View 1 RepliesI was using Illustrator CS5 with a number of documents open when I had to leave my office to deal with a screaming daughter. I was then a little distracted before I managed to get back to my laptop. To my horror my laptop had installed some updates and automatically restarted. And you guessed it my files were gone. I know I know I should have been periodically saving them as I worked on them and stupidly enough I had with one but not the others.I quickly checked the recycling bin to see if a back copy was there as I had heard that this is sometimes the case. I did find one document that was modified at the correct time and date but with some random name. I tried restoring it to find out what it was and now have no idea where it has been restored to.

I had moved My Documents to another drive but did not do it correctly (I moved My Pictures etc successfully). I need to recreate the user documents file and re-direct it to the document location. How would I use the solution for Public documents (above) to re-create the User document file.

My friend mentioned that he tried to install a Acer webcam driver/application and after restart, the profile is corrupted. We have already agreed to re install the OS. However, I have noticed that under the User folder of that (supposedly, one and only) account, most of the desktop which my friend's data resides are missing. Namely, desktop, documents, etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt used to be that I could pin multiple documents to their host program on the task bar, and I could run more then just the program itself, for example with good chrome I could right click and choose to open a new window, a new incognito window and a few other options. I did some windows updates a little while back and all the other options have disappeared as well as my ability to pin files to programs. I was wondering if there was a way to get that back since it was super convenient to have. Most programs used to have many options and recent files, etc. Now this is the most I ever get for any program.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMain computer is the office computer. Its a desktop that a person is constantly on and doing stuff. There are 3 others that need the same information and documents at any given time. These 3 people have their laptops that are constantly switching wifi hotspots. They need to change information sometimes, and need access to all of it any time. The way its setup now is 1 person is on the main computer, but when one of the three need to access it, they remotely log in and take control. Only one person can access the computer at a time. How do I set it up so all four of these people can access and change the files at the same time if they want? The main computer is being used constantly, but someone always needs a document or file while the main person is working on it. So it slows production when someone logs in.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using 7 Ultimate. Two days ago I was tempted to try I.E.9, D/L it but decided it wasn't for me.Did the uninstall in "Add/Remove".Later I realised that my yellow folders, from "My Docs" etc down to folders I'd gathered work in would not now open with left clicks, only with R click and "Open". The message I get is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing these actions. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel".how do I define my "yellow" folders in order to assign 'em to something that will open them with? If I drag "My documents down to the taskbar and pin it to Windows Explorer then it will open from there with no problem.I gather that Windows Explorer is the programme to link 'em to but how?

Researching, I know this is a Java thing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. My windows update is fully updated.I've run 3 virus programs.I notice this was addressed for someone using XP but what of Windows 7? My add/remove program file only contines the program Java (TM) update 29. Nothing else is listed as far as Java is concerned.I've run cleaner programs and these did not take care of the problem. Every time I restart my machine these errors immediate pop up at start up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy HD failed but I had run a backup just before. I restored from backup. It created a Hilda PC user and I also have a Hilda user so I transferred all of my files from Hilda PC to Hilda and deleted the Hilda PC folder. I went to open a .doc file I use frequently and was not able to find it. I had just used it an hour earlier so I know I have it on the PC but now I can't find it. I even ran a retrieve deleted files software in case I had inadvertently deleted it and it didn't show up. I have done a complete search of my PC and external HD and I can't find it.I am nervous because it contained some sensitive information.

