My 3 mo old dell XPS crashed. I cannot boot in safe,safe with networking. I tried Dell data safe + restore. I cannnot reach desktop. A friend said CTRL Fll will restore to factory settings? Dell didn't even suggest this. Will it work?

Choosing LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR results in a screen that says Windows files are loading, then goes to a blank screen where it hangs. Attempting to boot the computer in Safe Mode results in the process hanging at \Windows\system32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
I was able to remove the SATA hard drive, hook it to my desktop and recover all my files. Attempt to boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD results in the process hanging at the STARTING WINDOWS screen.
Attempt to boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD with the hard drive removed results in the process hanging at the STARTING WINDOWS screen. I was able to boot Ubuntu from the CD and navigate through the computer.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I am able to access the BIOS setup, but can't make any changes because the touchpad will not move the pointer. A USB mouse will allow the pointer to move, but not when I'm in the BIOS setup.
A Dell Inspiron E1705, w/ 2x2gb mem, 500 gb hd, ATI Radeon x1400 vid and Win 7.There were no Dell drivers or programs and the system BIOS was ver A01. Checking the Dell website against the Service Tag, I found 22 drivers and programs specific to the computer. Most of them ran and installed under Win 7 with no trouble. The last one was the bios flash utility program to update the bios to ver A10. The bios flashed, seemed to go ok. But on system reboot, after the initial screem about resetting the memory sticks, the computer is stuck in an infinite reboot loop.It loads the initial POST screen, completes the POST, seeks for its boot device and when it finds and starts to access the installed HD it reboots. I have reset all the bios settings to factory default settings. I have pulled the system battery and "cleared the cmos", but no joy there. I have created a bootable usb flash drive with another Dell laptop, and the computer will boot from that. I have other bootable cd's, and the computer will boot from them. I can use the bootable cd's to determine that the programs they run (freeware backup programs and a copy of bart pe) can access the installed hd,and see the files there, so the installed hd is intact. But i still can't get the computer to boot from it.My first thought was to reinstall the ver A01 bios, but it would not complete the process and remained at ver .A10. I was able to flash bios A09, and then A07, etc, all the way back to ver A04. But after that I could go back no further, A02 and A01 flash utilities returned an error message. If I found some compatible mem sticks and a smaller hd, installed them, could I reflash bios ver A02 or A01? Would that do me any good? (I have 2 x 256 mg mem sticks from a dell inspiron 5100 which I upgraded to 2x1gb, and a 40 gb 2.5in hd that also came out of the 5100, so I could use those parts in the e1705 to reflash the earlier bios)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been scouring the internet trying to fix a boot issue with my Dell XPS 420. It worked fine last week but on Saturday started to blue screen. I installed a new HD and installed a fresh copy of Win7 64-bit. I reinstalled my ATI video drivers but nothing else (e.g. I had to update a load of codecs for Win7 on the other install). I tried booting again from the original hard drive and everything came back with no errors. I left the PC up overnight, and now I get the same blue screen with various errors. So I disconnected from that hard drive and tried to boot from the fresh install, now it blue screens there as well. So I hit F8 and tried to boot in Safemode with Networking. Hangs at the casspnp.sys file. Then tried to boot from the DVD and repair but the repair only gets so far and yet another blue screen.I have 8gb of RAM onboard, and I have an ATI 2400 video card installed that is jacked into a Panasonic plasma display. Other than that, I've not customized anything else. I've ruled out the RAM as I swapped it out. Could be the DVD as it was having what appeared to be I/O issues. However, it seems to work fine with I press F12 and boot from the DVD. I have this PC connected to a Port Authority KVM. I've reset the KVM as well. I also have a USB hub in the mix as well. I reseated my RAM, the DVD cables.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm working on my brother's girlfriend's Dell Inspiron 1764 that will begin to start windows and then immediately goes back to the post screen. I have tried to do a system restore, and recover from a system image... but of course she has made neither of these backups. The laptop will not load windows in safe mode and i have also tried to disable driver signature enforcement. I'm not exactly sure what happened before the failure, but i know my brother installed a Honda data logging program called HONDATA right before it crashed so I am suspecting some sort of driver issues. Is there anything else i can do besides the full Dell system restore that would wipe all of her data?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI couldn't find another thread relating to the exact same problem, as they have hijackthis logs etc. whereas I cannot get onto my laptop to do anything at all.I am running a Dell Studio 1555 with Windows 7. When I turn it on I can hear it boot, but everytime the screen just stays black. I cannot start it in safemode or do anything. It is just blackI can think is that the other day I used CC Cleaner and it did some things to the registry. Otherwise I have not downloaded anything or done anything that should suddenly make it stop working.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Dell Precision 670 will not boot Windows 7 after upgrading the memory to 8GB.Configuration follows:*BIOS A06*2 x 4GB SIMMS in slots 1 and 2. These are correct WS670/4GB PC3200 EEC registered modules as recommended.*memory fan is installed*3 SCSI drives with Adaptec 7901 RAID controller.I've got a dual boot setup, and the system boots and runs fine from the alternate OS (Win XP x64) just fine. The BIOS lists the memory as installed and shows no errors or problems. A memory test indicates that the memory is okay. When I try to do a boot repair from Win7, the Win7 OS is not listed and installing the correct RAID and SCSI drivers from the repair window does not make it visible. The partition is not, in fact, visible from the repair tool. When I put the old memory back in (4 x 512mb SIMMS in slots 1,2,3,4) the system boots and runs fine with Windows 7. What's up with this?

