How To Stop Win7 Using WU Drivers During Install

Jan 2, 2010

Finally moving all the main workstations over to Windows 7. In a test run yesterday - I noticed that Windows 7 jumps ahead of me in a big way right after the main desktop appears.

In the Vista/XP days - I would actually get to install my drivers in my preferred installation order. In this install - especially for graphics - before I even got to install my preferred nVidia drivers - I see that Win 7 has already grabbed and installed 195.65 - presumably from Windows Update - which I do not want.

What's the trick (if any) at "first" desktop to get Windows 7 to hold it's horses and let me install what I want?

Install Mobo Drivers Or Keep Win7 Drivers ?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a simple question, I recently fresh installed Windows7 and was wondering if I should Install the new mobo drivers from the ASUS site (i have an ASUS P5Q Pro) or should I just keep the current microsoft drives for all the chipsets/lan/etc. The only Thing I installed was the Realtek sound driver. Would there be any advantages to install proper drivers? because right now my computer runs perfectly stable and smooth using the Windows7 ones.

How Can I Test 64-bit Drivers/2nd Win7 Install

Jun 27, 2009

I'm currently using Win 7 RC 32-bit on this comp, and am looking to move to 64-bit by the time RTM comes round.

My question is - everything except my scanner has 64-bit drivers. There is this program that included 64-bit compatibility with a large number of scanners, and mine is listed.

Is there anyway I could install a second Windows 7 on a third partition (of this same hard drive), and try the driver with that to check it works? As I understand it you can't test drivers etc. in a VM install.

Clean Install To Win7, No Drivers Found

Sep 20, 2009

I've been searching for an our or so all over trying to find something that helps me with this problem, but nothing seems to be working. I have an HP dv6780se Pavillion Laptop.

I put a new hard drive in it to restore and the restore disks are working correctly. It will install windows vista, but then when it starts installing all the bloatware the computer restarts and says OS not found.

So, I figured I'd install windows 7 since I was planning on doing it anyway.

My problem now is that I'm wondering since restore disks only install vista and don't finish the other hp stuff that the drivers aren't getting installed for vista...hence when I try and do a clean install of Windows 7 it says no drivers found. Any idea what I can do to get my install going?

Clean Install Of Win7 Doesnt Find HD Drivers

Dec 18, 2009

Ok, i built a "whitebox" for a friend at work and they wanted to windows 7 64bit. So, i built the machine and have been trying to figure out how to get it to recognize the HD for the past 4 hours... mainly thanks to Samsung for making impossible to find drivers on their website for the Spinpoint F1 HD102UJ 1TB hard drive and i am also having problems finding drivers from the Gigabyte website... Anyway, suggestions? I gone through all the suggestions about checking the BIOS for RAID settings, but there is only 1 drive in this machine.

Furthermore, after trying to find the drivers online for about 2 hours...i ended up reformatting the drive from the utility disk that samsung had on their website..

Win7 (32bit) To Win7 (64bit) Upgrade Install Error

Nov 8, 2009

I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version)

I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32

Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)

Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit

When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".

I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.

I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Win7 Installer Fails With BSOD & Error Code: STOP

Oct 27, 2009

upgrade my system from Windows XP Pro SP3. The setup starts and gets past creating a user account, setting a computer name etc and then restarts and looks like Windows 7 is going to startup and then I get a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH with:

STOP: C000021a [Fatal System Error}

The intial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xC0000001 0x00100400)

It then mentions about dumping the memory out to disk and reboots. If i press F8 and attempt to boot SAFE MODE I get a requester saying that setup cannot be completed in Safe Mode. If try the startup recovery the first time it says it fixed a problem and wants to restart again but it has fixed nothing. Next time the startup recovery just runs and doesn't appear to finish.

I have run the Windows Memeory Diagnostic within the setup and memory checks out fine. I initially thought the onboad audio chipset was the issue and disabled that but it made no difference. I did get one successful installation but it eventually crashed and burned with the same error after approximately 12 hours.

Abit Drivers For Win7

Nov 1, 2009

I'm having some problems with my motherboard now with Windows 7. It's an Abit motherboard and I'm getting a warning for the action center which states: "Your power management system is missing a driver" and suggest the uGuru 3.1X.

Now is where things get annoying, Abit is shut down and their driver downloads are dead. Even if they were alive, there has not been made any utility for Windows 7 as it weren't out at the time they closed.

So I have a few questions I hope some of you can answer:

- Is it at all vitial to have this driver?

- Is it anywhere I can get one which work with Windows 7?

if none of the above

- Can I somehow force the action center to ignore this "problem"? I hate having unsolved problems poping up there

A little additional question, anyone else having stability problems with the most recent windows messenger client on Windows 7 64bit?

Canon D 860 Win7 64 Bit Drivers

I have already tried windows updating and I have driver detective as well. Struck out on all fronts. I looked at someone else's thread and I sent Canon support yesterday. They have not responded although they acknowledged the E-mail. Yeah, I guess this old bird is being sent to the old age home.

Win7 Won't Boot After Install Without DVD Using 2 HDD

Oct 28, 2009

So, I have an interesting problem with installing Win 7 from XP. I'm doing a full install over the old XP drive.

