Duplicate Identical Icons In Personal Folders?
Jan 30, 2012
I have split my user profile onto a larger mirrored drive using a junction link. This works perfectly. However when viewing my personal folders I see multiple identical icons for favourites, links, my music etc. When I navigate to the actual area everything appears as it should be.If I try to delete one of these identical icons then both icons go to the recycle bin along with the files inside the relevant folder. Please see screen shot. I could recreate my profile and point the new profile at the relevant folders but setting up all my applications again will be a bit of a nightmare that I would like to avoid if possible.

I created a .pst export so that I could copy my outlook information from my main computer to a new laptop. It was successful but made a duplicate personal and sub folders on the main computer only. Also on the outlook today page it doesn't make any counts for incoming messages or other countable folders. I can save the sub folder titles to it but it doesn't recognized and put a count in even though I check both areas or just one etc... If I go to the folder from the outlook today page the folder is empty but if I go to the folder from the navigation list I can see the messages and also a count. The notebook Outlook is working properly

I'm looking for a program to get all of my personal data organized. I know there are plenty duplicate file finder apps out there, but what are your experiences with them? I'd love to find one that will show me duplicate pictures, even if renamed. It would be even better if it easily allowed me to specify a directory to put all of the duplicates in...so they can be removed from a drive. I probably don't need to worry about other types of files, as it is just my photos that would have duplicates.

I have a problem with my network folders for my dad's pc. His pc is what I primarily use to download software and such so I just network his folder so that I can gain access to downloaded files w/o going through other medias such as a flash drive etc.
Problem is that when a file is recently downloaded a lock appears on the file and is not accessible to other computers in the network, while my other computers have no problem similar to this . Also my dad's network folder has only 2 main folders that I have shared: My Documents and Downloads. But in the network folder there are around 7 copies of each folder, i.e. Downloads~1 - Downloads~7 all with the same contents and such and its cluttering the network folder . What do I do to repair this? I have tried unsharing the folder and sharing it again with no luck.

In this tutorial, we'll demonstrate how to work with files and folders, specifically the personal folders on your computer. Every user account on a Windows 7 machine has several personal folders designed for storing documents, music, pictures, videos and other data you work with. (We'll also be covering user accounts in a later tutorial). Being able to navigate around these folders is an important skill to master.

I was pinning some shortcuts to the task bar and removing these shortcuts from the desktop. Somehow I ended up with duplicate shortcuts and icons for each one that was originally on the computer desktop (even those I was not moving). These duplicates are not useable - they cannot be right clicked; they do not highlight when hovered over.

I have numerous desktop icons (shortcuts, recycle bin, my documents folder) that I cannot delete. These icons are duplicates of the normal active icons that are either on my desktop or in the taskbar. The "unusable" icons aren't even recognized as being icons (so that if I right click on the desktop and select view and uncheck "show desktop icons", these icons remain). The icons cannot be selected (either right or left clicked), they cannot be moved, they do not highlight when moused over. Any suggestions on how to remove these? I've tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting several times, etc. They do not show up in the desktop folder within c:\users\<your user name>\desktop folder or the public desktop folder either.

I am having a weird issue.I have a network with 3 PC's and 2 PS3's.1. My PC-Win 72. Roommate's-Vista Home Premium 3. His girlfriend's- Vista Home PremiumI have enabled sharing on all the external HDD's that are connected to my Win 7 machine.ll sharing and security has been set accordingly, and works perfect......except for some reason, my USER folder "Jay", is completely visible to both Vista machines.hen I access the Network folder on my Win 7 machine, only the Public folders are visible on the two Vista machines. The strange thing is that when I look at the properties of "Jay" folder, it shows it as being shared, yet in the Advanced sharing window, "Jay" is NOT shared. "users" folder is shared, so I am assuming this is why "Jay" is shared as it is a sub-folder of "users".
And when I look at the permission settings for "Jay", only myself and SYSTEM had permissions. Now, I managed to workaround this by adding another permission rule to the "Jay" folder. I added NETWORK and set it to DENY straight across the board. So now, my roommates can still see my USERS folder, but cannot access it.This, however, is NOT ideal, as this also blocks them from seeing/accessing my PUBLIC folder. I only set the NETWORK deny permissions on "Jay" folder, yet ALL network sub-folders of USERS are blocked.