I get a screen with six line that all have vista in them and am unable to do anything in that screen. I went to turn my laptop on the other morning and as usual the dell logo came up and loaded, then the windows symbol saying "starting windows"... then strangely a black screen with a cursor arrow... nothing more, no log in screen... just black nothingness... I can use the M1330 for about 20 minutes and then bam..... the lappy will turn off and when I try to turn it back on I get nothing but a weird white screen. Not even the dell boot screen will appear.
When I first installed Windows 7 it found all drivers but due to this issue I have sought to change a few key drivers. Such as, the nVidia 8400 drivers and I have updated the SATA drivers to R154198

i just restored to a disk image i recently backed up. When it was done i tried to boot my system and it automatically booted to the dell diagnostics. why is that? i can't seem to find a way to boot to my system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working my sister's Dell Inspiron n5010 running Windows 7 Enterprise. It has been fine until this week when it became slow to the point of unusable. I had installed Microsoft Security Essentials on it for her, and she said one night when she shut it down, it installed updates. It finished and shut down. Next morning, she opened the lid and the screen was on saying "installing update 1 of 12, 0%" as if it had never finished and froze up from the night before. It finally finished and when it booted into Windows, I tried to run a virus scan, but it said Security Essentials was out of date and failed to start. I tried unsuccessfully to update it, and I couldn't get much of anything else to run either, it was so slow. I used my install disc to start fresh with a new install of Windows, and it seemed to fix it, until I got to installing drivers. before beginning on the drivers, I installed Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, ran scans, and they came up clean. As soon as I started installing drivers, though, it became slow, froze up, and I was back to square one. Now when it tries to boot to Windows, it gives two options: launch startup repair (which freezes) or start Windows normally (which also freezes). Booting from the install disc to start again with a Windows install won't even work now. As soon as it boots from the cd, it freezes.

One of my Dell systems took a dive (no power, etc.) so I pulled out the hard drive and hooked it up to this Dell Vostro 260 so the person could have access to their files. I've checked the BIOS to boot from it, but nope, doesn't work. The system goes black, little cursor for a moment then asks me if I want to run repair to start normally. I've tried repair and normally but still can't boot from this external. The system does see it, so I'm really not sure what to do
View 13 Replies View RelatedI run win 7 sp1 on dell inspiron 1520 Its dvd-writer was damaged, so i bought an external Transcend dvd-writer and its working properly but when i insert a bootable cd in it and want to boot the windows from it, the windows does not recognize it and boots normally from internal hard driver as usuall. I am sure the cd is bootable and have tested it in other systems.
