View 3 RepliesThis problem started a few days ago. Whenever I close my laptop, the computer shuts down. I've done the obvious and checked the settings for sleep, hibernate and shutdown on lid close, but those are all set to sleep, not shutdown. As you might imagine, this issue is a real hassle. I've been losing work and spending far too long on start up time with this.
The laptop itself is an hp pavilion dv4, if that might have anything to do with it.
One of the computers in the office where I work hangs when the user shuts down in the evening. The error dialog says there are two processes still running, and the title bar of the dialog says "explorer.exe error". The message in the dialog says something like "The instruction at "0xXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX", The memory could not be "written. Click OK to close." There is an OK button and when you click it, the computers finishes it's shutdown with no further hang up. Windows explorer is the stuck process shown. I've done a little research on it and some of the suggestions are to clear the temporary internet files, which I did, but that didn't help and I wonder if they were thinking IE and not the Windows explorer which is different.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy com is running on Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit, and one day I was starting up the com and it took really long to take me to the home screen, so I forced shut down it when the screen was still black (used a no GUI boot). After the restart the message explorer.exe is not responding and it keeps repeating. I've read some other solutions like running the sfc (did it twice) or copy-and-pasting explorer.exe from windows folder to system32 folder all didn't help.

Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop, Sony Vaio, which have the power button on the right side, not over the keyboard like some other models. So I would like to turn on the laptop by pushing the power button anytime - even when the lid is closed. But this is not the case, I can only turn on the laptop when i open the lid. I have connected my laptop to TV (as dock, via HDMI port) to look at movies. I have changed the power settings to do nothing when i closing the lid. Which works fine, but I still need to open a lid, turn on, and close the lid again! I think it should be an easy way to solve this problem. So i want to know is there any way to turn on windows when the lid is closed?

The external button works, but one big problem remains:I cannot power UP the netbook when the lid is closed, even if I press the external remote power button?Instead, when lid is opened, the remote button works perfectly!
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a standard PC => Router => Internet (Modem) connection at the moment and I didn't notice until just now but every single port on my machine forces itself closed. I know the issue is not with my ISP as they don't block any ports, I have had ports opened before, and as of noticing this issue opening ports works on my other PCs. After testing the router is also functioning perfectly and is not at issue with port forwarding.I do not run any type of anti-virus software and I also do not run any third party firewall software. Windows Firewall has been tried as both enabled and disabled (though they give different results). When connected to the internet through my router the opened ports appear as stealthed like all of the non-forwarded ports when windows firewall is enabled with proper rules and as closed when windows firewall is disabled. When connected directly through to my internet the ports all show as closed.

All seems to work except that when I close the lid then open it after machine goes in to sleep mode the screen will not turn on and machine requires a hard restart. I paid Alienware for help...big mistake now my laptop is worse.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

I get the BSOD at random moments, and it usually says fltmgr.sys (something like this) and the Driver Equal or Inequal message. I'm usually using my computer to go on the internet, although sometimes there's a BSOD when I close the lid. (I know because when I boot up the computer again it tells me there was an unexpected shutdown.)
Recently, with no system changes, suspicious downloads, or drops in recent history, my 6 Month old Clevo build began exhibiting two very bizarre symptoms:
1) Upon booting, Windows will start normally ,up until the mouse is rendered before the log in screen appears, then the system seems to power down. However, upon pressing the power button, the computer resumes booting right from where it left off as if it had entered a very rapid hibernation mode.
2) When the lid is closed during normal use, even when the system is not set to sleep or hibernate upon a lid closing, the system will hang permanently, with indicator lights like caps lock getting stuck either on or off and the hard drive light not turning on. This requires a hard reset to fix.
I have scanned memory, boot sectors, and the entire hard drive for malicious programs like worms, packers, and rootkits with Avast and Kapersky boot time scans to no avail. The system behaves normally otherwise, except during boot or lid closing. No overheating, screen flashing, or abnormal system processes are occurring. Though I have not yet checked the exact temps or checked the contents of rundll.I have a hunch it is the motherboard, but I don't have the screwdrivers to check or try to reset the SODIMMS.I have found a few questionable errors in the event log, but no strange processes in system resource manager. This is transcript of said questionable error log with all events from past 7 days (as of 11/27/2011) (with said issue arising on the 25th)The Download is 215 Kb compressed and 5 Mb uncompressed with over 7,000 events. On an unrelated note, the event log reports the processor getting underpowered, is this just a momentary thing during bootup or something that could hinder performance?
Is there something that will write to a log or similar, all the processes opened and closed within a certain timeframe?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI d/l and installed Firefox to see 'what it's all about'. I liked it. However, one day I was downloading some files and closed the browser. I noticed that when I did this all downloads terminated and left me with incomplete files. Since IE has never behaved this way I was most upset and gave Firefox the boot. This was many versions ago and am wondering if it still does this.

I closed all the video windows, and ManyCam is still going on broadcasting. I changed the camera source to a different camera and it was still broadcasting (Usually when I press the close button, it stops broadcasting unless there is a video window open). How can I find out which program or process is using it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI work in an architecture office using Quickbooks to track hours, expenses, billing, etc. The company QB files reside on the server in a shared directory that is mapped as drive Z: on all machines through a domain logon script that runs when each person logs on to their machine. The company file runs in multi-user mode so that everyone can access the file and enter their hours at the same time. The problem is that if anyone happens to leave Quickbooks open at night, the server backup process (running BackupExec) will skip the files that are in use, usually either 2 or 3 files. This is potentially bad news because if anything happened to the server the following day after those files were skipped, we would not have the file from the night before to restore, which could potentially mean lots of information lost (sometimes lots of info is entered in one day, especially on "billing" days).Sometimes people will leave in the afternoon for a meeting, thinking they'll be back later and leave their programs open. But then the meeting ends up running long and they don't come back until the next day. That's usually why Quickbooks ends up getting left open on a machine overnight. What I'm wondering is if there's a way to make the program automatically close, if it's open on any machine, perhaps just before the backup process starts on the server. Or, make the program close if the computer has been idle a certain amount of time.Is there any way to make this happen? All machines in our office that have Quickbooks on it run Windows 7, except for one machine that still runs XP.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhy do I get this?. Desktop Window manager stopped working and was closed? I am using motherboard P4S8X with Windows 7 just install. And 2 gb memory.
It maybe a driver issue with the MOBO or some other device. Try and update the MOBO drivers to start with and see if that does anything. If worse comes to worse, you can do a start repair by booting from the W7 DVD.
I was actually thinking this was more specific to the video driver, as DWM has close ties to it...
It's probably something obvious but both Pause and Wait for don't seem have the functionality I needed. The batch file (windows command script) I'm making is intended to do something fairly simple. It extracts a 7zip file into the TEMP directory then starts an executable from that 7zip file. All that is not a problem, but I really wanted to add some house cleaning functionality as well. Namely, after that executable or process is closed, the script deletes the extracted content from the TEMP folder. Also, but less importantly I was wondering if there is a way to hide the command prompt while the script & application is running, mainly so the command prompt window isn't closed while waiting for the application to end, thus missing the command to purge the TEMP files.
