The drive was safely removed and connected to another computer that was running Windows XP Pro 2002 SP3. I was told that the drive was not recognized in XP and that it was disconnected (I cannot say for sure "Safely") and returned to the Windows 7 computer. Once the drive came up I get the following:

I know every drive fails eventually and I'm not sure how old this drive is. Any utilities to use to try and repair the file structure. I have only tried rebooting the Windows 7 computer and that did not change anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got pop up in utorrent says a directory is corrupt, I start to run chkdsk on that drive. In this case in have drive letter E. I click on computer, then go to the drive, right click, properties, tools, check now. It says the drive is need to to forced to dismount. I click on ok. then in computers, the drive just show the letter, not size or disk meter. In the open windows on task bar, I did not see scan disk running, or maybe I accidentally closed because I was switching between several programs.

I have few questions on Windows 7 Upgrade. Currently I'm using windows vista home premium 64 bit and I bought an windows 7 home premium 64 bit upgrade disk.
first thing is I want to format my previous operating system and all the data in my laptop and install windows 7 in it using the Upgrade disk.
second thing is I don't have my vista installation disk with, my laptop was pre-installed with vista so in future if I want to switch can I get back VISTA using system restore.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is kinda long and I've fixed it, but could use your input. So after waking up, my parents informed me that the computer was shutting down randomly. I turned it on and "a disk error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart " appeared. It's a Sata hard drive so I checked the cables to make sure they were plugged in correctly and they were, and then I tried connecting it to another computer with that computers cables and that didn't work either. My parents not wanting to buy one online, decided to just go to bestbuy and buy one there, since we already had the Windows 7 Disk at home. I formatted it, partitioned it, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it and everything worked. I decided to connect the Hard drive that didn't work while the computer was still on, and it immediately started downloading the drivers it needed and up popped all the hard drive. I'm going to start transferring all the important things like music,videos and games, and after, all I can see are the following 3 things; after getting all the data we want off it, should I reinstall windows to see if my other computer will recognize it (Even though it couldn't before), format it and just use it as extra data (though since it already couldn't boot up, the ability to keep data on it may fail in a couple of days/weeks) or just put it away and not use it at all.

However, I soon discovered that if I boot from the Windows 7 cd and do not boot from it (By ignoring the "Press a key to boot from CD or DVD..." Windows 7 boots up fine.

