Failed Update Means No Internet
Nov 18, 2012
Over the past week I have been prompted for multiple windows updates. Some have worked, some have not. I had a tiny box show up last night saying that my computer was going to run maintenance and I delayed it. As I shut down, it gave me the installing or configuring updates blue screen. This morning I got that screen again, got to 100% before it told me it failed. Opened windows and all looked ok.Now I cannot open webpages. IE/firefox/Opera all open, but none can open any website. I get the usual screen you get when you can't access a page. Internet is working in the house. I've tried multiple other devices. Wireless is turned on with the laptop and I attempted to run the troubleshooter for my wireless connection. It says the connection is fine.

I was applying the some updates to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the update process failed. I shut down the computer and when it rebooted, the computer reported my Internet connection was down. My computer is still getting an IP address and DNS settings from the router. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but as soon as I try to ping my router I get the destination host net unreachable message
- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IPv4 (netsh int IP reset C: esetlog.txt & netsh Winsock reset (both as administrator))
- I have tried uninstalling .NET since that is one of the upgrades that failed.
- I have tried re-running Windows Update to see if the updates which had downloaded would install (failed)
Windows troubleshooter is worthless as it keeps suggesting the network cable is unplugged or broken.

I have reviewed my update history and noticed security update KB2621440 failed in MARCH, I haven't had any problems, when I look at the details it says error code:80004004, since then all other security updates have installed okay. Will the fact that latest security updates were successful mean that everything is okay.

Long ago i updated my bluetooth adapter driver, and the caused malfunction. I downloaded the driver from Dell Support website (apparently there are 3 under 'Network', and i get a lucky shot) and the bluetooth is fucntioning once again. however i checked through the device manager and found '!' marks on Bluetooth Peripheral Device. something is not right. Recent windows update (automatically) has failed to install over and over again, hence prompting to redownload the same update every time i turn on the laptop. Specifically, its is 'security update for the .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2: January 8, 2013 (KB2742595)'.. There is another update coming (also tagged as Important) but come to fail as well. So currently there is 2 pending updates. While im having these problem, the boot time has increases noticeably. Long black screen appears before the login page turn up. Some says this is related to device/driver error. im not sure myself. Very recently i have my Avast Antivirus not working (turned off) and every time i ask it to turn on or resume, nothing happens. It remain not-functioning and so, i uninstall Avast and adopt AVG Antivirus. i think this is around when i was installing the bluetooth driver from Dell.

I have an HP Pavilion G6-1d40ca. It crashed the other day while I was using it, and when I restarted it, it went to BIOS update. It froze while updating, and died in itself (I think the battery died, it wasn't plugged in. I never knew about BIOS update, so I wasn't expecting for the battery to die during the update, so I didn't plug it in.) Second time, booted it up (it was plugged in this time), and went into BIOS update once again. All's good, was able to use the laptop for about five minutes, then it crashed once again. Now, when I boot it up, nothing comes up on the screen. No nothing. The power button is on, the wi-fi is on, the LED light is blinking non-stop, more than 6 times than what is referred to the HP website.
I tried doing the remove battery and adapter, press power button for 30 seconds, plug it in without the battery, but to no avail. I also did the whole win+B, but doesn't work either. I tried pressing f11, but nothing comes up on the screen. I don't remember where I put the recovery discs that came with the laptop. I thought I put it on the box together with recovery discs for our other computers at home, but I guess I didn't. The thing is, I don't know where to begin, since I don't have anything on the screen itself. Not even a start-up logo or something.

Our PC internet quit working a few days ago. Our wireless laptop and Ipods work. After some (hours) of playing, I noticed our homepage was set to something Babylon. So realized we had some virus issues after research. I have run SpyBot S&D, SAS and Malwarebytes- all came up with some various serious threats. CouponBar, Babylon, I want it! etc. These programs seemed to have removed all the problems, but I still do not have access. My LAN can find my network, but says "no internet access" the wireless does not connect either on this PC.
My computer knowledge is minimal but after comparing various ipconfig screens, it seems to have something to do with the IP addresses. I read that 169.254...is not good. I disabled IPV6 and when obtaining IP addresses automatically didn't work- I typed in the ones listed on the details part of the adapter. Here is a screen shot of my IPconfig/all with LAN only: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . .. . .

