View 2 RepliesI have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop with Windows 7. Laptop will not boot up. I tried Last Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode, it will still not boot up. It looks like it will but it does not. Then I went to the BIOS and did the Hardware Scan and it gave me this message.Error Code 0142Msg Error Code 2000-0142Msg Hard Drive 0 - self test unsuccessful Status 79
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I power on my Dell 1545, it goes to the Windows Error Recovery screen. Choosing LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR results in a screen that says Windows files are loading, then goes to a blank screen where it hangs. Choosing START WINDOWS NORMALLY results in the process hanging at the STARTING WINDOWS screen.
Attempting to boot the computer in Safe Mode results in the process hanging at \Windows\system32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
I was able to remove the SATA hard drive, hook it to my desktop and recover all my files. Attempt to boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD results in the process hanging at the STARTING WINDOWS screen.
Attempt to boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD with the hard drive removed results in the process hanging at the STARTING WINDOWS screen. I was able to boot Ubuntu from the CD and navigate through the computer.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I am able to access the BIOS setup, but can't make any changes because the touchpad will not move the pointer. A USB mouse will allow the pointer to move, but not when I'm in the BIOS setup.
my computer wont boot ,its says ,BOOTMGR image is corrupt.the system cannot boot what do i do to boot or repair this
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working my sister's Dell Inspiron n5010 running Windows 7 Enterprise. It has been fine until this week when it became slow to the point of unusable. I had installed Microsoft Security Essentials on it for her, and she said one night when she shut it down, it installed updates. It finished and shut down. Next morning, she opened the lid and the screen was on saying "installing update 1 of 12, 0%" as if it had never finished and froze up from the night before. It finally finished and when it booted into Windows, I tried to run a virus scan, but it said Security Essentials was out of date and failed to start. I tried unsuccessfully to update it, and I couldn't get much of anything else to run either, it was so slow. I used my install disc to start fresh with a new install of Windows, and it seemed to fix it, until I got to installing drivers. before beginning on the drivers, I installed Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, ran scans, and they came up clean. As soon as I started installing drivers, though, it became slow, froze up, and I was back to square one. Now when it tries to boot to Windows, it gives two options: launch startup repair (which freezes) or start Windows normally (which also freezes). Booting from the install disc to start again with a Windows install won't even work now. As soon as it boots from the cd, it freezes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on my brother's girlfriend's Dell Inspiron 1764 that will begin to start windows and then immediately goes back to the post screen. I have tried to do a system restore, and recover from a system image... but of course she has made neither of these backups. The laptop will not load windows in safe mode and i have also tried to disable driver signature enforcement. I'm not exactly sure what happened before the failure, but i know my brother installed a Honda data logging program called HONDATA right before it crashed so I am suspecting some sort of driver issues. Is there anything else i can do besides the full Dell system restore that would wipe all of her data?

View 2 Replies View Relatedwhenever I turn on the laptop, it seems to boot into Windows 7, in that the "Starting Windows" text appears and the little animation of colors forming the logo shows, but as some point it fails. This message appears on screen:autocheck not found - skipping AUTOCHECK After a few seconds a BSOD shows up, but too fast for me to make out what it says. It used to, but after some hasty fix attempts no longer does, cycle around to a menu that informed me of this error:Status: 0xc000000f Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. Here's the longer history:As some point in the past I decided to try out dual-booting Windows 7 and Linux on the laptop. I got it to a state where this worked fine. I had partitions roughly as follows:[Ubuntu][Windows 7]([Data and files][Boot]) The parentheses denote a logical partition. The Boot partition was very small and only held what was necessary to launch GRUB. This week, I realized that I hardly ever used the Linux partition and decided to get rid of it to reclaim storage space. This is where the trouble begins. I rebooted into a thumb drive that could run GParted and modified the hard drive layout in the following steps: Delete the Ubuntu partition Delete the Boot partition Grow the Data/Files partition to take up the space left by Boot Shrink the Windows 7 partition to make it faster to move Move the Windows 7 partition to the front of the volume Expand it to take up the remaining space. What I ended up with was: [Windows 7]([Data and files]) My naive and fatal mistake was to trust that the Windows Repair CD could fix any boot issues, and also that there would be no catastrophic hardware failures. Both of these assumptions turned out to be false.
