Install On Drive Maxed Out Capacity
I installed windows 7 on a laptop with Windows Vista 64-bit When installed, it installed on a D:drive with only 14.6 GB capacity. The C: drive was apparently allocated for the Vista OS. After reinstalling some of the applications, it has maxed out the D: drive capacity.
It looks as if it is loading the apps both on the C: and D: drives. How do I transition the default windows 7 OS to the C:drive which has 238 GB capacity? Will I need to reinstall Windows 7 to do this? Ultimately, I would like to eliminate Vista completely and only deal with Windows 7.

Using Low Capacity SSD For OS And Programs, And High Capacity SATA HDD For User Data
I am acquiring an 80GB SSD, on which I wish to install Windows 7 and various applications. I do have many gigabytes of media files which would far exceed (by an order of magnitude) the capacity of the entire SSD drive. I'm aware that I can relocate individual user folders to a different drive, but I would like to simply relocate the entire /Users folder to the high-capacity drive, such that if I were to create a new user, it would automatically be created on the big drive, without me having to manually set it up. Is there a way to move the entire /Users folder? I would be attempting to move it immediately after doing a fresh install of Windows 7 on the SSD drive.

Drive Capacity Meters
I am running Windows 7 RC1. My drive icons have changed and I can figure out what changed. The drives used to have the meters under the icon showing the amount of the drive full. I don't know what happened, but the meter no longer shows under the icon. I have switched the view to list and back to Extended Tiles and the meters still do not show up. I have tried switching to several different views and back to Extended Tiles and still don't get the meter back. Does anyone know what I did and how to get the meters back on the icons?

Win 7 Reports HDD Partition Less Than Drive Capacity
windows 7 only seems to be seeing 128GB of my 160 gb primary drive and only 10 gb of my 160 gb secondary drive, did I do something wrong or is this a bug that needs to be fixed? I know there was an issue like this with, i do belive win98. I think its a WIN 7 reporting issue but some others do not. opinions? solutions? these drives were fully partitioned to full capacity and 1 partition on each so now Im lost.

RAID 10 - BIOS Capacity Info Not Matching C Drive Properties
I built my own computer and first configured RAID 1 and installed Vista. A couple days later, I decided that I wanted RAID 10, so I brought 2 additional drives. When I went into BIOS to configure the RAID options, RAID 0, 5, and 10 volumes would be created, but would say "No" under the bootable column. My work around when Windows 7 was released was to delete the RAID volume and install the OS on 1 drive. Then, I used the Intel Storage Matrix Console to create the RAID 10 volume. One oddity (#1) here is that the Intel Storage Matrix Console said that the maximum size RAID 10 volume was 2TB. After the volume creation was complete, I rebooted. The second oddity here (#2) is that upon bootup the BIOS info screen says that a RAID 10 volume is present and its capacity is 2006 GB. When I checked the drive size using the "properties" option in Windows Explorer, it told me that the size is about 1.36TB. Other than these two capacity observations, Windows 7 is working beautifully. I'd really like to create a full RAID 10 volume (close to 3TB from the 4 1.5 TB drives), and I would like it to be reflected as such under "properties".

High Capacity SDHC Cards Not Supported
I'm running the 32bit Windows 7 beta version and everything installed fine on my Toshiba Sat Pro laptop (a200GE-26q model). The media card reader can read a 2 GB SD card but not a 4GB High capacity SD card. Any one else have the same problem? There are no obvious device errors in the device manager.

Not Recognizing SD Cards, And Reporting Incorrect Capacity On Format
When i plug an SD card into my USB card reader, Windows 7 says that it needs formatting, and refuses to read it. This has happened both with the SD card from a Nintendo DS (DSTT), as well as the one out of the Canon camera (both oldish 2gb, one micro SD, the other mini SD). If I start Virtual XP, and attach the USB card reader, XP can read the cards fine. I figured Win 7 must be using some new storage format, so i backed up both cards, and went to format them, but Win 7 is saying they only have a capacity of just under 1Gb each. Could it be my old multi-format USB card reader that's causing the problem? It's a cheapie generic thing, no idea where i'd find any drivers for it. When i plug my Blackberry in via USB, it reads the 4Gb micro SD card in that just fine (although it keeps telling me it needs to scan it for errors every time).