I recently bought a second user machine from a colleague of mine. He re-installed Windows 7 so that everything was fresh and set up a new profile for me but I wasn't happy with the name of the profile that he had set up. Anyway to cut a long story short I created a new profile, copied the old files across and deleted the old profile I wasn't happy with.Everything is working fine and as it should be but I have a now have a couple of annoyances with a number of the programs that I have pinned to the taskbar and the start menu. For example when I pinned Firefox and Thunderbird to the taskbar it has named them as Firefox (2) and Thunderbird (2) as if they are duplicate programs/shortcuts. The same is true with some of the programs that I have pinned to the start menu. For example when I pinned CCleaner to the start menu Windows named it as CCleaner (2) even though it wasn't present in the first place. If I try to rename it to CCleaner (as it should appear) Windows tells me that there is already a program by that name pinned there and it asks me if I would like to rename it CCleaner (3).As far as I can tell it doesn't affect the performance of such programmes, its just really really frustrating. Would it have anything to do with the files that I copied across from my old profile?

I had to reload Windows 7, and made a backup copy of my hard-disk before restore. When I reloaded the backup files, most went well, but some of the .pst files took an extra effort. BUT 7 years of personal folders were nowhere to be found! The backup file is about 58 zipped folders of 200 MB. How can I look up for my personal folders in this backup? Adress book, sent items and some other folders I have recovered, but all my saved e-mails (sent and received) are lost or at least disappeared.

I was trying to relocate some of my personal data folders in my User Profile folder (My Music, My Videos, My Pictures). I right clicked on the folder, selected "Properties" and then selected the "Location" tab from the two rows of tabs. I set the location to my D drive (non-system drive). Clicked "Apply" and "OK". A My Music folder already existed on this drive. Got the prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" That worked for the My Music folder. Then I tried My Pictures folder... same right click, Properties, Location. Set the path to my P drive where I had an already existing My Pictures folder.
Got the same prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" Then I got a warning message that said "Unable to copy folder where one already exists (or some verbage similar to that)". So I tried it again. Nothing. Closed out of all folders and then reopened to try again. When I right clicked on My Pictures in my User Profile and selected properties, there was just a single row of tabs with no Location tab. There was no way to change the path of the folder. ??? Puzzling. So I am looking for a way to repair the User Profile folder and reenable the Location tab on the folder properties. Just did a clean install last night

This morning I was arranging my desktop files and folders. As I clicked the command to sort by item type, suddenly I had duplicates of every file and folder as listed on my desktop. I even had two icons for the recycle bin! I started moving one of each of the duplicated files and folders into one of the duplicated recycle bins.
I rearranged the files and folders. I then emptied one of the recycle bins. I then clicked on the desktop to rearrange the files and folders. Suddenly almost everything else on my desktop disappeared! There were many files and folder on the desktop that are now gone, there are only 7 files and folders left. Is there any way I can recover these missing files and folders.

I bought 6 identical win 7 tablet pc's. (Acer Iconia W501) one for each of us in the famliy. They come with a lot of crapware and the initial startup - process and cleaning took forever. Now my neighbor want the same setup. All the computers are exactly identical. Before we had Windows XP machines and by using the cloning software from Easeus I took ,from just one of the pc's, a complete Cartion sector copy to an external USB harddrive. Then using a easeus boot cd on any of my other identical XP machines I could simply clone this single copy back to any of the identical xp machines, and they would work fine. The question is then : Is this possible with Windows 7 home premium machines ? They all have their seperate windows license, so will 6 identical cloned machines be able to work. Can windows "feel" that it is not the original windows it came with, but the system software from its "sister". I am reluctant to just try it out, since none of the new tablets came with a Windows 7 install disc. Once im a through the startup cloning, can I rely on this one copy to be enough for future rescue-clonings ? or do I need to take a clone of each pc?