First, the laptop's CD/DVD drive has either broken or is too unreliable to use. I have noticed it becoming more and more unstable over time, but now (when I need it most!) it simply does not seem to want to spin up and function at all. This forced me to create a Windows Repair USB drive. However, I can't load any installation media. This is because the laptop did not come with an install DVD. It had a recovery sector, which I cannibalized for the Linux partition. I did copy the stock recovery stuff to a series of DVDs, but, well...This is all to say that any solution that requires a DVD drive is straight out until I can replace it, which I'd like to consider a last resort. My expectations for the Windows Repair CD/USB have been dashed. Attempting to automatically fix boot issues either fails for some specific reason (I can probably reproduce it and provide the details, if necessary), with a dialog to send a report, or fails because it cannot detect any problems. I have tried a variety of things based on my own research to fix this through the command prompt: Running chkdsk /x /r on all drives. Does not find any errors. Running various bootrec commands: /fixmbr, /fixboot, /rebuildbcd, /scanos. All complete successfully, but the last 2 report finding 0 Windows installations. Using bcdboot and bootsect to recreate the bootloader. Again, no errors result, but it does not fix the issue. I guess it should have been obvious that none of the boot record fixes would matter, since the laptop does boot into Windows 7, briefly.
Today when I was surfing on my laptop (G74S Series) I wanted to restart the laptop because the internet crashed and it usually helps to restart. But I restarted it holding down the power button thing. So, I restarted it and while I was waiting, staring in to the screen, the blinking "_" thing when you start up was doing that for a while and nothing was happening, and a couple of seconds later the computer tells me that it can't boot the laptop/pc because no drive was found. I saw an error code but I didn't catch it, but it was something like "0x0000".So then on later, it sent me in to "Image Restore" But I have no image to restore with, so I cancel it, and then it sends me into the menu where. I can choose to "Restore Computer" or "Scan for startup errors" or something like that (I don't really have a such accurate memory.)And on the top it also says "os unknown on (unknown) local disk".Everytime I start the computer it sends me to that menu where I can choose to restore my computer etc..And I can't really do much about it since I don't have the windows 7 disc/dvd thing either. And this all came all so sudden I don't really know what to do.I don't have any backu or anything, and windows can only detect my /D: drive and not /C:, and I have my OS on /C/

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Win7 HP on a Dell Vostro M350 w 2G RAM and investigating intermittent IE stalling during accessing/loading of retail websites. I just removed MSE so only AVG running off hours and no other scheduled processes should be running. This is wireless, so can't rule out a week signal at other end of house-need to investigate further. Runs fine next to router when I try to check it out, then when wife is surfing in kitchen, slow again, but not always. I have a new "n" Netgear dual band router and laptop is on the 2.4Gig band shared with no one. I'm considering a repeater in the middle of the house once I'm convinced it's a weak signal thing. DSL is ATT at 3meg tier, but 2.67 measured with Speakeasy.net. My personal 3.2Gig core 2 duo tower is direct-connect to router and never, ever see a lag in browsing but I use Chrome 99% of the time. have not seen an issue with IE on tower either for that matter. laptop does have only 2G of RAM (I have 4) and seems to be at 1.5G or 1.6G utilization much of the time, so maybe it's memory bound but no apps open other than IE and Outlook 2010.
I find IE consuming 25% of cpu when just idling on a given page. what's it doing? Is this normal? Java has been removed and no fancy graphics on websites. When I kill IE then reopen it and it's just sitting on same page, it's at zero cpu usage. Then after a lot of surfing and opening/closing pages, it's spinning it's again wheels doing something while the screen is static.I did recently convert email from POP3 to IMAP with iCloud for full syncing with a new iPad (all works). Maybe there's some background Outlook overhead going on there??? However, this is a long term complaint that precedes arrival of the iPad.free "MS task manager" like app that will quickly display the top 2 or 3 processes in terms of % cpu cycles? Since this is intermittent, by the time I get Windows Task Manager up and scan the long list, the offending process often drops to zero. I have Sysinternals Process Explorer, but it still takes time to study the display to see who's doing what. I just want something that quickly displays the "smoking gun" with no misc. data to sift through.
I think this is driver related. My Dell laptop touch pad is working fine for moving the pointer and clicking but the scrollbar for web pages etc. that runs vertically down the left of the pad does not function at all. I have had a look around the Device Manager but I cant find the pads entry to update it. Perhaps this is just something that is incompatible with Windows 7...
Does anyone else have this problem?
Dell Inspiron XPS M140 - Pentium M 1.86 GHz - 14.1 " - 512 MB Ram - 60 GB HDD-Hardware Infomation and Computer Tutorials
Here is a link to my laptop specs. Never understood why Dell never released video drivers compatible with anything above xp for this device, which was purchased new in 2006. I have the system running with windows 7, and device manager reports no problems with any devices, but experience rating gives it a 1.0 for graphic, which I am thinking cannot be the case.
This thing had a decent graphics card when it was released, and plays semi modern games ok with xp. I did a little research online and found people had trubs finding graphics drivers compatible with vista.
Anyone on these boards have any advice??
Okay I been working on someone's laptop. It's. Dell Inspiron 1420. This one you might have seem problems with the GPU. But that a the Nvida one. This one has intel hd GPU. So heres the problem the laptop starts nothing on the screen hard drive light stays on for about 2 minutes. But screen has nothing in it. But only a few times I the screen works when you start it by pressing the Fn and holding it down when you press the power button. But it takes you to the dell testing center.
