Windows 7 Won't Detect USB Hard Drive

Dec 18, 2011

I have tried to use this IOMAX USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter Kit with Power: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics to connect an old 250 gb Samsung sata hard drive to my PC.Windows won't recognise it as a hard drive/partition - the USB adapter device is recognised, and via Devices & Printers, it shows the drive, but not as a USB External Drive, (see image) so I cannot access it.

BIOS Won't Detect IDE Hard Drive

Dec 30, 2011

On my old secondary computer my setup was
Motherboard: Chaintech VNF2-350
Master 0: HDS722516VLAT80 with Windows installation
Slave 0: WD800BB-53CCB0

But then I started getting Machine Check Exceptions and my motherboard ultimately perished. So I replaced that with a Foxconn K8S755A-6ELRS. But this new motherboard won't detect the hard drive.

It will hang at the part that says "Detecting IDE drives", sometimes it will give up and display "0" where the drive is supposed to be, other times it will hang until you unplug the cable.

If it's on the same channel as the Hitachi drive with XP on it, the BIOS recognizes the other drive, but fails to boot from it. If they are on different channels, it boots the XP drive but will see no hint of the drive on the other channel., even in Disk Management or Device Manager.

I also tried connecting it to my other computer's Intel DP35DP mobo, and it was able to detect/read/write and all that, though it does have a few bad sectors.

Windows 7 Doesn't Detect Hard Drive

Feb 17, 2011

Here's my hard drive: Seagate Constellation ES ST3500514NS

I haven't been able to get Windows 7 installation to detect this drive for about two months now. I'm running on a Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H mobo, revision 2.1.

I recently found a list of drivers for my motherboard on Gigabyte. I also found some downloads for my hard drive.

Oh, and I can use this drive if I'm running Windows 7 on a different hard drive, but I just can't install Windows 7 on it.

Win 7 Unable To Detect SATA Hard Drive

Dec 20, 2009

I recently embarked on the journey of building my first custom PC. Everything was going well, until I hit a speed bump of installing Windows 7 64 bit. So like usual I boot from the CD drive, and stick Windows 7 in. When it gets to the point where I'm going to install, it is unable to find my SATA drive to install Windows 7 on.

It then asks me to "locate drivers." So it gives me an option to browse, and when it does so I put in the disk that came with my mobo, but it's unable to find any drivers. I tried downloading drivers from my motherboard's web site, sticking them on an external HD, and locating them from there, but that still didn't work.

I checked in my BIOS, and my SATA type is under Native IDE. I tried switching it to AHCI, and my HD was no longer detected in the BIOS, switched back to Native IDE and it found it again. Also, Onchip IDE Channel is set to Disabled, and Onchip SATA Control is set to Enabled, does this matter any?

I was wondering, though, is it possible that if I set the SATA type to AHCI, move the SATA cables into ports so that the drive is recognized by my BIOS, use the AHCI drivers I downloaded, Windows 7 will detect it?

Computer Doesn't Detect Hard Drive After A BSOD

May 10, 2012

i've been having some really weird freezes, sometimes its just the windows but multimedia keyboard keys / mouse still work, other times it completely freezes (cant even move the mouse.).Usually if i wait a little bit the computer goes back to normal by itself, other times i get BSOD.Im pretty sure its hardware related because i've tried formatting and got a bsod right after installing windows, i suspect the hard drive because when the computer freezes all HDD activity stops, when the computer manages to recover the hard drive activity comes back exactly at the same time the system unfreezes, sometimes if i run chkdsk there are lots and lots of errors, windows fixes them but they come back sooner or later, also, sometimes the computer doesn't detect the hard drive after a BSOD, turning the computer off and then on always "fixes" that tho.

The only reason im not 100% sure its the HDD its because all HDD utilities i've tried (incluiding western digital diagnostics software) say the disk is fine, can SMART be wrong I've also ran memtest and no errors (just one pass tho)Things seem to have gotten worse when i changed the graphic card, however i remember getting these freezes with the old one, just not as serious, prolly just a coincidence.I remember getting 3 kinds of BSOD errors: driver_power_state_failure, pagefault_in_nonpaged_area and kernel_data_inpage_error.A week ago i turned my pc on and windows was broken, startup repair thing would show up and try to repair but failed no matter how many times i tried, this never happened to me before so it must be related.

