I recently started working with Windows 7 and I havent figured out yet how to set a folder to select files to download. When I go to a web form and I want to upload files from my hard drive, in all previous versions of Windows that I worked with, I used to select once the desired folder, pick a file to upload and for all subsequent file uploads, pressing the "Examin" or "Select file" button would take me to the same folder, saving me a lot of mouse clicks if I manually need to upload several files.Since I switched to Windows 7 everytime I want to upload a file, it takes me to the Documents Library and I need to navigate to the desired folder again.
In XP (and Vista), you type alphebets to select a file or folder. For example, you are trying to access a file named "My file.txt", you type "m", "y" and it goes directly to folder or files start withm and y so it's close to My file.txt. This is convenient way to find a file you need. But, it's not the same in Windows 7 anymore. Typing anything will activate the search. It narrows down the files in folder window and it shows many unrelated documents and folders. Is there a way to disable that so I only search by keywords when I press Control-F while typing only takes me to the folder or file?
Running Windows 7 Pro X64.When I right-click a file or folder and select the "Show Versions" option nothing happens.I have to click "Restore previous versions" to get a list. What is the point of the "Show Versions" option?
Whenever I downloaded a file in WinXP, a window would come up asking me where I wanted to save the file to. In Windows 7 HP, it just seems to automatically download to the current "users" Download file. How do I configure Windows 7 to work like XP?
I have, today, installed Win 7 on a new computer. I have been using XP until now. I have googled and searched through the forum for an answer to this problem but can't find anything. Either I am the only one that has it, or I am the only one that it bothers
Scenario: I have a folder with 200 audio files of various formats. I want to select only the .OGG files whose filenames start with "A".
On XP: I would sort by filename, select all the "A" files, re-sort by file type, using CTRL and the mouse, I would then deselect non-OGG files.
When I try this on Win 7 my selections are cleared when I re-sort.s there a setting somewhere that I need to change?
I tried to copy a file from a failing network drive to another nework drive, and the copy failed midway. Now when I right click on the destination file to attempt to delete it, explorer hangs. If I left click and press the "del" key, explorer hangs as well, and if I go to the command prompt and try to delete the file using the DOS "del" command, the process hangs as well.
I'm using Windows 7 64-bit. The file is obviously corrput, and I would like to get it off my drive.
Whenever I make a new text file by right clicking and selecting new text file, it says it is corrupt, but when I do it by opening notepad and selecting save as.. it works ok.
How do I select a file and locate all shortcuts/copies of it? I have a personal file on a shared network drive at work. I created a shortcut to my personal file, in order to assign a Keyboard Shortcut to open it. I need to delete the shortcut I created, but leave the original personal file that I have on my shared network drive.
During multiple file coping(file transferring) from one folders to other folders while minimizing all the folder at the time, check the status in taskbar, it showing all folder as file coping folder. is it expected in aero themas or its issue.
Let's take ApexDC++, for example. When selecting more than one file and clicking Download to=> Browse, it doesn't autoscroll to the "Downloads" folder like it did in XP. I've attached 2 pictures to understand what I'm trying to say.
The first one(Capture1) shows the window that would appear in Windows 7, no autoscroll to the Downloads folder, and the second one(Capture2) shows how it would appear in WinXP, with autoscroll to the Downloads folder. This is important when downloading many files into different subfolders located in Downloads folder. It takes less time when you have the Downloads folder right in your face.
For example, I like to download pictures, and many of them have the same name, so I'd have to download them in different subfolders. Now I have to scroll myself everytime.
This problem isn't related to ApexDC++, it is caused by Windows 7, other software behave like this, too. DoubleKiller and probably any other software where you'd have to browse to an implicit folder would behave like this.
And, of course, these things don't happen in WinXP. Is it an option in Windows 7, or is it a bug?
getting a .bat file to run when a file is added to a folder.. E.G When a file is downloaded to the downloads folder the .bat file runs and is moved to a separate location.
I just got a new Samsung RC420 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium edition OS. When I was installing a software last night, a message pops up and tells me I cannot continue installation until I close a certain program (in this case it was Adobe Updater, which was not opened at all).Today, I am trying to open "my briefcase" from a USB thumb, but a message pops up telling me I cannot open "my briefcase" as it appears a file in it is already open. But nothing else is open on my computer. It was my first time opening anything from the USB thumb.
On my FreeAgent 250GB Hard Drive, set up as a network hard drive, I have a folder with 60+GB of movies (avi. mp4. etc) and all of a sudden in turned into a 0KB file.
I can not copy a file to either the Program Files or Program Files(x36) folders. My account is suppose to be administrator. How do I set up sharing so I can use my computer and not be told I can not do certain things. I am on a home group what ever that is. When I try to share the folders I am told I do not have permission to share that folder. And I do not have permission to share or stop sharing the folder.
File with my first name has been created in the "Users" folder. (my name is the one that appears as the computer owner and administrator) This is something that I've never seen before and I want to delete it.
I have 2 program folders listed as x86 on my 64 bit machine. This 2nd x86 program folder contains games that were downloaded and installed from Big Fish games (and those are the only programs that ever go into that 2nd x86 folder).
