I have partitioned my main hdd into 2, one is for system install only and the other has programs / game installations. I want to put a fresh install on my system partition but wonder how difficult it will be to use the programs from the other partition, eg. Will i have any registry problems if i try to run the programs straight away? Some of these programs are hefty in size...

After install my sytem wont boot and it says File: ntoskrnl.exeStatus: 0xc0000428Info: Windoes cannot verify the digital signature for this file.My BIOS is the latest for my Gigabyte G31M-ES2C and I formatted the complete hard drive before install using GParted. I have cleared my CMOS memory and I tried reinstalling and repairing the system too. I checked my TwinMos 2GB RAM for errors and it is fine too. I have two hard drives both SATA WDC caviar blue 250gb (master) and 160gb(slave).

Last Saturday, I tried to install the Windows 7 Professional ( Downloaded from MSDN). When tried to boot from DVD it said " Windows Cannot Boot From this drive. CODE- 5".
I tried from my another DVD drive. Same Error.
Changed all possible jumper settings for HDD and DVD-RW's ( All IDE) as Pri- master/Slave, Sec Master/Slave. Nothing Worked.
Also I tried with another copy of Win 7 Home Premium came with my Dell Laptop (Worked fine for fresh installation in my laptop). Still same Error.
But I'm able to install both Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional in the same system, starting installation from XP (Not Booting from DVD).
Now I installed Windows 7 Pro as I said and after that I deleted Windows.old folder. All running fine.
With some curiosity, I tried to boot again from DVD drive with Windows 7 Dvd, same Error, even after installing Windows 7.
Till now I don't Know how to perform a clean installation of Windows 7 in my system.
I have had trouble with Windows 7 media centre and corrupt audio drivers and followed the tutorial install from my manufacturers supplied OEM disc. However, I seem to have installed the fresh install in a recovery partition and so now have 2 installs of windows 7 and am given the option of which one to use on boot up. The audio problems are not there in the second install but it is obviously in the wrong part of the drive as I now get a warning message saying that my recovery drive E is full. How do I uninstall the newly installed version from this drive and then I can go back to the original version and have another go of getting this to work properly. When I tried the install I was not permitted to install into the C Drive (OS) but I presume that this is where it should have gone.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my tower that I built and I'm wondering if starting with a fresh OS installation will do the trick. My current setup is one hard drive for nothing but the OS and programs and multiple other drives to save files to. My issue is that I use the Windows Backup utility to backup the drives that contain important information. If I were to install a fresh copy of the OS, I imagine that the system wouldn't realize that I've performed a backup on the other drives before and would want to do a complete backup all over again rather than being able to do an incremental backup. Is there a way to backup the settings and log files of the Windows Backup utility to move to the new OS? The drive letters and everything else will be the exact same as they are right now. This also makes me curios of how other backup programs behave when the OS has to be reinstalled.

When the computer restarted to finish the setup, it gave me a BSOD for .5 second and then restarted my computer.I have it in my Bios that it's configured where it uses AHCI because for some reason IDE no longer identifies all of my SATA ports and what's plugged in them.I do not have a factory built PC. I am putting together my own computer and am putting in a 1TB HDD and 120GB SSD. Seems as I cannot get a definitive understanding of whether or not I need to format and partition each of these drives. I want to install Windows 7 on the SSD and use the HDD for other programs and data. So do I format and not format each of these drives?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a mobo and gfx card from a friend therefore decided to treat myself and bought a 1TB Hitachi SATA HDD.
As i had a dodgy DVD RW before i installed Windows 7 from my current PATA HD as a custom Installation onto the new Drive after assigning it in Disk manager, formatted and began installation.
All installed fine booted up and asked me which windows to use. selected the new OS and all good, but then, I removed the old PATA drive assuming there would be a Boot block on the new drive allowing boot up with the fresh windows installation and all i got was No boot disc found, please.. bla de bla... so i checked all BIOS settings to make sure all boot sequences were in the right order.. which they were..
I then resorted to put the old PATA HD back in and as soon as i hit the power button there was a spark from the PATA HD i'd just wired back up... Nothing for it to short on as it was laying flat on top of my case. now this wont boot either and im just getting the same message as before whatever i do.
I thought maybe this had blown the IDE slots on the motherboard, so i put my old mobo in and all components, i now get the selection for Windows 7 / Windows 7 (PATA) or Older version of windows. but now when i try and boot the fresh installation of Windows 7 on the SATA drive, it gets to the logo startup screen and restarts.
I have installed Windows 7 on a fresh SATA drive, and it runs extremely slow and jumpy. When I open "My Computer" it does it but it loads it in at least 15 seconds. Most of the windows are really sluggish.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled Windows 7 on a new hard drive and during the installation process, I split the disk into two equal partitions of 500gb. In 'My Computer' I can only see one partition which is the C drive but not the other partition. Looking in Disk Management, the other partition seems to be labelled as 'Unallocated'. How can I allocate this into a usable D drive? I would have expected this to happen automatically during the installation process.

