Multiple Hard Disks Question

Dec 14, 2009

I am getting ready to install windows 7 professional on my XP machine, I know I have to format the hard disk. If I have two hard drives and just copy everything from the drive I'm erasing to the other one and disconnect it during installation to make sure no data gets lost, will the second drive still work when I reconnect it after the install is finished? Both drives are IDE

Internal Hard-disks & DVD Disappear

Sep 22, 2012

my problem is that sometimes when i turn on my computer i only have 1 dvd drive( i have 2 installed+3 other internal harddrives), and my primary disc that i have my os on. this does not happen when i use another harddrive with same os on, so i think it have to be driver sort of problem. they have never disappeared in bios, only in Windows 7 on 1 of the discs with os. does anybody know a fix for this? i really dont want to reinstall/wipe my disc. and i have both checked the cables an even switched them to new ones, still showing in bios but not in os. if it were only 1 drive i might consider it dying, but when it's 3 drives witch all pass chkdsk+dvd drive it must be something else? this is a almost new selfbuild pc so i know everything inside is OK.

SSD Laptop Drives 'slower Than Hard Disks'

May 30, 2009

Being a laptop owner i was not happy to read this SSD laptop drives ‘slower than hard disks’

But are 40% more expensive

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are becoming a more frequent storage component in laptops, and are promoted as being faster and more energy-efficient than traditional spinning hard drives. But tests prove that such drives are actually slower than standard laptop hard disks.

Recovery Disks Will Not Load In New Hard Drive After Crash

Mar 5, 2012

My hard drive crashed on my laptop. Before It crashed, It gave me a hard drive warning of imminent failure, and gave me an option to create recovery disks. I ended up creating 11 disks from the option. I installed the new hard drive and the BIOS reads that it will boot from the internal optical drive first. When I insert the first CD and start then computer, it continues to read "Operating system not found". When I look at the CD in another computer, it reads three files and one folder. The first file is an icon file which reads "Setup", the next is a "Media" bin file, and the last is an autorun setup information file. The last is a folder that contains various other backup files. My computer did not come with any copies of windows.

Dell Bios Doesn't See IDE Hard Disks But Windows 7 Does?

Dec 7, 2011

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on a Dell Optiplex GX620 P4 hyperthread, approx 6 years old. Bios is most current Phoenix ROM Bios Plus 1.10 A11. I have 2 sata drives and 2 IDE drives installed. Boot is from SATA 0. SATA drives 2&3 are not present. All is well with this part of the equation.I had been running a Seagate 250GB IDE drive (ST3250824A) as BIOS drive 4, master drive, jumper selected. I just installed a second 120gb Seagate IDE (ST3120026A) as a slave, BIOS drive 5. That was when things got interesting. When I rebooted BIOS took a long time to load, and then reported that neither IDE drive was present. I then did all the obvious things: Disconnected one drive at a time - BIOS would recognize the connected drive. Switched master & slave drive positions. Changed jumpering from master/slave to cable select. Installed a new ribbon cable. Checked that BIOS drive recognition was set to 'Auto' for both drives. Results are always the same: either drive is recognized when only one is connected but BIOS does not recognize them when both are installed. On boot I receive a warning that IDE Drives 4 & 5 are not present and have to press F1 to continue. When I enter Setup BIOS reports the drives as unknown drive type. When only one is connected BIOS accurately reports the drive model # & capacity. After going through all this,I decided to bring WIn 7 up and see what would happen. To my surprise, Windows 7 showed both drives and worked fine. Device Manager properly reported drive model & capacity. I have used the system in this configuration for several days and everything has worked fine. This is not a problem, per se, since other than slow booting and having to press F1 every time I boot to bypass the BIOS "error" notice the system works fine but I am curious if anyone else has had this problem, and if they found a solution. I have considered forcing a reinstall of the BIOS but since it isn't really broken I don't want to try to fix it and make things worse. I googled this problem before coming here and could not find anyone with an identical situation on any tech site. Can I be the only one who's ever had this happen?

Question About Multiple Hard Drives

Nov 3, 2009

I'm gonna be moving from a 32-bit XP OS to the Windows 7 64-bit version. Before installing the OS, I'm gonna unplug my 2nd Hard drive where there's no OS installed, just storage.

Will I have to do anything special on the 2nd HD when I replug it in Windows 7? No reformatting is needed right? Because I backed up my files on that HD.

Use Split Archive Over Multiple Hard Drives?

Mar 7, 2011

I use a backup software called Macrium Reflect and they have an option for splitting your backup archive. I have a split archive that I have stored over multiple hard drives (because it is a very large file), but I cannot open the archive unless the archives are all in one folder. Is there some way to make a "virtual directory" or network drive so that I can use these files as if they are in the same folder, even though they are on different drives?

