DHCP Assigning Address Outside Of Scope?

Jul 1, 2012

I have a strange networking situation. Let me start by saying this situation is on a Domain, and that I am using Windows 2011 SBS and Windows 7 clients. My server has a DHCP range of 192.x.x.150 to 192.x.x.199 - and all other I.P. addresses are static. On a workstation located at I.P. 192.x.x.13 I am seeing an address conflict. When I perform an "nbtstat -a 192.x.x.13" command from the server I am given the logical computer name of a staff members personal laptop.Investigation of the laptop reveals that it is set to DHCP, and clearly the address of 192.x.x.13 is outside of my servers DHCP scope, so this I.P. should never be assigned, let alone in duplicate.I Googled this topic before posting, and it was suggested that IPv6 could be having an adverse affect. I determined this because I performed a ping on the laptop and only got a MAC address back rather than an I.P. address.

Block Access To Usb And Ethernet Port Completely?

Jan 28, 2013

Basically all i want is to protect my content from getting copied to a USB FLASH Drive or through a ethernet cable to some other computer so all i want is to stop access to these places

I tried some of the things already -

1. Password protecting (does not work)
2. Disabling USB Flash Drive through BuduLock software (does not work)

SO all i want is a concrete and absolute solution, if there is one, to protect my data in my computer and stop it from being accessed by others through above stuffs i mentioned.

Scanning On A Network

Sep 10, 2009

I am not sure if this is a Win 7 problem, MS Office problem or whatever. If I have posted this inappropriately, please forgive and I will go away.

I am running Office 2003 under Windows 7 RC. My HP All in One Photosmart 2575 is connected to my network via the router and prints just fine. However, Microsoft Office Document Scanning does not recognize the device as a scanner. The 'Choose Scanner' box is empty. If I connect the All in One to a USB port, Document Scanning finds the scanner and it works as expected.

What must I do to get the All in One to be detected as a scanner under Windows 7 when connected as a network device?

Way To Manage Sharing On A Network?

May 6, 2012

I am using the Homegroup feature of Windows 7 right now. I have four computers, configured with one account each, that are members of this HomegroupPC1, PC2, PC3, PC4PC1 configured the Homegroup and has the only shared library that is visible on the Homegroup. PC2, PC3, and PC4 all save documents to the shared Homegroup library on PC1.PC1 is basically acting as a file server.I want to set it up so that only certain accounts on each of the other three (PC2, PC3, PC4) computers can see certain folders in the shared Homegroup library. For instance, I have three folders in the shared Homegroup library located on PC1.Folder2, Folder3, Folder4How do I individually share those folders with only certain computers?

I have tried sharing with only "specific people" but it tells "windows was unable to find (name)". I have tried typing in the name of the computer to share with as well as account names.I have run the Homegroup troubleshooter on all computers and I still cannot share specific folders with specific computers. What would be the best way to share how I desire? Is there a better way than with the Homegroup or am I just doing something wrong?

Five Free Network Monitoring Tools

Mar 29, 2012

If you're a system or network administrator, you need monitoring tools. You have to know, at all times, the status of your systems so you can optimize performance and head off potential problems. Thankfully, plenty of tools are available to help you stay in the know about your systems. Some of these products are costly and do quite a lot. But others are free and do just as much and in some cases, more. I want to introduce you to five system and/or network monitors that do more than you'd think they could do. From this list of products you will certainly find one or more tools that will serve your needs.

Make A Wireless Network Completely Hidden?

Im living in a dorm right now, and the campus wi-fi is disgustingly slow, so a group of us got a linksys router for the dorm. I set it up so it would not broadcast the SSID, but other computers not connected to the network still see a "other network" icon when choosing a wireless network. is there any way to remove that completely so there is no trace of the wireless network?

Network Can't Seem To Resolve Address From Name?

May 18, 2012

So today I started having this weird error message that my network mapped drive to the server downstairs was no longer functioning. The gist of it is that this setup has been functioning for months without hiccup or problem. The only thing that has changed is I recently converted my routers over to DD-WRT (v17990 for WNDR3400). I'm reasonably certain that this is not the issue since I can still punch in the server's IP into the network browser as \192.168.1.90 and it comes up (I can also ping it, and it shows up in the server browser for the game it hosts), but for whatever reason I can't use the server's actual machine name \mcs anymore as it gives me a connection timeout issue. So far this is what I've done:1.) Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

2.) Attempted to enable Network Discovery, but for some reason on Server 2008 R2 that option doesn't stay on, so I enabled Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, and SSDP Discovery in the services control panel. This caused the machine to show up in the browser, but it still can't be connected to.3.)Double checked the subnets just to be sure, they are the same. The server is attached to router 1 via ethernet. The desktop is attached to router 2 via ethernet, but the two routers connected over a wireless bridge (technically repeater bridge mode according DD-WRT).I also have a few wireless devices that are connected, but they seem relatively inconsequential. I realize this isn't really a significant problem, but its really kind of annoying

Activity On Port But No Network?