We decided we wanted to partition his one and only hard drive (a 1TB Seagate at 7200rpm or so). We chose a 100GB partition to be the primary drive where the operating system would be installed. Windows also created a 104mb drive for system files or some nonsense. That left a 900 GB partition that would NOT have windows 7 installed on it. Everything installed, PC booted up and when we open windows explorer, the 900 GB drive does not appear. Maybe it has not been formatted?

In order to ensure expediency of the read time of my primary drive, I choose the custom installation. When I did I partioned the drive as 250GB & 700GB. Hoever it also created a 100MB system partition on its own. It never did this in Vista. Is it suppose to do that?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop, Intel core i3 2 GB ram and 320 gb hardrive. I was running windows 7 home bsic edition 32bit on it.Everything was going fine.Then I saw some files in my E: drive with the .dll exension which i think were reated to the microsoft visual C++ enviroment and i deleted them .Lap top was sill running fine. But when I shut it down and turned on again it gave an error on startup that "one or more peripheral devices may have been removed imporperly". So I formaed my C: drive, where windows was installed and re-installed windows 7 basic 32 bit. Bu even a fresh copy of windows was taking 5 to 6 minutes to boot up after the "windows is starting screen" but eventually it did start. when I tried installing my drivers it gave an error that the drivers are not supported by this system.
And I know the drivers are the correct one because I have used them before with this same windows and same laptop. So I again formatted my C: drive and this time installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. But the problem is same it takes 5 to 6 minutes on the "windows is starting screen" and then eventully starts up. And I ran "HDTune" software to see if if my hardrive was okay....and it gave no errors. I even set my bios to "restore default setings" but still no luck.I even tried disk de-fragmenation.....and yeah the drivers wont install even in the windows 7 ultimte 64 bit edition.
I have my HP Laptop which came with Windows Vista as the OS. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 so I bought Windows 7 from my local store.I entered the disc and did boot from CD. It reached to the page where it shows the disk partition. I deleted the partitions and created new one. However, whenever I create the partition, it creates a primary one and gives me error saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.

My boot menu originally consists of Vista (C:) and recovery partition (D:). To install Windows 7, I shrank C and made a separate partition (W:)
Now I have 3 partitions: Vista (C:), New Simple Volume (W:), Recovery (D:).
I installed Windows 7 to the (W:), and it reboots a few times during installation. My situation goes as follows:
Initial installation---Reboot (1 of 3)---bypasses the boot menu and continues installation---Reboot (2 of 3)---boot menu shows up and I can choose to continue the installation of Windows 7, or go to Vista. When I choose Windows 7, it finishes installation---Reboot (3 of 3)---No boot menu is shown. Computer boots into recovery partition.
Why is this happening? Repairing Windows 7 or Vista using recovery partition doesn't help either. It basically just forms a loop by booting to the recovery every time.
Interestingly, the only way I can start Vista again is by reinstalling Windows 7 and wait until the boot menu screen show up after the reboot (2 of 3).
1.I start installing a fresh copy of Win 7.2.At the point of installation which concerns partitions I delete my 2 old ones (had 2 partitions on 1 HDD) and create 2 new ones.3.I continue installation on the smaller partition (just for the OS purpose)
4.All done perfectly with installation.5.When I go to My Computer I am only showing drive C: (the smaller OS partition) and I don't see the second partition at all.

