Oct 25, 2009Is it possible to use the upgrade disc to format C drive (it has the Windows 7 RC activated, I can also reinstall Windows Vista if I have to), and do a clean install?

Cannot Create Data Recovery Disc To Let Me Format C Drive?
Oct 29, 2011My son is running Windows 7 Pro on a sad little 1 Gb RAM PC 3.4 GHz and of course it is somewhat underpowered and the PC is badly in need of a formatiing anyway..Problem is I can't get to a Format command anywhere??????I can get into BIOS OK, set the DVD as first boot option but when I save it (F10) and then it reboots, the screen always comes up with the "Start Windows Normally" option! I can reach the "boot from any CD/DVD option but for some weird option the arrows on the keyboard will not alow me to move away from this latter choice yet the board works fins with everything else.I can't get it to boot from the original Win 7 CD, Windows Vista or even Pro OS's ................ so of course again cannot get to the format command.I have created a System Recovery Disc but I am not 110% sure how to use this disc but nonetheless cannot seem to find an option for formatting there anyway.

Oct 21, 2009I'm moving from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro and originally thought about a dual boot. But I've convinced myself that I won't use Vista once I get everything reinstalled in Windows 7, and now wish to install Windows 7 Pro on a new drive. I'll take my Vista drive out, install the new drive and load Windows 7, and then, put the Vista drive back in as a secondary so that I'll have easy access to all my data as I complete the changeover. I can then use the Vista drive as a backup, etc.
I've ordered the Windows 7 Pro upgrade disc. Question is, do I need to reinstall Vista on the new drive before I put in the upgrade disc? Or can I just put in the new drive, boot Windows 7 from the install disc, and then insert the Vista disc if it asks for the qualifying media (or does Windows 7 even ask for qualifying media?
Windows 7 Upgrade Disc Won't Clearly Install
Sep 20, 2010I bought a new hard drive and win 7 upgrade disc (I do own a copy of win 98 and win xp upgrade so thats all legal) I put the win 7 upgrade disc in and it started to install it gets right to the bit where you need to put your product key in and then its says INVALID LICENCE KEY I ve tried and tried but thats all it will say (and yes I did un check the activate windows on line)
So I then tried installing my xp upgrade disc after it scans the hard drive it says please put your copy of win 98 in the disc drive to see if you are eligible for the upgrade (not exact words but you get the drift) after it checks it then it says put you xp disc back in the drive. but it wont install it just keeps going round in a loop doing the same things as above and wanting to re formate the drive all the time and asking for the win 98 disc.
I am now thinking of having to install win 98 then xp upgrade then win 7 (I want to use the 64 bit disc too) seems a bit long winded but I don't know what else to do. Its a bit of a pain because win 98 disc won't recognise my cd drive I assume because its SATA, anyway I have an old ATA/IDE cd drive which I ve just rigged up and win 98 is now formating the drive but its gona take ages.

Oct 20, 2009I just tested this with Windows 7 Upgrade disk:
MS makes it clear that using Windows 7 Upgrade disk with XP requires a clean (Custom) install, which most people assume means over the same XP. This can be done, and places your files in windows.old for redistribution. This is only an option for Vista, since you can do an in-place upgrade which reinstalls your programs, files and settings.
You can also direct the clean install to another formatted partition or second primary formatted HDD which allows for a cleaner install. The problem is that you may still have XP in the first partition on the same HDD, which you probably will not want for long, and a laptop is hard to connect to a second HDD. Plus, an OS in an outer HDD partition takes a fraction longer to be read by the laser.
But there is a way to install from XP with an Upgrade disk to to a clean formatted first partition. Here is the way I did it:
Use a Partition manager like Paragon or Easeus to copy your XP partition over to a partition other than the first (or install XP to another partition) then use EasyBCD to Add it to the Boot Menu if necessary.
Now comes the hat trick: Boot into the new XP partition and use Disk Management to mark it active, then go to Control Panel>Folder options and show hidden system files. Make sure boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com are in the roots of both OS drives so you can boot back into XP later.
Now delete and format the first partition using Disk Management (or Easeus) from the XP desktop, then without rebooting install WIndows 7 to the first partition. After install, you can copy files over from XP via explorer and then hide or delete the XP partition, because you now have the best operating system ever and it's installed on formatted metal from an Upgrade disk.
Be sure to use Windows 7's great new imaging backup to image your installation after you get it like you want it, so you'll never have to reinstall again.

