Oct 5, 2011I have only had my Asus CM 1730-03 desktop for 4 days and it works fine except one very important thing. Four out of 5 times when I turn it on, it shows the Asus logo and the Windows 7 logo and plays the Windows 7 music, then I see a black screen with an active cursor that I can move with the mouse. No key commands work, like CTRL-ALT-DELETE. All I can do is hold the power button in until it turns off, then turn it on again. Even when it does boot successfully and I use it for a while, when it goes into rest mode, I get the same black screen and active cursor and have to power down again.
The only installations I have done are Kapersky anti-virus and an internal Linksys Wireless-G adapter from my old computer. At first I did not install the software for the wireless adapter, but I took it out of the PC today, installed the software successfully, and re-installed the adapter (per the instructions) and the computer is still behaving the exact same way.

Nov 16, 2011My computer locks up randomly and the screen turns black and unresponsive, at least once per day, forcing me to do a hard reset.There is no BSOD or Minidump created, although sometimes (maybe 75% of the time) there is a dump file created in the LiveKernelReports folder. The dump files in LiveKernelReports always point to atikmpag.sys. I tried uninstalling all video card drivers and using driver sweeper, and letting Windows use default graphics. I continued to get the same freezes, except no dump files were created at all in LiveKernelReports. I then reinstalled the ATI drivers, and the symptoms persist, now with dump files again pointing to the same atikmpag.sys.this only happens when the system is idle for a while. I never get freezes when actively using the system, but if I return to it after an hour or more, it's just a black screen and I must do a hard reset.I am running Win 7 professional 64-bit full version, 8 gb ram, 1gb ddr5 msi video card.Another strange symptom: After the hard reset, the computer has deleted all of my IE cookies. It also has forgotten the IE window size after these hard resets... very bizarre. In fact, if I make any changes to the desktop -- for example, by moving the icons or re-sorting them by name -- Windows doesn't remember this either. On reboot, it reverts to whatever I had on the desktop before making the changes. This does not happen on a normal restart/reboot. If I do not wait for it to crash, and instead I reboot normally, all of my settings/cookies/window sizes are preserved like you'd expect.
I've tried the following:
- ran memtest86, no errors after 9 passes
- ran seatools hard drive diagnostics, no errors found
- ran Hot CPU Tester 4, no errors found
- reinstalled/reseated graphics gard and memory sticks
- running with a single memory stick (same crashes occur with either memory stick)
- the windows memory and hard drive diagnostic tools, no errors found
- When running Driver Verifier, I get the same freezes, and still no minidump or bsod.
- Disabling all power saving options both in Windows and in the BIOS, like sleep mode, hibernate, etc.
- Updating all drivers that seemed out of date and upgrading bios to latest firmware.
Prime95 and furmark run without issue, and do not crash the system (presumably, because the system isn't idle when they are running). Idle temps (~30 degrees C) and temps under heavy load (about 60 degrees C) are well within the normal range.If I run in safe mode, it does not seem to occur, but I'm not positive because I've never stayed in safe mode for more than a day.

When Reboot, The Screen Eventually Goes To A Black Screen Saying "Windows 7 Failed To Start?
May 12, 2012My wife did something on her PC (she doesn't know exactly for sure what & can't explain it completely me), and now she can't boot up her PC. She says it had something to do with changing the security settings for a program she uses a lot so it wouldn't keep asking her if she wanted to launch it, and that's when it told her to restart the PC, then it wouldn't boot up anymore.When you reboot, the screen eventually goes to a black screen saying "Windows failed to start. A software or hardware error may be the cause" or something to that effect. It offers me the option to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally".If I Launch Startup Repair, nothing much happens --- it says it's adding files, then it looks like Windows is about to boot up, then it goes to a black screen for a long time & nothing happens.
If I choose Start Windows Normally, it simply reboots & eventually brings me back to the same screen again.I've tried using rebooting and selecting ESC to get to the boot menu, then installing the Win 7 installation disc & selecting the DVD drive, then I select thelanguage, then I click Repair, but it sits there forever with nothing happening.I also tried an outside boot disc I found on the web & it doesn't launch.
Dell Vostro 1520 Black Screen Won't Reach Login Screen
Dec 15, 2011i have a Dell Vostro 1520 and im running Windows 7 with a 32bit. It is only 2 years only. It started about a month ago. I was on my laptop viewing and deleting some unwanted photos i had. A few minutes later i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted. So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo. When i went back to my photos and went into the album, it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder. Please press continue to get full permission. I clicked continue and i got the access i should have. Now i tried many more random folders and the same thing happened. Also when i came out of the folders, the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it. After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on. The laptop will power on like normal. I can press f12 for the boot options. which i have already tried many times. I also tried it in safe mode and what-not, but still nothing. I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal. I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine. So after the Dell logo on the screen, it goes black and stays that way with the cursor. You can move the cursor around no problem. I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile. Its flashing orange and blue. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the battery. Because my laptop will not charge with the AC adapter in it for many months now. It will only stay powered on with the AC adapter plugged in. One more thing. The LED lights over the buttons. None of the are flashing, besides one, on the far left. And i cant find out anywhere what this LED light stands for.

