I have a Dell XPS laptop and I have a driver problem and I cannot access my desktop! I have a Windows Vista CD-drive that has requires a system image backup or a backup point installed at the system, but I don't have one installed! How do I create a system image backup or a backup point to install on my computer or where do I download one?
View 2 RepliesThere is a program on the desktop that I want to run, but when I try to run it [winzip self-extractor] I get an error message saying "cannot run setup.exe" and when I try to delete it I get "action cannot be completed because the file is open in itself [??!!] or sometimes it says it's open in another program; it has never been opened before. This program worked fine in Win7 on another machine and Vista and XP before that.

Both XP machines can access the Windows 7 machine and edit/view files. The Windows 7 desktop can access the XP desktop. But the Windows 7 desktop CAN NOT access the XP laptop. I receive the following message.
"Documents is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command"
I have tried a few things including the IRPStackSize regedit that msft goes on about, but I still can’t get it working.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having major networking issues. I’ve two systems that I’m trying to network. One’s a laptop running Windows 7 Beta (Build 7057) and the other is a desktop running Windows XP Pro SP3.
I’ll detail the problem first, and then describe what I’ve done to eliminate the problem (but failed miserably so far). The desktop (windows XP) can see the laptop (Windows 7) and has access to the shared folders and everything. No problem on that account. The laptop (Windows 7), however, cannot see or access the folders on the desktop (windows XP). I want complete and smooth sharing between the two systems.
The network is setup in the following way:
Motorola Modem --> Wireless Netgear Router --> Desktop (wired) and Laptop (wireless)
The desktop and laptop are assigned ip’s from the router.
I turned off the third-party firewall (Kaspersky) on the desktop as well as the Windows Firewall and also the Windows Firewall on the laptop (Windows 7) and tried to run the network then but no go. The computers can, however, ping each other.
I’ve installed the LLTP (something something) on the desktop (XP) but that didn’t really do much except for making the XP desktop visible in the Network Map tool on Windows 7.
On Windows 7, network discovery is ON, file and printer sharing is ON, public folder sharing is ON, password protection is OFF. The network location has been set as private as well.
On XP, I ran the network wizard but again no change.
Strangely enough, I can access the shared folders on XP if I type //computername in Windows 7 and I’ve full access to them then. But they just don’t show in my network folder.
I’m at a loss as to what to do next. I’ve been going through the forums and one of the solutions people seem to be offering is that I should make matching user accounts and passwords on both the computers but that just sounds messed and impractical. It’s the least efficient way of solving this problem. Can someone please help?

I am trying to access the 'personalization' settings on my desktop, but when I click it, an error message comes up saying "server threw an exception" and I cannot access it. It was working fine a few days ago but now its not. Anyone know how to fix this? I have not installed or uninstalled anything recently.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWoke up today to find my computer (which I never turn off) sitting at the login screen saying "Please Wait..." I've seen it say that before, but only when you'd type your password incorrectly and it hangs for a second before it goes back to the login screen. Anyway, when I type my password in and click login the system just hangs at the "Welcome" screen. I left it for over and hour and came back, still hanging. I've seen older threads on here suggesting to enable "boot log" after pressing f8, that did nothing.
I am able to log into the computer on an old admin account that I created over a year ago, it's never been used, it works fine. Acts like a fresh install and only half my programs are there unfortunately. However, programs can be reinstalled. My biggest problem is that when I go into my files on the old account while logged into my fresh account I can access everything after gaining access, but when I try to open "Desktop" from the old account the system just Hangs, just like it does while trying to log into my normal account.
When I right click to examine the properties of "desktop" on the normal account, it says 0 bytes, in fact 0 everything, like it doesn't exist. This is really bad because a lot of my work is saved in folders on my desktop and I need the data from there. When I logged into the new account and gained access to my files and saw that I could read everything fine in my documents I had a sigh of relief figuring that all I would have to do would be a re-install or continue on a new account. Doesn't it just figure that the desktop folder isn't working?
I am trying to have my computer the most secure as possible. I have a firewall, antivirus, anti-malware, etc. But I was wondering is it possible to have on your computer even with an anti-virus, a malicious program that allow Remote Desktop Control access (something like ProRat trojan or teamviewer)? Because I am suspecting that someone I know could had install/changed something on my computer. I know those suspicion might not be founded but in anyway I would like to understand how it work.
1. Is there any malicious application that allow Remote Desktop access that cannot be found by anti-virus? (I know it could be put in the list of exception on the anti-virus).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have setup a Homegroup for a desktop and 2 laptops. All computers have joined the Homegroup and the 2 laptops can see files on the other computers. However, when I try to access the other computers from the desktop, I'm asked to sign in. I enter the other computer user's name and since neither has a password I just click on OK. Then I get a message that says I don't have permission to access the files. Why am I asked to sign-in only on my desktop? Do I need to setup passwords on the laptops?

