Windows 7 Detects VGA Driver As An External Display?

Apr 8, 2012

I am constantly using my netbook for school work and other things. I often have to plug it into external monitors by HDMI output, and all worked fine until yesterday. Now, when I go to Desktop-> Screen resolution (to choose my display), I always have an extra option even if I'm not connected to anything. It's called "VGA Display Device". If I'm right, it seems that my GPU detects my VGA driver as an external display, like a bug/glitch or something.

Windows Does Not Recognize External Display Connected To A Laptop

Jun 30, 2012

I have a HP Pavilion dm1z laptop. The laptop has a HDMI port. I am trying to connect it to my Samsung BX2335 display. The display has the DVI dual link port only. So I bought a HDMI - DVI adapter.I have Win7 x64 on my laptop. When I start the laptop with the external display connected, the picture is duplicated on both the laptop and the external display. But as soon as Windows starts, the picture will only be displayed on the laptop, 'Starting Windows' being the last picture shown on both displays. After some investigation it seems that windows could not detect the external display successfully. In the 'Screen Resolution' window the external display is shown as 'Display the device on: VGA'. It is impossible to view the properties of the external display, as the option is disabled, and the display is called 'Default Monitor'.I tried updating the AMD Radeon Catalyst drivers, but this did not help. Tried to install the external display drivers, but these installed as the mobile device display drivers.

Windows 7 Detects 4GB RAM But Using Only 3GB

Mar 11, 2011

My computer is a machine that has 3gb DDR3 ram and a 1gb graphics card. I've recently installed windows 7 (32 bit) and upon looking at the system through control panel, i found that windows detects 4.00gb ram but is only using 3.00gb. Does the '4gb' detected by windows include the graphics card memory? Am I able to ignore this and be able to fully use both my 3gb DDR3 and 1gb graphics card?

External Display During Install

Feb 25, 2011

The users on this site have been amongst the most knowledgeable I've seen on the net. So anyhow, I have this laptop with a broken screen running Windows Vista and I plan on wiping it clean and installing Windows Server 2008 to use as a media center PC in the bedroom. When logged on to Vista, I can use the function keys to pull up the external, however, I am unable to do the same during Server install. How can I remedy this issue? I put this in the Windows 7 forum due to the similarities between 7 and Server 2008, the fact that it is not really a "server issue".

Windows 7 Detects HDD, Won't Format Or Install?

Jun 3, 2010

I recently received a new XFX 780i in the mail via their RMA service. I expected when I hooked it up to have to do a System Repair. After the repair, something went wrong and the boot manager was not detected. Went to repair again and Windows 7 was missing from the list of OS's. Decided to try to salvage what was left on the remaining partitions and do a fresh install on the main one.I go to format the drive and I received an error saying that it could not format the partition, error code 0x80070057. I received this same message when I try to install the OS.I tried a brand new Seagate 1TB and received the same error.I tried a IDE WD 120GB HDD thinking there may be something wrong with the SATA controllers drivers with the same result.Do I need to use the load drivers option when I am at the partition screen of installation? I have visited the Seagate website and they say they don't have drivers because the OS and motherboard contains the necessary information. So which drivers should I load? I tried to load the nForce drivers (I have a nvidia northbridge) and I can find the SATA controller drivers but the result is the same. Can someone maybe shed some light on what this error is about. I have read elsewhere people have issues with this error when dealing with Windows Update, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Windows 7 Detects Wireless Card But Won't Use It

Feb 20, 2011

I'm having this odd problem where Windows 7 autodetects my wireless network card just fine (Asus WL-160N). There are no proper Windows 7 drivers as its an old card, it seems to use the same one as I got from the asus website.

However, when I try to run ANYTHING that needs a net connection, like my antivirus install program, it tells me that it cannot detect a network card. As a matter of fact, there is no wireless networking tab under networking, and there is not even wireless zero service running. On top of that, it does not even try to detect my router (Asus RT-NI6), again, because it thinks there is no card.

I don't know much about Windows 7, having only had it a couple weeks. With no wireless its worse than useless to me.

I have installed the software that came with the card, and it does nothing. Even tried running it in XP and Vista mode (as admin user). I have only the basic install from the dvd, with no wired connection currently available. The only internet i have is on my XP system, that is too unstable (thats why I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7). Obviously I'm missing something, but no clue.

Edit: the card and the router work fine in XP, no problems. Wireless zero in XP is an issue, so I have to use the control center program from asus.

Windows 7 Wireless Detects Network As Unknown?