Deleting Files And Multiple Hard Drives

Nov 26, 2009

I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 that has become quite annoying. I have tested it with many scenarios and the issue continues to exist.

If you try to delete a file off an additional hard drive (meaning not the primary drive) the system will delete it permanently. It will not ask you to move it to the Recycle Bin, it will just ask if you want to permanently delete the file. Any file on the drive will move to the Recycle Bin with no problem.

Also, files within archives (zip files) will permanently delete even if the archive is on the primary drive.

Master Folder For Multiple Hard Drives Without Raid Setup

Jul 18, 2012

I am in the process of putting (5) 3TB HDD's into my computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) to rip my Blu-ray collection to for playback in my home theater room via a Popcorn Hour player. Each drive is independent and I will be systematically filling one drive before going onto the next. The problem is that the Popcorn Hour players communicate with the PC by specifying one folder via SMB that contains all of my media. Since I am doing independent drives, there will be one master folder on each drive containing all of the media for that said drive. Meaning, in terms of the Popcorn Hour/SMB setup, there are five folders I need it to *see* and catalog.

Note that the system was not initially set up to capture the dmp files so all the earliest ones are missing. I presented the initial problems to the original seller who recommended sticking with MSE and uninstalling Norton 360 and I did that. Another forum suggested that Virtual Memory was the problem and I disabled and restored VM. Still having multiple crashes and I am hoping that I can get real help here. I do note that all the crashes have ntoskrnl.exe in the driver stack although sometimes alone and sometimes with other drivers.[CODE]

Multiple Users On Multiple Windows 7-64bit Systems?

Feb 13, 2013

We have three medical clinics and the front desk staff float from clinic to clinic depending on their schedule. I only started here a few months ago and I am working on upgrading their Dell xp systems to Windows 7 systems. The problem begins to crop up when say a user named Sally will come in and sit down at this system for the first time.. Well, she needs to login, click on outlook icon, let it find her exchange PST and copy settings to her user profile, then she launches the application for the scanner that she uses to scan in ID's and insurance cards for every patient coming in.. The scanner is set to default settings and needs to be tweaked on color depth and double sided, etc.. Then after that, she needs to launch her Medical EMR application.. and then choose various options in the citrix client, ..TL;DR - Each user needs to spend 20 minutes resetting the defaults at this updated system.
Well this is fine except, I am planning on updating 2 front desk systems at each clinic, the user Sally will need to do all these things EACH time she finds herself sitting down at a system I just swapped out the previous evening. My thought is this, put a single system down in one clinic and let it sit a week giving most of the float users a chance to work on it for a day, setting all of their preferences etc.Once I get a bunch of them with user profiles on the local drive, grab an image of that drive and just deploy that to each system I roll out..Couple issues I am running into:First would be that I would have to register each Windows 7 copy with a new serial, which I have The next issue is, we have a mis-mash of Dell optiplex systems. 330's - 380's even a couple 320's..

Working With Multiple Monitors Does Not Allow Multiple Desktops

Sep 7, 2012

I have attached a second monitor to my laptop which runs Windows 7, however, I need to set different resolutions for different monitors, because the display does not fit to fill the screen on both monitors.

It is also noted that the display is replicated, and I would like to have the effect of having different desktops e.g. being able to use different applications such as debugging code on one monitor on an IDE such as Visual Studio, and, viewing the browser on the other monitor.

Currently it does not seem possible since the behavior seems to be that the same resolution is replicated on both monitors.

Windows 7 Across Two Disks - Can Recombine

Oct 30, 2011

I was given a Pavilion DV9000z by my sister who had purchased a replacement for herself. She wiped the two installed hard drives and clean installed windows 7. It appears that there is a 100MB systemm reserved partiion on one disk (total size 320GB, the rest of which was unpartitioned when I got it), and the operating system was loaded on the second disk (120 GB).I had a dead Vista laptop which had a 100GB SATA drive. I wanted to reformat it to have as a sppare. If I pull either one of the original drives out it won't boot. If I take out the 320 GB drive (with the 100MB partition) the laptop either goes black screen (if I move the 120 GB drive into the primary bay) or tries to boot Vista (if I put the scavanged hard drive in the primary bay), or tells me operating system files are lost (if I pull the 120 GB drive and replace it with the scavanged drive). So it appears to me that the 100MB partition on the 320 GB drive is waht the system is booting from, but that it won't load Windows 7 unless the second drive is also there. Is there any way to move the system reserved partition to the 120 GB drive? Or the operating system files to the 320 GB drive? It scares me that if either drive dies, the system won't boot.
