Over the last couple of days my computer randomly freezes and i have to force reboot it happens at random. So I checked the event viewer and it said The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

So i have open DNS setup on my home router which is connected to my Verizon router (piece of crap) which i also have running open DNS. I run open dns for security and for filtering i have several teenagers in the house and i need to filter content. The only problem is that they can bypass the DNS server settings by setting them manually on there computer Start > Control panel > network and sharing > adapter setting > left click on adapter > properties > IPV4 properties and then change the DNS. I was wondering if there was a way to make it so this trick does not work? I have tried everything i know to do. I have set the open DNS, as the DNS server on every connection on my Verizon router and on my linksys router but it can still be bypassed.

I will enclose a screenshot of it. If it has any relation to the icons not showing up on my pictures,

I have some workstations set up to log in automatically on startup. Users of these workstations might also want to log in using their own domain credentials.
I want users to be able to log off and log in using their own credentials. I would also like for the system to log in automatically after a set period of time following a logoff.
Is there some option in Windows that can set the system to log in automatically after a period of inactivity at the logon screen?

I used the upgrade process in Windows 7 to go to Windows 7 from Vista. Everything works well except when I try to sleep (close the lid on laptop) or logoff. The system freezes sometimes and I have to force the system down with a power off.
It appears that the first attempt usually works. The next logoff/sleep is when the problem appears.
I have removed all third party software and the problem still occurs.
I updated to latest bios from Compaq for CQ70-134CA Laptop. No luck.
I changed the Power Plan to disable the sleep mode when the lid is closed. The system still freezes when the system goes into sleep mode after the set timeout.
I changed the Power Plan so that the hard drive does not go in power saving mode. Finally the system is stable but never goes into sleep mode.
Does anyone out there think that the hard disk going into Power Saving mode is the cause of this problem?
Any ideas out there?

Currently when I add the restart.bat (shutdown -r -f -t 0) into gpedit.msc -> User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Scripts -> Logoff, there is like a 20 seconds delay. So the student would click logoff and then it would show the login screen for ~20 seconds before restarting. The ~20 seconds is problematic when another student types in her account credentials and starts logging in, only to have the computer restart in the the middle of the profile loading.
These computer are Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit on windows domain environment. CPU is QuadCore, with no programs running. I have no control over the domain stuff, only able to bind computers to the domain.

Just wondering if anyone has come across this before.as part of our logoff script we run a backup application to backup users data to the network. In XP we never had a problem, in Windows 7 a few power users have come across a problem. If they have lots of data that's changed, when the script runs (runs an application called SyncbackSE), while it runs fine, if it gets to 10 minutes and it is still running, then windows (I'm presuming it's windows doing this) just stops it running and finishes the logging off of the user without finishing the back. Is there somewhere that this can checked/set?

I woke up this morning to find my computer was frozen. So I forced it to restart by holding down the power button. Once it was booting back up I walked away from my pc for an hour and when I came back it just has a message saying "Cleaning up... Do not turn off your computer." It has been like this for over 4 hours. What causes my pc to go through this cleaning up phase and how long does it take? Also is it safe to restart my pc at any point if this takes way to long?

I successfully increased the size of my partition (from 24,36GB to 34,18GB) and restored my image again.
Windows 7 is up and running again, though the amount of space left, is still identical as it was before increasing the partition.
Windows Computer management shows (graphically) the new size (now 34.18GB) where in the same screen, just above the graphical presentation, the old partition size is shown (24,36GB). The latter is also show if I use explorer.

My computer has been acting strange upon start up. It takes a little longer than usuall to show my accounts and once I click them it also takes a bit longer. When the home screen finally comes on its a gray screen. This screen lasts for almost 30 seconds. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

After a while it started freezing all the time so I decided to clean it up. It had tons of dust that I removed and I even applied thermal paste MX3 to the processor. Everything went well for a few months but now the freezing has restarted. Basically, I turn it on and it freezes while doing small stuff like opening firefox or steam whithin a minutes.
Normally the screen goes black but the lights in the tower stay on and the fans keep working. I have to manually reboot and then it just works normally with no more freezings. This is a temperature scan that I made just before one of the freezes:Sometimes a blue screen appears and the following error is issued:Assinatura do problema:Nome do Evento de Problema: BlueScreenVerso do SO: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3ID de Regio: 2070Informaes adicionais sobre o problema:BCCode: 116BCP1: FFFFFA8003DF94E0BCP2: FFFFF88003A93408BCP3: 0000000000000000BCP4: 0000000000000002OS Version: 6_1_7601Service Pack: 1_0Product: 768_1I have all the lastest drivers installed.

