I click on Start go to Computer, Right Click then left click on Device Manager. Then nothing happens, huh? I try it again the look at my system and the CPU light blinks a few but not long and still nothing. I put the icon on the desktop and do the same thing, nothing. I type in Device Manager then it bring it up. It works that way but the shortcut is broken that is in the system.

Currently to switch between devices I have to go to control panel, sound, and then change the playback device. I am hoping to find a way to make 2 shortcuts on my desktop to change my playback devices. One shortcut for each of my devices, where I can open the shortcut and the default device will be changed. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I encountered a problem today with scanning using the printer (Printing was alright). I can only remember vaguely as I thought it some kind of connection error, I was using a USB cable and it was working find earlier. Spent hours googling to no avail, so I decided to use System Restore to restore to yesterday where it was working perfectly. So when the laptop started the process through -Control Panel> Recovery> Open system restore it logged out and everything, but hung at initializing for about 40 minutes, I googled that with another laptop and 99% of them said I should turn on my laptop with the button, then try the System Restore in the boot options when choosing the Repair Computer option. Guess what! That also didn't work. Well I started windows normally after the second power off, turned on without any problems, but then realized in the taskbar it shows the Ethernet wire connection for internet where I am connected wirelessly, I check my network adapters through Network & Sharing centre and the adapters are missing. I start panicking and instantly check device manager, its blank (Plug and Play is on). At that point I'm pissed off when I remember that when I started the laptop again, ATI gave me a message that no drivers were found. Have all my drivers been deleted?If my network adapters are missing,how am I connecting to the net? I also checked msconfig, tried a clean boot (Hopeless), but also noticed many Microsoft services are stopped. I just tried to scan again now to get an error message but the printer was not found, I figured this was from deleted devices?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've discovered three problems with this laptop and think they all might be related? Windows Update not working with error 0x80070057 - I have searched the internet for help on this and tried suggestions like; starting/stopping wuauserv service, deleting WinUpd cache. System Restore not working; unable to create restore points or restore (the last point is from November), this gives error 0x81000101 Shadow Copy Timeout. Again searched and tried fixing all suggestions like making sure the SysRestore services are running. Device Manager is completely blank; also tried suggested repairs like setting correct permissions on Enum folder in registry. On top of the problem specific fix attempts I've also done the following general fixes: sfc /scannow - found problems but unable to fix repaired registry from RegBack reset all Services to default ran combofix and malwarebytes chkdsk /r removed McAfee have checked Windows & Sytem32 folder for correct user permissions I'm sure I've done a few other things but can't recall everything I've tried.Have also tried Windows Repair but stays at "Checking Compatibilty" for hours.Generally Windows seems to be fine except for these three issues; system is quick and general useage is without issues.

I've just bought a new PC which has Windows 7 installed so just finding my way about! My old PC was running XP and all my program shortcuts in the Quick Launch Toolbar had relevant icons on them. However, although some shortcuts I've put on my 7 QLT have appeared with the relevant icons, for instance FF and TB, 3 other programmes have just come up as blank cream coloured folders. So is there a way to get the proper icons instead of the blanks?

It was really convenient because I could keep all my casual "play" bookmarks in the browser itself, and important sites for things like banking and online bills were accessed from a special corner of my desktop. I've since built a new computer and I don't remember how I did it before. My primary browser is Chrome and I can't find a way to save bookmarks to the desktop. What I've been forced to do is right click on the desktop, go in "New" and then select "Shortcut", and then just put the website's URL. It works but the icon pictures are all wrong. On my last comp each website had a proper icon (Bank of Montreal had the BMO logo, Videotron had the Videotron logo, etc).

I just changed the default install location for programs by getting to regedit->currentversion->programfilesdir and programfilesdir(x86), but now when I try to pin anything to the taskbar it defaults the pathing to the SSD. And the program's not there, so it doesn't work. Am I going to have to manually relabel everything or is there a way to change this?