I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.
I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.
Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.

So, I wake up today and BitDefender scans and detects some virus'. During this time, I'm getting a few prompts which I close. At one point, I click the windows logo AKA start button, then go to All Programs and I notice that my list is pretty much empty. At first, my C:Program Files also wasn't showing up. I guess the virus hid those files, because they showed up once I unhid them via the folder options.Luckily, I think I may have been able to get rid of the irus/trojan/malware/whatever. I'm still going to be running scans, butunfortunately I have to work from my computer at the same time. I can go to into C:Program Files to find programs I want to use and start them up, but I would much prefer they appear in the "All Programs" listing.Windows 7 - Home Basic 64-bit

I am brand new to this site so forgive me if I miss a step. I was wondering if someone who is good at debugging dump files could give me a second set of eyes on these 2 I will attach. One BSOD is DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (ntoskrnl.exe) and the other is UNEXEPECTED_KERNAL_MODE_TRAP (ntoskrnl.exe).I have this problem across 15 identical laptops with fresh installs of Win 7 Pro 64Now my guess is this will boil down to a BIOS upgrade, but if there are driver conflicts within these dump files

I've had a good look around google but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for - I'm kind of having trouble describing it. What I basically want to do is copy my entire installation of windows (all my files, settings, everything) onto my external hard drive so I can then install a fresh copy of windows on my build in HD, but I still want to be able to access the copy of windows I have put on my hard drive, as I can now. I'm kind of wanting to make two separate computers in a sense. Like when I start up my laptop I can choose if I want to boot from my fresh copy of windows or go to the copy of windows on my external HD.It's just my current copy of windows is filling up my hard drive and has just turned into an unorganised mess and I've got stuff in there that I need but I can't be bothered to sift through it all; there's too much

A recent thread on Sevenforums got me thinking. Why does Microsoft say in their license terms that you can't use an OEM license for personal use, but they sell it through third parties (Amazon and Newegg) and they know that ordinary people are going to buy these OEM copies. If Windows Activation goes through with it then it must be fine, right? Also, I kind of mentioned this already, but why would they sell it through third parties if they CLEARLY know that any average personcould come across it and buy it. It doesn't say anywhere on Amazon's product description page that I have to sell it to a third party.

In xp you could press ctrl and alt and drag a file or folder and it would duplicate it, I used to do this a lot. Now this suddenly doesnt work? Its now "move file" which to me is useless. Is there no shortcut to duplicate a file anymore? It seems annoying they just completely removed something. This feature also is in say photoshop for photoshop layers so its not exactly unheard of to justify just removing it!

I've just recently installed Windows 7 and have been getting random issues with my screen sometimes duplicating.
I've managed to get rid of it in the past few days with disabling a few things (I read elsewhere it was Windows gadgets causing the problem).
So I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue or had it and if so how did you fix it?

I performed a clean install of windows 7 ultimate x64 on a new hard drive and used windows easy transfer to carry along data such as photos and important documents from my previous 32-bit windows XP machine.
I used the Easy Transfer defaults for the file transfer, and transferred via a recently-reformatted external hard drive.
Here's the problem: I somehow ended up with an extra "Program Files" folder on my computer. The extra has some programs from the old machine in it and despite the merits (didn't have to reinstall world of warcraft as it runs fine from the old one), it's really beginning to irritate me! It contains non-working versions of office and a couple other games so I'd really like to clear it out.
Despite taking ownership, granting full control with the permissions, etc., I still get the message that I need permission to delete it. Only difference is now I need permission from myself instead of TrustedInstaller, despite the security tab saying that I have full control. I made sure the permissions were inherited to all the contents and even tried deleting individual components with no luck.
