Apr 24, 2011I have duplicate, identical folders that are appearing in my Homegroup screen on my laptop. They refer to actual directories on my desktop. How do I remove the copies?

View 3 RepliesI have a problem with my network folders for my dad's pc. His pc is what I primarily use to download software and such so I just network his folder so that I can gain access to downloaded files w/o going through other medias such as a flash drive etc.
Problem is that when a file is recently downloaded a lock appears on the file and is not accessible to other computers in the network, while my other computers have no problem similar to this . Also my dad's network folder has only 2 main folders that I have shared: My Documents and Downloads. But in the network folder there are around 7 copies of each folder, i.e. Downloads~1 - Downloads~7 all with the same contents and such and its cluttering the network folder . What do I do to repair this? I have tried unsharing the folder and sharing it again with no luck.
I have split my user profile onto a larger mirrored drive using a junction link. This works perfectly. However when viewing my personal folders I see multiple identical icons for favourites, links, my music etc. When I navigate to the actual area everything appears as it should be.If I try to delete one of these identical icons then both icons go to the recycle bin along with the files inside the relevant folder. Please see screen shot. I could recreate my profile and point the new profile at the relevant folders but setting up all my applications again will be a bit of a nightmare that I would like to avoid if possible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI created a .pst export so that I could copy my outlook information from my main computer to a new laptop. It was successful but made a duplicate personal and sub folders on the main computer only. Also on the outlook today page it doesn't make any counts for incoming messages or other countable folders. I can save the sub folder titles to it but it doesn't recognized and put a count in even though I check both areas or just one etc... If I go to the folder from the outlook today page the folder is empty but if I go to the folder from the navigation list I can see the messages and also a count. The notebook Outlook is working properly

However, the odd thing, to me anyway, is if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've placed two computers in a homegroup. Computer 1 can access Computer 2's shared folders, however, Computer 2 cannot access Computer 1's shared folders. When attempting to access the shared folders (with read/write permissions), I get the spinning wheel and then it just eventually says 1 item selected at the bottom of the explorer window and stops. The folders do not expand. They're on the same workgroup with no other computers, I read that they should be or something.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI found it somewhat difficult to completely Unshare files and folders on my HomeGroup Network and still allow Printer sharing in Windows 7 (Home Premium).
Initial UnSharing still allowed files like those below to be viewed on other home network computers:
C:/Users/
{user x} (folder)
AppData (folder)
Default (folder
Public (folder)
desktop.ini (file)
Other computers on the home network could step through many levels of hiarchy in the AppData folder and appeared to have "Delete" access!!
To completely decouple the computers, I had to go through the following several different Sharing/Unsharing assignment locations, till I could completely break the linkage.
I would appreciate any clarifications or simplifications.
File UnShare Confusion on HomeGroup Network
There are several different Network Sharing/Protection assignment locations in Windows 7.
To prevent all sharing between computers on the Homegroup Network, but allow Printer Sharing:
1) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options.
Uncheck sharing boxes that you don’t want to share. Save changes.
2) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options->Change advanced sharing settings.
Click “Turn off Public folder sharing (people logged on to this computer can still access these folders)”.
3) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options->Change advanced sharing settings.
Choose Media streaming options.
Click “Block All” button. Turn off. Click OK.
Anomaly Note: You have to close Control Panel and repeat all step 3 again for the change to take effect.
4) Open Windows Explorer.
a) Select “C:/”, select “Users” folder with single click, then click “Share with” in toolbar.
b) Select Advanced sharing.
Under Sharing tab, select Advanced Sharing. Uncheck box labeled “Share this folder”. Apply and close.
5) Open Windows Explorer.
Select “C:/Users/”, select all folders and files under "Users", then click “Share with” in toolbar, then click “Nobody”.
6) Verify success by going to other home network computer(s) and trying to access your files and folders. You should only be able to see there is a computer and not be able to see any folders of files.
The HomeGroup shares have been a recurring issue that I haven't been able to solve, but the really perplexing one is the shared folder issue which just cropped up. Some of my shared folders still work, but e, g and h (music and video respectively) for some reason spit back "Access Denied" on all of the other computers in my house, this is in spite of the fact that Permissions on them are set to Full Control for Everyone. With regards to HomeGroup shares, they simply don't show up no matter what I do, I'd like to fix that one too, but I'm not sure what I can do to fix that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two pc's in my home. One running windows 7 32 BIT, and one running Win 7 64 bit. I created a home group on the laptop, as I want to grab some files from the laptop and bring over to the Desktop unit (the desktop unit is the one running 64 BIT win 7). Both machines have different names and the clock is set with the right time. When I create the home group on my Laptop, and select files that I want to share, the basic libraries ARE viewable on the Desktop machine.
I can see Documents, Picture folders, but I cannot open them! I can also change the password on the Laptop, and then PC will be able to enter the correct password to join the homegroup, so I know they can see each other. But again, not able to open the folders. If I go on my Laptop computer and "right click" on a folder, and then go to "share with"... the default is set to "nobody" with a lock icon next to it. If I select "Homegroup" it does not change! It stays locked with "nobody"?
I have three computers all running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, one of which functions partly as a media center (hosting music etc), the second and third being my office workstation and laptop respectively. The media center has a hard line to my cable modem (via Trendnet wireless-N router) while the latter two connect via wireless; the workstation via a wireless ethernet hub and the laptop via it's integrated wireless.I currently have all of my media folders shared via homegroup on the media center.
My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad W500) can access all of the shared folders. My office workstation, while I can "see" the shared libraries/folders on my media center, hangs (the explorer window appears to be perpetually loading) whenever I attempt to open any of the folders. Sometimes when this happens I can kill/restart explorer but ever so often explorer itself will be unable to restart and I will have to reboot the entire machine.I have Windows Security Essentials running on both machines - all three are almost identical with respects to the installed software.I have tried reconfiguring the homegroup multiple times, flushing the dns cache, resetting and cycling the router, and have even swapped out wireless adapters (on the problematic workstation) to no avail.
I installed Windows 7 on my laptop, and I also have a desktop running Windows 7. I am trying to connect my laptop to my homegroup with the password for my homegroup, but my desktop will not reveal it. Is there any other place that I can find it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had a good look around google but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for - I'm kind of having trouble describing it. What I basically want to do is copy my entire installation of windows (all my files, settings, everything) onto my external hard drive so I can then install a fresh copy of windows on my build in HD, but I still want to be able to access the copy of windows I have put on my hard drive, as I can now. I'm kind of wanting to make two separate computers in a sense. Like when I start up my laptop I can choose if I want to boot from my fresh copy of windows or go to the copy of windows on my external HD.It's just my current copy of windows is filling up my hard drive and has just turned into an unorganised mess and I've got stuff in there that I need but I can't be bothered to sift through it all; there's too much