I have an unusual hardware configuration. I have 2 HDD's, one is SATA, and the other is on a legacy IDE. The SATA drive is a WD Raptor which I use for the OS and the IDE is a slower, larger drive I use for storing data. Additionally, the IDE drive is the Slave on the IDE chain. In XP, this worked great, because the system would boot to the SATA drive and I could use both drives.

When I went to install 7, both drives appear in the list, but their letter names were reversed: the OS drive was listed as "D" and the data drive was listed as "C". I didn't think much of it until later. I installed on "D" which was the SATA drive. After install, I noticed that my IDE drive wasn't listed in file explorer.

So I opened the Disk Manager and found that both drives were listed, but only the install disk was active. However, the IDE drive was Disk 0, and the SATA drive was Disk 1 and labeled "C:". I activated the IDE drive and it became "E:" (the DVD-ROM was already "D:"). I attempted to reboot and got an error "BOOTMGR is missing". If I put in the Win 7 install DVD it will boot to the SATA drive.

I read some of the other threads here and attempted fixes using "bootrec.exe" to no avail. I finally decided to reinstall again on the SATA drive. Again, 7 listed the SATA drive as Disk 1/"C:", and the IDE drive as Disk 0/(no letter). This time, I didn't activate the IDE drive and tried to reboot. New message "No system disk...". Put in the Win 7 DVD and it boots to the SATA drive.

My current theory is that Windows 7 is getting confused about the drive ordering when creating the boot sector on the drives. I ran out of time last night, but I thought I would unplug the IDE drive and do a fresh install on the SATA drive, then plug in the IDE drive after things were booting normally.

I did check the BIOS settings, and the SATA drive is listed first in the boot order.

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe

AMD 4200+ CPU

OCZ 4GB RAM

(IDE) Hitachi 320GB

(SATA) WD Raptor 120GB

nVidia 7600GT

Can someone offer some advice on how to solve this so I don't need the Win 7 DVD in all the time?

Upgrade Over Bad Win7 Install

I upgraded from vista ultimate to Windows 7 using Dell supplied upgrade disks. This was a mistake because either I had previous problems I did not know about or the upgrade injected some. Now I have a brand new retail Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disk.

Any recommendation as to the method I should use to install it would be appreciated. If I do a normal upgrade over what I have now I am afraid I might have the same problems still there. I can't format the C: drive as it is the system drive. Any suggestions?

Win7 Will Not Install On Partition 0

Mar 15, 2009

I have an older computer that is or was being used for Win XP Pro. I put a new hard drive that is partitioned with 25gb on the C drive with two other partitions of different sizes. I set the the hard drive as cable select (later tried as Master only)

Windows 7 in cable select saw all the partitions. When set to Master it only saw Partition 1 and the rest as unallocated which seems weird.

I have the boot order in Bios set as Floppy, CD Rom and then Hard Drive.

I have an external usb DVD reader for the install disc.

When i start the pc, then press to boot from CD, it sees the install disk and the install process starts. I get to the point to select where to install and I get this Notice:

"Windows can NOT be installed on to Disk 0 Partition 1"

I hit the more info button and get this notice:

"The computer hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the BIOS Menu."

It should boot to the hard drive the way I have it setup. At least it does for Win XP.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestion as to how to get around this issue.

Unsigned Drivers Questions On 64-bit Win7

Aug 11, 2009

I currently have an old P4 running 32-bit Windows 7 RC. I don’t think I can put 64-bit on that machine, but I am considering 64-bit on the retail version when it is released in October. I tested about thirty 32-bit shareware and freeware applications on 32-bit Windows 7 RC and they all work well. My questions concern 32-bit drivers and unsigned 32-bit and 64-bit drivers on Windows 7 64-bit retail.

I have seen references to a BCedit command. I ran Bcdedit /set Bcdedit nointegritychecks ON on my Vista SP2 machine and it ran successfully. I have not tested what it will let me do as I now have no Vista driver issues. Here are my questions:

Which of these is the correct command to disable the signature check on Windows 7 RC?

bcdedit /set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

bcedit –SET TESTSIGN NO

Is there any reason to use the correct command rather than using F8 during the boot process?

Does the correct command work for both unsigned 32-bit and unsigned 64-bit drivers on a 64-bit Windows 7 system?

Is the correct command useful on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 for driver signing issues generally?

I assume the command works for only 1 boot cycle. Given that, is there any reason to run a command to re-enable the driver signing check if one reboots again after the driver installation?

Is there any other solution other than third party software, which I would prefer to avoid as I don’t expect to run into a driver issue frequently?

What is a decent estimate of how many of my 32-bit applications that work well on 32-bit Vista SP2 will install and work well on 64-bit Windows 7 retail, assuming I use the correct command to disable the signature check?

GMA 500 Drivers Causing Issues In Win7

May 7, 2009

So, I installed Windows 7 RC today on my Dell Mini 10 and everything was smooth sailing.

At this point my only available resolution was 800x576.

Windows Updates picked up a couple of drivers, one being the Intel GMA 500 drivers. I installed the drivers and the system restarts.

The restart seems slow. I have about 45 seconds of a black screen and my cursor can be moved easily and then all of the sudden the login appears.

I login and the taskbar comes up, but the desktop is black. If I refresh the desktop my wallpaper returns and everything runs fine. The resolution at this point is 1024x576.

If I disable the driver I'm back to square one.

Anyone else experience this problem? Is there a better driver that I should be using?
