Laptop Crashes With External Display - No BSoD

Jan 22, 2013

My work laptop, an HP 8560p, crashes after a period of time with an external monitor connected to it. Crashing can occur anywhere from a few minutes after rebooting to a couple hours after rebooting. There is no BSoD when the laptop crashes; the laptop just shuts off and automatically restarts. I have not been able to replicate this issue without an external monitor plugged in. The issue happens with the external monitor plugged in via direct to the laptop or through the dock; VGA or DVI.

So far I've tried:

A clean sweep of the video drivers and testing both the windows display drivers and the ATI drivers.Sending the laptop to HP, where they completely replaced the motherboard.Currently running memtest86+ (currently 2 passes through without any issues).

BSOD When Connected To External Monitor Using Display-Port?

Jul 6, 2011

I am getting a lot of BSOD when my laptop is connected to an external monitor using a display-port cable. The system is fine when I don't use a external monitor and use just laptop screen. External monitor is a Dell 30inch. I have tried different display-port cables, different monitors, tried connecting via vga...still get BSOD, so I am thinking the problem is more on the windows 7/software side rather than hardware.

1. Uninstall AVG free edition 2011

2. Upgraded network-gigabit driver directly from intel instead of Lenovo

3a. Upgraded Nvidia drivers directly from nvidia for Quadro 1000m (ver 8.17.12.7533 - 5/20/2011) - got BSOD within 30min

3b. Downgraded Nvidia drivers to version from Lenovo (ver 8.17.12.6696 - 2/2/2011) - still get BSOD but there is more time between BSODs.

I am using a lenovo w520 laptop, win 7 SP1, x64. 8gb memory, intel 510 solid-state drive, Nvidia Quadro 1000 and Intel HD Graphics 3000, No-Anti-Virus and running zone-alarm firewall.

Windows Does Not Recognize External Display Connected To A Laptop

Jun 30, 2012

I have a HP Pavilion dm1z laptop. The laptop has a HDMI port. I am trying to connect it to my Samsung BX2335 display. The display has the DVI dual link port only. So I bought a HDMI - DVI adapter.I have Win7 x64 on my laptop. When I start the laptop with the external display connected, the picture is duplicated on both the laptop and the external display. But as soon as Windows starts, the picture will only be displayed on the laptop, 'Starting Windows' being the last picture shown on both displays. After some investigation it seems that windows could not detect the external display successfully. In the 'Screen Resolution' window the external display is shown as 'Display the device on: VGA'. It is impossible to view the properties of the external display, as the option is disabled, and the display is called 'Default Monitor'.I tried updating the AMD Radeon Catalyst drivers, but this did not help. Tried to install the external display drivers, but these installed as the mobile device display drivers.

Windows 7 Display / Screen Crashes?

Jun 29, 2011

Recently I got rid of my Windows XP and installed Windows 7. In the beginning I didn't notice any discrepancies and I started filling my computer with useful programs. I was interrupted by a crash that basically makes the screen become dark blue with lines going diagonal. Also what was strange was that when I used button combos such as alt+F4 and ctrl+alt+del it changed color and I could hear background noise the same as when it is running normally. Therefore, to sum it up, my monitor display crashes randomly even upon startup or when I use some programs. As a result I tried the Windows 7 compatibility checker and everything seemed alright.

Display Driver Crashes And BSODs With New GPU

Dec 6, 2012

I recently built a new computer using the following parts:

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W
Storage: 2 x OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD in RAID 0 Configuration and is also the boot drive
320GB Western Digital 7200RPM HDD as a data drive
CPU: Intel i5 3570k
CPU Cooler: Corsair H70 Core w/ 2 Corsair SP120 static pressure fans
lastly,
GPU: MSI R7870 Hawk

I have the CPU overclocked to about ~4.4Ghz using the ASUS motherboard's TPU switch and the AI Suite II's automatic overclocking utility. My main issue has been more of an annoyance than something that keeps the computer from functioning. I have been attempting to overclock the GPU which is pretty much made for overclocking considering it has the TwinFrozer IV cooler along with other OC features. My problem though is that even with minor overclocks like 1140 Mhz core clock and 1250 Mhz memory clock while playing pretty much any game I'm having issues with the display driver crashing (I'm assuming that's what is happening as the game freezes, goes black and then flashes back.)

This is as compared to the default speeds of 1100 core clock and 1200 memory clock. Not only does the display driver crash I also get BSODs every so often, eight in total now. The BSODs I'm getting mostly have the error code 0xA0000001 which seems to be cause by atikmdag.sys usually. I also recently tried using 3DMark 11 to benchmark the system and it would actually perform worse when I overclocked the card. The CPU score was always good but the GPU score was rather low. For overclocking I am using MSI Afterburner and watching the GPU temps they have never gone over 53C which I know is a safe temp. I have BlueScreenView and Windows Debugging Tools installed if you would like more information on the BSODs or any other information.