Aug 31, 2011

I have a new Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7 Business and went to connect to my wireless home network on a Linksys router and Win 7 detects other networks in the area, but my network SSID is not listed. I reset the router thinking that maybe the issue, but I havd another laptop and desktop and both are working fine with the network and router on the web.I then realized that Win 7 had in the available wireless listings a "unknown" network, when I select that network to connnect it ask for an SSID, It type in my SSID and it then connects to the internet.

BUt when I turnoff or reboot the laptop it will not automatically reconnect at start up. I have selected in the preferred wireless networks to connect automatically, but because it keeps seeing an unknown wireless network, I have to manually reconnect and re-type in my SSID.Does anyone know why Win7 keeps seeing my Linksys as an unknown network and how to make it reconnect automatically at startup.

Windows No Longer Detects USB Game Pads

Dec 15, 2011

All of a freakin' sudden Windows 7 doesn't detect my gamepads.

It was working JUST FINE until my previous problem occured (see previous problem here: My Hard Drive no longer shows up in My Computer)

Yes, I've done windows updates. Yes, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers. Yes, my power option is on High Performance. Yes, I changed the power plan settings to Disable Selective Suspend. Yes, I've checked device manager and there are no problems detected.

If I were to reboot my computer and plug in my controller the gamepad usually works. Windows 7 detects it, makes that stupid USB sound, and all is dandy. But the minute I launch a game and start trying to map my controls windows does that gay noise where it says the USB is disconnected. Then it goes back and forth with the connect/disconnect noises. I can still see the power light on my game pad at this point. So I quit my game and look in Devices and Printers and it no longer displays my game pad. Then the power light on my game pad dissapears.

Laptop Crashes With External Display - No BSoD

Jan 22, 2013

My work laptop, an HP 8560p, crashes after a period of time with an external monitor connected to it. Crashing can occur anywhere from a few minutes after rebooting to a couple hours after rebooting. There is no BSoD when the laptop crashes; the laptop just shuts off and automatically restarts. I have not been able to replicate this issue without an external monitor plugged in. The issue happens with the external monitor plugged in via direct to the laptop or through the dock; VGA or DVI.

So far I've tried:

A clean sweep of the video drivers and testing both the windows display drivers and the ATI drivers.Sending the laptop to HP, where they completely replaced the motherboard.Currently running memtest86+ (currently 2 passes through without any issues).

External Monitor Display Issues When Not Connected

Nov 2, 2009

Well, running Windows 7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.

Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them.

I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.

BSOD When Connected To External Monitor Using Display-Port?

Jul 6, 2011

I am getting a lot of BSOD when my laptop is connected to an external monitor using a display-port cable. The system is fine when I don't use a external monitor and use just laptop screen. External monitor is a Dell 30inch. I have tried different display-port cables, different monitors, tried connecting via vga...still get BSOD, so I am thinking the problem is more on the windows 7/software side rather than hardware.

1. Uninstall AVG free edition 2011

2. Upgraded network-gigabit driver directly from intel instead of Lenovo

3a. Upgraded Nvidia drivers directly from nvidia for Quadro 1000m (ver 8.17.12.7533 - 5/20/2011) - got BSOD within 30min

3b. Downgraded Nvidia drivers to version from Lenovo (ver 8.17.12.6696 - 2/2/2011) - still get BSOD but there is more time between BSODs.

I am using a lenovo w520 laptop, win 7 SP1, x64. 8gb memory, intel 510 solid-state drive, Nvidia Quadro 1000 and Intel HD Graphics 3000, No-Anti-Virus and running zone-alarm firewall.

External Display NOT WORKING - Need To Reset Flicker Rate?

Jun 20, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 1012 running Windows 7 Starter SP1 and I've got it hooked up to my Protron 42" LCD screen with HDMI cable. I changed the flicker rate to 70 Hertz without checking the Proton's maximum flicker rate - yeah, that's really SMART - so now I've got an issue with my external display. It worked okay for second but then my laptop screen turned black and the external display reads "Signal Out of Range" (duh, the Protron works only up to a 69.8 Hertz flicker rate, which I SHOULD have checked BEFORE changing it, but what's done is done -_-).Now, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my laptop screen goes to black and the external display still reads that same message. I can't change the flicker rate without seeing the menu on my laptop screen.

Display Driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver For Windows XP Stop?

