View 2 RepliesI have windows 7 on my computer and I want to make a photo I took as my desktop's background, but I want it to be a smaller size and only in the middle of the screen. Everytime I try to make it my background (even after re-sizing it) it takes up the whole space. It is possible to make it my background but only in the center of the screen and not take up the whole screen?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a freeware program that will display photos in the size that Windows displays them when displaying them with the Screen Saver?
Windows Photo Viewer does not display them as large as Screen Saver does.
I have Screen Saver set to centered so it is not increasing the size, Screen Saver just displays them a lot larger than the default Photo Viewer does.
I'm thinking of upgrading from XP to 7, only I'm afraid I won't be able to run Firehand Ember on 7.
Firehand is very old software, which hasn't been upgraded because the original designer died. I recently bought another laptop with XP just to guarantee that I could still use Ember.
So, my question is: does anyone else here use Firehand Ember and if so, were you able to keep it when switching to Win 7?
I know about all the other picture programs out there, but Firehand is my favorite, and trust me... I've tried them all.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust a quick question, since I'm still adjusting to Win 7 Professional (even after a few months). Is it normal for some programs to launch quietly, do something, and then quickly close? I usually have Process Explorer open so I can monitor all running applications at all times, and this evening while my machine was idle, I noticed three programs pop up as daughter processes to services.exe. One of them was dllhost, but the other two I couldn't get a good look at. I'm pretty sure it was NOT the defrag, because that runs daughter to scvhost.exe
Anyhow, I'm just wondering, is there a list anywhere of what tasks launch themselves, what to look out for? MBAM and ESET's NOD32 say my system is clean, but programs running themselves without approval always makes me jittery.
Something that has been bugging me, is that when installing a program, the setup wizards and their subwindows open in the background, rather than on top as is normal. Being absent minded, I will sit and wait for several seconds, until I get impatient and look at the taskbar to see new tabs, which I must select to bring the setup on top. How can I set the OS to always bring these on top by default?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAny ideas on how to tweak the color of the menu background of Windows 7 applications?
To be specific - as I'm not sure of the correct name - I'm talking about the pale blue color which appears behind "File Edit View History " on Firefox (and other programs), below the title header. It is used as the unselected tab background too.
I don't like it!
I want this color to appear uniformly Grey, as in XP, and without the light slim horizontal embellishment cutting through the words.
I don't know where this error hs_err_pid came from.I closed down explorer and there were all this notepad messages on my desktop and I can't get rid of them. Researching, I know this is a Java thing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. My windows update is fully updated.I've run 3 virus programs.I notice this was addressed for someone using XP but what of Windows 7? My add/remove program file only contines the program Java (TM) update 29. Nothing else is listed as far as Java is concerned.I've run cleaner programs and these did not take care of the problem. Every time I restart my machine these errors immediate pop up at start up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using a program called Raw Therapee. I downloaded a new version and on installing it quit saying the old version must be removed. I could not find it listed in Revo Unistaller Pro, so I did a forced uninstall with the location of the main executable. This removed a lot of stuff. I checked the program folder and the folder and many files were still there, so I deleted them. I did a CCleaner in between and after. I then unhide and show system files and deleted the folders in the Appdata of main user and admin account, couldn't find it anywhere else.
CCleaner again and reboot. Went to install the new version again and it claimed that the old version was still installed. I did a search for *aw The* and found an entry in the hidden Program Data Folder. In the Admin account it will not let me in this folder to delete any remnants of the old version of Raw Therapee.
My windows is minimizing the programs that im using. Well not exactly minimizing but sort of putting it back to desktop. I tried to install the windows again but whit no results. it's doing it again. I cant even write my documents in word properly because of this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedExplorer won't update thumbnails after I alter a photo, for example by rotating sideways photos (that is, permanently rotating, using a photo editor program), or by cropping.
How do I get the thumbnails to update?
This is happening for all photos (not just certain ones).
I have tried:
- View > Refresh
- Copying the photos to a new folder and renaming them. Even if a photo has been drastically cropped, the thumbnail is still showing the original, whole one - that is, it's showing parts of the file that DON'T EVEN EXIST
- Entirely disabling the thumbnail cache: Group Policy Editor > 'Turn off caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files'. This *must* force Windows to redraw the thumbnail - but it doesn't!
- Restarting computer after each of the above steps

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have an icon on my taskbar for the program Steam on my taskbar that cannot be removed.
what happened was i changed the name of the one of the program's parent folders, and now when i right click on in, no menu pops up, and i can't drag down to get any menu...
i attempted to fix this by changing the parent folder's name back to it's original, but to no avail.
I set up a program to "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" by right clicking on the program .exe (and/or the program Shortcut) and checking the "run as administrator" option under the compatability tab...to see if the program would run any better.
After evaluation, I decided that the "run as administrator" option was probably not necessary for the program, so I went in and removed the checkbox....thinking that the program would no longer use the "run as administrator" option.
I was evidently wrong, or I did something wrong, because the program still shows the little "administrator" shield thingy on the icon, and it still gives me a popup verifying that I want it run as administrator.
I tried this with several different programs, and I get the same thing...when I want to remove the administrator privs, the program still pops up and asks to run as administrator.
Am I going about this the wrong way?? or am I missing something here??
I "skipped" Vista and went right to Windows 7 x64 Ultra from XP, and I have for the most part been very happy with the new OS. I am still getting a feel for it though.
Examples: I was trying to solve a problem with the game Left-4-Dead..so I took some advice from these forums and "ran as administrator". I have since solved the problem, and I would like to stop running the program as administrator.
After downloading an update of the Adobe lens corrector program from lab.adobe.com I now have the unwanted ask.com search program. This program acts as the default search engine in both Explorer and Firefox when using speech recognition software to initiate a search. Ask.com is not listed with any of the search programs, and is not listed as a program or a plug-in in Windows 7. I even tried restoring Windows 7 to an earlier date but ask.com program still remains in the computer. It does not show up under a malware to search. I would like to get rid this unwanted piece of crap but I don't know how.
