DVD Drive Not Listed Option In Windows 7 Recovery?
Jul 8, 2012
My wife's nephew picked up a virus that Avast had flagged as newgeneration.com/x/x and oldschoolzz.com/x/. I have ran Malwarebytes, SuperAnti Spyware, and quarantined trojans that were found several times (also tried it in safe mode). They keep coming back so I was going to do a system recovery with the discs that I had burned when she first got her computer. The problem is that when I get to the screen to select the dvd drive nothing is populating that box to select.

I had two hdd's in my computer and decided to remove one as I did not really need it and figured it save some power, after removing secondary hard drive which was just being used as storage i received the " MBR Error 1" after about 2 hours researching, I found I could repair it from windows cd, only problem is I only have a live usb version of it and when I try to launch system recovery the operating system is not listed and I have to load drivers for the hard disk. I really do not want to wipe and reinstall windows as its only been 2 weeks since i built the system and also I have a game which is 25gb digital download installed on it but it deletes the installation files after installing it and reinstalling would mean re-installing.
I guess I have 2 questions:
1. Is there anyway to copy a liveusb onto a disk ? for example, make an iso of a usb drive and burn it to dvd?
2. What drivers would I have to load on the windows startup recovery to get it to see the operating system
Below are my system specifications:
MOBO: Asus sabertooth z77
RAM: gskill ripjaws 8gb (2 x 4gb)
CPU: Intel i5-2500k
GRAPHICS: Zotac geforce gtc 580 3gb
HDD: WD caviar blue 500gb
OS: Windows 7 ultimate SP1 64 bit

I have a Crucial M4 SSD that I'm running windows on and another hard drive I store other files and programs on, lately I've been having problems with windows crashing and upon restarting, my computer will automatically attempt to boot from the other hard drive unless I physically unplug it and the M4 is the only drive plugged in (when I select boot priority in BIOS the SSD is not a listed option to boot to.) Then if I do unplug the other HD and start windows from the SSD, I'm having problems with windows crashing, a couple times I got a blue screen that stated windows crashed and it shut down to save data. I'm not sure if this SSD is taking a dump on me or if I have a problem with windows?

I've just used the windows 7 utility on my hp station pc which is called "restore to factory" and this seems like went smoothly, but when I try to reboot the pc, and after the "preparing pc for first use" there's a text box popping up witch says "could not complete installation of windows, to install windows on this computer, restart the installation" and then the system reboots again, and it all starts over. I dont know how to restart the installation, and I don't have any cd/dvd or usb, tried to download the windows 7 usb/dvd download tool, but as a first step it is requested a .iso file which I don't have, and don't know where to find..

The start up repair can't fix it and I noticed that in system recovery option, the operating system says" Windows 7 on (D Local Disk" does that mean the windows directory transferred to Local Disk D? And another thing is that I can't boot the pc in cd/dvd, when i click f8 and click the CD rom the message" press any key" won't show?

I have a computer with the F10 option when I first turn on the computer. The hard drive failed so I have replaced it and installed windows 7. I am wondering if I can create a recovery partition when I turn on the computer and use the F10 option to restore back to when I first installed windows 7?

Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop, Trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium (5.8GB) to my (10GB) hard drive, It's listed as Primary drive in BIOS, but when I go to install Windows 7, It doesn't list it in the list of Drives!
The hard drive is working fine, and obviously connected and executed properly, if it's configured correctly in the BIOS.

I have a brand new Windows 7 64bit build with a clean install from an Upgrade CD and noticed in BIOS that my 1st boot device must be "Windows Boot Manager" or it asks for the CD. I only have 1 storage device (SSD) in the system and when I look under Disk Management in windows, it shows a 100MB "EFI System Partition" in addition to the primary partition (which is labeled "Boot, Crash Dump, and Primary Partition" - so it seems to have the boot files on it).
My components are:
Intel i5 3570K
Gigabyte Z77-DS3H mainboard
16GB Crucial Ballistix
Intel 520 180GB SSD
LG BD optical drive
GTX 560ti
As I only have the one non-optical storage device I did not set any partition parameters at install. I Attempted to do a Startup Repair with the windows disc to maybe try and delete the EFI partition and got the "... System Recovery Options is incompatible with the version you are trying to repair" error. Not sure what that is. If Disk Management shows a healthy partition with "Boot" listed as being contained, why can I not select the SSD as boot device #1? I can boot perfectly fine with the Windows Boot Manager listed as boot device #1 and the SSD as #2, however it's not ideal.

