Moved External HDD To A PC After Power Surge
Mar 16, 2012
So I had a power surge a few days ago and it fried a lot of devices in my house including my external HDD controller/charger so I removed the HDD from it's case and mounted it in my PC. So far so good, it was recognised in BIOS, my primary Master and my former ext.HDD Slave, boots up ok but when I go in the explorer I don't see the partition. I encrypted it with BitLocker when it was used as an external USB HDD.Now when I go into Disk Manager the disk is seen as online with 465 GB of unallocated space. Is there any chance I can recover the data on it ?

Well I just got a brand new medion computer (4GB ram, 1GB nvidia graphics card, dual core i5 3.0Ghz processor, etc) about 3-4 weeks ago and have had no problems till now. The problem is when i bought the computer i got a mouse and keyboard which worked with it till about 2 days ago. I have 3 USB 2.0 and 3 USB 3.0 slots and. 2 of each type are on the back and the remaining 1 of each are on the front. Now, anytime i plug both the mouse and the keyboard into the back i get a warning message at the bottom right saying "USB hub port power surge" or something along those lines and neither device works. But if i un-plug them both and plug back in the keyboard, the keyboard works. I have tried restarting my computer. I have even tried turning the computer off, un-plugging it from the wall. Than holding the power button so it quickly flashes on and than off again (I hear this resets usb ports Link: Reset of USB port after probable power surge ) I than plug the computer back in and start it up but still neither devices work unless i unplug the mouse. I have also tried plugging in memory sticks and other devices and they work until i plug the mouse in beside them. Every now and than they un-expectedly decide to work together and than stop as randomly as it began.

I decided to move of my music files onto one external hard drive. The drive (FAT32) has a capacity of 372 Gb and properties show 58.9 Gb has been used. However I can only see 5Gb of files - the others are taking up the disk space but I just can't see them. I've tried searching, refreshing, etc. how I can gain access to the files?

Can I automatically power down a usb external HDD.I use an USB external HDD for backup only. I have the backup program scheduled to run at 2 in the morning and the backup takes less than an hour.So the external HDD needs to be powered up only during that hour.Is there a utility available that will "spin up" the drive when it is accessed and then "spin down" after an idle time?

My desktop does not detect and external hard drive that do not come with their own power supply. I have many externals that also plug into the wall and they are working fine; but whenever it is an external without a plug, i.e. the portable ones they are never found.
They do not show up in Computer Management, so it is not because I did not assign a letter to the drive.
I have tried various things, but I don't know what I should be testing for or looking for. These externals all work on other laptops and other desktops perfectly fine so it is not the externals. When they are plugged into my desktop, they light up normally like they should, but the desktop never detects them. I have tried these externals with the different USB cable I have on hand, but nothing seems to work. It doesn't matter which USB port I plug the device in, it still gives me no response.
I am running a i7 860 on a ASUS P7P55D Pro.

So I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd. I was not able to pause it before this happened. I was also running BL on an internal drive. Both were interrupted. I was able to resume and finish the internal drive. I was not able to resume the external. The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk. It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.
I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible. This might have only applied to an internal drive. I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that. Is there a way to recover my external? Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it? Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

I purchased a Silicon Power Rugged Armor A80 external hard drive to back up my computer & I can't get it to work. When I try to back up MY Documents, it scans the files, then the window says "wrong input" & "access denied".I have been trying to get help from Silicon Power customer service, but they haven't been able to shed any light on my problem. I'm running Windows 7 Professional & have Norton Internet Security. Could there be some kind of incompatibility with my OS or Norton that's preventing access to the files?

In Windows Live Mail, when I receive junk mail, it is not placed in the junk mail folder, though it appears as unread mail. If I select the message and then click the Junk button, I receive the message "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred." I tried removing and re-installing WLM and junk mail worked correctly for a while, but now the same problem is occurring again.
What is causing the problem and how can I fix it?