View 26 Replies View RelatedMy operating system Windows 7 has lost all file association. I have lost it to the point that I can not repair it and I cannot open any file what so ever. I can not download anything to help, I cant even open the internet, my files are gone and went into recovery and it also said that it has no association with that either. I can access some files by going through task manger by holding on CTRL then clicking on new task which directs me to System 32. My friend who is a tech but is not yet certified said the only way I can fix by problem is by wiping my computer clean and reloading Windows 7 on. Unfortunately that the only way I can see it happening considering I can't open any of my files including recovery, disk clean up, Firefox, document, pictures etc. Is there any other way that I can fix this problem?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a school report I've been working on for amonths now on my Mum's computer. I recently purchased my own, so I emailed the file from her computer onto mine and downloaded it onto my Office Word 2007. The file was uncompatible with my version of office (even though it was from the same disc we bought for my Mum's computer) so it was always saved to autosave. In order to upload it to the school it needs to be saved to the computer and not in autosave. So I tried to save it, and got a pop-up message that told me it was incompatible but I could still save it with no problems. (i don't remember the exact wording) So I went ahead and hit "yes". now the file is missing from the computer and no matter how much searching I do i can't find it. Any shortcuts or links to it that existed before don't exist anymore.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of Windows 7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).
Rebuilding the Windows 7 icon cache has not worked in the past.
but I've lost the content in the database file of my notes in Sticky Notes 7. !
Is there a possible way to recover this? I have 8 database files, which all containing almost the same content.
I think the problem is because i have stored the database file in Google Drive, and i did not activate the synchronizing option in Sticky Notes 7. So when i was editing on my workstation computer, and came home to my laptop. The content was still the same. To day, when i was going to my workstation computer, it is the same content as my laptop. The content which I've been written last week is totally gone!
I've tried in the recycle bin function in Sticky Notes 7, but there was nothing. I know I've done some stupid things. Cause i didn't active the sync.
Also, when i want new content in my note, i just delete the existing content, and add some new. I'm not saving the database files in weeks, or months or so on (to keep control over the files) I will do that in the future!
Had a power failure during a recovery of an Acronis backup on my C: drive. It seems it happened while Acronis just started loading the backup files? When I restarted the Samsung Laptop local drive C: did not appear in Explorer. Only drive D: and my DVD drive E: appeared (C an D are partitions on the same hard disk). The recovery software was on a hidden partition but when trying to use the Samsung Recovery facility it say Drive C: not found. After trying out suggestions found on the internet I only managed to screw everything up resulting in also loosing the D: drive containing my Acronis backup. The laptop did not start at all. I at last managed to get it going after installing Windows 7 again and I then sit with only C System Disk, D System reserved and E: DVD drive at that point.Foolishly I shrinked the system disk C and created a data disk. That disk is now Data Disk F. and not D as original. The Acronis backup containing all my files and data was on the original Data Disk D:I have used various free software to try and find that specific file. But they all search by drive and the missing file must be somewhere on the disk either as lost or wrong drive letter or something.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a toshiba laptop running windows 7 32bit and made some changes to folder ownership that has wrecked havoc on my machine. I am the only user for this machine and am listed at the administrator. The changes I made were under the "users" folder, and the folder that listed my name. I don't even recall why I was tinkering with it but made a change under file folder properties/security/ownership. Since that change, it has done many things, including removing files and folders from my desktop and computer that do not show up anymore at all. It has blocked me from the c: drive. aApop up upon start up stats microsoft visual runtime library error c:program files. and on and on.
I have done a system restore to prior when I made the changes to no avail. it does the restore, but does not change the folder ownership or issues I am having. I have tried to reset the folder under options to a previous setting but that has not worked and now has me blocked from even going into my c: all together.. saying access denied. I have had no luck under control panel fixing this and have done more harm than good. Is there an easy way to get back control of my computer and regain the files that are not showing up. I have been looking for a way, similar to system restore, to reverse the changes to file ownership and give me control of my computer again. I would think this would be easy since im the system admin but no luck so far.
recently i've got infected by malwares and tried to fix it using mcafee stinger and it fix my computer, but suddenly when I looked into my drives most of the folders are missing or somewhat the path are missing. I thought the folders are just hidden but it completely deleted or lost but still my programs are intact and working, already tried using unhider and registry fixer but to no avail still cant locate my folder files.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI received a link from a friend to a video he posted on Dropbox. I have received links to videos from him before and it worked just fine. The video is a MOV file. Now, when I get an email in Windows Live Mail with a link to a video I get the error "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action....". I can copy the url and paste it right to IE8 and it works fine. I have checked my file associations in Control Panel and MOV is set to open with Quicktime. I tried changing that to Windows Media player but got the same error.
