Clean Install Onto Secondary Internal Drive
Sep 28, 2009I have a Core 2 Duo PC with 2 SATA internal drives:
Seagate 320 gig, with C and D partitions. C contains a legit retail upgrade version of Vista Home. D is for data.
Western Digital 640 gig, with a single E partition, currently used as backup.
I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium retail upgrade at the discounted price a few months ago and expect it in a month.
My Seagate drive is running low on space and I want to retire it. I would like to boot to the Win 7 DVD, have my Vista install on the Seagate recognized, and then do a clean install of Windows 7 on the Western Digital drive, currently E.
I hope to buy another considerably larger backup drive shortly to replace the Western Digital as a backup drive.
Will the WD drive be available as a location for the installation in these circumstances?
Any previous time I have installed MS operating systems, I always chose to install to the same drive as the existing OS. This time things are different due to little space on the Seagate drive. Windows 7 would certainly fit on my current C, but I want to retire that drive.
Or will this remain a complete unknown until some time after October 22?
Or will I be forced to install to the Seagate and then somehow migrate the install to the WD?
I have not played with the RC, so I don't know what options are normally presented during the install.
Get All Parts Of Program Together?
Oct 20, 2011I just installed a new version of Microsoft Office 2010 and had 2007 before.I installed it in addition to keeping the 2007, which is fine. What I want to figure out how to do, it to get all the folders of 2010 that are scattered around my "start" menu, put them all together under a folder named 2010 and then get that folder under Programs. Right now, some are on the desktop and other places.I don't really want to try messing around with it because I have a tendency to screw things up!

I would like to keep my AMD cpu as it seems to meet criteria of the games i play, My graphics card is running smooth and does ok for it's self for the time being, But this will be upgraded to a 6870 in time to come. I would also like to stay on the AMD side of hardware.The problem is i don't know what i should look for in a motherboard. Also the same with ram, with boards i've looked at and ram ranging from 1666mhz the MOBO requires OCing. trying to find these parts as my main concern is Battlefield 3, it ran perfect on high but i just wanna give it the extra boost to ultra.

Mar 2, 2011I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Professional, with service pack 1 installed. This worked at one time, before I upgraded to Professional and added service pack 1 (or at least I set up the backup one time). I tried to change the time to run the automatic backup in "Control Panel - System and Security - Backup and Restore". The link inside the window named "change settings" didn't do anything. So I turned off the schedule thinking that might let me change the settings. Now neither the "change settings" nor the "turn on schedule" links do anything. Now I have to do the backups manually. I am a firm believer in backing things up to a network drive every night.I run 4 different automatic malware / spyware scans every night and I am usually clean except for a couple of tracking cookies.

Jul 18, 2012I've been trying to change the motherboard and cpu in my current computer. After hooking everything up, the computer runs till the windows 7 loading screen, then stalls and restarts. Upon restart I'm brought to the "windows has failed to start" message and attempting to repair through that yields no results. I hooked my old parts back up to make sure the hard drive was still good and it is. With the old parts everything boots normally.
The new parts I'm putting in are;

Sep 23, 2009i have this problem whereby whenever i resume the computer from sleep, the dvd drive disappear from "my computer" and device manager. It could not be detected as well. All the hard disks were detected.
The only way was to restart the computer.
The dvd drive is connected via the IDE cable to the mobo , using the Jmicron IDE/Raid chipset.
may i know if there is any remedy to this ?
Replacing An Internal HD In A Desktop?
May 30, 2012I have a three yr old hp Pavillion desktop. HD has totally conked out. Was going to just get a new one, but was wondering about the feasibility, and ease, of just replacing the HD. What am I letting myself In for ?
It looks like it will cost me around $ 100 to buy a new drive, so it will be a pricey experiment if it does not work out. Lost a lot of the paperwork, so am not fully sure as to what,is in it now. I looked inside, and apparently it is a Seagate 1 TB drive. 7200 rpm. SATA, 3 GB/sec
Has the dimensions of approx. width of 4 inches and depth of 6 inches. Is this what is called a 3-1/2 inch drive ? So, what do you think ? Worth a try ?
Will the electronics in this 3 yr old pc support a new hd with its built in new electronics O.K. ?
If I decide to try just replacing the drive, what should I buy ? What should I be aware of In regards to buying a hd for my old pc ? And, do they come pre-formatted ? If not how is this handled ?

3TB Internal HD Not Installing Correctly?
May 31, 2012I have 3 internal hard drives and am trying to add a 4th. The ones that I have are a 1TB (Boot), a 2TB MBR, and a 3TB MBR. When I try to install the 2nd 3TB one and go into Disk Management to create the partitions, it only shows this 4th HD as being 746.52GB! In fact, I have already returned one to the store thinking there was something wrong with the drive but obviously it was not

Jul 15, 2012I had a 2 TB, and 3TB Seagate Go HDs and decided they would be best used as internal drives, turns out they both crashed completely upon SATA connection in the motherboard, I first guessed probably due to the difference in boot record. Upon reformatting in NTFS, I have found that the drives run very sluggish, I have been debating on just buying a new USB drive and copying my files, then getting rid of these 2 HDs. This doesn't make sense to me as I used to think all HDs were the same, does anyone know any reason why these 2 external drives are killing my system performance after they were made into internal drives (also why would they completely crash before).

(Bios checks ok, disk has no scratches, and both DVD writers return the same results.)To help prove the integrity of the SSD (still under warranty) I would like to now try doing a temp OS install on another internal HDD. There are 2 of those, each with data on them. Each HDD has only one large partition, as in drive D & drive R.What is the detailed procedure in preparing one of those HDDs in order to accept a temporary OS install, while still preserving the existing data on that physical disk? I must also be able to identify which disk is which (new partition?) when it comes to finding the "new" disk when loading the Windows 7 install software?