32 Bit OS And 64 Bit OS RAM Capacity
I currently have the 32 bit edition of Windows 7 Beta for both my laptop and my desktop. It works great! And, most importantly, it works well with all my programs that may not function properly on a 64 bit OS. However, I want to upgrade the RAM on my desktop to more than3.5 GB of RAM. On Windows XP 32 bit this wasn't possible because, to my understanding, of the way Windows XP was put together. Online I can't find any reason that Windows 7 shouldn't be able to handle more than 3.5 GB of RAM. So my question is why is there a restriction placed to inconvience those who want to continue using the 32 bit OS?

New W7 Install With New WD Drive
After 3+ years of file accumulation & XP on my C drive - its time obviously to upgrade BOTH. I have not read anywhere what appears to me to be a very simple approach -> installing W7 onto a new hard drive. My plan is to remove my existing C drive; install a new OEM WD640 HD; boot from W7 disk; format; partition; and then proceed with W7 installation steps. After completion and verifying all is working property, shut down the system; reinstall old C drive back into my system and treat it as a "data" drive. Will W7 have any problems accessing these older files from my old C drive - other than permission issues" ?

Clean Install Onto New Drive
I have Windows 7 rc running on one of my 2 ide drives, with XP on an SATA drive - dual booting. I purchased a 500gb SATA drive to replace the the 2 ide drives The plan is to: - connect the new drive while shutdown - boot into XP - Partition new drive, with the first partition active(with partition Magic). - Transfer non-OS partition data to the new ones - shut down and disconnect the ide drives - insert Windows 7 disc and perform install on first partion of new drive. I understand that the MBR is on the Windows 7 partition. Will I have any problems with the XP install, or will the new Windows 7 install create a new MBR to allow dual boot? I know I'll have issues with drive letters. But other than the XP, and Windows 7 partitions it's just data - no programs. Or, are there any other problems you see with my procedure?

D Drive After Custom Install
I did a custom install from vista to 7(32 bit) today. I deleted all old restore points through the space management, however, the partition reads a still mostly full. There is only 1.8gb out of 8.3 available. When I access the folder, there is nothing in there, even if I show hidden files. I believe it is remnants of my old vista recovery drive, which I did not erase prior to my upgrade and was always equally full to what it is now. How would I go about eliminating these files now so I can backup my new OS installation?

Install To Removeable Drive
Currently I have Vista Ultimate (32-bit) and I want to keep that in place for a while. I have a limited amount of space in my machine so I have bought a HD caddy bay so that I can swap in a new hard disk from the front of the machine. I have bought two new drives and I have two caddies, so either one of those drives can be inserted. I don't want to hotswap, I am happy to power down to swap the caddy. Once the caddy is inserted it behaves as if it is plugged into sata05, (DVD is sata04) in other words, it is just another hard disk. (sata00 is the system drive with Vista, sata01 is a hard disk used to store data. 02 and 03 are not available.) This is what I want to do. I want to clean install Windows 7 onto one of the removeable drives. I expect the install process to see that Vista is on the system drive and then set BCD to dual boot. If this happens, of course, it means that sometimes the Windows 7 caddy won't be inserted (the other caddy might have a ::cough:: linux distro), so I really just want the machine to default to Vista boot. I guess I can use bootrec to restore the dual boot options so that it just has Vista (and wipe any reference to Windows 7). If I do this, how do I boot to Windows 7? When I start my Dell I can press F12 to get a menu of the devices to boot from, if I have the Windows 7 (or ::cough:: linux) caddy inserted, will I be able to use this menu to boot from that drive? If so, then I'll be happy.

Install TO External Drive
I have a 20GB laptop HDD in an enclosure at the moment. I want to copy the Windows 7 setup files from the extracted ISO to that drive for installation. I did this with XP by using the following: Code: C:xp3I386winnt32.exe /syspart:E: /tempdrive:E: /makelocalsource /noreboot For the XP install I hooked up the drive via a usb-to-ide interface to another laptop and then ran that line from a command prompt and stepped through copying the needed setup files to the drive. From there I placed the HDD into the desired laptop (no working cd/dvd rom) and booted up into Windows setup. I do not believe this will work for 7 as there seems to be a directory structure difference to say the least. I wonder if that would still work had I the correct syntax though... Is it possible to do this with Windows 7? *The laptop is a DELL Inspiron 1100. The BIOS does not support booting from a USB device.