Other info (that may be important?): I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This 2nd 86x program folder was also on my Vista install. I upgraded using the method here to create the windows .old folder process... and that 2nd 86x folder installed into my C drive automatically. (I also used the HP upgrade assistant as directed by HP.
It really drives me crazy that I don't know why I have 2 of these folders. Doesn't seem to cause any issues at all, but wanted to get advice/opinion as to why I have 2 of these and if I'll ever run into issues because of it.

My computer came with Internet Explore already installed, but I use only Firefox and Safari. So, I wanted to uninstall IE. But after I did that, I was looking through my program files, and the IE file folder was still in there. So, I tried to delete it but it said I needed permission from "TrustedInstaller". So, I gave full permission to myself but it still didn't work. Then I downloaded LockHunter and it said that the file folder was unlocked but when I went to it, it said that I still didn't have permission to delete. Then I thought that if I opened the IE file folder, I could delete the stuff in it one-by-one but I only got to delete 13 out of 27 items. I closed the file folder and tried to delete all again in the hope that I deleted something that would unlock this option for the IE file folder but it didn't. I then downloaded Unlocker but when I clicked on it to start it up, it wouldn't open. Finally, I added "Take Ownership" to my Explorer right-click menu, and that worked. But now it says, "Folder In Use: The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." So I opened Task Manager and looked but no .exe or .dll or anything else pertaining to the IE file folder was running. Sometimes when I get this message I can restart my computer and it will work but it didn't do anything this time. I'm running out of ways that I know how to fix this. I usually don't need to ask questions, especially ones so long-winded, about computers but I'm feeling kind of lost here.
There is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions. However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.
I'm the administrator of my computer But for the first time I am unable to unpack a rar file There are 7 of them each part of a 2 GB file. Every time I try to unpack the rar file any one of them I get a message at the end saying 'file access denied' I need permission from the administrator to make changes to this file
copying a file to a Web Folder in Windows 7.I am able to connect to the web folder and see the subfolders. I am able to copy a local folder to the web folder as well. The only I am facing is when I am trying to copy a file. I am getting the error 0x80070057(The Parameter is incorrect). I have checked with fiddler and it does not look like its a server side issue. And I have also tried stopping most of the services as I read on the net that having 'Kaspersky' enabled and running interfered with the I/O for webdav.

I would like to know how to set a particular folder as the default when open up a file for eg how do I set "My Documents" folder as the default folder?
I wanted to create a TXT file under the WINDOWS folder and the only thing on the context menu was FOLDER.I get the same context menu for any folder under the windows folder.
An Hp file just appeared under my c drive. I think it was after combofix was run but not sure. I was going to delete it based on some people saying you can...but then I saw nvidia, driver, realtech speakers and things of the sort. Should I not delete it, or can I? Can I move it.
you know when you have 2 folders with the same name and the computer asks you if you want to replace it, keep both and such ? well, I did that to a very important folder that was on my external hard drive, now I don't know what to do is there any way to recover the folder to its version before I replaced it?ps: information - I replaced using a mac OSX Lion, but I can use any softwares for windows since the folder is on my hard drive not on my laptop - also, they were photos, which I edited with photoshop, so maybe there's something I can do in photoshop, maybe? - it wasn't deleted, it was replaced!
i accidentally deteled some files from an SSD (personal files, not windows stuff) and I've tried recovering them with different recovery programs but nothing seems to work? tell me if I can recover some files from an SSD with recovery programs?
As im having a clearout and tidying up storage folders prior to new back ups - is there a way in Win Explorer or a third party utility to see total size of a folder so when i look at a list of HDD contents i can see which is using up most disk space? each folder may have sub folders as well as files, but apart from right click to Properties i would like a quick quick way of viewing folder size. or even sorting by size rather than folder name. The Size column after Date Modified and then Type isnt wont show a total size. Surely theres a way of Windows or a utility that can show the total size of a folder??I can then quickly go to a folder which has a large content and see if i can delete some of its contents. Folders like "Photos" is obviously going to be large, but others arent! Also as i still get confused about the way WIN Backup works im seriously considering Acronis so as to have incremental backups.
I want to set up a foldertemplate with specific foldercolums like:
- document-id - client-id - title - date - author - name - origin
I can do this very easely, but i can't add data corresponding the columns to a file. The goal is to have a list of different file-types like word, excel, pdf, ... in one folder. Those files have to contain the information corresponding the columns, e.g.:"A.1.1 _ P090402/1 _ title of the original file _ 27/06/1950 _ CocaCola _ windows-name _ mail etc".this seems to be impossible because every file is different: the one let you insert one of the specifications (but often not all...), the other doesn't accept changes (like pdf).
I am using 7 Ultimate. Two days ago I was tempted to try I.E.9, D/L it but decided it wasn't for me.Did the uninstall in "Add/Remove".Later I realised that my yellow folders, from "My Docs" etc down to folders I'd gathered work in would not now open with left clicks, only with R click and "Open". The message I get is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing these actions. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel".how do I define my "yellow" folders in order to assign 'em to something that will open them with? If I drag "My documents down to the taskbar and pin it to Windows Explorer then it will open from there with no problem.I gather that Windows Explorer is the programme to link 'em to but how?