Windows 7 Setup Doesn't Detect Hard Drive

Jan 4, 2012

So my trusty old 40 GB Maxtor HDD finally died, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a 250 GB Western Digital Caviar SE 16 (SATA II). Windows will boot off of the DVD, load the setup, ask me if I want to perform an install or a repair, and then it asks if I want to upgrade or do a "custom" setup. I choose custom since it's a clean drive, but then it shows me a blank list of drives with the option to load a driver. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2H, so I went to Gigabyte's website and downloaded the drivers and put them on a USB thumb drive. I spent hours trying to load different drivers to no avail. I tried the CD that came with the motherboard; no dice. I tried 32 and 64 bit installations; neither worked.

But you know what did work? My 180-day trial copy of Windows Server 2003. It detected that hard drive like Western Digital made it just for 2003.

Fresh Windows 7 Install Will Not Detect New Seagate Hard Drive

Feb 20, 2012

Me and my fiance just finished putting together her first real gaming computer and we wanted to use a Patriot 64g SSD to put win 7 on and use a 1TB Seagate drive for all the rest of the storage. The installation of Win 7 onto the SSD went nice and smooth but when we get into windows it is not detecting the 1TB HD at all. Funny thing is that when I go in to the SSD properties, I can see the Seagate under the sharing options. The only info I have found is how to clone off an existing hard drive with Win 7 on it not how to do a fresh install on 2 new drives.

Can't See BIOS After Pressing F8 Or Boot Into Safe Mode

Jul 14, 2012

I recently got hit by a virus on my new pc. PC's that I have owned in the past I would boot into safe mode and fix. However, when I restart to hit f8, I do not see the BIOS. I know the computer brings it up b/c it doesn't boot into Windows 7. So I booted into Windows 7 normal, went to msconfig and told it to boot safely. I got no display at all now after rebooting. I can't get back into Windows 7 nor see the BIOS, or Safe Mode. I have tried more than one monitor. I do have dual graphics cards, so I do not know if that is causing the conflict or not.

Black Screen After Boot Loader, Pressing F8 Doesn't Do Anything

Jul 25, 2012

I have a Windows 7 Pro x64 which has been running for a many months without any issues.Three days ago I restarted the machine and Windows 7 didn't start anymore. I have spent a lot of time investigating it and could not find anything wrong with the boot loader or the file system where the OS is.So the boot loader works, I have also replaced it just in case but nothing changed. I can go into the boot loader menu and chose the Windows 7 entry but then the black screen which says "Starting Windows" comes and nothing else happens.Note that the computer doesn't hang, it simply gets stuck at some point and doesn't do anything else. The HDD LED stays on from this point forward and that is it, if I press ctrl+alt+del it restarts and if it were completely frozen it wouldn't.

This Windows 7 runs on a pair of drives in RADI1 so it cannot be a problem with the drives. I have run checks just to be sure and couldn't find anything, no file system issues or bad blocks. The raid controller is not reporting any issues with the drives.I have booted with the windows install cd and tried to repair it many times but the auto repair says it could not repair it, other times it tells me that no issue was found. The boot manager is working fine, I have replaced it just in case using bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot and also bootsect /nt60 all.I have checked for corrupt files with sfc and no files were corrupt, at least no critical system files.I have manually replaced the winload.exe file but this didn't help either. The problem seems to be at the stage where the boot manager passes control to winload.exe.

Can't Boot From Hard-drive

May 7, 2011

After I got sick of some programs crashing, I decided to install windows xp. i shrinked 1 partition and created a new partition called XP mistakenly under drive A. I shutdown and put in xp disc, selected the newly created partition and chose install there and said not to format as it did when i partitioned. It copied the files and reboted, I took out the disk. The fist screen of my bios now says flopy disks fail (40) or something like that. When I normally go to select an OS, it says hard disk could not be read. I put in my win 7 upgrade disk to try to restore, but there is no restore on an upgrade disk. When in the windows 7 install screen(looking for restore) I deleted the newly created partition. How can I get the computer to boot from hard disk again?

