How To CONFIGURE TP LINK ROUTER As ACCESS POINT In An Existing Network

May 11, 2012

I am having a hard time configuring my Access point. I have a DSL Router connected to our telephone line and it works fine wirelessly, Yesterday I purchased TP LINK Router to configure as Access Point to extend wireless signal up to the second floor. Now, I am wondering, should I do some re-configuration on my DSL Router before configuring my TP Link Router? Guys, Please share your thoughts and if you have knowledge on how to configure my 2nd Router to my WifiNOTE: I followed the user guide manual that came with my TP LINK router but it is no USE. I just need to know if should I reconfigure my 1st Router in order to communicate with my 2nd Router.

Setting Up A Second Router As A Wireless Access Point?

May 26, 2011

I live in the UK and use Sky as my ISP.The wireless router they supply is OK as far as the internet side of things is concerned, but for a good wireless connection to my wife's laptop in the next room, it sucks.I have a spare Netgear DG834N Wireless ADSL2 modem router and was going to use this instead of my Sky router in an effort to improve the wireless range. Unfortunately, Sky's T's & C's insist that using a different router to the one they supplied could result in my internet service being withdrawn. In an effort to prevent people using a third-party router, Sky have encrypted theirs with a username and password (not the username and password used to logon for e-mail etc) that can be retrieved with a hack, but I prefer not to go down that route. What I would like to do is use the Sky router to handle the internet side of things, and then use my Netgear router as a wireless access point to give us better wireless coverage around the house. Is this possible and if so, how do I go about it?

Wireless Access Point Added To A Router?

May 26, 2011

I currently have the following network configuration:- Broadband Cable Modem (in my den) - Router (in my den) - Computer (in my den) - Wireless Access Point (family room)My broadband cable modem is connected to my router via ethernet cable. I also have an Ethernet cable running from the back of my router directly into my PC. My current setup is in my den (I will explain). In my family room (which is away from the den) I have my television and several other wireless devices (Roku box, etc). My signal strength is low in my family room due to many walls between my den and family room. I therefore installed a Wireless Access Point in my family room by running an Ethernet cable into my basement and connecting the router in the den to the Wireless Access Point in my family room. Now here is my question: I set the SSID (or network name) of the Access Point so that it is the same as my current network name (that way I see the AP on the network). Now here is where I need to understand how a wireless Access Point works. If I have a laptop or other wireless device in my family room and search for a wireless signal, am I connecting to my router (that has a weaker wireless signal than the AP) or to my Access Point (stronger because my Access Point is a foot away from my wireless devices) since they both have the same network name? And if I connect at that strong signal and walk into another room where the signal is weaker, does my laptop automatically connect to the wireless router? How do I tell if both my router an wireless Access Point are using the same SSID or network name. I guess what I'm trying to ask is where am I getting my wireless signal from, the Access Point or the Router or both (assume I am in wireless mode).

Trouble Configuring Netgear Router As An Access Point

Nov 12, 2012

I am trying to configure a Netgear WNR3500 router to be used as an access point. My AT&T U-Verse Gateway router is in the basement of my house and the WNR3500 is in my office on the second floor of my house. I am using the Netgear Knowledge Base article ID 19852 titled "Set Up a Wireless Router as an Access Point on a Network".In Step 5 is says in Advanced tab Setup > LAN "In the IP Address field, change the LAN IP address of the router (WNR3500) to 192.168.1.100 (same IP segment of the main (AT&T) router (192.168.1.1) and uncheck the DHCP server box.I did that and the wireless access point doesn't work. The AT&T Gateway wireless router IP address is 192.168.1.254. I also tried changing the WNR3500 LAN IP address to 192.168.1.200 and the access point still doesn't work.

Note that all the XP computers are using the NetBIOS protocol; TCP/IP is not selected.

Convert A Spare Wireless Router To A Wireless Access Point

Jan 23, 2012

In a few days time I will be changing my ISP in the UK from Sky to BT.

BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.

This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.

I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

Cannot Access Router With External Network Adapters

May 31, 2011

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Dell Inspiron 560. I am using a DI-524 D-Link wireless router. I have an Acer Aspire One Net Book running Windows XP Home it is equipped with an internal wireless network adapter. I can connect/communicate with router and access the internet with no problems whatever. However, when I connect an external wireless network adapter e.g. Alpha AWUS036H I cannot get a connection when I disable my internal network adapter. I have also tried the Trendnet TEW-424UB USB external wireless network adapter and the symptoms are exactly the same. If I leave home and use another Wireless point of access I have no trouble connecting using the external adapters which means the problem is confined to my personal home network. I have removed and reinstalled my router, and the network adapters drivers etc. I have uninstalled my Norton Firewall and and disabled my Windows firewall to no avail. I have removed my WEP security features and tried to run it open with no improvement. I have connected the external network adapters on a neighbours computer running XP to see if I could connect to my home network. That didn't work as well. Bottom line is I simply cannot get an external wireless network adapter to work with my router. Yet my internal netbook adapter connects with no problems at all.

