System Goes To Black Screen Before Login/welcome Screen After Windows 7 32-bit Upgrade?

Sep 2, 2012

My son has a Toshiba Satelite P205 that he just upgraded from Windows XP Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit. After the upgrade completed the computer booted fine. The within 20 minutes he got the BSOD and the system rebooted. Now he can't get Windows to fully start. We've tried all of the options from F8 with no success. We have the Toshiba System Recovery Disk but it won't launch. (The Boot sequence has been changed to boot from CD/DVD and then the Hard Drive.)The Memory Diagnostic from the Windows 7 disk ran fine with no errors. I'm thinking I might need to re-format/wipe the drive to start fresh but don't know where to obtain a boot CD(no floppy drive on this laptop). Does anyone recommend a software that I can purchase to clear everything without destroying the CD/DVD accessibility so I can then use the System Recovery Disk to put it back to the original factory Settings?

Black Screen After Login, Won't System Restore

Mar 13, 2012

I have Windows 7. Earlier, my computer was acting funny after trying to open some videos from my camera that I had connected. I retarted hoping it would act normal. I got the opposite. Every time I try to start up, it goes to a black screen after I put in my password. I will not let me open task manager or anything. I see a cursor that I can move around, but just a black screen. I've tried to google the problem (I am currently in safe mode) and tons of people said to do a system restore. Problem is, it says I haven't created any restore points and to open up system protection.

Here lies ANOTHER problem in my awesome string of luck. When I click on it, the system protection tab is not there. It's completely missing. I tried going to start, right clicking computer and going to properties. Guess what? It's not there either like it should be.

Dell Vostro 1520 Black Screen Won't Reach Login Screen

Dec 15, 2011

i have a Dell Vostro 1520 and im running Windows 7 with a 32bit. It is only 2 years only. It started about a month ago. I was on my laptop viewing and deleting some unwanted photos i had. A few minutes later i realized that i deleted a photo that i wanted. So i went to the recycling bin and restored that photo. When i went back to my photos and went into the album, it said something like i do no have permission to access this folder. Please press continue to get full permission. I clicked continue and i got the access i should have. Now i tried many more random folders and the same thing happened. Also when i came out of the folders, the folders had a big pad lock sign on the front of it. After that i shut down the laptop and went to turn it back on. The laptop will power on like normal. I can press f12 for the boot options. which i have already tried many times. I also tried it in safe mode and what-not, but still nothing. I can hear the fan and stuff spinning up like normal. I have also put and CD into the CD ROM and that spins up fine. So after the Dell logo on the screen, it goes black and stays that way with the cursor. You can move the cursor around no problem. I should also add that the battery light is and has been flashing for a good wile. Its flashing orange and blue. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the battery. Because my laptop will not charge with the AC adapter in it for many months now. It will only stay powered on with the AC adapter plugged in. One more thing. The LED lights over the buttons. None of the are flashing, besides one, on the far left. And i cant find out anywhere what this LED light stands for.

Black Screen Of Death During Boot, Before Login Screen

Mar 18, 2012

While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing

Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.