I have a Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive (External).I use it 99.9% of the time on my Windows 7 64bit computer to store pictures/videos and backup important files. It was working fine until I plugged it into a MACINTRASH to backup files from that computer. It was a simple copy and paste from the MACINTRASH to the External HDD.After copying the files from the MACINTRASH, I plugged it back into my PC.My PC no longer recognizes my external HDD. I unplugged the power, plugged it back in.Same with the USB cable. Rebooted. Then my computer wouldn't reboot and windows did its automatic self repair. Nothing.I unplugged EVERYTHING and left it that way for about 30 minutes. I plugged EVERYTHING back to my computer and turned it on.
Windows booted up fine. I plugged in the external HDD and windows had that little icon telling me it was installing drivers. I was excited to think that it finally would recognize my external HDD.Of course, it didn't work. The HDD does not show up in my computer. It does show up in Device Manager and Disk ManagementDevice MangerUnder Disk Drives it lists it only as "WD" My other drives it has a nice long name like "WD 7500AAK External USB Device" Under properties it tells me Volume information for the disk cannot be found. (The very first time I did that prior to the reboot it said there was 0MB of space on it). It claims the device is working properly Disk ManagementAt first this said that I must initialize my disk. Now it doesn't even show up anymore. I have no idea what to do anymore.

I am trying to strip Windows 7 of every single screen and message before login... and before shutdown.
So we've got:
- Boot sequence
- Logon screen
- Preparation to Logon
- Preparation to Shutdown
Boot sequence was easy to completely black out, by using [URL](black background, all messages removed)
Logon screen can be skipped without hacks, just a matter of having no password.
Now I'm left with the Logon ("Preparing your desktop...", "Applying user preferences", "Welcome"... etc.) and the Shutdown ("Shutting down..." etc.) screens and messages.
Is there a way to completely disable both?
If there isn't, I am thinking of a hack: both are made by a background (which you can change with custom graphics by putting them into the OOBE folder and a couple registry keys). Then, there are text messages which are contained somewhere and can be emptied by using ResourceHacker (I found some of them but not all). Finally, somewhere within some exe or dll, there should be the "working" circle of light and the Windows 7 logo, which are superimposed to the custom background. I am attaching a picture for clarity.

I'm just setting up a new Win7 Professional system, and I want to encrypt a partition on the hard-disk with TrueCrypt to store certain stuff including the data directory for MySQL.
However, the MySQL service would probably start before I'm logged-in and therefore throw a fit if the data dir isn't mounted yet. Likewise, I can't be sure MySQL will stop before the Truecrypt volume is dismounted at logoff/shutdown.
Is there any way I can make MySQL wait for the Truecrypt volume to be mounted after logon, and then stop it at logoff before Truecrypt dismounts? It seems it might be possible using Group Policy, but as I come from XP Home I've no experience of this tool.
PS - Just to make things more complicated, I'll mostly be logging in as a Standard User, so the solution has to work whoever logs in.
Not asking much eh?

I don't know why this is happening but all of a sudden my windows 7 keeps playing the logon and logoff sounds back to back and constantly. I've rebooted my computer to no avail. I tried running a bunch of "Microsoft Fixit" tools and nothing works. Some recent changes to my system include the following:I recently cleared the CMOS RTC RAM data in order to reset the BIOS password.(Don't know if that could cause the type of problem I'm having now, but if it is, there's no indication of it in Action center and as I mentioned, trouble-shooting tools don't show any problems.)

I have two Dell laptops, both running Windows 7. I have both set up on a HomeGroup and have enabled media sharing on both as well. Network discovery is turned on for both, file and printer sharing is on, password protected sharing is off. Under WMP, I have Media Streaming on. None of my folders are hidden.
For this discussion, things with Laptop A are fine, but Laptop B is causing me some problems. I have two main issues and fear they may be related: 1. From Laptop B, I can see Laptop A in the homegroup and I can see it in WMP. I can access all of Laptop A's files and play them back with no problem. However, from Laptop A, I can see Laptop B in the Homegroup, but I can not see it in WMP. I can navigate to certain folders in explorer and see the files, but I can not play them, even though I have all sharing functions that I can think of turned on. (I do have McAfee running, but disabled the firewall in case that was the problem. It didn't help)
Also, I have a DLNA compliant device on the network that I can stream music to using the "play to" feature in WMP. From Laptop A I can play to the network speaker just fine. I can not from Laptop B. I should add that I can "see" the device in WMP from Laptop B, but when I queue a track to play, it just hangs up as if it can't communicate any further with the networked speaker.
