Hard Drive Speed - Samsung Spinpoint
I have just put together a new PC and have 2 Samsung Spinpoint (sata300) hard disks installed. I have had a look at Windows 7 performance utility and although all the other components rate very well, the disk data transfer rate is the same as my previous PC. Very disappointing to say the least.
I have an Asus P7P55 motherboard with 4Go RAM. Am I to believe this low rating (5.9) or is it not very reliable? If it is, do I need to tweak something?

Swapping Data Between Vista Ultimate 64 Hard Drive To Win 7 64 Hard Drive
I'm looking for a way to retain my video collection that doesn't involve moving all the files to an external drive and back again. I currently am formatting a new WD Caviar Black drive and am looking to install Windows 7 to this drive because it is faster than my current WD Caviar Blue drive. My blue drive has vista ultimate 64 bit installed is there anyway to move my data between the drives so I can reformat my primary drive (blue) and turn it into a storage disk (then make it a secondary) and use my new drive as the boot drive for windows 7? I have the MSDN release for Windows 7 Professional from my college that I burned to a bootable DVD.

Slow Drive Read Write Speed Problem
I'm using Windows 7 but I am having trouble with my C drive's readwrite speed. When I try to either move or copy a directory's contents it takes ages for the directory to be discovered and then just as long for it to be copied or moved. When I click 'more details' when copying the write speed is displayed at 5 MB/s but according to HD Tune my drive can do 40 MB/s.

Samsung F1 Drive Install Issue
Existing Setup Abit IN9 32-Max, 2gig OCZ, E6300, WD 250g, Windows 7 v7264 x32 NO issues, everything runs fine. Removed WD 250g and switched to Samsung F1 Spinpoint 750g drive (which is essentially my old gamming system running on xp). Cannot install Windows 7, regardless of version, locks halfway through install. Hard reset and Drive is no longer detected. I experienced this same issue back when I had the gaming system and the only way to fix it was to disable Command Qeueing ( which was recommended by users with same issue ). The problem seems to be with the nvidia chipset ( in this case 6) not playing nice with some Samsung drives. However, I was able to install XP and of course disable this option. PC then ran fine for a year, no lockups. Basically same system, but will not allow Windows 7 to install. Ive tried different sata ports, different partitions, different Windows 7 versions, different bios settings... Always locks halfway through.

Copied Files From External Drive To Hard Drive Taking Up Twice Space
I just installed Windows 7 and I am in the process of copying backed up files (music, pics, docs) from my external back on to my hard drive. Before doing so, I deleted the Windows.old (although two file that seem to be written in hieroglyphics won't delete...any ideas?), cleaned the disk, and defragrmented. After copying about 83 gigs of data, I looked at my hard drive's free space and it seems to have taken up twice that. On another note, I noticed that the libraries by default put this data in two locations, my user profile and the public. Since I am the only one using this computer I find that annyoing and would like to delete public but it says I need administrative help (but I am the administrator...again, any ideas?). Anyway, I removed the public locations for music, pics, and docs but it still took up over 160 gigs. Any ideas?

Hard Drive Apparently Booting From Boot Record On Second Drive
I started with a win7 pro upgrade from Vista Business on Dell's OEM 250 GB hard drive. I then clean installed win7 pro on a new solid state drive. Next, deleted the windows folder on the original drive (now it is G). Problem:Â It appears that win7 is now reading boot instructions from drive G before completing the Boot using Windows on C. This works ok, but I would prefer to be able to put an image of c: on a new partition on G...but it won't let me. If I disconnect drive G: and then run repair on C: from the install disc it does not see an operating system on C:Â I try repairs anyway, but after 7 or 8 tries it still won't boot from C:, even though the log states that a repair has been completed. Suggestions

Win 7 Not Detecting Hard Drive, Floppy And Dvd Drive
The bios is detecting all of them but Windows 7 is not. The floppy's power is on all the time and it is enabled in the bios. My 3rd hard drive is not being detected, however I did delete some windows 7 files and it was working before that. And I have no idea about my dvd drive. My other drive is working though.

