One HDD will be only for games and the other HDD will be for everything else I want to do. I've done a few searches and found conflicting results. To add to this problem I returned my Gygabyte MOBO for a different model. I know I will have to reformat my current HDD that Windows is installed on. So here is the twist.
When I get the new MOBO hooked up I want to use my old Dell HDD as my primary HDD because it is bigger. Since Microsoft thinks Windows is installed on the other HDD and different MOBO what will happen with I install it on a new HDD and new MOBO? It would be essentially the same as installing it on a different computer which is obviously not something Microsoft wants happening. How is this done?
Now, given that I get that to work can I then disconnect my primary HDD and plug in my second HDD, boot from disc and install all over again. I have no problem going back and forth disconnecting and connecting which HDD I want to use when i boot up if I cannot have them both hooked up to the MOBO, but I assume I can and will just choose which to boot from in BIOS. I do not plan on moving data between the two drives as I will use an external HDD for any data backup that I might need.
I can not select my boot up drive anymore from my two hard drives, two OS pc. Both drives are SATA drive, but one of them appears as IDE in Bios. What is going on here?

Now when I try to remove the 250gb drive, windows will not boot up.I tried marking the 250gb drive as inactive, but then during boot up it would say bootmgr is missing, so i had to use the installation disk then mark as active again.

I've done this on one HDD successfully and due to conflicts with additional software I wish to reinstall Windows 7 on a completely new HDD (on the same machine). This way I can keep both programs separate also leaving me with an additional OS in case the other fails. I plan to use the BIOS to switch to the other drive (boot order) when I wish to use the other software on occassion. I plan on backing up my files onto an external drive. So my question is as such, can I load Windows 7 onto a separate drive and switch the drive of which to boot from to achieve my goal?

I tried searching my power options and making sure everything was set properly, etc. I even re-flashed my bios. I didn't make any major changes like add new hardware / software, only some windows updates that I've now rolled-back. It looks like one or two people just had to adjust a power setting, but that does not seem to be my issue. I don't want to re-install windows.

I have a new computer that runs Windows7 64 bit. I have an older computer hard drive that has XP.I needed something from the old hard drive and hooked it up with the cables from the Windows 7 hard drive and it booted up and ran. I've since gone back to using the Windows 7 hard drive.How do I proceed to add that second hard drive running XP to the new computer so I can have the option of running either OS? I've read through some posts, but they all presume you are installing the OS to new clean hard drives, not have them already installed.Is it as simple as hooking the XP drive into the computer as a second drive and booting it up? Do I need to change some external setting on the hard drive to have it recognized as a slave? Will Windows 7 automatically change the boot to recognize the second OS and allow a choice at startup?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have built many computers but am having a little bit of a problem with some things and my new one. My new install went great. All programs installed without a hitch. Fast and furious is the way it went to get everything installed. Now, after a week or so I have started having a couple glitches. When I go to install a new program or update it the program just sits there for 4 or 5 minutes before doing anything and then finally starts to do its thing. The other issue is that I am trying to do a backup and image clone to get my new system backed up. The problem there is that the windows backup won't see my hard drives. I then tried Norton Ghost and the same thing happened. What is causing this?

However, I don't want to see the dual boot menu on every restart. I only want to temporarily switch to 64-bit by pressing F8 (or whatever) to change booting device at bootup.
What's the proper way to do this?
Many years ago I used to have a situation where I had WinXP on one drive and WinXP on other drive. I could switch my C: (with WinXP) at bootup. It worked, except there was a problem: In some situations C:Windows and D:Windows or Programs Files were getting mixed up, automatically Start Menu pointed suddenly to D:Program Filessomething without asking me. I had used a clone software to clone the drive so that might be the reason why they mixed up together. Eventually removing the other drive might've crippled the system even my intention was to have two separate operating systems, just in one computer.
Basically I would like to have two C: drives with Windows 7-32bit and Windows 7-64bit. So in case one drive breaks, I'll have a very quick backup system ready.
Is it a stupid idea to disconnect the current C: drive and then install the new Windows to C: and then put the first drive in as well? Then I wouldn't have the dual boot menu, which might be what I want.
Is it possible to hide the dual boot menu, have it load 32-bit as default but still have a possibility to bring up the dual boot menu by pressing some key at bootup? In that case, is it possible to remove either drive and still boot up without problems?

SSD, HDD and DVD DRIVE. What should be the boot order for these three? Someone told me it was DVD>HDD>SDD and on a guide I read it was HDD>DVD>SDD. Is there actually a specific boot order or is it based more on what you're using it for or something like that? Not too sure which category to post this thread in since im building a new PC and I think that goes under 'Installation'... Or maybe it should have been in 'Hardware'...?

I also have a 2TB HD with most of my games and other various programs on it. My question is, Can I just buy another SSD, install windows 7, and stick it in like nothing happened? Will I come across any errors because my 2TB is used to the old C: drive? OR, can I just do a full backup of the 30GB SSD and stick it on another drive and pretend nothing happened?