Black Screen With A Cursor, Login Screen Won't Appear

Oct 4, 2012

I got a bad virus on my computer about a week ago. I decided to use my windows 7 installation disc to reformat my disk drives and reinstall windows 7. The installation goes smoothly and I am able to login to windows. But after I install drivers and updates, then restart the computer, I get the "starting windows" screen with the swirling logo. I can hear the chimes that sound when I get to the login screen, but the screen is black. I can make the cursor appear by moving the mouse, but I cant do anything else. I never created a system restore disc, so I dont have that to help me.I have done some tinkering and will tell you what did not work so far.First, like I said, I used the windows 7 install disc to reformat my disk drives. Then, I reinstalled windows. I installed the updates for my graphics card and motherboard. When I restarted, I got the black screen. I restarted the computer and used F8 to do a system repair. This detects no problems. I tried to use the "startup repair" on the windows installation disc. This does not recognize a problem. I have tried it several times. Same result. Next, I tried to use the repair options on the windows install disc. I went to command prompt and typed in: bootrec.exe /fixmbr, bootrec.exe /fixboot, and bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd. (An interesing note: When I used the RebuildBcd command, it said that it detected 0 windows installations.) After the first time I did that, I tried the startup repair and got my first and only error message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automaticaly". I checked the details and it said "Problem event name: StartupRepairOffline". If you need the rest of the details, I can provide them. But I tried the repair again, and there was apparently no problem. Yet, still got the black screen.I then reformatted again, deleted both drives, and made new ones. I tried to install windows again, and I can get to my desktop.(One thing I noticed is that before I install updates, the computer is saying that my monitor is a "Generic PnP monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter". I dont know much about computers so this may be normal before installing the graphics card updates.)This time, I was connected to the internet and tried to install the system updates first. After all 120+ updates installed, I restarted and got the black screen again.I decided to use the install disc again to reformat, delete, and recreate the hard drives. This time I tried to install windows on the second hard drive (Disk 1) Again, the install went smoothly. I started installing the graphics card and motherboard drivers, but this time it told me that my disk drive D needed to be formatted before use. I reformatted it (this took MUCH longer than the format option on the install disc), installed the drivers, and restarted. I still cant get into the login screen. Finally, I used the install disc to reformat, delete, and recreate the disk drives. This time I installed windows on the first hard drive (drive 0) again and got to the desktop. Now I tried to install the motherboard drivers first, then restart. I did this and was able to restart and get back to the desktop. Next, I installed the graphics card dirvers, and then restarted. Black screen again.

Here are my computer specs:

Windows 7 64bit OEM
EVGA P55 FTW motherboard
EVGA GTX570 graphics card
Intel i5-760 processor
Intel patriot 8gb ram

Windows 7 Black Screen When Login?

Jul 9, 2012

I have a HP Pavillion G6 - Windows 7 Home Premium

I still have warranty, and today when i start up my computer it just froze and it commanded me to go to Windows Recovery ( recommended ) it went through my files and tried to repair it and i had to system restore.

as i system restored into later save date, it said that it failed?! so i didn't know what to do there. i tried hardware resetting and it didn't work.

also when i turned on my computer it would sometimes go to the login screen and it would say welcome for hours and hours, untill it became a black screen and it froze with the cursor..

When i turn on my computer it would always flash or blink once on the caps lock.

Black Screen Before Windows Login

Oct 18, 2012

i was trying to ghost my old HDD to my new SSD. So i got my software, turned off my computer and installed my SSD. My computer wouldnt boot off my old HDD so i looked in my BIOS menu for boot order. I seen that my SSD was set for slot 1 and my HDD was slot 2 for sata i thought that might be the problem, i saved and exited. Leaving my computer off i switched the sata cables and started it up again thinking that now my HDD was set for 1. I started up my comp and it started just fine, windows logo popped up and then my screen was black, i still had 1920x1600 resolution and my mouse cursor was there (small mouse cursor). I thought maybe it didnt boot correctly so i turned it off and put in my windows CD. started up again and booted off CD drive. Clicked on install windows, and clicked on Startup repair and let it run for about an hour with nothing really changng. It was getting late and i just wanted to take out the SSD and start fresh tomorrow night ( i only get 1-2 hours a night ) to get things working so i did a hard shutdown and went to bed. Tried it before work and still got a black screen with a movable small mouse cursor, tried it in safe mode with networking and i had 800x600 ( large mouse cursor) and it still wouldnt boot my desktop.my question is if i made it a slave, would i be able to salvage my important info? so when i get home tonight i have some sort of a game plan.

Windows 7 Black Screen With Curser After Login?

When user inputs credentials and hits enter it goes to windows log in screen but when it should go to desktop the user just gets a black screen with movable courser. This has happened to about 4-5 different pc's so far. My current fix is to backup their files on the network, delete their local user account and have them log in as if it was the first time again which creates a new profile and they can then log in with no problems. I saw a thread on this here already but it was about 2 years old and didnt give me any information on what is causing the problem.

