Configuring Windows 7 Using HP Recovery Manager?

Dec 28, 2011

Due to some problems I was having with updating windows, I decided to recover my HP computer to its factory condition using HP's Recovery Manager.I don't have a recovery disk, so I chose to recover from the recovery partition on the hard drive. I chose to not do a backup and the recovering process went fine. After it was done, I was asked to restart my pc and once it restarted, I was at a black screen which said something along the lines of "setting up devices". After a couple of minutes, a small window showed up with the fallowing message:"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware." This window shows up when the black screen says "Setting up devices". I press ok, then the black screen says "setup will continue once your computer is restarted". The pc is restarted automatically and this window shows up again. At first, I had unplugged an external USB hard drive and an external wifi antenna, leaving my monitor, mouse, and keyboard plugged. But, after doing some research, I found that some hardware installed inside the pc might also be causing the problem. So, I removed the wireless card, disconnected the DVD drive, and disconnected the cable from the USB and analog ports of the front panel. The only things that were connected (as far as I saw), were the fans, motherboard, power button, and the only hard drive. I went back into the recovery manager and did the recovery again, once it was done and the pc restarted, I was brought back to the same message.

Windows 7 Task Manager Doesn't Show Up?

Jul 12, 2012

I have a small problem with my Windows 7. Here's what happened:Yesterday, my pc was running fine. I turned it on at 10am and it was running well. My sister ordered a new router so I set it up for her (AirPort Extreme). I installed the utility for it, was a simple setup for me. After that, I connect to it wirelessly and I see that windows update has a few security updates. They install as I turn off the pc. I then turn it back on a few hrs later and notice that when it reaches the login screen, it takes a few secs for it to load. This is unusual being that the days before it was always ready to receive input. So I login, get the welcome screen, and my desktop screen. Taskbar loads as usual, however I can't get anything to show up when I click on it. I think at first that its Comodo (is in training mode) so I close it out. Still nothing. I then press ctrl+alt+delete. Nothing. I then press it rapidly to see what happens. After a few mins, my screen turns black. A message then shows up that ctrl+alt+delete has been pressed but due to something that it won't show up. Had to press either the power button or esc to leave the screen. Safe mode works. I do a system restore back to when the windows update and to the installation of the router. I scanned and haven't found anything yet. Today, my pc looks like its running fine but its still taking a few secs on the login screen and the desktop still idles. I'm going to contact HP to see what they can do but I wanted a second opinion.

Here's my specs (looks like this):

HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 Quad Edition
Windows 7 Home Premuim 64-bit
Intel core i7-3820QM CPU @ 2.70GHz
8GB RAM
1TB hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M

Using Recovery Manager To Reset Laptop - Image Failed To Copy Across

Nov 3, 2012

I was using recovery manager to reset my laptop (ACER 5470G) back to factory settings. The image failed to copy across. I then got Boot Mgr is Missing - I have tried, everything it states on the internet and even bought some software WIN RE to carry out the recovery but nothing works. I have tried to reinstall W7 ISO and W7 full installation software but it all has failed. The message i get with the full install disc and iso is that the system i have to select a drive PQ, F and C, the only option I have is C, but when I try it states it can't do it. I tried Ubuntu and it did work, so I presume the HDD is ok. I did have Zone Alarm Data-lock installed on it and I don't know if that is preventing the re-install. I tried to install XP, but that just dies out.

Windows 7 Boot Manager Default Entry Doesn't Work

May 30, 2012

When I start up Windows, I have two options, "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)", and only the second one works. This is annoying because it defaults to the first entry. Some background info: I added a second hard drive to my laptop, and I used an Ubuntu install disc to move Windows 7 to the second hard drive and install Ubuntu to the first (larger) hard drive. When I start up my computer, the Grub boot loader gives me an option between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7.When I first tried to boot into Windows, it had problems (caused by finding itself on a new drive I assume) and attempted to do startup repair which didn't change anything. It had detected a Windows 7 installed on drive "E", attempted repair, but on reboot I got to the same place. Next I used the Windows 7 Repair disc that I had burned earlier, which appeared to do the exact same process of attempting startup repair, however this time when I rebooted I got the option between "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)". The first option causes it to do what it did before, and the second option gets me into Windows 7 fine. Windows still sees its hard drive as "C" which is good. While looking for solutions to this, I found the bcdedit utility. I attempted to rename "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)" to just "Windows 7 Home Premium" to test whether it changed anything, but when I boot up I still get "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)". I don't even know where the "Windows 7" entry comes from.

Here's the output of `bcdedit /v`:

Code: Windows Boot Manager

It just doesn't appear! I've uninstalled ATI Catalyst Install Manager, ran Driver Sweeper in safe mode and then reinstalled but still the CCC does not appear in the list. I've also checked the Windows/Assesmbly key problem too. It's the same problem as this post: Catalyst Control Center missing/Wont install?I have a Radeon 4000 series card.