So far I've made a .wim image with the help of this guide and I've made an Autounattend.xml file with thI put the install.wim image in the sources directory on a flash drive and the Autounattend.xml file in the root of the flash drive, and it does exactly what I want it to - all except it's not on a partition. So I move it to a partition and add a boot entry using EasyBCD. It boots fine, but it acts like the Autounattend.xml file isn't even there. So right now I have the choice of hands free installation with media, or manual installation without media. My main question is why the Autounattend.xml file isn't working when I boot the same media from a partition
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter purchasing my new Student Version of Windows 7 Professional I was keen to do a full system format, and start fresh. I no longer had a need for the Dell Recovery Partition which contained Vista (and a decent amount of bloatware), so I removed all partitions from my disk to start with a blank 180GB HDD.
I thought to myself, if I am going to start fresh I might as well do things right and mimic Dell’s setup with a recovery partition of my own. Now to be fair, this isn’t an extremely wild idea as there are plenty of manufacturers and software companies who provide such solutions very simple and easy. Everyone knows that Norton Ghost is fantastic, and Acronis TrueImage is right there with them. Of course you can simply run-up Imagex along with WinPE and sysprep a WIM to re-image your HDD at anytime for a free solution.
However, all these solutions require that you have some sort of recovery media for boot time operation, and the Imagex solution isn’t for the faint of heart. Now I do a lot of travel, and I wanted a solution that didn’t require me to look after a bootable DVD or USB stick, and because I am working with a laptop I didn’t have second disk which I could boot from via BIOS settings. My recovery solution had to be a Primary Partition on my only HDD with boot time options (in case my system is completely rooted.)
This turned out to be quite the challenge, as Windows 7 / Vista no longer support the simple easy boot.ini file that allows you to manually adjust boot time parameters. Instead Windows 7 / Vista have moved onto some fancy form of bootsect / BCD (Boot Configuration Data) which is very difficult to edit manually. Thankfully all of my hard work paid off and I now have a self sufficient system with all the diagnostics and re-imaging tools I could ever need. And thanks to Windows 7’s new Backup and Restore options, I was also able to include a system image which contained all of my settings and applications so that I don’t have to sit through 10 hours of Windows Update again.
What I ended up with is a Primary partition on my HDD that is a full and complete bootable version of the Windows 7 installation media. When I choose this partition at boot time it is exactly as if I have inserted the Windows 7 Install DVD into my disk drive! I can utilise all of the tools in the Windows Recovery Console (which includes the option to restore from a previously created system image), or I can simply re-install Windows 7 from scratch - without affecting my restore partition or boot menu variables!
Having obtained my new 80GB Intel X-25M SSD I will of course be using it as the Windows Partition in my new installation after I receive my release copy on 22nd October.
However, I was wondering on the best way to partition the remainder of my storage to maximise performance, and particularly where I place the swap file, applications and data.
The Maxtor was the original HD that came with the PC and is approaching 4 years old. I obviously don't want to use it for anything that affects performance so the obvious usage is as a backup volume. However, I'm not sure of the wisdom of this given it is the oldest drive!
So, my current plan is as follows:Boot & Windows Partition, including application installation: All 74.5GB of the available SSD Swap File: A seperate 10GB partition of the WD drive Data: The remainder of the WD Drive (Can you get Windows 7 to move the location of the User Folders such as 'Documents', 'Downloads' etc. to a partition other than the system drive? If so how?) Backup: The Maxtor Drive Even though I am getting a full version of Win 7 by virtue of the UK Pre-Order offer, I won't be maintaining my Vista install so no need for a partition for that (good riddance!).
It is important that the swap file is not on the SSD I understand to reduce the number of write cycles and maintain its lifespan.
Does this sound like a good plan to maximise performance? Certainly using the seperate swap file seems to work very well in my RC test installation.