The within 20 minutes he got the BSOD and the system rebooted. Now he can't get Windows to fully start. We've tried all of the options from F8 with no success. We have the Toshiba System Recovery Disk but it won't launch. (The Boot sequence has been changed to boot from CD/DVD and then the Hard Drive.)The Memory Diagnostic from the Windows 7 disk ran fine with no errors. I'm thinking I might need to re-format/wipe the drive to start fresh but don't know where to obtain a boot CD(no floppy drive on this laptop). Does anyone recommend a software that I can purchase to clear everything without destroying the CD/DVD accessibility so I can then use the System Recovery Disk to put it back to the original factory Settings?

Mar 26, 2011My computer has a problem with crashing while playing a video in full screen. When it crashes the screen turns black while the speakers give out a buzzing noise. Everything is unresposive the only solution is to turn it off with the power button. It happens in any full screen video online or offline and even visualizations from windows media player and iTunes, but only in full screen. I don't think it's overheating either because sometimes it takes 30 mins to crash and other times it will crash immediately when put in full screen. *I've tried setting it back to factory settings thus reinstalling windows. *All the directx features are working with no reported problem there.* I don't think it's a memory issue in the computer, as my specs are:

I tried to do systems restore but it said that I did not have a system restore point. I cannot start in any safe mode. I have all my pictures, uni work etc., and I am terrified I've lost it all. I've only had the laptop a year.

Mar 18, 2012While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing
Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.

Mar 24, 2012Recently, my computer starts up windows and after the loading screen it just sits at a black screen forever with a cursor and it doesn't even make it to the log in screen. I have tried safe mode with the same results. What I've Done So FarTried to Repair Startup with Windows DVD Tried to use sfc /scannow at boot (Says pending changes and needs to restart) Tried logging into my Ubuntu partition and virus scanning (None found) Tried copying Reg Files from Regback into config while I was in Linux Tried to Repair Install (But I can't log into Windows ) Tried to bootrec /fixmbr /fixbot /RebuildBcd (Which destroyed my dual boot linux grub, but I was desperate. And still nothing) Interestingly though, after I do /RebuildBcd command it says something like "Found Windows Installations: 0" Tried to System Restore (Gave me an Error, wouldn't you know) At this point I'm not to confident that this can be fixed. If anyone has any ideas I'm willing to try. Or if you have any snazzy suggestions on how I could fix it using another computer, I have a different Windows Pro x64 computer that I can put the HD in if there's someway I can save my data/fix it/repair install from there. I just don't know how.
Edit: I finished the chkdsk and there were no bad sectors, though it did give me a message "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."I did a Windows Defender Offline scan with no viruses and I'm currently scanning with Kaspersky Rescue disk. I don't believe it is a virus, I think it's a corruptregistry at this point. I had just cleaned my registry with CCleaner before the shutdown that led to this >.<

They are both HP Pavilion p7-1233w 64 bit Desktops running Win 7 Home Premium SP1.During Windows setup of PC #1, it asked for a restart. When the PC powered back up, it had a black screen from the start (before the Post screen). I power cycled it several times with no luck. Even switched monitors and video cables. The next morning it started normally with perfect video.I assumed the Refurb PC had a problem and set it aside for return.Been setting up PC #2 for a few days now with lots of restarts. All was well, until I did a restart just now. There was the identical problem. Power cycled the unit twice, and still had the black screen.Then I unplugged the PC, and pressed the power button to discharge the capacitors (fans ran for a few seconds). When I returned power and started the PC again, it functioned normally. I've done 10 quick restarts since to try and replicate the problem, but it only happened that once.
I love these PC's, and I love Win 7, so I hate to give them up. But I don't want the video freezing up on me every time I do a restart. I assume now, that PC #1 is not necessarily defective.Since this is occurring before the post screen, I wasn't sure if it could be windows related.

