Flashing Networking Icon In XP Not Found In Windows 7?
Nov 14, 2010
I just switch to Windows 7 last week. It's Windows 7 Home Basic Edition. In my old XP, there's a green networking icon at right bottom corner, when there's traffic, it flashes. This icon is useful when i downloading large file so i can tell that if the downloading is still active. In Windows 7 i don't see that green flashing icon?second question. I have an old TV card, when I plug in, Windows 7 installed driver automatically.. so driver has been installed.. but how to watch TV? the TV card comes with an application that is not compatible with Windows 7

I tried to download a PDF but something went wrong during the download and I ended up with a file icon on my desktop without any extension and having 0 bytes. When I try and delete this file icon I get the error message: "Could not find item. This is no longer located in C:UsersMynameDesktop. Verify the item's location and try again". This seems like a contradiction - Windows is showing a file icon on the desktop but then says there is no file there! I have tried searching for a file by that name elsewhere and there is nothing. I have also tried cleaning the reg and doing a disk cleanup. How to delete this useless file icon from my desktop?

I've been using Windows 7 build 7100 happily for the past 6 months. But recently it develops a weird problem: The application window (like IE, firefox, outlook, explorer) flash quickly. I can see "Not responding" displayed in the title in between the each flash. I have Quad proc + 6GB memory, so the system slowness should not be a problem. The flash happens quite often, when I scroll down the screen, or typing, or have some user interaction with the application. I've disabled Aero interface, no help. I did Windows update, no help. Someone recommends removing nVidia driver, I did not try, as I have been using the same driver for the past 6 months without problem. I've installed Windows Security Essentials recently. But disabling it does not work either. Why do the flash start to happen recently?

This morning one of our computers started acting strangely. Any window screens we have open, whether an Internet Explorer window, My Computer screen, etc, the top bars are flashing in and out. It is similar to the flashing like when it is trying to alert you of an error message / box you have to click through to do something else. The home screen is fine, and shows no signs of flashing or flickering, it only shows on any window screens you have open. It will interrupt you when you are trying to open drop down menus etc as well. I have gone into screen resolution, but as soon as I open a drop down box, it will close as soon as the screen flashes again. However I was able to change the resolution to a lower setting, but it still flashed. I also tried to change the screen refresh rate, but there was only one option to choose, 60 hertz. The computer is an Acer Laptop, running Windows 7 and AVG Antivirus, but I dont have any other exact specs on it right now as im working from a different computer. My mother said it had updated last night with a possible new Windows update? Again the back / desktop screen appears fine, it just seems to affect any windows you have open.

I am working on a Dell Inspiron laptop (model 1750) that boots fine to safe mode however, when i boot to regular mode the screen starts to flicker at the logon screen. No visible buttons are available to select the user. I have tried startup repair, uninstalled video drivers and scanned for and removed malware. The machine is running Win 7 SP 1(64 bit).

I can boot in safe mode and i have scanned computer with mal-ware, mcafee, and eset scanner . have not found a virus. I did lose the ability to watch you-tube videos, and the last error i got was adobe crashed. i don't know what to do from here. I have windows disk and thought about booting from it and doing a system repair but when i put that disk in i do not have the system repair option just an installation option.

I was watching a football game on firstrowsport.eu and my computer (a hp pavilion desktop) just shut down uncommanded. I waited for it to restart, and after the BIOS screen, it just had a flashing cursor. I used the disc version of PartedMagic to get into my computer and ran the fdisk-l command. [code]

Ive had this computer for about 5 years and recently it has started to boot up really slowly
It goes through post like normal and then hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left for up to 3 mins (maybe more, i didnt actually time it) before the windows 7 splash screen comes up I rarely re-start my computer, but now when i do im always afraid that it wont start up with how long it sits at that screen
The stuff ive found in searching about it has been about computers that dont boot at all when they have this screen, so im worried that will happen to me Ive also found that it might be the MBR being damaged, but in all those cases the people with that problem have more than 1 OS installed, i only have 1 installed
I would just do the steps to repair the MBR but i want to make sure there isnt another/better solution before i do
The computer runs fine other than this problem I've never formatted it (i know i probably should after 5 years but i dont want to) I didnt know where to post this sort of thing, debugging seemed like the best choice

I have an Acer aspire 5733-6607 with Intel Core i3 CPU 2.40GHz.
My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. I tried F8 and it goes to the black screen with acer and where I can press F2 or F12 and then back to screen with blinking cursor. I tried restoring default settings in the F2 menu also.