External Hard Drive - Allocate A New Drive Letter
Windows 7 professional 64 bit system - upgraded from Vista Home a couple of months ago. I have two external drives - a relatively old 150Gb freecom and a 6 month old 1Tb Seagate - both of which worked fine with the old Vista Home setup, and initoially with Windows 7. A week or so before Christmas the Seagate kept 'disappearing'. It would be visible in Computer Management where it appeared to be 'running normally' but when I tried to copy to the drive it would get part way through copying then give message saying the item was 'no longer in that location'. rebooting sometimes 'brought it back' nut not always. Uninstalling and letting Windows find and install new drivers ditto. Cut a long story short - including reformatting the Seagate several times - fiddled around until it worked fine on my son in laws Windows 7 32 bit Home system - brought it back and it worked fine on mine for a few minutes - then began the same behaviour again - although I could open the files my son in law had copied onto the drive but initially occasionally not my own, until eventually it 'disappeared' again. So I kind of gave up and planned to return the Seagate under warranty and rely on the old Freecom box in the meantime. Unfortunately today the Freecom has started to do the same. I backed up a bunch of photos from my son's wedding with no problem, (as you can imagine the subject matter is quite important to me!) then when I tried to copy a slightly larger folder across (635 MB) I get the same message 'The item is no longer in this location'. Except it is. I can open the Freecom drive in Computer and open the files that did copy (about half the folder). I thought it might be a size issue so tried copying across in smaller sections - drag and drop worked once for four jpeg files at once but then the same problem. Reboot and all is well again - this time 'copy and paste' for four more files okay once then the same again! I did explore and for some reason the system was looking to read from or write to a different drive letter to the one it had allocated to the external drive. It appears as F: in Computer but when it failed it was looking for O: I'm stumped and frustrated - and now not convinced that there is any issue with the Seagate drive either. I've run scans with security software and no issues picked up on any drives. During the various reformats on the Seagate I opted for allocating a drive letter, not allocating a drive letter, let windows allocate ... etc and each time no difference to outcome, but I do wonder if the problem somehow relates to drive letter allocation. I have no problem (yet!) copying files to DVD so am currently laboriously backing up my back up onto DVDs! I'm no techie and would really appreciate some suggestions if anyone has any ideas or has heard of other instances where Windows seems to change drive letter allocation mid-session.

External Hard Drive (USB) Not Being Recognized As A Drive
I am having trouble with my external hard drive (USB) not being recognized as a drive. I have a Dell Dim 9200 which was running Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 and now my external hard drive is not recognized. It is a Venus DB3 enclosure with a WD 500 GB HD. Under Devices and Printers "Cypress AT2LP (3.03.0000.2)" shows as unspecified. Everytime I turn the HD on/off the computer recognizes that it was turned on.

Not Seeing Hard Drive
I have installed Windows 7 Build: 7000 on a dual boot configuration with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 - the problem I am getting is that Windows 7 does *not* see all my my hard drives, where as Windows Vista does. I have checked Disk Management (as I read some posts saying a drive letter had to be assigned) but the Disks cannot be detected there either. Any ideas on this one? Is this a known Windows 7 issue?

Everything On My Hard Drive Gone
Ok so i was installing blue tooth drivers into my Asus n80vn laptop. when my desktop disappeared, i thought nothing of it because i have power saver options that do that all the time. But my driver installed failed because it was not missing a piece. confused i looked into the folder i had unzipped it to.. to find that there was only an exe which i know wasn't the case when i downloaded it. then i started to notice my desktop wasn't hidden but rather everything was just gone.. i still had my trash can. and the one folder i was working out of.. well it turns out anything that wasn't being used at the second that my desktop seemed to disappear was not totally gone from my computer, and i mean EVERYTHING. little over 100 gigs gone in a blink of an eye.. after a reboot i figure out it had eaten some of my windows so i did a reformat, and a disk checker(what ever its called in Win7) and it found nothing wrong. well I'm really confused. any thoughts of what may have happened?

