How To Repair Current Pending Sectors On External Drive

Aug 1, 2012

One of my external drives (WD) appeared a warning in SMART status:

C5 Current Pending Sector Count
Current = 200
Worst = 200
Threshold = 0
Raw values = 1

If this is repairable problem, what is the best tool to repair this?

Windows 7 Unresponsive - Current Pending Sector Count Yellow

Oct 17, 2012

I bought this computer three months ago, and had no problems, up until now. It all started with it freezing up all of a sudden, forcing me to restart. But the display didn't show up. Tried again. Didn't work. Eventually, I removed my GPU and placed it back again, thinking it was loose. Then it finally worked.

Then it happened again. So after taking out my graphics card twice, it finally started working, but my HDD started making strange sounds. A sound I've never heard before, and only occurred during start up. I shrugged it off.

Now I start getting these sort of instances, when what ever program I have open, stops responding and Windows get's pretty laggy. The Windows Explorer (Not IE, the tool bar thing) also is unresponsive. I know it can't be a virus, Trend Micro showed no signs of anything after I scanned my computer a bunch of times.

So I did what any sane person would do, I did a bit of research on the net, and found this thread on this forums. The person here had a similar problem that I did. After reading most of the comments, I downloaded HDD SMART, as instructed, and apparently "Current Pending Sector Count" is yellow.

System Repair Pending Which Requires Reboot To Complete

Jan 12, 2012

When I go to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsPerformance Information and Tools and click "Rate this computer," it crashes before it's done.Desktop Window Manager Sessions Manager is disabled, not running, and the option to start it is greyed out. sfc scannow didn't finish, so I ran it at boot (url) That gave me the error "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete." I rebooted into windows and then back to the disc several times and got the error each time. My computer does not have a pending.xml file. Since sfc scannow wasn't working, I tried to do a repair install (as described here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutoria [...] ml?ltr=R). I ran the compatibility check (by clicking "upgrade" after starting setup) on the windows 7 disk and it gave me this message: "Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing." Restarting, however, does not accomplish this. What can I do? It seems my main problem right now is finishing up whatever Windows thinks it needs to update on a reboot (I've rebooted many times since discovering the message.

Sytem Repair Pending Which Requires Reboot To Complete Not Repairing?

Mar 28, 2012

I just tried sfc/scannow and I got the following message: There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and try sfc again.I'm thinking this repair pending is from the chldsk/r I completed previously. This is great, except when I reboot, the repair does not startup and the system just goes back to the Windows Error Recovery screen I had earlier. How do I get the repair to complete?

System Repair Disk Not Seeing My External Drive

Nov 9, 2009

I created a backup and image (Win 7 Pro) on an external (USB attached) HDD and then created a Windows 7 System Repair Disk. I then booted from the repair disk and the attached external drive is not visible.

The external drive is attached via through a hub, does it need to be attached directly? Is their a generic USB Mass Storage Device driver that I can load?

I was hoping that by creating the repair disk that all necessary drivers would have been loaded to the disk, but apparently not.

How To Connect External Hard-drive To Be Used With System Repair Disk

Jun 29, 2011

I made a few months back a backup of my machine(windows 7 64bit edition). The size was like 25gb's so I saved it on my external hard-drive(I bought a case and put a hard drive(Seagate I think) in it). I know want to use this to restore my computer. So I made a system repair disk and loaded it up. However it cannot find my external hard-drive. I have "WindowsImageBackup " in my root directory of my external drive. Yet it still does not see it. I would install some drivers but I have no clue what drives I need as when I plug it into my computer and I am in windows 7 it finds my drive. What do I need to make window 7 recognize my image?

Hard Drive Bad Sectors

Apr 17, 2009

I get my PC configured and set up exactly how I like it, and then my 1 year old hard drive conks out on me!

I did a CHKDSK and it had some bad sectors and plenty of file corruption. Ran the Hitachi DFT software and it seemed to think it has rescued it, but I'm using another drive now just in case.

Luckily I could still access my e-mails when I accessed the drive from another system, and everything else is backed up via Acronis.

I am having serious corruption problems with my hard drive. I have reinstalled windows a few times now, but it always ends up being unable to boot. At the moment, my computer cannot even boot up in normal or safe mode, all my restore points have been deleted, and startup repair cannot do anything.After backing up my data and running a test with the Seagate SeaTools diagnostics in DOS, it was reported that there were bad sectors found on my Hard Disk. WiFi Icon Shows Orange Star - Pending Connection

Jun 7, 2012

I recently purchased the Dell XPS 14z and it has been working fine, however when I take it out to work (where there's no wifi connections) a red 'x' now appears on the wifi icon in the task tray. Usually it just shows an orange star and is essentially 'pending' connections. When I try and use my BlackBerry Bold 9900 to connect using the mobile internet it says that it can't connect as the wifi radio may be off? This hasn't happened before and I've tried everything to troubleshoot it with no luck.

Format HD With Too Many Bad Sectors?

Jan 16, 2013

This notebook started to behave badly and I found that the problem is the HDD.ItFor you to get the scenario: I first ran the Windows native disk tool and it reported no problem. But the system was still slow and freezing.So I made some googling and ran Check Disk GUI, but it couldn't complete its job. So I started to figure out that the thing was a bit harder than I first thought.I tried to defrag and optimize with Auslogics Disk Defrag Portable, and it too couldn't go all the way.I tried PartitionGuru, which, finally, could do the job in more than 48 hours of disk scan! And it reported: "Disk verify completed. 548 bad track areas found."After all that, things went worse: I couldn't start Windows, I got a "Missing operating system" message...Then I tried Wondershare LiveBoot 2012 to no avail.The last effort I want to try is use some portable app (running from a USB pen drive) to format the whole HDD.The HDD in question has three partitions. C: (system), D: (data, I created this partition), and a hidden one that keeps the data needed to restore the Acer notebook to its factory settings.If I succeed to format the whole thing, I'll try to make a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I want to format the whole HDD (from a USB pen drive) to have one single partition.

Chkdsk /v 8kb In Bad Sectors?

Feb 23, 2012

I made a chkdsk and found errors which were repaired by not allowing the bad fragments to be written on. When I use chkdsk /v it continually shows 8kb in bad sectors. Does anyone know if these are the bad sectors that were sent into limbo or the total bad kb on the hard drive? I have made back ups of my documents and the OS. I think that these bad sectors were caused by a recent freeze which required a bad shutdown. If so I may not be required to replace the harddrive.

External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed - Unable To Change Back?

Aug 21, 2012

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Windows 7 Finally Installed / Bad Sectors?

I've been having problems with installing a fresh OS because my harddrive. When I began the clean installation process my hard drive started clicking periodically (which didn't happen till I started) I was able to partition around these bad sectors and get the OS installed. I am now sitting at a clean desktop with the computer running fine.However, I know that these bad sectors will cause problems later and I'm wanting to know what I should do now. Is there anything I can do to kill these bad sectors and ensure my hard drive to stay proper? I realize that this shows my hard drive is going bad, but I feel if I can get this taken care of then I can keep the hard drive a while longer.