I am using windows 7 64 bit on my hp pavillion g6 laptop (g6 - 1118tx model) and the warranty is expired . Well I ve got 2 problems , please read the whole problem and provide some solution. Around a week back my Laptop got struck(edit - windows 7 os got struck .. hangs .. watever) so i have restarted it , but when i did it showed some error message "windows was unable to start your system" something like that .. I thought i need to buy a new hard again but i saw install option in ubuntu live cd and ubuntu got installed and in the processing of installing I FORMATTED 2 drives as EXT PARTITIONS (do remember this point).. After that I installed windows 7 on another drive (not C drive) which worked but now the system is very very very slow , you cant imagine how slow it is , takes 30 mins to copy 500 mb file, 5 mins to open my computer.. So now my problem is ... Should I replace my hard disk ??, because when i asked friend of mine in service center he said its better to replace, because even though its working now he said it may crash again in future and who knows the whole data might be lost If I dont want to replace, can you guys provide any solution to speed up my system ?? Sata Port 0&1 - Gigaraid 2x 750G Raid 0 - Scsii disk Boot.
Sata ports 2&3, 4&5, 6, - 5x 500G 2TB dynamic GPT Raid 5
Sata Port 7 -1x 750G Roms & software disk.
Rocket Raid Scsii 0_1, 5x1TB in raid 5.
Scsii 0_0, 1x500G JBOD.
Problem is here.
I have been trying to get this system ready to do extensive HD video editing and multimedia work so thumbnails are critical to sorting out 1000's of clips. Vista just doesnt show thumbnails. I have been waiting years for Windows 7.
This system is fast. Boot drive reads at over 160MB/s sec. The 2 Raid 5 arrays can copy to each other at 250MB/s plus (for multi GB files). Interesting HDTach 3.0.1 only shows 160MB's for the Highpoint array.
They will have to fix their software..
In the last few weeks the system had become very flakey - Windows 7 x64 & vista x64 system -video thumbnail display & codec errors etc, windows explorer hangs, system corruption, bad software & codecs.
The boot manager from the latest (Paragon i think) partition manager for windows 7 got stuck on resize partition and it doesnt time out. I want my pc to be always on for remote access..
Anyway the system finally crashed. I lost one of the Raid0 boot disk array IDs when I tried to delete the boot manager. One disk offline and array gone. 60 hours, 400G of newly imported video from 8mm tapes..
So I decided on clean install just windows 7 after I recovered the data on the raid array.
To that end I removed all the other disks, took a single clean disk and installed vista on it.
Then I went to Bios and deleted the GigaRaid array and recreated it with the original 2 disks.
Changed the boot order in Bios to the first Sata.
Back into windows, initialise the GigaRaid array in windows disk management -Do not partition or format it. Load GetBackDataNTFS and
scan and copy all of the data back to the spare space on the new boot disk.
When I was totally happy I had everything back I loaded Windows Disk management and partitioned the GigaRaid into 250G and 1200G. Formatted the only the 1200G and copied on all of the drivers..
I then shutdown and removed the Vista hard disk and restarted with the Windows 7 DVD. Loaded the Gigaraid drivers and proceded to install Windows 7.
On first reboot, error 80xxxx .
Back to setup and disk management. Delete the new 250G partition and let Install do its stuff. So it creates a 100MB "system" as the first partition then 260G for the C drive and installs itself.
Whoo hoooo! it works.
I shutdown and add the GPT array and the single Roms drive.
Into Bios to set the boot to the Scsii Gigaraid & restart and the dynamic array and Roms disk is there.
Shutdown and install the RocketRaid Card with its 5 disks attached.
Back to bios to set Boot to Scsii Gigaraid.
It always puts Sata 0 first.
Or Scsii 0_1 (the RocketRaid).
Boot back into windows and everything is where it should be.
Clean and fast too. Install all of the software I need.
Now I have a nice system. Time to copy the video I recovered onto the Raid5 array.
So I plug the sata cable into the disk and go into the Highpoint management to scan the disk. Come up ok and is visible in windows.
I copy the data over to the raid.
The I decide to see it the computer will reboot back into windows unattended.. Nope! Screen fills with rubbish that looks like Linux. Says changing boot disk, then stops.
I go back into Bios and reset the boot disk back to Scsii 1_0 (GigaRaid)
Reboot and press F12 for the boot menu. Select the last item - GigaRaid.
Boots back into that Linux looking system (says debian).
I disconnect RocketRaid disk 6, Scsii 0_1 and back to bios and set to Scscii 1_0, Gigaraid, reboot back into windows..
Plug the Rocketraid Scsii 1_0 and reboot - back into Linux?
Question is..
1 What is the purpose of the 100MB that windows installed onto the boot disk.
2 how do i find the boot manager that screws the system when I connect a new drive (including USB key).
3 How do I force the boot to the correct disk array regardless of which drives are installed or not.
4. Is there a boot "something" I can install on every disk to point to Scsii Gigaraid
The drive had windows xp on it from another build so i just used it to test. It booted xp fine. It only showed 3gb of ram but i think that was due to it being 1066 and needing me to change bios ram settings. So i took my full version of windows 7 professional that i have used to install on my laptop too and tried to install. I formatted the drive completely and chose to install. It goes through the paces installs.
Then when it is supposed to boot from the hard disk the first time it give me a brief blue screen PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA so i research it and see it can be linked to hard disk or ram. So obviously its not the disk its been running xp fine and so has the ram. But just in case i switched out the ram with 1gb of old ddr2 800 i had from another build. Same error. I then tried my new ocz ram with a single chip thinking its a dual channel problem. Same error. So then i reburn the microsoft professional image to a new dvd r go through the process again and reformat and still the same error. I have tested all i know to test. Any other ideas?

I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet. I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

View 1 Replies View RelatedComputer is a Sony Vaio VGC-RC110G (not sure about motherboard). About 3 weeks ago computer starts refusing to boot giving errors that make me think the hard drive is bad. Computer will still occasionally boot after 5-10 tries. I bought a new hard drive and tried to create an image of the old drive onto the new using Clonezilla, the process gave a few errors. The computer flatly refused to boot from the new drive (gave disk read errors). However, when I could boot using the old drive, I could get in and explore the image of the new drive and the image copy process seemed to have worked okay.
As part of the disk image copy process, my new drive had 2 partitions and about 900 megs of free space. The two partitions were the main windows partition from the old drive and the recovery partition. I combined all partitions and formatted the new drive (using Gparted) because I thought that the disk image copy probably just recreated errors in the old drive onto the new. After the format, my computer then consistently refused to boot from either drive. (in the past I could boot to the old drive after a couple of tries). The error was usually "a disk read error occurred' or "BOOTMGR is missing."
Attempts to install windows using windows install DVD failed because computer couldn't write to the new hard drive. Both hard drives would usually appear in bios when I entered into it (I know at least one time where neither appeared in the bios), although sometimes computer would fail allow me to edit bios altogether. I attached the new hard drive to a different computer and installed a clean version of windows 7 Ultimate x86 to the new drive. The different computer boots just fine from the new hard drive. But when I move the new hard drive to back to the old computer I consistently now get "a disk read error occurred" error.
I don't believe it is a SATA cable issue because power to drive seems to be fine and I had to use the SATA cable from the old computer when hooking the drive up to the different and it worked fine. Also, Gparted recognizes the drive just fine and has no problems formatting partitions etc., so there is communication happening through the SATA cable and the power cable is powering adequately.TL;DR summary: New hard drive works fine with new computer, but old computer (when connected to same new hard drive) gives me a "disk read error occurred." Based on the evidence, I don't think it's a faulty drive issue. I'm also skeptical that it's a cable issue, but haven't 100% ruled out this possibility. What should I do next in terms of identifying the problem? I've currently exhausted my (admittedly limited) hardware troubleshooting .expertise.