Display Freezes / BSODs And Random System Crashes

Oct 27, 2011

My computer has been crashing a lot lately. Usually, the computer freezes and weird lines appear on the display when it happens. Other times it just shows a BSOD and restarts. It started happening around 2-3 weeks after my motherboard, processor and RAM were changed because a part of the previous motherboard had burnt. The previous motherboard was ASUS M3A78-EM, the onboard graphics was ATI Radeon HD 3200 and RAM was 2 GB DDR2.I took the PC to a my computer vendor after everything I tried had failed. Firstly, he diagnosed it as an issue because of improper earthing/grounding in the switchboard where I plugged the computer and the UPS. I got the earthing issue sorted but to no avail, it still hanged/freezed. The second time I took it to him he said that he might have to update the BIOS and when I brought it back the problem had apparently been fixed but that was only for a few days. After like 4-5 days it started happening again. Same weird lines - green, magenta, purple and all the rest of it - started appearing. The HDD LED stops when this happens. I only observed the LED today, though. Today the computer freezed without those weird lines on two out of the 5 or 6 times it happenrd, it looked like it had just hanged but the HDD LED had gone off.Sometimes the PC doesn't start up at all immediately after it has crashed. That's what led me to guess it's a hardware issue. Also, it happens in safe mode and Windows XP too (I dual boot Windows XP and Windows 7) and I remember it once happening even before the computer had completely booted.Computer details:Windows 7 32-bitASUS M4A78LT-M-LEAMD Athlon II X2 250ATI Radeon 3000 onboard graphics1 x 2 GB DDR3 RAM250 GB SATAMinidumps and NirSoft BlueScreenView HTML report: url..

Game Crashes And Display Driver Has Stopped Working

Jul 5, 2012

I've tried everything (including Tom's Hardware) Google has churned up but to no avail. This includes clean installs of my drivers, registry edits and even a reformat and fresh installation of Windows 7.I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, with the following (relevant) hardware:

ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
Geforce GTX 580
8Gb RAM
750 Watt PSU

I've played well over 350 hours of Battlefield 3 without a problem until I reformatted my computer for other, since resolved, issues. After the reformat It just wouldn't work. As previously mentioned I've tried all the common solutions for my issues, starting out assuming it was Battlefield that was causing them.I'm hoping it's not a hardware related issue, but I have a feeling that it might be. I've had this computer (custom built) for just over a year and a half.

External Display During Install

Feb 25, 2011

The users on this site have been amongst the most knowledgeable I've seen on the net. So anyhow, I have this laptop with a broken screen running Windows Vista and I plan on wiping it clean and installing Windows Server 2008 to use as a media center PC in the bedroom. When logged on to Vista, I can use the function keys to pull up the external, however, I am unable to do the same during Server install. How can I remedy this issue? I put this in the Windows 7 forum due to the similarities between 7 and Server 2008, the fact that it is not really a "server issue".

Windows 7 Detects VGA Driver As An External Display?

Apr 8, 2012

I am constantly using my netbook for school work and other things. I often have to plug it into external monitors by HDMI output, and all worked fine until yesterday. Now, when I go to Desktop-> Screen resolution (to choose my display), I always have an extra option even if I'm not connected to anything. It's called "VGA Display Device". If I'm right, it seems that my GPU detects my VGA driver as an external display, like a bug/glitch or something.

External Monitor Display Issues When Not Connected

Nov 2, 2009

Well, running Windows 7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.

Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them.

I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.

External Display NOT WORKING - Need To Reset Flicker Rate?

Jun 20, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 1012 running Windows 7 Starter SP1 and I've got it hooked up to my Protron 42" LCD screen with HDMI cable. I changed the flicker rate to 70 Hertz without checking the Proton's maximum flicker rate - yeah, that's really SMART - so now I've got an issue with my external display. It worked okay for second but then my laptop screen turned black and the external display reads "Signal Out of Range" (duh, the Protron works only up to a 69.8 Hertz flicker rate, which I SHOULD have checked BEFORE changing it, but what's done is done -_-).Now, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my laptop screen goes to black and the external display still reads that same message. I can't change the flicker rate without seeing the menu on my laptop screen.

[BSOD] Random Crashes With New SSD

Dec 22, 2011

I recently got a Kensington HyperX SH100S3B/120G SSD. I've been getting these stange BSODs. It doesn't happen during any particular kind of activity, usually it's just browsing the web or writing documents or something.

