I have tried every conceivable way to get Explorer to let me view my empty drives under Computer. They show when there's a disk in them. They show in the reading pane, they just won't show up as empty drives in the Nav pane. I have tried deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. Un checking the "Hide empty drives" in Folder options, adding a (1) to the registry settting "Hide drives with no Media". That setting seems to change itself back to (0) all the time. I am totally at a loss getting the empty drives to show themselves in the Nav pane.

Before I even go further: yes, the "hide empty drives" has been unchecked)I had to reinstall my machine and I was able to to see the drive letters for the internal flash card reader. However I think something might have gone wrong when I give my external HDD a drive letter that was held by one of the flash card reader).I wrote "I think" because I am not really sure since I never wanted to use the internal card reader till today so I never noticed there was an issue. Anyway, the internal card reader does not show up even when I insert a card in the reader. Basically nothing happens. I have uninstalled the "USB Mass storage device" and it gets installed without any issue but the problem is still there: I can't see the reader. the INTERNAL flash card reader has a USB slot and when I insert a EXTERNAL flash drive, the EXTERNAL flash drive shows up.

I am not looking to select a file here or there and hide them myself. The byproduct of editing certain files in video editing software is they create extra files to the files already. Is there a way I can tell windows 7, "Can you hide any files with the.sfk extension from here on out?

I just reformatted my HD and installed Windows 7-64 Ultimate again. Since I have been using Windows 7, I know most of the tweaks, but dont recall how I fixed this one. When in Windows Explorer, under Computer, I see all of my hard drives, but also see a drive for System Reserved. What tweak do I need so that I dont see the system reserved?

Assume I open WinExplorer and click on the CD-ROM/DVD drive letter E: The whole DVD content is shown. Fine. Now I eject the DVD by opening the tray. As a result the whole WinExplorer collapses and auto-closes itself. UI guess because drive is automatically removed then a drive is empty. How can I prevent this auto-closing resp. show the drive letter even if the drive is empty?

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.
I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.
how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

We have just bought new PC with Windows 7 after old PC died. Have tried to transfer files from a memory stick (mainly word / excel) onto new pc but Windows exploer says memory stick folder is empty. When put stick into laptop (running I think on XP) it clearly shows files are present. Have tried copying files onto different stick but get the same problem.
New PC has Kapersky and it scanned the stick when 1st put it in and found no problems with it.

I have an eSATA drive that has stopped functioning properly. I was trying unsuccessfully to install some completely unrelated software when I noticed that my eSATA drive was presenting differently. Under My Computer it now said that the drive was empty and there were four drives that appeared that said "Removable Disk (G)", "Removable Disk (H)", "Removable Disk (I)", and "Removable Disk (J)". When I select my eSATA drive, it says 'folder empty'. When I select one of the removable disk drives it says "Please insert a disk into removable disk (?). Whenever I reboot the computer with the eSATA drive disconnected, all five disk drives go away. I don't remember changing any settings or anything like that. One thing is odd that in device manager, the eSATA drive comes up as a SCSI drive. The device manager shows it as "WDC WD10EADS-65M2B1 SCSI Disk Device", but it is actually a "WDC WD500F032".

I have been using DVD-RAM discs for many years to store/archive pictures and other data and have never encountered any problems with them. Recommendations I have seen on the web state that this format is the most robust and reliable DVD format for data storage and that DVD-RAM discs should have a lifetime of 30 years if stored in the right conditions. I recently purchased a new Sony Vaio 'all-in-one' PC with Windows 7 64 Bit OS and I have been very pleased with it.
One of the reasons that I chose this PC was because the optical drive spec included read/write for DVD-RAM discs. I tested this facility straight away and it appeared to work perfectly with new DVD-RAM discs BUT when I put in some of my older DVD-RAM archive discs, Windows Explorer shows them to be empty, although a few of the discs it was able to read OK. I have a lot of DVD-RAM archives but fortunately, I still have an old XP (SP3) laptop which can read the discs.
So, I am in the process of copying all the archived data onto a 1TB Toshiba USB drive from where the new Sony Vaio can access the 'missing' files. The question in my mind is whether there is a fundamental incompatibility between older DVD-RAM discs and Windows 7 64 bit or whether the problem lies with outdated drivers, different formatting of older DVD-RAM discs or some other reasons. I also need to decide whether to continue archiving onto DVD-RAM discs.

RECENT PROBLEMS REQUIRING A FIX1. Although the Autoplay is selected as default, neither my DVD/CD Drive NOR MY Blue Ray drive will autoplay. They require to be opened manually.2. I am unable to use Drag-and-Drop in Windows Explorer to copy files to a removable disc OF ANY TYPE/BRAND, yet both drives will successfully PLAY from any media source.3. The Right-hand mouse click no longer shows the normal options. This situation applies irrespective of which mouse I use. For example, when I load OR try to copy files to a new disc, I get a message panel telling me the disc is not recognised and asking for it to be formatted.

