View 2 Replies View RelatedA co-worker must have changed the file associations for ".LNK" shortcut files. All the shortcuts on her desktop are now the wrong icons and all try to start Windows Media Player, when clicked on. I'd like to change the file association for .LNK files. It seems straightforward to change this. I go to Control Panel, then click "Associate a file type," then find the extension, which is listed; "LNK"The problem is: What do I change it to? It's a shortcut, so it's for different applications. On other computers, says "Unknown Application" and that works fine. However, now that it's set to something, I can't find any option that lets me set it back to "unknown" or delete the wrong association. How do I set the right association for "LNK" file types, or otherwise fix this problem, for Windows 7 Professional?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI didn't find a hosts file in the SysWOW64 folder, but I did find one in the "usual" place windowssystem32driversetc and I see it's NOT set to read-only. But when I try to edit it with notepad and save as "all files" rather than .txt (to avoid notepad giving it a .txt extension) it fails to save. It tells me I don't have permission (even though my user account is an administrator).
Is there some reg trick to allow me to change it? I've got a bunch of mappings I want to put in there.
Ok, I don't know why this happens....I have word documents saved on my computer on a few back up drives. I recently went to go into them and they are now .cts files.
I found that if I download and run Crazy Talk software, I can access them, well, from what I read on the internet. I am trying it out now.
i am trying to use a recording program and it automatically cuts my recordings down to 4gb and this is only about 1.30min.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm just posting here because there are these video files which the title of the file is different to the 'name' of the file which appears below the icon. Although not the end of the world, it is annoying since when I put the files on my external HDD to play through my PS3 and that shows the title and as they all have the same title I can't tell what I am watching.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I'm trying to change the icon of a particular file type. i.e., pdf icon is gone for some reason so I want to put one there. All i can find on the net is 'open up file types manager' but how it will be done? I am using Windows 7 x64 home premium.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got this folder. In this folder are 643 sub-folders. I want to change the icon of all of those folders quickly, because doing it manually would be horrible.
Each folder has to have it's own icon. Not all the same one.
Currently the .ico's are in a folder with all the exact same name as the folders they need to be matched with. (if I sort by name, they'll all be in the exact same order, if that helps anything)
example: Mainfolder/A/ needs to have icon "A.ico"
So I've been kinda searching around and it seems things like this can (or not) be done with a batch file, and the desktop.ini. Or something..
Let's say, I am moving a file from a folder to another or changing a file's name. These changes do not show in Explorer unless I right click and select refresh.Has this happened to anyone?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt appears windows does not cnform to the standard method of calculating file sizee.g. the standard value of 1GB is 1000MB, however windows uses 1024MB. As such it is not in fact a "Gigabyte" But a "Gibibyte". This is extremley annoying, as for egxample, I have a 2TB hard Drive, which in the settings tells me is:2,000,263,573,504 bytes, this is correct, however it also tells me that the hard drive is 1.81TB when it should say 2TB. Is there any way I can change windows's calculation method for file sizes? So that 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytesinstead of 1,099,511,627,776 byte which is a TiB (or tebibyte) This is probably a very stupid question and pointless
View 1 Replies View Relatedi just recieved my computer back from service because my hard drive needed to be replaced. i did not notice this until just now, but my system user name was not changed back to the default "user" after they had finished the service.so my question is, how do I change the file name of my Windows 7 user folder? im talking about the one in C/Users. one is called "public" and the other one - which should have a lock next to it, it the one I want to change. I do not want this file to be called "[tech support person's name]" but either "user" or my own name.I have changed one user name via Control Panel/User Accounts/Change your account name, but it did not rename that file.Is it wise to rename this folder, or am I just stuck with a random person's name as the name of my user file?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI performed a successful clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed the OS to a 100gb volume with the intention of using that only for the OS. I, without thinking, allowed the setup to name that drive C. Further, without noticing I allowed the Programs folder and the Users folder to go into this volume. I intended for everything but the OS to go into a large second file named E. My thinking is that the only way that I can fix this situation is to do a new clean install and get it right this time (as much as my limited knowledge will allow. how to rectify this. ntel e6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz Noctua NH-U12P CoolerASUS P5QOCZ Reaper 2X2GB DDR2 800 (PC 6400) EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB WD 250GB GB SATA II Corsair CMPSU 550W

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to change some (but not all) music file details even when I have the ownership. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have done all the usual stuff. Right clicked on Properties, gone into Security, checked I have Full control. I have then gone into Advanced and changed the ownership to myself and still nothing. The only thing I think is strange is that there seems to be several entries in the Security tab on properties, and for that matter in the Advanced bit, of users/groups with similar titles all connected with me. For example 'steve (steve-PCsteve)', which is the one I usually use for ownership.
Also 'Administrator (steve-PCAdministrators)', which has ownership of a few files. Last is 'Users (steve-PCUsers)'. The is also 'Authenticated users', 'SYSTEM' and on one file I found 'WMPNetworkSvc'. All of these are usually listed on the Security tab and usually in the Advanced section. I have managed to change some music files to my ownership and change the details but not all. I have all my music on an external hard drive and on my C drive. Don't want to loose such a briliant collection now do I.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout 2 days ago I noticed that all of a sudden my scroll and progress bars, and all of the prompt windows (save, open file, etc.) changed to a Windows 98 style! I didn't think anything of it until I tried to save an image through Firefox and it wouldn't bring up the prompt to choose a location. Initially I thought it to be exclusive to Firefox, but later I had worked on an Word document and when I tried to Save As... the exact same thing, a flash indicating that it tried to open the location window and that's it. Every program does the exact same thing, no way to bring up a location menu or change directory.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to change a mp3 file properties > details, but it won't let me. There is nothing listed. When looking in explorer, it shows no album information or title. It does it with video files as well, so I am assuming all properties.
When I do change something from the bottom, it gives me error 0x80004005: Unspecified error. 'An unexpected error is keeping you from applying properties to the file' I used to be able to, so not sure what happened!
MediaMonkey can see the details, but every file on the computer, I can't see the details in explorer? Do I have to register some .dll? Regserv32 of some sort?
Is there a way to change a file association for all users who use windows 7? I intend to roll windows 7 out within my company and prefer not to have to make this change per user if I could avoid it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI use tags to keep things organized. I can edit and update the tags on Word 2003 files just fine. But when I try to edit and save them on the newer files I get the following error:I've checked ownership and permissions, they both appear to be set properly, and that gives a different error anyway.I've also noticed that the older Word 2003 files allow for a thumbnail icon of the document, but this doesn't work for 2007 even if the thumbnail box is checked. I can edit the document information inside Word of course, but that doesn't show up in Windows Explorer searches.

View 6 Replies View RelatedEveryday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

Most of the time, my computer audio output is set to my on-board motherboard audio connected to simple speakers, but I frequently switch the default device to digital output through my sound card (HTO Striker 7.1). My goal is to create a file that I can keep on the desktop that will switch the default audio device. In a perfect world, it would switch back and forth between the 2 settings that I use, but I understand that it might be too much to ask for. I have a bit of experience with batch files in XP, but that was essentially reverse-engineering things that I found online.