Installing From A Hard Drive
So I been trying to follow this guide, but it hasn't been working. I set the computer to boot from usb and then it will just sit there. I tried with an empty flash drive and it would say no bootable table or something similar, so it does detect my hard drive having something bootable and fails. So far, despite following the directions, when I try to boot from the external hard drive it just hangs there and the screen never opens (unless I need to really wait a really long time). It seems the missing detail is likely that I have to make the hard drive bootable. However, so far, all the guides that talks about making them bootable requires to clean the drive (well flash, but I guess hard drives requires that too). That defeats one of the biggest selling points in this guide, no need to delete any files (also to note, I seperated the hard drive into two partitions as directed, the cmd only see them as one). So how does one make it bootable without clearing all the files. Update: How to make your external HD bootable It seems that it should work for that person, I don't understand what is my problem. When I try to boot from USB, it just hangs there and the Windows7 setup never appears. Another thing to note that this laptop is a dell 1520 which is powerful enough for the 64-bit, though currently I think it is on 32-bit vista.

Swapping A Hard Drive
I am writing this on a new build PC with Win 7 RC installed. The problem benig I installed a small spare HD, I have got so involved in learning Win 7 and liking what I'm seeing that I got it set up great but the HD is not the one I want to use. My other internal HD of an other PC is much larger and the one I wish to use. I don't know how/the procedure in transferring my settings files, folders from the small to the larger HD. I have every single folder, file, emails and so on backed up on an external HD, so once larger internal HD is up and running I could restore/transfer my files/folders/e-mails/favorites that way but what about settings. The larger HD as yet does not have Win 7 RC installed and this will have to be done first. I do not wish to partion the larger HD yet. There are possible several effective ways to transfer everything, settings and so on from the small to the large but need the procedure explained, simple works best with me. Or would it simply be best to install Win 7 on big HD and then transfer/restore, files, folders and so from the external back up HD.

Driver For Hard Drive
I am presently using Windows 7 RC, although everything is working fine I still have this problem message appearing. The message states that my maindrive ( I use two drives) is missing the driver? It is a Western Digital WDC160 Sata 2, otherwise the only problem I have is that it does not recognize my HP scanner drivers. And HP stopped making drivers after XP.

Installing On Another Hard Drive?
Alright, so after a few days of hardware checking I've determined that the cause of my computer being as messed up as it is is the hard drive. Seagate's own SeaTools says it failed the drive tests, and I'm gonna have to call them later and get an RMA on it. Well, how would I go about installing Windows 7 on my replacement hard drive? I've installed and activated it a few times on this same drive, but I think that's because the activation system detects the exact same hardware, therefore it lets me keep activating it. If I put in a different hard drive, though, won't it see it as a different computer and deny me the chance to activate it? (Same goes with my OEM Student version of Office 2007) So what would you guys suggest? Can I de-activate it from one computer then activate it on another? or what?

New Hard Drive Slower
I would first like to start off by saying that I do love Windows 7, but I seem to be having some issues with my new internal HDD for my computer. I'll start by giving specs on my computer to give everyone an idea what I'm dealing with here. Prior to installing the WD Black, my computer was running a Samsung SP2014N (7200rpm, 200GB, 8MB cache, IDE). While using Windows 7, this HD was very fast at accessing information, but transfer rates seemed low (in my opinion), and I needed much more space since my External HD was crashing. After careful consideration, I purchased the new WD Black. Brought it home, connected the new HD, installed Windows 7, updating all drivers and even updating the BIOS as of yesterday. This new HDD seems slower than my old one, and I cannot seem to find a way to speed it up. In BIOS, I have to run the new HDD through IDE settings for it accept it, but the primary and secondary IDE controllers are still showing with nothing running in their place. This also transfers over to Device Manager, where the new HDD shows up under the IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers as "ATA Channel 1", with DMA checked under advanced settings. All Drivers have been updated prior to checking in here. I know I am not getting anywhere near the 3GB/s transfer rates that WD claims this drive will perform up to. If anyone out there has any suggestions at all, I would love to hear from you. I'm just running out of ideas..

Problem With Old Hard Drive
when I installed windows 7 RC 7100 I bought a new hard drive and put my XP home one in the sata 2 slot thinking I would have access to my DATA. I was wrong for Documents and Settings, I can't access them, I can access everything else, Program Files, games, completed torrents that aren't in My Documents, but all my other stuff, like My Received Files or My Pictures, are locked, it won't allow me to copy paste on my Windows 7 OS hard drive. any idea how I can get the rights to access it? I won't be able to boot with the old hard drive, because I installed windows 7 with my new motherboard.
