I'm considering going from vista to windows 7 (32 bit to 64 bit which I have checked is possible on my laptop).However, I have a couple of programmes on my current laptop which I have lost the disks for (e.g Microsoft Money) or I bought and downloaded from the site e.g recovery software.Given I need to do a clean install, is there anyway of me being able to backup these programmes and then reinstall with windows 7?
View 6 RepliesYOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. There is no upgrade path. There are user migration tools you can use, but you will need to backup your files and do a clean install. I have seen several threads about this and just want to clarify. The upgrade from Windows Vista is a valid upgrade path, but Windows XP to Windows 7 is not.

My 350 gig HD has 7 partitions. C: is Vista (186 GB) D: (87GB) is HP factory image. The others have most of my programs, files, photos, etc. I have avoided installing most of the larger important programs on C: and they are on other partitions. I plan a clean install of 7 upgrade on C: (also considering 64 bit as my comp qualifies). By "clean" I assume that you and I both mean that partition C: has been formatted prior to inserting the 7 DVD to begin installation.
First, am I correct with this assumption? Second, if only C: is going to be affected by the formatting and installation of 7 is there any mandatory reason to backup all of my programs and files that reside on the other partitions? (other than just being prudent, that is). Also, how much can I reduce the size of C:, as it currently has 132GB free? I also intend to empty D: when this is over.

I consider myself very knowledgeable about computers but I'm not sure if there is a utility for what I want to do. My parents computer is having some issues I replaced the hard drive and i used Acronis True Image to copy the hard drive so they wouldn't have to redo all there bookmarks and personal info for there websites and just the general windows settings like wallpaper etc. So since i have done this something just isn't quite right something must of been corrupted from the old hard drive. So anyways I am gonna do a clean install and i was wondering if there is a utility that will allow me to save everyones profiles so that i can just pop in a disk and restore all the settings. I am not worried about any files or programs on the computer I have them all backed up my only concern is windows settings themselves.I just can't figure out how to do this if there even is a way to backup everyones profile settings.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'd like to create a backup image of a clean install of Windows + certain applications.My plan is this: Format my SSD that I am currently using. Install fresh windows 7, do all the updates, install a few choice applications, and then get an image of it to use for recovery. I have a few questions on this topic as well:
1. This is probably obvious, but I want to make sure; I can store the image wherever I like, correct? If I am using an SSD for my boot drive, I can image that, and store the image on a regular hard drive, right?
2. How big will the image be? Is it going to be as big as the entire drive that I back up? I cannot imagine how it would go any differently, but I am hoping for some unrealized magic.
3. Do I need to buy the Ghost software? If not, does it make imaging a whole lot easier to make it worth the price tag?
4. How arduous and time consuming is the actual recovery process?
p.s. Something I just thought of. I don't know how I would do the actual backup without an OS to interface with so maybe I could make the image contain everything except the basic install of windows to cut down on space and time. Is this feasible?
I upgraded from Vista. I chose the 2nd option that I thought was a clean install. However after the install I still had all my files and folders on the C: drive. Did I not get a clean install?

