Windows 7 Won't Load If Remove Optical Drive (error Code 0x490)
Apr 1, 2012I want to remove my optical drive (ASUS dvd/rw) as I never use it, however after I disconnected it Windows wont load. It begins to load and then flashes a blue screen and restarts. If I plug my optical drive back in everything is boots up fine. how I can remove my drive and still be able to boot?
Things I have tried (with no success):
- Disabling and uninstalling the drive from the control panel
- checking boot priority (SSD is my boot drive), optical drive is now completely removed from boot sequence in BIOS (it was 3rd)
In windows repair (following the restart from blue screen) I found this:
Root cause found recent driver installation or uprgrade may be preventing the system from starting Repair Action: system files integrity check and repair Result: Failed Error Code: 0x490

Jun 25, 2012I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal. First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly. After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects.

I have made sure there is enough disk space, updated the drivers & run cCleaner registry check - all to no avail.I have also explored the Microsoft suggestions for the failure to load. Jul 28, 2012I'm in the process of acquiring the parts to build a new PC and was kicking around the idea of how I want to load windows 7, my programs and files and such? I was thinking about buying two different hard drives, one smaller one (250GB or smaller) and one bigger (maybe 2TB). I would use the smaller hard drive to only load the operating system on and the other hard drive would be used to load all my programs, files, emails and such on.I'm thinking that by having the OS only on one drive it would be easier to recover from should I have another hard drive failure on the drive the OS is loaded on. Same for the programs, files etc.. should that disk develop a problem down the road it would make it much easier to recover from if everything was on a separate disk than the OS?I eventually plan on building a small server for my home network that would be used to run a network that consists of 1 server, 2 Pc's , 1 laptop, 2 Netbooks, several smart phones and 1 centralized laser printer that everyone can print from.

Dec 21, 2011cant get windows to load normally, nor in safe mode and i cant even get into system restore, it loads then there is a quick blue screen and then restarts on its own.... i have a 1TB HD in 4 partitions i can only see the C drive listed and it says 132 out of 931 free which makes sense with all the data on all 4 parts......i took the HD and used an enclosure but the i cant get the D to recognize anywhere......i was thinking maybe using the Combo fix on the boot up might work??

Oct 25, 2012I was turning on my laptop but realised i had to be somewhere else at that time and needed to leave so in a silly rush i just as it was loading i held the power button so it shut down (I know that is a terrible thing to do but was in a rush and wasnt thinking clearly) and now when i turn it on it load but it gets the screen that is all black with only the mouse cursor showing and stops there and does not load to the log in screen. Sep 25, 2011I just changed my CMOS Battery and put the date and time back in the BIOS and now when i get past the POST screen it goes to a "A recent hardware has been changed, click on diagnostic and fix" something like that. so i did that and it goes and checks and comes back saying failed. now i try just clicking on "Start Windows Manually" and the windows 7 icon pops up with 2 little dots then freezes and reboots my pc back to the BIOS. i did a diagnostic from the BIOS and it says my Memory and hard drive is OK.