I am running windows 7 home 64 bit (build 7600). I have a gateway fx7026. It has two internal hard drives. When I look under device manager they are both listed and they are both listed under the bios menu. When I look in my computer though under hard disk drives it only shows the one that I have the OS on. When I had Vista it showed both of them. Is this something I should be worried about. The drives are listed as WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 1 and WDC WD3200AAJS-22B4A0 DRIVE 0.

I have a Lexan dual-slot card reader that I use for downloading my photo's to my computer. I've had this for over a year and since I installed it, I would always see the drive letters listed in Explorer.Recently, I tried to download some pictures and when I went to click on the drive letter to open the folder on my card, the drive letter was not visible.I must note that they show up as drives when I go into the Disk Management utility. This is becoming a source of frustration and I need to know why this has randomly happened and how to rectify the problem. I really do need to see them listed as drives.

I have 2 hard drives in the same computer, each with its own instance of Windows 7. I must keep these files separate from each other for security reasons - the problem is that each instance of Windows automatically reads the data from the other hard drive.
I am aware that usually the way to fix this is to select the hard drive and click 'Disable' (works fine on one hard drive) - but the other hard drive does not have this option. Is there any other way I can get Windows 7 to completely ignore/disable/uninstall a hard drive? Note that simply clicking 'Uninstall' does not work, since it automatically reinstall itself on reboot.
To sum up:
- 'Disable button' does not exist.
- 'Uninstall' button is useless, since it reinstall on reboot.

I decided to do a system recovery for my laptop. I've already done a couple of experiments before and from what I remember the first time I done a system recovery, the partition where my personal files where saved did not get deleted. The only thing that was "system recovered" was the partition where the OS was located. Yesterday, I again decided to do a recovery but this time, the partition where I have my files got deleted and the space it had "returned" to the OS partition. Orignally, I shrunk the OS partition so that I can have space for my partition for my personal files. If it helps, I've done a "system recovery" but saw one of it has a "mini system recovery" option. What is the difference?

My HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.

I have Acer Extensa 5230E, with Celeron 900. the CPU can't handle most of the flash so I am thinking about replacing Win 7 with Win XP. (Q1. Is it better to use XP than 7 in this lappy?)I tried to make recovery DVD but don't have much success. So I am thinking about partitioning the hard-drive then save a recovery copy in the partitioned drive. Is there an option that I can do so? How do I install the win 7 from partitioned drive?

My 160 GB Win7 drive on my laptop failed (single partition), but thankfully I had a backup that I created on a 750 GB drive using EASUS Partition Master COPY. The backup drive is FULLY BOOTABLE, I've been booting into Windows 7 from an eSata external interface with no issues. It has a partition with my backed up Win7 installation and the rest is just unallocated space.

I just turned on my laptop on and it wouldnt go past the "starting windows" logo. So I restarted my computer and it gave me an option to repair start up option and once the repair finished it said it has failed to solve the issue and it pop up a Windows System Recovery which is always good if I wanted to restore it to the factory state unfortunately I have about 30 GB more or less data on this laptop that is basically my life and wanted to retrieve the data.
It also gave me an option for command prompt so i went and run "chkdsk" it got to 49% and from there it kept on listing the entries on the disk and numbers that its got errors on, I didn't quiet finished the disk check and turned my laptop off. Reason being it was 4 AM in the morning. I have been using my laptop for over 2-3 years and by use I mean it has been online almost 80% of the time more or less.
Is it hard drive failure? If so is there a way I could retrieve any data from it? I know there are software that you can boot from CD or USB to salvage what ever data is left or readable, however the data is somewhat precious to me and dont want to do further damage. I would have gone to an professional and gave it to them but I can't afford it. I'm going to change the hard drive into a different laptop to check if its truely an hard drive problem related.

I recieved a Dell Insipron 1545 about a year and a half ago, with windows 7 pre-installed on it. Unfortunate circumstances have led me to have to reinstall windows 7 on my laptop. When I did (With the installation disks that came with my laptop) It kept sending me notifications that my recovery drive was full, and everything I tried to save would automatically attempt to save on the recovery drive and fail. Thus my laptop is almost useless because I can't reinstall any of my programs, games or transfer my pictures, videos and documents back onto it.
I was promted to try and reinstall again, but this time specify that is be saved in the OS drive, not the recovery drive. I did this and it only led to the exact same results.