I have an odd problem I've not been able to fix. I have a laptop from a friend of a friend, so I don't know much of the history of it.Essentially, when started normally the laptop hits the windows 7 welcome screen, but instead of displaying a list of users, it flashes again and again. The cursor shows the busy circle next to it for a split second, then the screen goes black, then the screen comes back with the busy cursor. The system starts normally in safe mode.I've tried to disable all of the services and startup items with MSConfig, but that's made no difference. I've also run sfc /scannow which on it's first pass detected and fixed an item, but on subsequent passes sees no problems. After that was a bust I decided to try to revert to a system restore point. There are several the choose from, but once selected the restore doesn't actually take place. The system simply shuts down after preparing to restore, and when restarted in safe mode states that it was unable to start the shadow copy service (which to the best of my understanding can't be started in safe mode)

When I get to the splash screen it just blinks. It won't boot. I've tried going into the safe mode by pressing F8 at the previous screen. I've tried booting from a start disk. It won't go into the advanced boot options, and booting from a disk made no difference. This has happened before but I was able to get in through safe mode. Once I get in I can do a system restore and it will work for a while. How can I get in to my machine?

I have an Acer Extensa 5620 laptop, which came with an Intel Core 2 Duo Merom T5250 processor (1.5GHz). I'm upgrading the CPU to a Core 2 Duo Penryn T8300 (2.4GHz). Did a bit of research beforehand to determine that my mothorboard supports it, and it does, but only if I upgrade my BIOS (PhoenixBIOS) from version 1.16 to 1.23 or later. So I downloaded the most recent version from Acer's website (Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Notebook, Extensa 5620), and got a .zip file containing the following files:
ACERACDC.EXE
CLB-135.bat
CLB-135.ROM
CLB-135.WPH
HFB135US.bld
phlash16.exe
[code]....
It seems there are several options in this download for flashing ones BIOS. The simplest one, from a bit of googling seems to be to run CLB-135.EXE as administrator from within windows. Before I do this though, I want to know if I've got everything right, since a failed flashing could brick my laptop. One thing that sets off alarm bells is that doing it this way uses the winflash32 utility. Although my laptop came with 32 bit Vista, I'm currently using 64 bit Windows 7. My question is: will this work? Or will I need to track down winflash64? Or, is this a terrible way to flash my BIOS and should I do something else completely?

I wanted to install more RAM, but Supermicro support told me I needed to update BIOS (flash it) to enable it to accept higher RAM.After I did this, the BIOS seems to have lost the record that boots my Windows 7 installation. After going through the checks, it just comes up with "Operating System not found."So I thought that, since I have two SATA drives, I could try installing Windows on my redundant disk to see if that might generate a dual boot menu.I was able to successfully install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2nd disk, but it will only boot into that one. It seems my system has completely forgotten about my other, working, installation. Is there a process for recovering the boot information and setting it up such that I can go back to using my other installation?

I turned it off immediately. When I turned it on after 3 hours, It went to start up repair then it displayed a Fatal Error BSOD. Then it proceeded to switch to flashing multi-colored lights which resulted in burning smell from the computer.

i am quite disappointed to see the lack of support for Microsoft's Virtual PC networking configurations. If there is anyone that can help me with this,I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as primary OS installed. I have also installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (not Windows XP Mode). Inside this virtual machine, I have installed Windows XP Professional (x86). I need to have the Windows XP connect to Windows 7 via networking. According to most threads, I need to install Microsoft Loopback Adapter in Win 7 to be able to connect the VM to Win 7. I have configured the loopback adapter (on Win 7) to use IP 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, no default gateway and DNS server addresses. On the virtual machine, I have set the LAN connection to use IP 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, no default gateway and DNS server addresses. No connection.

Sorry but I'm sure this is now old hat. I've been networking PCs successfully since DOS 2 days but Windows 7 has me ****ed.
I have two PCs running XP and a BT router both work well but have just bought my wife an HP Netbook running Windows 7. I have set up the network 4 times but everytime I restart the Netbook all settings are lost, the shared printer and doc folders are not there and with the exception of a Windows Media folder on the XP desktop NOTHING is visible.
I suspect that it will take at least two hours to set it all up again but if anyone can give me a quick fix or tell me why it can't remember anything, or even the name of some network software that works, you'll be my friend for life!

I have 4 computers on my home network. Laptop runs Win 7 Pro; Storm runs Win 7 Ultimate; S-Mach runs Win7 Ultimate (64 bit); AMD64 runs Win 2K. All have the same login and password. Win 7 machines have network discovery turned on. All in the same workgroup.
Laptop sees all machines but can't access S-Mach. It can access all others.
S-Mach sees all machines and can access all drives and folders.
Storm see only Laptop and can access it. Network map shows S-Mach but it does not show up in Network.
AMD64 sees Laptop and can access it; nothing else.
All machines are set up for sharing with full control permission to Everyone.
When I try to access Storm from AMD64 I get the error, "Network path is not found"
Any suggestions?

I decided that I wanted this cheap dell laptop to run faster, so I used a tool to "strip down" my windows 7 32bit. It worked stupendously well. Everything seems two or three times as fast now as it was before.
BUT, I now have no wifi access. I confirmed that the wifi drivers are installed. They register as "working properly" but I am not finding ANY wifi signals. The problem is within the computer somewhere. Other computers in my home find 5 or 6 signals (as this one used to). The strip down tool also removed the network diagnostics feature of windows 7, so I am without recourse.
I am, however, able to connect to the internet through my iphone (pdanet) being directly connected to my laptop.