I had this exact version of windows on another hard drive but I did something and now I can't boot into it any more. So I want to transfer all my files and stuff - I can link up and view everything on my old hard drive, it just won't boot - is there any software or any easy way to transfer my program files so that I don't have to reinstall them all? Also, I'm not sure how to transfer all my windows settings - is it just a file somewhere that I copy across? I've had a look at 'windows easy transfer' but it looks like it only works if you can boot into both operating systems - which I can't.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a new Toshiba 1tb HDD. My old WD 1tb HDD has been giving me trouble of late. I occasionally get the BSOD. Also, on occasion, when I reboot the computer it automatically runs the chkdsk program and reports several bad clusters. However the chkdsk program never seems to flag the bad clusters, so periodically, when I reboot, it runs and reports them again.
I would like to image or backup all of the files on my problem HDD, then do a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit (my current OS) to the new HDD, then restore the cloned or image system and program files to the new HDD. I don't want to have to go through the process of reinstalling everything again, when everything seems to be working okay. Since the Win 7 image program makes and exact image of the HDD, then to use that program would cause the new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to be overwritten by the image restore. Therefore, if there should be corrupt data under a bad cluster from the old HDD, that data would not be transferred and my existing problem would be transferred to the new HDD.
On the other hand, if I do a disk clone, I am not sure that the existing programs would continue to operate on the new HDD, and would require a fresh install of each program after the fresh install of the Win 7 OS! I would have then wasted my time doing a transfer of program/data files to my newly formatted and freshly installed OS.
Does anyone know of any program (Acronis True Image, Paragon, Norton Ghost, Macrium Reflect, etc.) that will let you image or clone the program and data (incuding the necessary operational files such as: Win32 system files, activation files, etc.) so that they will work correctly on the fresh install of the OS?
When I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 I get the loading files white progress bar you normally get during an installation, it then goes directly to the scrolling progress bar that would normally appear before a Windows startup, and then goes to a blank Windows 7 desktop with only a cursor (that I can move).I have a computer with the following specs:[CODE]I have tried to install with every version I can get my hands on, both 32 and 64 bit. None of them are upgrade versions. I've tried installing on a fresh WD Raptor and an Intel G25 SSD. All other drives have been disconnected. I've moved my memory around and tried with one stick. My mainboard has the latest official BIOS, although there is a new beta.

So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)
Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a re-install of all components following a complete corruption of the boot sector on my drive which could not be fixed with repairs. The last time I installed everything fresh, I had no issues. Between then and now, there have been no hardware changes on my system, but now I am having issues installing the IDT Codecs. I keep getting an error along the following lines: Quote: ExitError: Error=Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again. Running under compatibility mode, and running drivers from both the motherboard CD and the manufacturer website both have the same effect. The CD, when booted, says "This OS not support!" and only contains 32-bit vista codecs. ECS' website download indicates the IDT drivers as being compatible with Windows 7. Both do not work. It is almost as if the hardware "disappeared," despite the fact that I was using the drivers quite successfully till just 2 days ago, when the boot sector went kaput.
Windows has installed its own default set, which do nothing to power the 8mm jacks which I use with my speakers, but instead put sound through the HDMI, which is useless because I use a dedicated graphics card. I have tried uninstalling this codec and re-installing IDT, to no effect. Windows replaces with its own default codec.I have referenced this thread here, but offered solutions do not seem to work for me: Intel IDT Audio Driver will not install
Does anyone know whether there is a difference in performance between doing a clean install of Windows 7 vs upgrading Vista? Any better stability? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the trouble of the clean install.

I set my boot sequence to boot from DVD-ROM drive first, and HD second. It goes to the "Windows is loading files" screen and gets hung up. I started the process and went to watch TV for an hour, and it is still on the "Windows is loading files" screen. I haven't gotten any error messages. I've unplugged all USB devices from my computer as I have seen on this forum that it has worked for some people.
edited to add: I originally had only 2 Gb of RAM, and it got hung up at the "Windows is loading files" screen. I thought it was getting hung up because I didn't have enough RAM, so I bought brand new 2 sticks of 2 Gb RAM. I took out one of the 1 Gb sticks and placed both of the 2 Gb of RAM...for a total of 5 Gigs. And, it is still doing the same thing.
I tried installling windows 7 over a windows 8 installation,because I couldn't get win 8 to boot up without the disc in the drive. But it doesn't load the normal way, showing you the partitions and then after you pick one you get the " press any key to continue" then it finishes. It's an Hitachi desk star HD. I used to format it by hooking it up as a slave to my other desktop but it's not working. Is there a disk that I could run to clean the residual files off the HD so I can reinstall Win

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.
Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc they are all greyed out..i tried to copy my backup IE favs into my new IE browser and they wont show up because they are hiden it shows it copied to the favs folder but in ie i cannot view them if that makes any sense.
I ran malwarebytes and it seemed to clean the system up.i can not see my files or the desktop icons.