I've been having a problem with a windows 7 home premium update. I have no virus's or spyware my computer runs find, but when I click update it will say 9 updates so I click update. Then when it updates they all update perfectly accept for one and it's an update for Internet Explorer 9 I have a Dell 1750 Inspiron AVG Antivirus and Firewall all included, Malewarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy, So when I do these updates it restarts to finish them up then all of a sudden I can not connect to the internet no more, It says no signal witch there is a full bar and everything I tried clicking connect but it says limited access, So I fool around trying to fix it but it wont let me do nothing I know updates are very important for laptops but it's just wont let me online, But it would work really well before the updates is there anyway to get pass that and fix it I usually just do system restore at an earlier time before the updates cause I can never get back on the internet connected?

So my son was in the middle of one of his blood bowl league games this evening and a popup asked him if he wanted to install a Windows 7 update. He's only 12 and inexperienced enough that he didn't just tell the system to wait a few hours until he could finish his game, so he told it to go ahead and instal. The result was his near-instant loss of internet (as well as his game, as he was timed out and his opponent got the win).
Even more serious, after the update was finished and his computer was restarted, he still cannot get an internet connection. I've tried rebooting, complete shutdown and then reboot, and asking the computer's internet tools to diagnose/fix the problem, all to no avail.
I read about running a system restore (restoring to an earlier version of windows), but when I tried I learned that that aspect of his system had been shut off.
I know there must be SOME way to fix this problem, but I can't think of what it might be. Even if the problem is due to the new Windows version, he has no way to download a fix for it because he has no internet connection.

My net stopped working on 16Jun. I got home from work today (17Jun) to troubleshoot and received the same problems that Amelia66 had in her post. I was connected to my router, but had "limited connectivity" and the troubleshooter said that "windows couldn't automatically bind the ip protocol stack." I spent an hour on the phone with Netgear's tech support thinking it was the usb wireless adapter. All the other computers/phones/printers in the house could connect. After the netgear guy hung up on me or dropped the call and didn't call back (nor was I going to call him back), I went to the store and got a new usb wireless adapter (cisco this time). Uninstalled the old one, installed the new one and...same deal. Connected to the router, but not the internet. Read through Amelia66's posting and decided to try to system restore to before the 16th to see if that would work since the instructions listed there by Ihatecats seemed over my head. The only reason for the restore points were windows updates. Restored to the previous windows update and now it works. I plugged the old wifi adapter in before the restore since that would be the program installed before the restore.

I have tried connecting to my router with both wireless and lan cable but they both fail. What is strange is that my vista laptop (currently using) has no problems connecting either wirelessly or using the same lan cable as my desktop failed with. My windows 7 desktop was working fine earlier today but after I went out it installed the updates and since then no amount of rebooting or restarting of the router has fixed the problem.

I am having a confusing time trying to figure out why my internet went from 10+ Mbps down to <1 Mbps after simply downloading a wireless card driver. From the beginning:My wireless download speed was 10+Mbps, and I was using the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. This information is found in the Device Manager, under "Network".The driver for the card was 5.30.x.y (I can't remember the specific version number, but I do remember it was 5.30.something.something). Upon navigating to the Dell webpage, I wanted to see if there were any drivers for the same wireless card that were more updated, to perhaps increase performanceI navigated to the page for my computer (Dell Latitude D830), here. That page is for my model laptop. You'll notice that, in the drop down for "Operating System", there is no option to select Windows 7.
Regardless, I navigated to the driver under "Network", the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card, and downloaded it. It was version 5.60.188.1, from 11/9/2009. This is where my problem began. After installing the driver and rebooting, my internet speed instantly went to below 1 Mbps. I have no clue why installing a later wireless card driver would mess up my speed. My only hypothesis is that the driver I downloaded is only compatible with Vista. Do I just re-download driver version 5.30.x.y or something to get it back? Why did it get so slow?

I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.