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn xp you could press ctrl and alt and drag a file or folder and it would duplicate it, I used to do this a lot. Now this suddenly doesnt work? Its now "move file" which to me is useless. Is there no shortcut to duplicate a file anymore? It seems annoying they just completely removed something. This feature also is in say photoshop for photoshop layers so its not exactly unheard of to justify just removing it!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just recently installed Windows 7 and have been getting random issues with my screen sometimes duplicating.
I've managed to get rid of it in the past few days with disabling a few things (I read elsewhere it was Windows gadgets causing the problem).
So I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue or had it and if so how did you fix it?
I performed a clean install of windows 7 ultimate x64 on a new hard drive and used windows easy transfer to carry along data such as photos and important documents from my previous 32-bit windows XP machine.
I used the Easy Transfer defaults for the file transfer, and transferred via a recently-reformatted external hard drive.
Here's the problem: I somehow ended up with an extra "Program Files" folder on my computer. The extra has some programs from the old machine in it and despite the merits (didn't have to reinstall world of warcraft as it runs fine from the old one), it's really beginning to irritate me! It contains non-working versions of office and a couple other games so I'd really like to clear it out.
Despite taking ownership, granting full control with the permissions, etc., I still get the message that I need permission to delete it. Only difference is now I need permission from myself instead of TrustedInstaller, despite the security tab saying that I have full control. I made sure the permissions were inherited to all the contents and even tried deleting individual components with no luck.
We have installed new computers quad processors with windows 7 (Dont know if 32 or 64 bit)Anyhow, Microsoft 2010 came with these machines and we are having real problems with Outlook. in the Task Manager the process is duplicating maybe 3 or more times and sometimes the process is showing over 300,000kNow when I end the processeses from the task manager two of them will end and always one that will not and says access denied! this is usually the largest process. This is happening on two different machines.

What put me on doubt even more is thati saw files bot located in c program data and in c users so I want to ask if its normal to have them simultaneusly in thse locations?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have numerous desktop icons (shortcuts, recycle bin, my documents folder) that I cannot delete. These icons are duplicates of the normal active icons that are either on my desktop or in the taskbar. The "unusable" icons aren't even recognized as being icons (so that if I right click on the desktop and select view and uncheck "show desktop icons", these icons remain). The icons cannot be selected (either right or left clicked), they cannot be moved, they do not highlight when moused over. Any suggestions on how to remove these? I've tried refreshing the desktop, rebooting several times, etc. They do not show up in the desktop folder within c:\users\<your user name>\desktop folder or the public desktop folder either.
