Wireless Card Driver Update SLOWED Internet Speed Drastically?
May 17, 2011
I am having a confusing time trying to figure out why my internet went from 10+ Mbps down to <1 Mbps after simply downloading a wireless card driver. From the beginning:My wireless download speed was 10+Mbps, and I was using the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. This information is found in the Device Manager, under "Network".The driver for the card was 5.30.x.y (I can't remember the specific version number, but I do remember it was 5.30.something.something). Upon navigating to the Dell webpage, I wanted to see if there were any drivers for the same wireless card that were more updated, to perhaps increase performanceI navigated to the page for my computer (Dell Latitude D830), here. That page is for my model laptop. You'll notice that, in the drop down for "Operating System", there is no option to select Windows 7.
Regardless, I navigated to the driver under "Network", the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card, and downloaded it. It was version 5.60.188.1, from 11/9/2009. This is where my problem began. After installing the driver and rebooting, my internet speed instantly went to below 1 Mbps. I have no clue why installing a later wireless card driver would mess up my speed. My only hypothesis is that the driver I downloaded is only compatible with Vista. Do I just re-download driver version 5.30.x.y or something to get it back? Why did it get so slow?

I have a problem with my wireless internet card (Qualcomm Atheros Ar9485). It has trouble connecting to websites. Speed and ping is fine, but it is the connecting that often fails. I have done tests on my other computer and on my iPad, and everything works fine. I know that there is something wrong with the wifi card, because when I plug in my ethernet cable, everything works fine. My wifi drivers are up to date. I can still browse the web wirelessly, but 30-60% of the time, the connecting fails. I have had this kind of issue before (All browser slow/not loading pages) and I got the problem solved by switching wifi channels.

I've installed windows 7 64bit on a brand new 500gb hard drive.I've installed the basic software, i.e. antivirus and firewall.I've ran and installed all windows updates. The system runs beautifully until I connect to the internet. As soon as I do this the whole system slows down to a snails pace.Opening directories, starting software, browsing, everything.once off the internet everything returns to normal.

See my computer specs below. I feel that I might need to update a sound driver because I recently got new speakers and they only play sound from the right speaker, like my old previous ones. My old ones might still have both speakers working. And I tested the new speakers with my phone and both speakers would work, so the issue is with my computer.

For some reason, Windows 7 does not find any adapters on my computer. I have heard that Netgear does not support Windows 7 yet, (Aren't vista drivers supposed to work on Windows 7 anyway? I have a WPN111 adapter) so I'm using a built in pci-e Ralink for my adapter that came with my comp. I downloaded the most recent driver for it off of HP's site, but when I install it on Windows 7, it comes out saying that my system does not meet the miniumum requirements.

The Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H WB comes with a Wireless Adapter/Bluetooth PCIe card.
Atheros AR5BWB222. Gigabyte calls it a GC-WB300D
The driver is being reported as having an issue by a splat in device manager with the following message: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52). The Card works fine in another system that also runs Windows 7 x64 Pro.
I have called Gigabyte, uninstalled and the reverse in safe mode also. Done everything I know. Why it works in one system and not this one is the key. Once it was seen to work on another system Gigabyte tossed me into the ditch.
I have tried drivers from the boxed CD and their site. The Bluetooth side of the card which uses its own drivers is OK.
Windows 7 X64 Pro SP1
Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H WB
Intel 3770K
Kingston 16GB 2133 Genesis RAM
Corsair 750Watt Pro Series
Sapphire 6850 GPU

I had a sabrent wireless desktop card that was a major problem after upgrading to Windows 7. It would some a fe wminutes and then do nothing for the next 12 hours. SOmetime it would should the connection is all good, at at times it would say DNS server is not responding.
I used the latest RALINK drivers from their website that said it was for Windows 7. Called Sabrent and RALINK like 10 times, left voicemails and notes for tech support, they never EVER called me back.
Since I had this Belkin wireles routre at home which has been doing pretty good, I decided to buy a belkin wireless card too. I landed up buying the Belkin F5D8001 N1 Desktop Wireless card.
Guess what? it comes with a XP CD. Their site has a newer version for Visa 32/64 bit as well. How ever the XP software does not get installed from the CD. If I point to the drivers folder on the CD it does not work too.
When I try installing the new execuctable on their website (vista 32/64 bit) it says the version could not be determined. I tried the compatibility mode for every damn possible version XP, Win 2000, Vista SP1 , SP2...no luck...its the same message.
Belkin says they don't know when the windows 7 driver will be out.
The seller refused to buy the card back!
Any hopes left?

I'm having trouble installing the driver for my Linksys Wireless-G PCI WMP54Gv4-card. I've tried the driver from linksys' homepage and the driver on the CD but nothing works.
Someone who got a clue what I have to do?

I've recently built the system described in my specs and all worked well untill I installed the second HDD. I want the second disk as a file backup disk as I don't need the performance of RAID 0 but want easy, constant access to a backup disk without having to plug in an external. The second disk is recognised by the BIOS and Windows (it can be accessed and I formatted and mapped it and read and write is fine). The problem is that I've noticed that now instead of Windows 7's awesome 2-3 second wake from S3 sleep that I had with one drive, it now takes about 15-20s. The second HDD is definitely the culprit as I've pulled the power on it and Windows will wake in 3 seconds again. Windows seems to wait for the second disk to spin up before it wakes 'cause I can hear it click and spin at wake. I asked friends with multiple disks and they said that their second disk only spins up when they first access them in explorer. I thought this would be a simple BIOS setting to set mine to do the same but I cannot find anything appropriate. The only thing in Windows' Power Management settings that I can find relating to HDDs is the inactive time to spin down; nothing about spin up at boot/wake.
Google has only offered me something called PUIS or PM2 power setting for SATA drives that was made for older PSUs that couldn't handle the power requirements of spinning up two HDDs simultaneously. This sounded like it might work but the setting is apparently made with SATA jumpers (I didn't even know that SATA drives had jumpers) and on inspection of my drives, mine don't.Does anybody know of a Windows setting for this or is it a BIOS thing? I've asked Gigabyte but they've not replied in a few days and I don't think they're going to any time soon

On my friend's Toshiba laptop, when we connect to the router using a LAN cable, the download speed is around 15 Mb/s. When we connect wirelessly, the download speed is about 1 Mb/s, although sometimes it goes as high as 4 Mb/s. I've already tried uninstalling/reinstalling the wireless driver.

I'm wondering if there are any way to test the speed/bandwidth of an SD card with built-in Windows 7 utilities/diagnostic software?
And in the absence of that, what are the best (and safest) freeware utilities to do this test?
I'm not having a problem with my machine, simply want to figure out which of my SD cards are the slowest and fastest so I can decide which to use and when.

I am having trouble with my wireless download speeds. I have installed the Ralink RT61 Turbo Wireless LAN Card. The driver is updated to the latest version. Sometimes my wireless internet works fine and I get download speeds of about 10 Mbps. Other times I get speeds of 0.1-0.3 Mbps. When I notice these particularly slow speeds I check on my laptop and there is not problem. Also, my roommate just built his computer and he has the same wireless card.