Oct 4, 2012I got a bad virus on my computer about a week ago. I decided to use my windows 7 installation disc to reformat my disk drives and reinstall windows 7. The installation goes smoothly and I am able to login to windows. But after I install drivers and updates, then restart the computer, I get the "starting windows" screen with the swirling logo. I can hear the chimes that sound when I get to the login screen, but the screen is black. I can make the cursor appear by moving the mouse, but I cant do anything else. I never created a system restore disc, so I dont have that to help me.I have done some tinkering and will tell you what did not work so far.First, like I said, I used the windows 7 install disc to reformat my disk drives. Then, I reinstalled windows. I installed the updates for my graphics card and motherboard. When I restarted, I got the black screen. I restarted the computer and used F8 to do a system repair. This detects no problems. I tried to use the "startup repair" on the windows installation disc. This does not recognize a problem. I have tried it several times. Same result. Next, I tried to use the repair options on the windows install disc. I went to command prompt and typed in: bootrec.exe /fixmbr, bootrec.exe /fixboot, and bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd. (An interesing note: When I used the RebuildBcd command, it said that it detected 0 windows installations.) After the first time I did that, I tried the startup repair and got my first and only error message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automaticaly". I checked the details and it said "Problem event name: StartupRepairOffline". If you need the rest of the details, I can provide them. But I tried the repair again, and there was apparently no problem. Yet, still got the black screen.I then reformatted again, deleted both drives, and made new ones. I tried to install windows again, and I can get to my desktop.(One thing I noticed is that before I install updates, the computer is saying that my monitor is a "Generic PnP monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter". I dont know much about computers so this may be normal before installing the graphics card updates.)This time, I was connected to the internet and tried to install the system updates first. After all 120+ updates installed, I restarted and got the black screen again.I decided to use the install disc again to reformat, delete, and recreate the hard drives. This time I tried to install windows on the second hard drive (Disk 1) Again, the install went smoothly. I started installing the graphics card and motherboard drivers, but this time it told me that my disk drive D needed to be formatted before use. I reformatted it (this took MUCH longer than the format option on the install disc), installed the drivers, and restarted. I still cant get into the login screen. Finally, I used the install disc to reformat, delete, and recreate the disk drives. This time I installed windows on the first hard drive (drive 0) again and got to the desktop. Now I tried to install the motherboard drivers first, then restart. I did this and was able to restart and get back to the desktop. Next, I installed the graphics card dirvers, and then restarted. Black screen again.

Apr 8, 2010his problem started with XP and I decided to upgrade to win 7 pro.
My PC has a black screen on wake up more times than not. Wake up is set for a login screen normally. My settings are screen saver after 10 mins then send screen to sleep in 20 mins, no hibernation mode, rest machine remains alive, runs 24/7 normally.
I have swapped the power supply and graphics card with ones that work in the same model PC and no joy.
Driver Is Not Signed
Jan 5, 2010In my windows 7 installment it gives the error: driver not signed. I need this RAID-driver to be signed for x64. How can i sign a driver. It is the GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver.

Here's how to install Windows 7 using unsigned drivers:
Copy your unsigned driver to USB stick or other media (you will probably need only one .inf and a .sys file)
Start Windows 7 setup.
At this point, Do Not Select 'Install' as your RAID controller will not be detected if it's not supported by Win7
Click 'Repair'.
Wait for the pseudo-scanner to finish.
Click load driver.
Point to your unsigned driver (the .inf file) you previously copied to USB stick or other media.
Wait again for the pseudo-scanner to finish.
Click the 'x' in the corner to close the repair mode.
Click 'Install' to start the installation.
Now your RAID controller and RAID Drives will be detected and there will be no warning of unsigned drivers.
Everything should proceed just fine from this point on.
Windows 7 Home 32 Bit Home Edtion Is Stuck On Starting Windows Screen
Mar 26, 2011My 2 year old $400 Acer laptop that has win 7 32 bit home edition locked up while surfing last night and I cannot get it to open.I tried safe mode it hangs up on the starting windows screen. I hit F8 and tried the launch start up repair function to no avail.When the laptop locked up the screen went off white like someone was trying to IM me and nothing opened. I pulled the battery out to shut the laptop down since I didn't like the look of what was happening and none of the buttons or other prompts would work.I have a current version of McAffe and was using Firefox.

Jan 4, 2013I've been up for the most part of the night trying to solve my problem with a few of my drivers not working. Most of the time I can figure this stuff out on my own, but this one has me stumped. I will provide pictures of the drivers that are not working, and have the "Code52" error. The things that I have tried to do:
1. Ran sigverif.exe - the files was not signed
2. Tried to rename the files and re-install.
3. Booted into Advanced Boot Options and disabled driver signing.
4. Started in safe mode and installed the drivers, but after reboot I had the "Code52" again.
5. Ran a full system scan with Trend Micro.

Cannot Reinstall OS , It Says There Are No Signed Drivers?
Dec 11, 2012My computer began acting weird a few days ago. The wireless service was not working. I tried manually starting the service but it gave me errors. I decided I would just reset to an earlier config, but to my amazement all of the backups were gone. In addition, I couldn't reset to factory setting, as it gave me weird errors. I thought it might have been a virus or something so I proceeded to wipe the hard drive with some random program I found on cnet. However after starting the program it gave me the BSOD, and now whenever I boot the computer, it would ask me to install the OS. Normally, this would be fine, but whenever I try to install it (from the windows 7 CD), it always gave me a "no signed drivers detected" message near the bottom. On the screen, my hard drive and unused space also do not show up. So now, my computer just sits there without an OS. I am at a loss as to what to do. If anyone needs additional information,
TL;DR: My comp has no OS and I cannot reinstall because it says there are no signed drivers.