Using QoS On D-Link Router?

Jun 12, 2011

I have D-Link router 2650U, and I'd like to use QoS on my router to get the highest priority for internet, for gaming, surfing or w/e.I had some issues configure the parameters so help me please, pictures :As u see I've enabled the QoS I've enabled here QoS too, though I don't know what those options and DSCP means and if I even need it.. Here I've set its priority This how it looks after I've done making the 'QoS' for my pc/ports, not sure if its good. This is the window where I need help insert the right details to give the priority to my PC, the ports 7700~7800(range) are the ports for the game I play GunZ I found out those ports through Port Forward website. I just want to know if the QoS is right, or how can I make my whole PC with the highest priority and not just ports. Will disabling items help/harm my internet? And putting it in such order is better? or give the web client network higher priority? And also disabling all those items?

Access A Cable Modem Via Wireless Access Point?

Feb 19, 2012

This question may not be what you think it is. I am trying to fix an intermittent issue in my home environment. The issue is I am having to use wireless. Our Xfinity Cable/WAP modem sits on the top floor of our house. I am located in the basement. The wireless signal I get most of the time is very good, and by very good i mean at least 15+ mb/s on [URL]

I am taking the Cisco Network Academy classes and am familiar with network terminology and concepts. However, what I'm trying to do is take a router/WAP (using it downstairs where I'm located) and configure it to access our xfinity modem upstairs, so that I can plug in to it downstairs using a RJ-45.

Let me know what yall think. By the way the router/wap i would be using is a netgear model unknown at this moment but could easily find out.

802.11n And A New Access Point?

Nov 20, 2011

Just ordered the following router: TP-Link TL-WA901ND Advanced Wireless N Access Point: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories I have a garden shed 30 metres away so hopefully 802.11n should be able to reach. The aim is to use 802.11n so speed is better in my house and my shed. However I heard that 802.11g dongles and computers limit the network speed if you connect them to a router running 802.11n. (Can you do this?)So I might try running 802.11n on the new router (in the main house) and running an ethernet cable down from the new router to the shed where I will have my old Belkin (g) router running 802.11g (as a new access point, if you can do this- if not what are my options)On Amazon, this is the cheapest wire I could find but its not external so will it get damaged quickly if I have it exposed (will burying it underground make a difference?): High Quality 40M CAT5e RJ45 Ethernet Network Fast LAN: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Homegroup Through Access Point NA?

Feb 5, 2011

I'll try to be detailed on this. I've worked on it and read on it for almost 7 hours and I'm stuck. I'm using a Win 7 Pro desktop that is hardwired and a Win 7 Home Premium laptop wireless. Both current on all updates. My Comcast modem is hooked into a WRT160N that is hardwired to a WRT400N which is being used as an access point, and to the desktop PC. Both routers have the latest firmware. Both routers have the same SSID and password but use different channels. (2 & 6) Internet works perfect both wired and wireless through both routers. The homegroup has been set up through the desktop but I've removed and added homegroups on both machines multiple times. My problem doesn't go away. The homegroup works when the laptop is either wired or wireless using the WRT160N. It will not work at all through the WRT400N. I can be in the room with the WRT160N on the homegroup, when I move to the other router so the wireless switches to the WRT400N, it drops the homegroup. The internet stays connected just fine. Once it drops the homegroup, it can't find it until I go back to the main router. Both machines have IPv6 addresses, auto discovery is on.

Cannot Get Win 7 To See Existing Network XP PCs

Dec 5, 2009

I have a new Win 7 PC. I have an existing two XP PC home network. The existing network successfully shares files and a printer. Integrating the new Win 7 PC into my network, I have been half successful. I have internet access through the existing router on all three PCs and I have printer access on all three PCs since moving the printer to the Win 7 machine. Both XPs can see the Win 7 machine on the network.

This is where things go off the rails for me though. The Win 7 machine cannot see anything in its network except itself and the router. Keep in mind that certain apps can see back and forth. Windows Easy Transfer was able to see my XP machine from the Win 7 machine and move all my files over just fine. Norton NIS 2009 can see all 3 PCs from all 3 PCs and interact with each perfectly fine.

Likewise, the XP PCs aren't quite there yet either. They alternate between having 100% access to the Win 7 public USERS share and having no access at all - with no changes being made to the setting. Currently it is not accessible and I might not have permission to use this network resource. Interestingly with the XP to Win 7 connection fails, it fails on both XP computers at the same time. Either both work just fine or neither works at all.

All three PCs are in the same workgroup. All three have the same user account names and passwords. In Win 7, Network discovery is on along with all the other Advance Network Sharing features. I am currently sharing the Win 7 shares with Everyone. I have tried shutting the firewall off and leaving it on. All three are set at Full Trust for NIS 2009.