Jul 9, 2010Well I was wanting to clean install win 7 to wipe my hard drive as it is full of junk and I plan on moving to a new pc. I was wanting to know two things -
1 - Would these method on this website [URL] work to clean install
2 - If I take my hard drive and put it in a completely new computer would I get any activation issues if I were to clean install win 7 or if I just left the hard drive as it is would it have any problems
My copy of win 7 is Home premium and I downloaded it through the UK student deal although I bought a backup disc from them.

Oct 27, 2010I have a laptop which has been giving me a hard time lately, and I need to reinstall windows 7 (for the 4th time in 1.2 years). I have never reformatted it before and all I have is the windows 7 upgrade disk that came with it (I got it back in September when all of those free upgrade deals were going on, it originally had vista.) I read that you can have activation issues after formatting the hard drive while installing using the upgrade disc. I think Microsoft let you do it if your email them to activate it, but I'm not sure and I don't know where you would do this. Since I don't feel like formatting it, installing vista, and then reinstalling 7.

Dec 26, 2009So I was not sure about Windows 7 and I have a PC with 2 physically separate internal hard drives. So I retained my vista OS on my C:/ drive (named OS) and did a clean install of windows 7 (using an upgrade disc student edition) on my D:/ drive (DATA).
After setting up, using and liking windows 7, I want to eliminate my vista system, which is boated now, completely. However, apparently with an intel chipset, I can't simply format the OS drive using the disc management utility, even though when I boot windows 7, it is renamed the D:/ drive because the bootloader is on the OS drive. I have tried changing the DATA drive to an active, bootable drive in disc manager. Unfortunately, I can't seem to make it the primary partition.

After spending about a week customizing my Windows 7 install, I am not too happy about the possibility having to reinstall on the OS drive and go from there. What method should I use to format my OS drive, and still be able to boot the DATA drive. I would then like to use my OS drive for storing music, and pictures, etc.
I have an external HD to work with. I suppose I could image the DATA drive with the Windows 7 install, format the OS drive, and then restore the image to the C drive, but that still leaves the problem of how to format the OS drive in the first place. Also, I've never done a recovery from image before, and am not big on the prospect.
Bad Install Disc - Drive Always Locked For Chkdsk
May 17, 2011I just built a new pc and when I run cmd as admin and do a chkdsk/f or /r, every time it says the drive is locked, and it will do the chkdsk on sys restart. I am 99% sure I used the same disc for both installs of win 7 x64. Is there something wrong with my install discs or something? Did the files I moved from the old pc have a virus or something in it? Are the drives locked because I didn't partition them correctly? How do I figure out why my drive is always locked?

Jan 15, 2013Last night I managed to copy some photographs onto a CD- R disc and they played on the TV through a DVD player. This evening I attempted to load some photographs onto some discs which came with no marking on them so they must have been cheap. The outer cover of the discs said,DVD-R and when I attempted to start to use them a message which I set out below came up saying the disc needed formatting. I looked up how to format a disc and I followed the instructions as far as I could which I set out below.
1. Insert a disc into your computer's CD or DVD drive. I did that.
2. In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc. That did come up.
3. In the Burn a disc dialog box, type a name for your new disc. I did that.
Another box came up asking. How do you want to use this disc? Like a USB flash drive. With a CD/DVD player and I clicked onto the With a CD/DVD player.I then clicked onto next.A large empty box with nothing in it came up and a small block came up saying. Windows can't read the disc in drive D: Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it.From then on in I was stuffed because there were no formatting options to be seen. Any suggestions will be welcome although the thought crossed my mind that pherhaps I need to buy some CD-R discs but I thought I should use DVD discs.