Every time the BSODs happen, for some reason the boot order switches from the SSD to my backup drive, and I have to go into the bios and change it. But other than that, my hard drive seems to be perfectly fine functioning afterwards...what's causing this??

All my components are pretty new, so I don't think hardware failure is very likely here. I've thought maybe I should update my bios? But I'm not sure honestly. My mobo is H67MA-E35-B3 LGA 1155 H67 mATX Intel Motherboard.

BSOD Mainly 1e Crashes In Windows 7?

Jan 21, 2012

I have been experiencing BSOD nastiness for the past two weeks. It seems to have started by one of two things. I tried to download a trial version of Corel PSP 4x. This file was downloaded at 7:30 PM on 1-10-12. I opened the file, used it a little, and went to bed. No problems!. That night, Windows downloaded a bunch of updates at about 3am. My wife used the computer that day with no problems. Later that day, another batch of windows updates was installed. That is when trouble started. The updates were:

KB2584146, 2644615, 2631813, 890830, 2538242.

What I have tried (may not be in precise chronological order): I tried to uninstall PSP x4. The uninstall crashed, leaving a partial install. I did a memory test. No problems found.I did a system restore to a restore point before the PSP install, but I did not immediately update the windows updates.Based on the reliability monitor, it looks like this worked until the updates were reinstalled automatically on 1/14. (Maybe, it is a little hard to tell.)Since then I have updated the BOIS (megatrends m4a89TD pro usb3 from version 1101 to version 1901.)Still having problems today. DMP files attached, PerfMon files attached. Misc Info per "BSOD Posting Page"Windows 7 64 bit retail version installed on new build in Feb. 2011.Other system specs included in profile.

BSOD BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER Crashes

Mar 11, 2012

The new driver version for the culprit driver (USBHUB.SYS) was installed (it was a 2009 version before the uninstall and a 2011 version afterwards). The blue screen problem happens any time (meaning I have not seen it crashing on using a specific application). Also it is not immediately after the laptop comes up from hibernation or sleep mode.Lately, once I reboot the system after this BSOD I also face a fltmgr.sys bsod error as well.

My laptop details:

Acer Aspire 5820T

Random Crashes With No BSOD?

My brother has been complaining that his PC shuts down randomly. I check the events log and find a very large list of critical Kernel power 41 errors, with no other error before them most of the times. I can't seem to find any pattern to them, so I asume it's hardware related. There's also nothing in particular he does that triggers it. I've runed memtest86 and AIDA64 stress test while checking temperatures with nothing strange, changed the PSU, formatted and clean installed Windows again, still the same. I'm about to surrender with this...

BSOD - I Had Been Having Regular Crashes

Feb 9, 2010

Hey Tom's! I hope everyone is well. I'm returning to the community with a problem I was having before. I have just upgraded from Windows 7 RC to Win 7 32 bit Enterprise Edition with no problems. Did a fresh install and had it formatted.

Just got my first BSOD/crash, and I had been having regular crashes (about once every 4-5 days) I don't think it's hardware related, probably driver, so I was hoping people could help narrow it down and kill this problem for good.

Random System Crashes (no Bsod)

Sep 19, 2011

Just to be clear, these crashes do not provide a BSOD and therefore no error code for me to research and correct on my own. In the last two days, this has happened 4-5 times, and most often while watching streaming video online (but not always). Without warning, everything will lock up (sometimes this is accompanied by a terrible sound emitted from the speakers - presumably looping audio from the video i was watching). The computer then reboots itself without my involvement. Before anyone asks, my drivers are UP TO DATE, and my BIOS is up to date as well. So far, I have asked around and most people point to my graphics card overheating, or a very dirty (dusty) pc as a likely cause. Firstly, my computer is generally kept very clean, and I am monitoring my GPU temps and they are usually WELL within normal ranges (frankly it runs very cool). I have called EVGA for support, and they told me they had not heard of this problem before. They had me run a bunch of gpu stress tests, all of which provided no clue (they were clean) as to what could be wrong. Someone else told me to make sure my RAM was properly seated. I did check that and I can't see any seating issues.

[BSOD] Computer Crashes When Gaming?

A couple of days ago I did something really stupid: I tried to download a game for free by following a tutorial which required me to install a Babylon toolbar from an ad. It didn't work, so I uninstalled all the babylon stuff and scanned my computer with Avira and Ad-aware, they came up with some detections and a hidden object and removed them. After that, I bought the game instead of downloading. However, my computer now randomly freezes when playing and seems slightly slower than before. As long as I'm not gaming, my computer functions normally, but starting the game makes my computer freeze and BSOD every 2 out of 3 times. Also my computer doesn't seem to make any minidumps, even after enabling it via those settings and trying tons of other ways.
