I made a backup disk of different files and now certain Word documents on the disk and when loaded back onto the laptop show with the file extention .LNK and have a type as Shortcut. The laptop had to be wiped clean hence the need to use the backup.

So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.

The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.
I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.
Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc they are all greyed out..i tried to copy my backup IE favs into my new IE browser and they wont show up because they are hiden it shows it copied to the favs folder but in ie i cannot view them if that makes any sense.
I'm currently running Windows 7 Home Premium and whenever I try to click on a setup exe file, it would open in ms word. I've searched this forum and tried the MS Fix it patch but it didn't work. I can't even upgrade registry optimizer since it opens in word.

I am currently using Microsoft Word Starter 2010. The only way I seem to be able to open the files in my documents folder is opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first then go to file -> open the .docx file. If I try opening it directly from my documents folder without opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first, there's a popup that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I was tidying up my book files in my Calibre library and deleted around 850MB. I noticed that the deletion process took around 5mins to complete. I thought that was strange as I have had multi GB files in my Recycle bin many times before which have taken no more than a few seconds to delete. I also make a backup of my Windows on the first of each month and delete the previous months back up which is over 50GB and this only takes a few seconds as well.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use tags to keep things organized. I can edit and update the tags on Word 2003 files just fine. But when I try to edit and save them on the newer files I get the following error:I've checked ownership and permissions, they both appear to be set properly, and that gives a different error anyway.I've also noticed that the older Word 2003 files allow for a thumbnail icon of the document, but this doesn't work for 2007 even if the thumbnail box is checked. I can edit the document information inside Word of course, but that doesn't show up in Windows Explorer searches.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean.

I believe I�ve run into a bug with Windows Explorer, however, it could possibly be with Word 2010. If it�s not a bug, and can be �fixed� by your helping me, that would be wonderful! (I use Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.) This is what does work just fine: From Word, I open a file, then open another file, then another. I am able to use the CTRL-F6 to move from document to document.This is what does not work: I open those same 3 files from Windows Explorer, by using the mouse to select them and hit ENTER. The files do open in Word. However, the CTRL-F6 keystroke does not work to be able to move from document to document. In the latter, it�s a little bit as if Windows Explorer is starting multiple copies of Word. However, from the Word icon on the taskbar, both cases look the same, i.e., when I hover over the icon, I can see the 3 miniature files, and can click into any of them. I�d like to understand what�s going on that�s different in the 2 cases. But I�d really love to learn of how I can make the latter case work. With my work, I do this process (open multiple files from Windows Explorer) dozens of times a day, and I need efficiency. It takes a lot longer to open each file one-by-one. It also takes longer to not be able to use CTRL-F6.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThere are strange icons when I am in Windows 7 with Office 2007. I first noticed this when I needed to do a project. Because of the lack of new software, I had to save the file in the doc file format. Then, when I tried to open it to edit it, I noticed that the file icon was not right. It was the blank file icon with the Word 2007 icon on it. Then, I noticed that the rtf files have the correct file icon for doc files. The files can still open, but the wrong icon drives me nuts!

View 4 Replies View RelatedYOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. There is no upgrade path. There are user migration tools you can use, but you will need to backup your files and do a clean install. I have seen several threads about this and just want to clarify. The upgrade from Windows Vista is a valid upgrade path, but Windows XP to Windows 7 is not.