Windows 7 Stays At A Black Screen After Login

May 23, 2012

W7 will start up, load files, and then stay at a black screen with a mouse. I think that the hard drive may have gone bad, and when I did a memory diagnosis, I have found that there is bad memory with my main hard drive. I do not have the original disk, nor can I access any of the files. I tried system Recovery, but it would not list W7 as an option. If someone knows where I could find those drivers to load onto a disk, that would be great. My computer is a Dell Studio 1535.

Windows 7 Boots, Black Screen On Login?

May 28, 2012

I recently formatted my main drive (upgrading from Vista to Win. 7), and it worked perfectly. It asked to install some updates, including my graphics card and everything else. Then it restarted, and updated a few registry settings ( I think somewhere around 5600-56000, alot more than a few lol), and it black screened when it came to the login screen. I tried logging in, and I could hear the sounds and everything else, so I think it's the graphics card that's the problem.I tried booting into safe mode and uninstalling/reinstalling the graphics driver, but it still black screened.I checked almost every other topic about this, and I tried everything but it didn't work, but i'm still open to more common suggestions.

Right now, i'm just running on the on-board graphics in normal boot mode.System Specs:OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bitProcessor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7Processor Count: 4RAM: 6078 MbGraphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 1024 MbHard Drives: C: Total - 280139 MB, Free - 253850 MB; D: Total - 420255 MB, Free - 420153 MB;Motherboard: Acer, EG45MAntivirus: None, I will be adding Kaspersky later.

I have installed Windows 7 on Mac Bootcamp. It has been working perfectly fine for the past year but it is now restricting me to login with a black screen. I rebooted my computer multiple times but the outcome is always the same: I would see the Windows icon (4 coloured squares), it would then show my cursor and then the screen would go black. I have tried to repair my computer but it says that there are no errors.I also tried to check for any other possible errors but they all come out negative.

Black Screen Before Login?

Jul 15, 2011

Currently, my computer will start up normally, and will, after the logo boot, end up at the login screen, except all I see is a black screen with the "Windows 7 Home Premium" at the bottom, and the red button on the bottom right, as well as the accessibility tools on the left side towards the bottom. I also have a working cursor. I dont see a user selection or anywhere to click anything except for the mention icons. I dont know what happened, but prior to this issue, I ran a Disk Check on startup as prompted. When I returned to the computer after the disk check completed, this issue occurred.

I have tried CTRL + ALT + Delete, but to no avail. I have also tried safe mode, but the same problem occurs, and all of the startup options I tried in the boot menu don't work either (Last known good configuration, Low resolution, safe mode, etc etc.). I tried checking for memory errors, and running chkdsk (Disk Check command) with the proper parameters (C: Drive, /r) in the command prompt with Startup Repair, both have no solution. Also, I don't have system restore turned on, so there are no available restore points.

Black Screen After Login

I got the Windows 7 RTM quite a while ago and had no problems with it. A couple days ago, though, I recieve a black screen with movable cursor after login. I am dual-booting with Windows XP, and XP is working fine.

Task manager will open, but is 'hidden' under the black screen. Same with everything else but the cursor. I suspect this has something to do with VMware server, as this was the last program I installed (about a week ago) and it was also affecting my network adapters.

If I leave it for about 2 minutes my desktop appears and all is working fine. I did some research and have found nothing. Ive done disk checks, defrag, registry cleans, and malwarebytes and another antivirus only to come to the same result. The only thing I have come close to is that if I disable all services in msconfig and reboot it logs in quickly, but the problem with that is that none of my drivers work correctly. Black Screen And Pointer, Cannot Login

I'm having problems with my laptop on which I have Windows 7 Home Premium. I boot into the system but, after the loading logo,a black screen appears with just the mouse pointer/cursor; I can move it.It stay like that for a little and then the notebook reboots itselfs with no error or BSOD (even if I "disable the rebook on crash" using F8 at boot). One day I found my PC freezed (after an Ubuntu hibernate) and I had to force the power off.Trying to boot grub gave me errors: so I thought of a partition/disk error. With GParted I had problem loading the partitions, so with other tools I deleted the Ubuntu partition. Now I have no partition problem, but Windows 7 continue to not load and reboot.

