My 6 year old Dell crashed. It used Windows XP. I bought a new H-P and it has Windows 7. I can't make heads or tails of the video tutorials. I bought "Windows 7, Quick Steps, and it's beyond me, too. I need a: first point cursor at.., then left-click mouse...I had to mark, "Configuration & Customization" but maybe "General Discussion" would have been better. See what I mean, I lack vocabulary.

I was using Illustrator CS5 with a number of documents open when I had to leave my office to deal with a screaming daughter. I was then a little distracted before I managed to get back to my laptop. To my horror my laptop had installed some updates and automatically restarted. And you guessed it my files were gone. I know I know I should have been periodically saving them as I worked on them and stupidly enough I had with one but not the others.I quickly checked the recycling bin to see if a back copy was there as I had heard that this is sometimes the case. I did find one document that was modified at the correct time and date but with some random name. I tried restoring it to find out what it was and now have no idea where it has been restored to.

lost both documents folders. User folder and Public folder. I tried to re-create it but there is now no location. I had moved My Documents to another drive but did not do it correctly (I moved My Pictures etc successfully). I need to recreate the user documents file and re-direct it to the document location. How would I use the solution for Public documents (above) to re-create the User document file.

I am trying to keep the size of Image Files as small as possible. I'm told that it helps to keep these files from getting too big if I move the Page File away from the drive being imaged - in this case , my C: bootable drive.

I have a boot drive which is 250gb (My C drive). I have Win 7 and some apps on it.I have installed Steam on my other hard drive. So far most games have been cooperative and install their folders close to Steam! However, one game in particular (Empire Total War) has installed one of its folders in "C:UsersXYZAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly".From experience from my old PC, I know this folder (The Creative Assembly) can grow to close to 20gb in a matter of a year. I don't want that to happen and therefore thought of relocating, moving, or redirecting this folder (The Creative Assembly) to another location. How do I do that and is that recommended? (I could simply go ahead and do this right now, but I would rather get some expert opinions first before any instabiliti

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium x64. My friend mentioned that he tried to install a Acer webcam driver/application and after restart, the profile is corrupted. We have already agreed to re install the OS. However, I have noticed that under the User folder of that (supposedly, one and only) account, most of the desktop which my friend's data resides are missing. Namely, desktop, documents, etc.

I got a disk drive with 3 partitions...
1 - vista 64 (50GB)
2 - win 7 64 (30GB)
3 - data (80GB)
I want to move win 7 installation to vista partition and extend partition 3 with freed partition 2.
-I though to do this
-Backup win 7 to external drive
-boot from cd installation
-choose to restore win 7 in partition 1
-After it boots correctly, resize partition 3 adding partition 2.
I realized that boot files are in partition 1, when I tried in windows 7 to backup system (partition 2) it want sto backup full partition 1, because it's part of system and partition 1 is considered critical.
Any procedure to accomplish this?

I am really perplexed as to what is going on with a Documents folder. It's not MY DOCUMENTS, but rather, the Libraries-Documents folder (versus the my documents under my user profile/name).The folder is FULL of garbage. This includes things that appear to be "temp files" (but with valid file types such as jpg, mp3)also in there doc files, png, tdb, diz, ebc, and others I don't even recognize. Some of these things include package files from the Sims series games (there were a TON of them in there) and others included pictures that I did NOT save locally (as if it were a temp file from the web)There are even many duplicates of some of these pictures. Some I *DID* save as part of a genealogy project, but I didn't save them there.I saved them in a completely different folder with a completely different name.I've got a LOT of work ahead of me cleaning this sucker out (thousands of files to the tune of 16.5gigs...seriously).How are these files getting here and how can I prevent it from happening again?

Used to be a time when I kept my the WIndows and core apps n a C partition, and my large users files on a D partition. In that way
- the C was samll, easily imaged to a second drive, etc,
- all data file were on the D partition, easily backed up to another drive
These days, with super large drives, and Windows expecting files in C:Users, I found myself keeping everything on the same partition - make those images much bigger and longer to create (unless one uses image software that allow oyu to exlcude folders) Is thee a way to tell Windows to look elsewehre (ie on another partition) for the user files its typically expects to see under C:Users ??