Sep 22, 2012

I have an Acer Aspire 7741z-4433 with an Intel(R) Pentium(R) p6200 (2.13 GHz, 3MB 1.3 cache). This only happens to me while I am playing The Sims 3. I have the game set on the lowest quality settings, even though my laptop "claims" to be HD LED, etc. This issue still happens. As you may know I cannot replace the graphics card as it is apart of the motherboard, and to buy a new motherboard with a better graphics card would cost more than a new computer. I have been the my manufacture's website and tried installing an update of the graphics card, and that didn't do the trick either. I am at my wits end, and I just want to play the game without it shutting down and freezing my computer. The reason I know the error is because I do Alt + Tab to get back to the desktop. The way it acts up while I am in game is the screen blacks out but I can still see the software's mouse, and then it blinks a couple times and then freezes completely?

Detects ATI Instead Of Nvidia Graphic Card

Nov 9, 2009

So I installed Windows 7 32bit a couple of days ago and I have tried to install the drivers for my NVIDIA 8600 GTS ever since without success. I downloaded several versions from nvidia and none of them work.

The weird thing is is that according to device manager I've an ATI X1200 installed. I tried uninstalling it and installing nvidia drivers but it still doesn't work.

Im clueless, since I have no experience in solving problems with my graphic card. So, if anybody got some tips and things for me to try, I'd be grateful.

Dell Inspiron 14r Wifi Detects Networks But Won't Connect

Jul 21, 2011

I'm visiting my parents for the summer and I brought my laptop with me and the wireless was working fine for the first month or so. One random day it stopped working and will not connect. I called dell support and for some reason it just started working when I was on the phone with him, but for the next couple of days it would connect for awhile then not connect 15 minutes later. It's not the router because it won't connect to other networks, the dell support guy says its not the hardware (everything in the device manager says its fine also), It works when the ethernet cable is plugged in, I installed all the latest drivers for the network adapter (Intel Wifi link 1000 BGN), I installed a registry fix program and for a little bit it was working with some networks, but only limited access.

Windows 7 64 Bit GTX 560 Display Driver?

Sep 19, 2011

When I attempt to install my graphics driver (Nvidia Geforce GTX 560) and attempt to reboot my PC it proceeds past the POST screen and onto the "Loading Windows" screen, after the logo appears and finishes loading, instead of it moving on to my login screen it hangs on a blank BLACK screen with just my mouse pointer visible.Regardless of how many times I reboot my PC it always hangs right after the windows logo screen, I have attempted to do restores about 10 times and each time I restore I boots up fine, until I install the display drivers and attempt to restart. It does boot up in safe mode, and works fine on fresh installs.I have tried running the repair tool on the windows 7 disc, and in safe mode with no avail it tells me nothing is wrong. I attempted to run the start up repair and that also says nothing is wrong.

When I go into Device Manager under Display Adapters after I complete a system restore it does say "Nvidia Geforce GTX 560" and that it is working properly. Although it says I need to reboot to complete the update, which must be because this particular working system restore point was created after I installed the driver but before I restarted my pc. The only issue is when I go to restart my pc it hangs on the black screen again. Specs:[CODE]

Ati Display Driver Not Responding Windows 7

I tried to install my original drivers several times with no solution and even tried downloading the latest drivers from amd.com but nothing was solved. It all started because of a minor taskbar bug (taskbar ignored mouse until ctrl+alt+del was pressed) and on most forums I found posts saying that its the display driwer fault. It isnt. I still have the bug even though I have the basic driver. Eventually I d get over the bug but without the correct driver my video card is practically useless. Display Adapter Driver Error With Windows 7?

Oct 30, 2011

System Specifications:

Acer Aspire 5551
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU - 2.1GHz Triple-core AMD Phenom II N830
Graphics - 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250
RAM - 4 GB DDR 3

Two days ago, my brother complained to me about his laptop, Windows seemed to have just froze, with screen tearing and weird lines all over the screen. I told him to restart his laptop. Upon restarting, the entire was black, with the windows logo stretched across the screen, all torn. But I could still hear the Windows noises it makes when it logs in, So this got me thinking, could it be an issue with his Display Driver?

I booted in Safe Mode to see if it would boot up, it works fine. No black screen, no tearing, nothing. Which makes me think that it must be a issue with his Driver. I asked him if he's made any changes recently to his drivers and he said no.

I next went into the Device Manager to find his Display Adapter, and I disabled it. I then restarted his laptop to see if it'll work, and it worked. No problem, no screen tearing, it logged him in fine. I next went about uninstalling and reinstalling his driver.

I rebooted it into Safe Mode and uninstalled his driver from the Device Manager. Then, I went about reinstalling it again, so I went to the ATI website, AMD or something I think it was called, and I had to download the AMD Vistion Engine Control Center. It found drivers for several things, including his Display Graphics. So I downloaded them, installed them. I restarted his laptop, but the same thing happened. Black Screen, screen tearing, Windows Logo stretched and torn.