Win 7 Install On New Drive

I want to purchase a second hard drive to install the new operating system for a "clean install" and use my old drive as as secondary drive. I am not interested in running Vista from it, only the software installed on the old drive. Can this be done? If so, how? I really would appreciate your help. Both are serial drives.

Boot Only With Install CD In Drive
I just installed Windows 7 RC on a Acer Aspire One netbook from a USB DVD-ROM. The installation completes and everything works fine. When I remove the UDB DVD drive Windows 7 does not boot. All that appears is a message "Operating System not found" before any windows messages appear. So I tried to change the boot order in the BIOS, eventually only leaving the HDD, but still the same. If I plug the UDB DVD drive back in, I get a message if I want to boot from DVD (press a key...) and when I let that continue without pressing a key Windows 7 boots up fine. I unplugged all other USB devices (I had a Razer mouse and a keyboard plugged in via a USB hub), problems persist.I reinstalled after deleting all partitions and reformatting. Still the same problem. So I looked into the disk manager and I have one 10MB partition created by windows installer and a ~140GB windows partition. I booted into the recovery mode and ran the startup recovery. "windows could not find any problems". But still no boot.So I did the steps described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392/ /fixmbr, fixboot, including the bcdedit /rebuild, and still the same error.I think that when the BIOS boots it may have a problem with finding the OS - that's what the error message seems to indicate. How do you find out what the BIOS or the boot manager sees, so I can fix?

Samsung F1 Drive Install Issue
Existing Setup Abit IN9 32-Max, 2gig OCZ, E6300, WD 250g, Windows 7 v7264 x32 NO issues, everything runs fine. Removed WD 250g and switched to Samsung F1 Spinpoint 750g drive (which is essentially my old gamming system running on xp). Cannot install Windows 7, regardless of version, locks halfway through install. Hard reset and Drive is no longer detected. I experienced this same issue back when I had the gaming system and the only way to fix it was to disable Command Qeueing ( which was recommended by users with same issue ). The problem seems to be with the nvidia chipset ( in this case 6) not playing nice with some Samsung drives. However, I was able to install XP and of course disable this option. PC then ran fine for a year, no lockups. Basically same system, but will not allow Windows 7 to install. Ive tried different sata ports, different partitions, different Windows 7 versions, different bios settings... Always locks halfway through.

Install Win7 On SATA Drive
I have a HP m7667c, which has two SATA drives. The motherboard is ASUS P5BW-LA (or Basswood-UL8E). I've never successfully installed vista before because of it kept asking for SATA drive. I wonder if there is a solution for this problem with Window 7? I think I have RAID on in the BIOS configuration but I don't really want to turn it off because in that way my old WinXP would die. I just wanted to give Windows 7 a try before I completely change to it. Could anyone help me? I could provide more information about the desktop if necessary.

Install From XP - Hard Drive Still Full
Completed an install from XP to 7 by copying the install disk to my lap top hard drive, then running "setup". Thought that this would delete the all of the old files. And, indeed, when I search for known file names, the search comes up empty. However, the properties of the disk show the same amount of disk space used as before the install. How can I remove these "ghost" files?

Backing Up For Clean Install On The Same Drive
I want to do a clean install of my purchased Windows 7 from Windows 7 RC. The problem is I have a lot of data that I want to keep and since it is about 500GB in size, i have no cheap way of backing it up (obviously considering buying another HDD, but i'd rather not for now). I was thinking that maybe I should partition my 1TB main HDD into 2, and transfer all my data over to new partition, format/clean install the old one and lastly merge the partitions. Is this possible?

Drive Letters Changed After Install
Decided to install Windows 7 Pro today but when the install completed, I noticed my drive letters were out of order. Previously, my partition drives when running Vista Home Premium were C: System D: Recovery E: Apps F: Data Now its automatically changed to C: System D: Apps E: Data F: Recovery My HP Recovery partition jumped down the list and changed from D to F and shifted the letters of the other drives as well. I have no idea why it changed on its own as I only installed Windows 7 in drive C. The Recovery drive is the 2nd fullest driver on my HD behind C Drive. Is this normal? Is there a fix for such a thing?