Oh and is it appropriate for me to use this topic to ask another question regarding explorer.exe as while i am inside a folder i delete (by choosing delete from the context menu in the tree view) while inside that folder on this particular laptop PC explorer. always crashes, collect information, sends it and restarts explorer. I have not experienced this problem on any other pc running any version of windows 7, oh and the same happened with build 7264 x32 and the current install of build 7600 x64.
Have recently purchased a small usb inspection snake camera with led light and when testing it plugged it into two desktops computers (one xp pro not sure of the other as it was a network work computer) It automatically loaded the drivers and brought up a screen automatically with the realtime image.(no driver disc came with it). However plugging into my windows 7 64bit sony laptop it signals a connection beep, loaded drivers automatically but wouldn't open or show up on my computer disc manager as an external usb source to click on. It does however show up on device manager as a usb camera and when I unplug and replug in it disappears and reappears so I know I have the right camera (not the lap top webcam inbuilt one that shows USB 2 Camera). Have tried updating drivers automatically and uninstalling it etc. Need it to work on the lap top so it can act as the movable screen for it?

i cant install nvidia drivers " this graphics driver could not find compatible graphic hardware", and i can't see my nvidia card on the device manager, and can't get the hardware ID, it looks like my laptop doesn't have this graphic card installed.

When I disable the network controller in Device Manager, the controller is disabled but nothing changes in Device Manager to identify the device as being disabled. When I used to do the same thing in Windows XP, the device icon turned yellow. Is there some setting to identify disabled devices in Win 7's Device Manager?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy issue is that i would like to be able to have media center audio play only through my tv and not through my pc main speaker system, tv is hooked through hdmi output on graphics card, speaker system through 5.1 output on motherboard. I have tried the audiorenderupdater extender but all that does is set default audio out for entire system, so when itunes is used or game is played on computer audio goes through tv. I would like all system noises, media player, and game audio to run through pc speakers and simultaneously all media center audio (recorded/live tv) to go through tv audio, so i can watch sports center while playing mass effect and have audio from sportscenter on tv audio from mass effect on pc speakers.
Also is there a way to separate media player's actions from media center's. For example if you are laying music in media player and then open media center and play a tv show, music playback stops, not a big deal just like media player better than itunes and would like to be able to watch tv in media center while playing music in media player rather than itunes

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I start up Windows, I have two options, "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)", and only the second one works. This is annoying because it defaults to the first entry.Some background info: I added a second hard drive to my laptop, and I used an Ubuntu install disc to move Windows 7 to the second hard drive and install Ubuntu to the first (larger) hard drive. When I start up my computer, the Grub boot loader gives me an option between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7.When I first tried to boot into Windows, it had problems (caused by finding itself on a new drive I assume) and attempted to do startup repair which didn't change anything. It had detected a Windows 7 installed on drive "E", attempted repair, but on reboot I got to the same place. Next I used the Windows 7 Repair disc that I had burned earlier, which appeared to do the exact same process of attempting startup repair, however this time when I rebooted I got the option between "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)". The first option causes it to do what it did before, and the second option gets me into Windows 7 fine. Windows still sees its hard drive as "C" which is good.While looking for solutions to this, I found the bcdedit utility. I attempted to rename "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)" to just "Windows 7 Home Premium" to test whether it changed anything, but when I boot up I still get "Windows 7" and "Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)". I don't even know where the "Windows 7" entry comes from.

my Internet explorer 7 has been totally deleted and I think this is most of my problem with my other programs. My device manager wont work at all, the error msg says that it will not work on any Internet exp. earlier than 5.5. So I need to reinstall IE7? I have an acer aspire 5610z and i know it is not compatable with windows 7 according to acer but everything works apart from the audio!when i go onto device manager there is no audio tab but when i go to system> there is a "high definition audio controller" which i have been trying to install the audio drivers to because the usual audio device is not there in device manager.I have done a fresh install and updated the majority of the drivers but i cannot find the audio one anywhere ive tried downloading the vista one and running it in compatibility mode and it is a realtek one that is reccomended.