I turned my pc off for a couple of hours today and when I turned it back on everything was different! The desktop background is different (I think it reverted to blue-white bird puffs HP one), the icons are very small, Microsoft Word 2000 was gone, Google Chrome disappeared from lower tray! In addition, history disappeared from Firefox! (that is what I have noticed - so far). What is going on??I thought maybe that was some update but the most recent update was yesterday and was about MSecurity Essentials.I googled the problem and after I typed winword.exe- I found Microsoft Word, it sort of- reinstalled itself and now it looks a bit different.I went to Program FIles 86 to reinstall Microsoft Word shortcut on desktop, and it is there, however, it doesn't look like a Microsoft logo-as before, it looks like files .Also, all my documents were gone! So I did more "googling" and was able to find my MW docs this way: Computer-C-users-me-My Documents. However, I cannot access these documents through Microsoft Word any more! I can only find them through the above route.

Hard to describe in a short title.I have been having a few strange problems here and there with the system. Not sure if it's Malware or if I've just done something wrong.Basically whenever I move a file the icon for the file remains in place and whenever I try to move the icon Windows recognizes that it isn't there even though the icon remains, exiting and re-entering the folder which contains the icon makes it go away. Similarly whenever I empty or fill the recycling bin the icon doesn't change it's appearance until I navigate away from the desktop.I've also been having other issues.

I don't want to pin anything. Without pinning, can windows remember where I dragged an application on my task bar through a setting or anything? I like to have my frequently used programs available near the start button. I'm always dragging them over there after I open them. But I don't like losing the task bar real estate to pinned icons.

When he came back EVERY file was moved to his desktop. I'm not talking about a few dozen files, or just doc. files. But files connected to programs, sample pics, txt. everything. Hundreds or even thousands of files have been moved onto the desktop, being layered on top. When we move a file to a temporary folder that has been created, others appear.
It sounds like every file had its address changed to be on the desktop. (ie C:UsersNameDesktop).
We are trying to get virus protection up (Norton is on the computer) but obviously the computer is only half working right now.

I was wondering if someone can clear this up for me. I just finished building my 1st desktop pc ever yesterday. It's running quite well I should say. Everything is normal except I noticed my cursor is lagging. My first reaction was that "My wireless mouse must be interfering with the router." From what I remembered, it was a steady lag. About every 1/2 sec it would skip from one place to another whenever I moved my mouse. I went to Best Buy looking for a wired mouse, but hated all of them, plus I love the wireless one I still have. Instead of getting a wired mouse, I bought a dual band Netgear router. When I got home and hooked it up and all, it worked perfectly. Then probably an hour later, lag lag lag again. I messed around with the router settings quite a bit, but it's not worth it since disabling the 2.4 Ghz signal is useless. I couldn't connect to the router (and internet) when I disabled the 2.4 Ghz band.
After I got both bands up, I decided to try using an old wired mouse I had. It worked for a few minutes without lag, but it appears that wasn't the case either. So I ruled out the possibility of router interference. I tried updating all the mouse drivers, but it said it was already installed. I have also downloaded all the Windows 7 updates. There were 41 of them with a size of 114 MB. That didn't appear to help either. Right now, as I'm typing, it tends to lag every other minutes. I even disconnected the wireless connection and it doesn't appear to be the case.Loading webpages is fast as ever. I have the desktop gadgets that monitor the CPU, Network, GPU, and Hard Drives. Plus, I have HWMonitor and CPU-Z (which I need to reinstall cause the disk icon is not the correct picture).
One more thing that is very important. After the new dual band router was hooked up, the lag with both wireless and wired mouse is different from the steady lag I mentioned before. It's more unpredictable in my opinion. I can't live with it certainly as I can't see where it's going and more time is wasted trying to pinpoint my cursor destination.