Dec 20, 2011

Came at work, the computer was working (it has been working 24/24 second week already) everything was fine, the internet was working no issues, but decided to restart because my Antivirus (NIS 2011) crashed and there was no icon on taskbar, after restart my network was dead, but there was network port activity (as you can see in the screen), what I tried:1. Disabled/Enabled the network2. Restarted in safe mode with networking3. Removed for about 20 seconds the power cable4. Removed/Added the Network from Device manager (with "remove driver" option)5. Downgraded to another driver from May 20116. Tried another cable7. Tried another port in the switch8. Changed from Automatic to Manual in Network Settings (added IP)9. Used the Diagnose utility (it said something wrong with the Driver) after this I downgraded to another driver and nothing changed10. Logged with another username11. All services related to network are started. All the above didn't solved my problem, what's wrong ? I really can't understand - I'm a SysAdmin myself but I never had a issue like this that I couldn't solve!

Your Computer Was Not Assigned An Address From The Network

Jan 3, 2010

I read Event Viewer stating: ERROR

"Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x00025B66A83D. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address"

I do not understand it, i have set my network to static IP, not receive from DHCP server from my router. I have confirmed that by "ipconfig /all"

I have "ping localhost" with no 4 replies and have "ping 192.168.0.11" which is my computer. I did not received all 4 replies either.

I have ping to my router (DHCP Server) and it works OK.

Is it possible something wrong with my Ethernet hardware or just Ethernet driver problem?

Possible cause: TCP/IP Stack or my Ethernet is corrupt. What I can do about it?

Unidentified Public Network - Invalid IP Address

I have been using Windows 7 for about a month now and two days ago i started to have network problems.

I cannot connect to the Internet or my network and keep getting messages saying that the network cable is unplugged when it is not. After a while i was able to get a different message and the computer connects to an unidentified network and when i troubleshoot this it tells me i have an invalid IP address.

I know the problem has got nothing to do with the hardware or my Internet. I have tried 2 other router's & another modem with different Ethernet cables with no luck but my network/Internet is working fine on my laptop which is also Windows 7.

I *can* print from this computer to the printer when connected directly via USB, and other computers can print to that printer wirelessly.

Windows 7 Pro 32 Won't See Network - Auto Configuration IPv4 Address

Mar 16, 2012

We set up three new terminals this week at the office; they're all running Win 7 Pro 32-bit. I set them all up simultaneously (literally sat at a desk and entered the same keystrokes at each of them), so I don't see any obvious reason that one is behaving differently from the other two. The essential problem is that the terminal doesn't see the Internet. Here are all the particulars that I think might be interesting, listed in no particular order:

- The terminal ran fine for several hours. Email access, Internet access, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At that point, the user called me to show me a dialog box. I used System Restore to go back in time to 9 a.m. in case the user had somehow managed to do anything (though she's not an admin).
- IPv6 is disabled.
- The workplace uses Static IPs. The IP address is entered correctly in the IPv4 properties (x.x.x.213), but at cmd / ipconfig, I get this result: "Autoconfiguration IPv4 address: 169.254.95.187"
- In Network and Sharing Center, the network (which is only known as Unidentified Network) is set to type Public. When I reset it to type Work and reboot, it resets to type Public.

PC Unable To Identify Router / Network (wired) - DNS Server Address Ping Fails

Jul 9, 2012

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.

PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router

The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.

The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.

I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1

But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

Assigning A Different User?

Feb 28, 2011

I have a Acer Aspire One that crashed and blew smoke out the power plug hole a few weeks ago. I had Windows 7 installed on it. Sent it to the factory. They replaced the motherboard, keyboard, LCD cable and HARD DRIVE........ S'ok didn't loose any data. Knew I'd just re-install all of the programs I had before. When I turned it on, found that they had installed VISTA with an "User owner" of ACER. After reading found out that it was better to upgrade to Windows 7 than do a clean install, so that's what I did. Works good, except it still has an "user owner" (don't know what else to call it) of ACER. I'm the administrator, but when I install some software it says it's registered to ACER. Is there someway to change that over to me or do I have to do a clean install?

Assigning NIC In Virtual XP?

Dec 28, 2011

I do not use virtual xp at all so I am kinda lost here. I have a customer that wants to run his IP based printer from this VM using a software that is not Windows 7 supported. The software loaded perfectly. I just need to get a NIC to work so I can ping the printer at a static IP. I see a (Generic) Intel NIC in the Network Connections window on the VM, I can even ping the card when I set it up as static. But I cannot ping the IP printer from the VM. They are connected with a crossover cable and all works perfectly from 7 (i.e. pinging the printer) but on the VM I get timeouts. There are 2 NIC's on the physical 7 OS and both are functioning perfectly. Why do I not see a physical card on the VM? What do I have to do to get one of the two cards to talk to my IP printer from the VM?
