I'm trying to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I boot from my CD drive, Windows loads the files and then the blue background comes up but there is nothing to click on.Basically I get to step 3 here but have nothing to click on to continue. Clean Install Windows 7
View 1 RepliesI purchased an Inspiron 15R today and wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7 right out of the box. I'm using a Windows 7 disk from another machine.I formatted the drive and all of it's partitions (recovery etc.) and installed the OS. After booting though I get sent to an error screen that tells me Windows had an error starting up and that I should choose a way to startup with the usual safe mode etc. No matter what I choose it sends me to this screen. So I booted from the disk again to attempt to format and reinstall, but now I have no disk drives to install to.
I have run a diagnostics check and nothing seems to be wrong, the HDD is still being recognized in the BIOS. What can I do to get my HDD back and showing up in the install destination options?
YOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. There is no upgrade path. There are user migration tools you can use, but you will need to backup your files and do a clean install. I have seen several threads about this and just want to clarify. The upgrade from Windows Vista is a valid upgrade path, but Windows XP to Windows 7 is not.

question: how do I backup all critical data to the secondary hard drive before doing a clean install on the primary drive? and then how do I reinstall the data from the secondary drive back to the primary hard drive with the new Win 7 64 bit system on it?

However, I am trying to figure out how I would migrate just my critical OS files over to the SSD without doing a clean install of Windows 7. Any working programs or workarounds to do this? I had this exact version of windows on another hard drive but I did something and now I can't boot into it any more. So I want to transfer all my files and stuff - I can link up and view everything on my old hard drive, it just won't boot - is there any software or any easy way to transfer my program files so that I don't have to reinstall them all? Also, I'm not sure how to transfer all my windows settings - is it just a file somewhere that I copy across? I've had a look at 'windows easy transfer' but it looks like it only works if you can boot into both operating systems - which I can't.

It continually reboots regardless of what type of start up I select (ie. safe mode, sade mode with command prompt, last known good setting, etc.).I recently scanned my desktop computer and received an HD521-2W SMART error. After doing a little research, I figured that there's pretty much nothing I can do and the hard drive is on its final stretch. However, what are my options of recovering my data on the dying harddrive ? (keeping in mind that I can no longer boot properly to the login screen). The files I want to recover are mostly photos, a few word files, and bookmarks.

I'm guessing it's a virus (stupidly, I haven't installed an AVP on this machine yet). Anyways, I can't open anything. Doesn't matter where I try to open the program or file from. The load icon appears but nothing happens. I also can't access the task manager or shut down/log off/etc. from the start menu, I get a "Failure to display security and shut down options" error msg. I'm in safe mode with networking right now, which is allowing me to open programs. I've already tried a system restore but it didn't solve the problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a re-install of all components following a complete corruption of the boot sector on my drive which could not be fixed with repairs. The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs. I keep getting an error along the following lines: Quote: ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Windows 7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.
Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.I have referenced this thread here, but offered solutions do not seem to work for me: Intel IDT Audio Driver will not install
Does anyone know whether there is a difference in performance between doing a clean install of Windows 7 vs upgrading Vista? Any better stability? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the trouble of the clean install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedLong before I bought Windows 7 I was running XP on a dual boot with Ubuntu, I then removed Ubuntu from computer but was still left with the boot option which I successfully removed. I then installed Win 7 as a dual boot with XP and once I was happy with 7 decided to remove XP just leaving 7. As soon as I did so for some reason the Ubuntu option returned to my boot menu. I have tried lots to remove this option but to no avail. The option does not appear on easybcd but seems to be a remnant of XP left in the now useless boot.ini file. I am able to access the boot.ini file using "run" but when I try to edit the Ubuntu option out access is denied. I know I have to change permissions to edit this file but have no idea of it's location and a search returns no results.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway T-1625 laptop. it has 2 gb of ram, 500 gb hdd, and an amd turion 64x2 processor. It came with win vista and am trying to upgrade to win7. I ran the disk, everything seemed to go fine, all the way up to setting the time and date. After the restart, it goes to "System Recovery Options" and asks for language. Next screen says "select an operating system to repair and click next. Only win vista operating systems are listed and can be repaired". My problem now is only win7 is listed. My options are to load drivers or next. I have read in a few places to load drivers, but i read them after trying to install win 7. I don't know where to look for drivers if that might be the case. If i click next, i get the "choose a recovery tool" and it states the operating system is win7 located on (C Local Disk. I have tried the startup recovery several times to no avail. When i look at the details, there are 10 problem signatures. The ones that look odd to me are the "Signature 1 SystemDisk" and "Signature 6 OsVersionMismatch". Like most idiots, i thought i could handle a simple installation and didn't bother to look for tips before hand, and now it's costing me.

If I preorder Windows 7 Professional upgrade ($99) will I be able to do a clean install on a partition of my choice or will it force me to clean install over my existing Vista Ultimate partition ?? I noticed Adobe Acrobat has saved a huge cache of files in a temporary folder that - when I try to locate the folder under Windows using the exact same path, it doesn't exist. After installation I tried to import some pictures off of my sd card using the card reader on my laptop. previous to the lexmark software install I had several options for importing the picture, I usually chose "import using windows". Now that option is gone along with all other options (that I rarely used) and it has been replaced with the lexmark productivity center. I looked at my autoplay options and all the old options are still there for importing videos, but pictures have only productivity studio and general options.So I uninstalled the software and rebooted, the productivity option is gone, but the old ones have not returned.Lastly I tried to do a system restore, but it hangs up on initializing for hours and never completes.Any ideas on how to get my old autoplay options back? I assume it is a registry setting.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'am using windows 7 ultimate 64b, google chrome and kaspersky internet security 2012 and when I save an application file, I cant open the file and it is followed by win msg saying ''Windows cannot find (file pathway). Make sure you typed the file name correctly, and then try again''. When I go to downloads in chrome, the 'attempts' are still there and allow me to try and download them again but with the same error msg. I'am sure this must be a security setting in either windows, internet security or the browser itself (least likely in my inexperienced opinion). Also if this helps, it allowed me to download and open a picture file and a video file from a newly saved file destination no problem. changing the file destination doesn't seem to make any differences to saving an application file either.

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.12 Ghz
nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX 512 MB PCI-e
320 GB Western Digital HD SATA
1 Gb DDR2 1066 MHz and 2x2Gb DDR2 1066 MHz SDRAM
I set my boot sequence to boot from DVD-ROM drive first, and HD second. It goes to the "Windows is loading files" screen and gets hung up. I started the process and went to watch TV for an hour, and it is still on the "Windows is loading files" screen. I haven't gotten any error messages. I've unplugged all USB devices from my computer as I have seen on this forum that it has worked for some people.
edited to add: I originally had only 2 Gb of RAM, and it got hung up at the "Windows is loading files" screen. I thought it was getting hung up because I didn't have enough RAM, so I bought brand new 2 sticks of 2 Gb RAM. I took out one of the 1 Gb sticks and placed both of the 2 Gb of RAM...for a total of 5 Gigs. And, it is still doing the same thing.
I tried installling windows 7 over a windows 8 installation,because I couldn't get win 8 to boot up without the disc in the drive. But it doesn't load the normal way, showing you the partitions and then after you pick one you get the " press any key to continue" then it finishes. It's an Hitachi desk star HD. I used to format it by hooking it up as a slave to my other desktop but it's not working. Is there a disk that I could run to clean the residual files off the HD so I can reinstall Win