- So I tried the "Last known good configuration". Same result.

Black Login Screen After SP3 Update

Dec 14, 2012

I am using my school tablet to write this since my other (gaming) laptop is unusable as I will explain.

A few days ago I turned on my (gaming) laptop computer and, after briefly showing the "Starting Windows" screen, the screen simply went black no login screen. There is a mouse which is perfectly responsive and moveable. I held down the shutdown button so the laptop switched off, then restarted. A screen came up saying "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)". I then deduced how this problem came about. Used my laptop the night before. Closed the laptop lid, thus beginning sleep mode. Battery probably at 15%. When the computer ran low on battery, it turned back on (which frequently happens) and, as the computer had updates to install, began shutting down and installing the updates, rather than the usual hibernation because 'Shut Down' is the default setting when there are updates. Computer runs out of power halfway through installation. Bad install (which I now know isn't the case). I turn on computer and - BINGO! The login problem occurs. Now, I repaired my computer and restored it to an earlier session. I then noticed that League of Legends wouldn't open (probably unrelated and have contacted Riot support). So this morning I decided to shutdown and install all the updates (which the battery charging, to make sure that there was no failure), which I think included SP3. The same "black screen at login" problem occured. The "VAIO" logo appears, then the "Starting Windows" screen (with the logo above). Then, blackness with a moveable mouse. I press the off button to hibernate and nothing happens, but if I hold it down the computer shuts off completely. I can't access any of my files or even login, so the only way to use my laptop is to use the Windows Repair, which takes over 2 hours.

I am using another laptop to write this.

My laptop with the issue is a VAIO VGN-NW25GF (says on the sticker on the front) running Windows 7 Home Premium using "ATI - Radeon" and "Intel Core 2 Duo". 64 Bit with 2GB of RAM and 320GB hard disk.

Black Screen After Splash/before Login?

Jun 28, 2010

Been trying to fix this for hours now. So, this morning I was gaming a bit, playing Cryostasis which I got for super cheap from the sale on Steam. You can see my system specs in my signature. You'll notice that I have a PhysX card running with ATI. The game itself has been having some freezing issues, I looked online and read there was PhysX freezes but the 1.1 patch was supposed to fix it, and that's the version from Steam. So anyway, it was running ok for a while and then the game froze up during one of the "dream sequences". I had no option but to do a hard reboot (previous freezes allowed me to ctrl+alt+del and close it). After this, I saw the windows splash/loading screen, and then the screen goes blank at the login screen. I don't see anything but I hear the chime sound. I can even login but again no video signal - the monitor can't find an input.

I rebooted into safe mode and it worked. I then ran Driver Sweeper and deleted all my ATI, Nvidia, and PhysX drivers completely. After that, I rebooted and I can get into windows with a normal login, but not again after that as it will automatically install some ATI drivers. I've treid reinstalling 10.6 and 10.5 multiple times but after install it always goes to blank screen at login. It certainly seems like a driver issue, but the drivers have been working fine for a couple months. One thing I noticed is that now when I run the Catalyst driver installs, it fails at the end trying to do the "Drag and Drop Transcoding" which I know is a Windows feature so maybe that's a part of the problem.

I've taken out my Nvidia card completely to rule out incompatibility issues. I've taken off the Crossfire bridge and even removed the 2nd card. As I stated, I've completely deleted everything relating to ATI and Nvidia and tried a fresh driver install of the ATI drivers with no luck.

I've read of people getting the blank screen after login but mine is different as it's occurring before I'm able to see the login page. I found one response where it appears the poster had the exact same issue as me and nothing could fix it, except for a system restore... Somehow, however, I don't have any restore points... I've seen it say it was creating restore points (such as before a windows update) but when I went deeper into the options I found that there was 0HDD space allotted so it probably tried to make a point then didn't save anything (I've now allotted space).

Seems like the only option I have right now is to do a reinstall of Win 7 and hopefully be able to copy over most of my files... although anything requiring an install is a huge pain in the butt since simply copying won't actually install it.