I just bought a new computer case for my computer and moved [almost] all of my computer parts into it. It's a smaller case so one of my storage HDDs had to become an external, no big deal. The OS is Windows 7 Professional x64, it was installed on a pair of SATA drives on a RAID-0 array.
Before power on, the only storage devices connected to the computer were those two SATA drives in RAID-0 and a DVD burner. I went into the BIOS setting to make sure the boot order was fine (it would check the DVD burner first and then the RAID-0 array).
The first message that came up was: Reboot and select proper boot device
A little shocked, I disabled the DVD burner and forced the computer to boot strictly from the RAID-0 array. Got the same message.
My heart was racing a little at this point and I booted up the Windows 7 DVD and ran chkdsk /r in the command prompt. But before the command prompt showed up, you would see a list of what operating systems are installed. The list was empty. There's also an 'add drivers...' option which I briefly tried but it seems Windows 7 already had the necessary drivers. IN FACT, I was able to browse through the files in my RAID-0 array via the "browse for driver" window. Everything was there. Anyway, the chkdsk completed and there were no problems. Clearly, my OS was still in the RAID-0 array but it won't boot for some reason.
The next thing I ran the startup recovery tool on the Windows 7 DVD. The report showed that the root cause was an invalid entry in the partition table and apparently the tool repaired it. I rebooted and the Windows 7 DVD's "push any key to boot from DVD..." prompt came up. I ignored it and I got the following message: Missing operating system
I checked BIOS again to make sure my RAID-0 array was still in the boot order which it still was. I also disabled the DVD burner again and rebooted directly into the RAID-0 array. Got the message: Reboot and select proper boot device
It's as if the startup repair tool did nothing at all!
Again, I was still able to browse the files on the array through the repair tools on the Windows 7 DVD. It just won't boot the operating system for some reason. Another thing to note is that the OS install is GPT based, with roughly 100 MB for the "System Reserved" partition and the remains used for the actual OS. Not sure if that matters.
Regardless, I needed this computer running for the work I have to do today so I did a format/re-install overnight. Fortunately it's just my OS/Programs that I lost.
I'm just wondering if anyone ran into the same issue and was able to fix it. I have to install new cables and a new PSU later this week so I might run into the same issue again.

I'm using 64 bit Windows 7 w/service pack 1. Within the last two months, whenever I move files (it started as photos, but now it can be any file) the files are somehow being marked as hidden. Under 'Folder Options' I have to turn on the option to see hidden files, then untick the 'Hidden' box under file attributes on the affected file. It seems that the files that this happens to are random. For example, I can move a group of photos from the 'Pictures' library folder to another folder on the hand drive, and only some of those pictures will wind up being hidden after moved.

I turned on my computer and all of my icons were missing as well as my folders. However, I found I could search for them on the home button and still find them, so I moved them back to their normal places and powered off. The next time I powered on, some of the icons had disappeared again, and a few files I had moved had broken shortcuts (when you click on it, it says this shortcut has been move or changed, would like to delete?). I can still search for the files and the documents they contain, but cannot access them. I have tried a system restore, but it as I figured it would did nothing.

I have an Acer Aspire 1810TZ with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The HDD is 160GB.Yesterday I moved (without resizing!) both the 100MB system reserved partition and my 40GB C: partition towards the "beginning" of the HDD for the purpose of creating an unallocated space of some 110GB towards the "end" of the HDD. (The C: partition had previously been shrunk using Win7 disk management and the system worked fine after reboot prior to partition move).llowing the partition move I can however not boot into Windows anymore. Windows boot manager gives the following info:Status: 0xc0000225Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessibleThe boot manager also suggests I reinstall Windows, but of course the restore and rescue DVDs I burned based on Acer's eRecovery tool does not work.

1. What exactly is the function of Link State Power Management in the Power Options Advanced Settings, PCI Express?
2. What are the implications of using the options available:
a) Off.
b) Maximum power savings.
c) Moderate power savings.
d) Which option is the best selection for my Dell laptop.

I use my PC for audio production and I have a few external controller devices that are USB powered, for example a midi keyboard. I recently had to build PC due to a theft....long story short after building the new PC I've noticed that my USB buses have continual power to these external devices after I've powered down the PC. My old windows 7 PC did not do this. Is there a setting I can change to shut off power to the USB buses when I power off the PC? Or is this a hardware issue?