Format Harddrive With Pre-installed O/S And No Recovery Disc

Apr 12, 2012

I bought a HP Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. I got rid of any bloatware and as I'm typing this, Macrium is imaging my C drive to a network drive. Now my question is, would I be able to completely format the computer, set up my own partitions and install Windows on one of them? Preferably a fresh and clean version but I wouldn't mind the bloatware one either. Things to consider, I don't have a disk-drive so it'd have to be done with a thumbdrive; I have not been able to find the actual O/S product key, if someone could tell me where to locate it.

Windows 7 Toshiba A505 Windows Boot Manager And Recovery Media Failed

Feb 20, 2012

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S69803; serial number Y9340538Q, with Windows 7, 500Gb HDD at 5400rpm and 4Gb RAM... I think that's all correct.Anyway, long story short, I got a b!tch of a virus, which apparantly was doing all sorts of nasty things to the explorer.exe file in particular. So I backed up all my important stuff: files, Uni work, writings, music and photos etc onto an external hard-drive and went about restoring the laptop to out-of-box factory settings by making the Windows 7 Recovery Media Discs. But when I try to use the discs I get told after about 30 minutes The Toshiba Recovery Wizard "Can't read from the source file or disk: PREINST5.SW5" with options to: Try Again (The same thing happens), or Skip (Same message again), or Cancel (in which case I'm back where I started). After the Recovery Wizard failed I chose the option to erase the hard-drive; it then appeared that when I turn on the laptop as normal I was told <Error>: F3-F200-0002 and the Recovery Media Disks still refuse to work. Now, if I turn on the laptop as normal a message telling me to insert the installation disc, choose language and click "repair your computer". So I put in the recovery disc and get the same message.

Toshiba can't help as my A505 is an American model in Britain and out of warranty anyway. Europe Toshiba HQ don't supply the recovery media for the A505 and the American based Toshiba aren't allowed to send the Recovery Media to Europe; so apparantly I get no help from them. And Microsoft can't help me because my laptop was purchased with everything pre-installed so the codes associated with my Windows and Office are comletely irrelevent.I have been told that I need to purchase a compeltely new hard-drive and purchase Windows 7 brand new to get my laptop back up and running. Purchasing a new OS isn't too much of an issue because I can just get XP for a tenner, validate it with Microsoft and then get a student upgrade onto W7-Ult for 60. So 70 in total, I'm fine with that. But do I need a new hard-drive too? Or can I rescue everything I already had?

Disc ASUS Recovery Error 1029, Cannot Boot Into That Recovery Partition

Jun 23, 2012

I've gotten to the point where I need to just reinstall windows completely on my Asus G74SX (too many problems, I want to start fresh.). I encounter an error 1029 with Asus's recovery disks that I made when I had windows working: it says it is recovering all the way to 100% then doesnt work. I am in the process of trying it again so I'll see if it actually managed to wipe my hard drive like it said it was doing, and maybe if it did actually work and reinstall windows. However, I'd like to be able to get into the recovery partition because I would prefer restoring it with Asus as they recommend me to. However, when I hit F9, their target to get there, it doesn't do anything and just reloads the boot screen, with the Asus logo on it. I don't have an actual Wndows recovery CD so that's not an option, and at this point since my hard drive has likely been wiped by these recovery DVDs, I don't think going into Ubuntu and fixing the MBR will do me much good anymore. It may be worth noting that before I last restarted, I marked the Windows partition as active because of a tutorial here, making it so that recovery partition isn't active anymore.

XP Recovery Console Versus Vista/7's Recovery Console?

Nov 19, 2011

It seems to me that XP's recovery console is somewhat better than the one that comes with Vista or 7, unless someone can point me in the right direction for finding further documentation on this topic.

The main difference is the lack of ability to tinker with services (LISTSVC / ENABLE / DISABLE commands). A missed opportunity is the lack of registry tweaking, considering that REGEDIT can be run, but I think it only allows you to look at the registry for the recovery console rather than the main Windows installation, which doesn't help much (though I haven't tried to import/mount the registry file from the main Windows installation).

Device Status - No Driver Installed But Driver IS Installed

Sep 19, 2012

Every now and then my WiFi stops working, and if I go to dev mgr, the General tab tells me that "No drivers are installed for this device" for device status. On the other tabs, however, I have all the details on the installed driver, and if I ask Windows to update the driver, it tells me that the best driver is already installed. The problem is solved by rebooting, but I find that annoying. I'd like to figure out WHY it does that. I've saved earlier versions of that particular driver from over the last three years, and the problem occurs with all of the drivers. This is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system. The driver is an Intel driver; the one installed at this moment (it just happened again, and I have not rebooted, since I had a powerline enet outlet handy), and the version of the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN is 14.3.1. I have other versions of that driver saved, from 13.2.1.5 to 15.1.1_Ds64. I had reverted to the 14.3.1 because the more recent versions seemed to be worse about the driver disabling itself or whatever it is doing.Coincidentally with this, the event viewer shows that mmc.exe was terminated because it was hanging. I had just run sfc yesterday, and there are no corrupt files that Windows cannot fix, and there weren't even any corrupt files that it DID fix.