I am used to XP and all my drives showing.I looked at the properties for the drives and there is the message showing, Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. I have a problem where roughly 25% of the time I insert or remove a thumb drive, my cellphone, or an external hd, windows explorer restarts. This is mostly a problem for me because certain programs in my tray are not restored and I have no way to access them after that even though they are still running. Could you help me figure out why this is happening or how to access a program if it's tray icon disappears?I've got an HP Pavillion Elite HPE and I've noticed this occurring with all of my front facing USB Ports.

On my Win 7 system, I have mapped 4 drives to a XP system using the "net use" command. They are mapped correctly as p,q,s,t on the Windows 7 system. They show up in the "Power Desk" app which is a file manager utility program. The mapped drives work correctly in that program. However, they don't show up in explorer on the windows 7 system. All other drives are shown, but not the mapped drives. Also, if I bring up the file open dialog box from an app like notepad, they don't show up either. On another Win 7 system, I can map the drives exactly the same way and they do show up in explorer. It must be a setting that is different on the Win 7 system that does not work.

Some observations:
- I have two QNAP NAS servers, which put the drives after 30 mins idle in sleep mode.
- Windows 7 network discovery sees the two NAS servers all the time.
- When you make drive mappings to shares on the NAS servers, (it seems) at random times Explorer hangs (goes into stall) when trying to browse/access files or directories. Only a reboot helps.
- I'm accessing the drives via regular SMB, no HomeGroup, no AD etc.
- When you map the drives initiallially it asks for a password. Storing that account info into the credentials manager doesn't help.
- I tried to open ports 137-139 and 445 in the firewall, but that doesn't help.
My theory is that Windows breaks by default the connection with the NAS after 15 mins of idling. That's standard behaviour. What puzzles me is that Visita didn't have this issue and Windows 7 has.
Do more people have issues with SMB shares ?

I'm not sure why this is happening, but if I attempt to open a drive in Windows Explorer, it takes a really long time (sometimes several minutes). It takes that long for the progress bar on the address bar to fill up. Does anyone know why this would be?

Let me explain. These are usb drives connected on a network usb hub. No issues with hub, software, sharing on the hub over network. The only small issue is that for example, clicking on my computer to show drives(which it works and shows them this way in preview task pane window), but on the left pane window where its the "folders" view, under my computer all i show is attached IDE/SATA and local usb attached drives.
This does not concern an issue as a mapped network drive as it is NOT setup as and not needed. Software for the hub controls all of that.
This was not an issue with xp.
[edit] Another issue with this is the right click send-to menu... shows local usb, and just shows 2 out of 4 currently connected usb network drives, all connected via the usb hub either directly plugged in, or plugged into to the network hub via another 4port usb regular hub, which by manufacturer's specs is possible and the device is allowed up to 16 connected devices to the network 4 port usb hub.
[edit #2] The above issue with the 2 of 4 drives seems to be related to NTFS and FAT32 as the 2 shown in the right click send to menu are the NTFS drives, not the FAT32.
[edit #3] Update: The drives that show in the navigation pane (left side) of explorer is the NTFS drives, not the FAT32, same with right click send to menu. Although they show up

I'm having a very strange issue after I did a boot time virus scan in Avast to remove a virus. Avast seems to have removed the virus just fine, however I can't get Windows to show directories or files any more.If I open Windows Explorer and go to C:Users it says the folder is empty. However if I right click and select properties, it calculates the folder as 10.8 GB. I can still log in fine and run software etc. This problem isn't just in the C:Users folder. My library directories show empty and I was immediately afraid I lost all of my pictures because searching for *.jpg on my system yields no results. However, I remembered the exact path to one of the file names and sure enough it opened the picture. For example when I enter the exact address in Windows Explorer:C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011MyPic.jpg it opens. But if I list C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011 it says "folder is empty". One more thing to mention is that I tried browsing files through the command prompt. Whenever I try to do a directory listing with the dir command I get the error: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 2AEE-FDC8. File not found. However, I can still cd into existing directories that I know exist. I just can't list the directories or files. Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 right after this happened because I thought it might fix the problem. Now I can't do a system restore to the point where my computer wasn't having this problem.

I've run driver updates, registry cleanups, and system restore but with no effect.

My computer was hit a malware. I was able to clean/quarantine the malware, but my startup folder is empty. From the Windows logo start, I am able to see the folders in "All Programs". But all the folders are empty. These startup folders are also empty when I navigate to their locations in Window Explorer. My programs are still installed and I can start them from their installed locations. How do I rebuild the startup folder? The "AppData" and the "ProgramData" folders are visible. I'd rather not create shortcuts to all my installed programs one at a time