Windows 7 Won't Boot On New Hard Drive

Jan 8, 2013

My Old HDD crashed, it had windows 7 on a D: logical drive with an extended partition (Not sure why/how I ended up with a D: logical drive and an extended partition, it probably happened when I upgraded my windows xp to windows 7 32 bit OR when I upgraded my windows7 from 32 bit to 64 bit, anyways.....). My old HDD also had two other primary partitions which probably had some system files etc,. I do not have a backup of these two primary partitions, however, I do have a paragon backup of my logical drive D: extended partition alongwith a backup of first track (not sure what that means). My old drive is bad. I got me a new HDD, created a new NTFS primary partition with a drive letter C:. I then restoed the paragon backup of my windows D: drive on to this new primary C: partition. Now, I am not able to boot windows 7. Seems like I need to make this new partition bootable and/or make it a system partition. Not sure how to do this. I dont want to install windows 7 from scratch and then load all the software programs.

Can't Boot New Hard Drive Since Wiping Old One?

Aug 27, 2011

and i signed up because Microsoft support rips you off (says they don't know the answer, so they charge you to open a case, which is 1 fee until solved, then 10 seconds later they're like "okay, so this is what you do"). Recently because my computer was getting extremely slow, i bought a new 2 TB 7200 RPM seagate hard drive. I installed it, put windows on it, and for some time it was booting fine, but then i decided i was satisfied and ready to wipe the old OS hard drive to reclaim the space on it, so i did so, then when i rebooted the computer i got an error saying something like "unable to find system files, reboot and select correct device". I then decided i'd try to reinstall or repair windows, but i get this error code when it tries to expand files: 0x80070017. Now when trying to boot from any of my 3 hard drives it says "bootmgr missing" I'm quite sure there were no viruses on the machine, though it had been a couple days since i last scanned.

Hard Drive Wont Boot

Jun 29, 2012

First my motherboard is a gigabyte x58a-ud3r. It has a i7-930 in it, not over clocked at the stock settings. It has 6gb of ram (right now, it should have 12 but I have taken out 3 sticks cause I thought that might have been the issue) Recently my hard drive which was a hitachi deskstar crashed on me, it wont boot, even a clean format makes it keep restarting or giving me the bootmgr missing error which even after i use the windows disc to do repair it still is in a restart loop. I put in my windows 7 install dvd and it formatted the drive and installed windows 7 just fine. Then I was doing updates and it did it, it was like 66 updates or something as far as I remember and it had to restart. Right here when it restarted is when the trouble began. It now is just restarting non stop, goign to the verfying dmi data and restarting. I cant get it to boot in safe mode, not while using the windows 7 install dvd.

Dual Boot With New Hard Drive

Oct 23, 2009

I currently have a system running XP with two IDE hard drives and 3 partitions.

I have taken Windows 7 as a chance to get myself some much needed extra space! and purchased a new 1tb SATA drive.

I really dont want to lose the exisitng data I have so my original plan was to take my main IDE harddrive with most of my data stick it in an external USB carrier and then start fresh in the system with the 1tb and Windows 7.

What would be cooler would be if I could add the 1tb to the exisiting system and install Windows 7 on that (ideally with that as C and either then have much quicker access to transfer data to the new drive or even dual boot with XP at first incase I have any issues with Windows 7. Can anyone advice me on how easy/risky this is? And what they would suggest to someone trying to maximise the uptime of their PC?

Boot Problem With Second Hard Drive

Dec 3, 2009

I tried bootrec and the built in startup repair, neither worked. I ended up having to install windows 7 again on my old drive. Now when the OS choice pops up, my original 7 install is considered "recovered". How do I make it so I can format my extra drive and still boot?

I can't just wipe them both and start over because I would lose all my music, documents, etc.

Faster Way To Boot From Hard Drive

May 19, 2011

So I just purchased a SSD and put Win 7 on it. All is fine and dandy, but I still like to visit my Vista instance on the old hard drive. It appears that the only way to switch between which hard drive & OS to boot to is to go into the BIOS, rearrange the boot sequence, and then reboot. This is rather clumsy and time consuming IMO. Is there a faster way to choose which hard drive to boot from? I've looked into "dual booting" which will prompt the user with a simple menu to choose which OS to boot into. This is exactly what I want. The problem is that it appears this is only available when both OS's are on one hard drive, which is not my situation.