Installed Windows 7 but accidentally did it on the d: drive. Now have dual OS - Vista and Win 7. Want to keep Win 7. Have read many threads on how to get rid of Vista partition by moving boot folder from Vista to win 7 first but after doing so and going to disc mgt it says it's using info from C: when I try to re-format the volume. Essentially here's my issue: I want Win 7 to be on the C: partition, not the D: because D: is listed as a recovery partition with limited space. How can I do that? (or can I?)

I currently running a dual boot system. However, I haven't been able to copy files from one partition to another i.e from XP to Win & or vice versa. For e.g. i can't find any music file in my XP partition, it's like it's not there even though i searched through drive C (XP) from drive D (win 7). I still use XP more but do my gaming on win 7.

I installed Win 7 on a partition on the same drive as XP.
1 - XP was on C: Win 7 installed to F:
2 - I have removed XP from C:.
3 - Repaired Win 7. Win 7 boots fine.
Now I want to move Win 7 to the beginning of the drive but unsure how - as Acronis doesn't allow me to clone to the same drive - even though its another partition.
Is there any way round this?

I have a folder I use to collect files for a program. It is subordinate to My Documents. Three days ago it disappeared. It is not, however gone! I can put the path into the address line of Explorer (the files version - not the browser) and it magically appears. Also I can search and find all the files/folders in that folder individually by name with 'search'. I've set cursor on My Documents and opened >Tools>Folder Options>View and checked "Show hidden files folders and drives". I've tried this at various levels as well. I also ran a batch attrib e.g.:
@echo off
Echo This script will unhide all files in the current folder and all subfolders.
Echo If there are a lot of files, it may take some time to complete.
Attrib -H /S /D
echo Unhide Complete
pause
This obviously ran for a few minutes from C:
Wierd. I can get to the files, but the folder does not show up under My Documents as it should. I've tried to recreate the folder directly subordinate to My Documents, and get a warning that the folder already exists. This is not a total loss since I can get to the folder, but would be nice to simply open My Documents, scroll down and find it.

I am using 7 Ultimate. Two days ago I was tempted to try I.E.9, D/L it but decided it wasn't for me.Did the uninstall in "Add/Remove".Later I realised that my yellow folders, from "My Docs" etc down to folders I'd gathered work in would not now open with left clicks, only with R click and "Open". The message I get is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing these actions. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel".how do I define my "yellow" folders in order to assign 'em to something that will open them with? If I drag "My documents down to the taskbar and pin it to Windows Explorer then it will open from there with no problem.I gather that Windows Explorer is the programme to link 'em to but how?

windows 7 36 posts Gaithersburg,MD.I have a devil of a time quite often finding documents I just created and saved. But I did not look which folder it saved it in, since from years of working with computers it would always save it to Documents, where a normalperson would want it.BUT I noticed (after hours of searching,) that it saved the document (a .pdf file) in a Folder called XKVBTW02, but NOT also in Documents. This drives me crazy. It's idiotic!!! Why does it do that and why could I
not find it when I searched for .pdf? How do I fix this so every document is saved in the Documents folder?TW It also did not show up under Recent documents, that why it took me hours to find it again. In above crazy folder.I have worked with some documents today and saved them "save as" and gave it a name. But I did not look what folder it went into since I was used from years of computing that it would go to my documents.

I have windows seven home premium on a lenevo 3000 N100.I was running Super Anti spyware free edition and it said that a folder in my documents which contained 2 MP3 files and 2 image files was corrupt. I know it was not like that to begin with as I downloaded it on Jan 7 and have listened to the songs a few times since then. I can't delete it because it is corrupt. It recommends I run chkdsk. I go to it by going to my computer, drive c, properties, tools, check disk. Then it says it can't run it when windows is in use and asks if I'd like to schedule a scan the next time I turn on my computer. I have restarted and shut down my computer atleast 5 times now and it will not start that scan, it'll just boot up like it normally would.