Today when I loaded windows 7 I clicked on my account and after a slight delay a message appeared "preparing your desktop". When it appeared it was a new desktop and a message on the task bar stated "you can not access you files and folders". I have followed a few steps about unlocking locked accounts but my account wasn't locked. A few other things have been happening over the last week so I am worried I might have a virus.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having an annoying problem. With my desktop computer I'm unable to access the webmail login for my work website. I'm not positive, but I thought it might be due to the full version trial of Malwarebytes that I installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Malwarebytes using Revo Uninstaller, and now have just the standard version, and I still have the problem.
I can access my work website (except for the webmail login), but when I try to ping my work website I get "general failure" results. I also get "general failure" results when pinging the webmail login.I can access the webmail login through my laptop. The reason I think it might be Malwarebytes is because from what I remember random websites stopped loading after I opted for the full version trial.I tried disabling Windows Firewall and Security Essentials real time scanning I've tried to access the webmail login using Firefox, Chrome and IE and none worked. I've tried using my cell phone as a modem to bypass the router and that didn't work.
Now then I see someone has posted a similar issue to mine but his seems more technical than mine. What's the issue you ask? I have a laptop that is running windows 7 and can view the document folder on my vista desktop but when I try to access it, it restricts me saying I don't have access. I removed the password being required to access files. I took off the shared wizard thing on the folder I want to access (on the vista desktop) that was recommended by another user on the site.
I still can't access the files on that computer but i can access from the desktop the files on my laptop (windows 7) both are on the same workgroup but I don't know what else to do.
I am currently running a tablet netbook with Windows 7 pro x32. It's not powerful enough to run photoshop very well, and my license wouldn't let me put it on there anyway. However, this netbook is a tablet. I'd like to use it for graphics, as it has a Wacom digitizer.
What I'm interested in doing is running a VNC to access my desktop (running Windows 7 pro x64) and be able to control photoshop from my tablet.
Currently, I've tried Windows Remote Desktop, and while it works fairly well, two things are wrong:
1) Mouse/Tablet input seems to be compressed. This turns my curves into straight lines unless I go reeeeally slowly. Is there any way to change this?
2) There seems to be an option for plug-and-play drivers to be transferred, is there *any* way to make pressure sensitivity work?
I have looked into other solutions, such as TightVNC, UltraVNC, and LogMeIn Free, but VNC isn't very secure (and I don't want to deal with SSH tunneling) and LogMeIn Pro is expensive, while LogMeIn Free is limited.
On that note, I haven't been able to find out *anything* relating to the security of Windows Remote Desktop. Is it encrypted, or what? Security is important to me, as I am running both the desktop and the netbook on networks that I have no control over, and are inherently insecure.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack when it was released, I installed Windows 8 preview on a new partition of my Windows 7 laptop. Ive been switching back and forth no problem, but about a month ago when trying to log in, I typed in my password and was stuck at the black screen with a cursor. After a few restarts and startup repairs it sorted itself out. Now, it's happened again, but this time, startup repair isn't doing the trick. It reports no OS found in the error. I am dual booting between 7 and 8, and in trying to login to 7, typing my password, it again brings me to the black screen with a cursor. I cannot press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reach the task manager and manually start explorer.exe, and same thing happens in safe mode.
I have checked my C drive and saw there were backups of my explorer.exe, so I tried to switch them up with the current one. At one point, I could get to my desktop and see all of my taskbar icons, however hovering over the taskbar would show a loading cursor and I could not open anything. Restarting again brought me back to the black screen. I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, BCD editor, etc, to no avail. I have also tried "last known good configuration", system restore (which reports no restore points...) and checking the registry to verify explorer.exe is the only listing in the Shell file. Also, virus scan MBAM and others: No viruses.
Errors: At one point with the black screen, I let it sit, and a few errors came up after an hour or so... dwm.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, explorer.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, then when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, "Failure to display security and shut down options". In viewing one of the error details, it reported problem event name InPageCoFire, damaged file name propsys.dll. I replaced that file and a clean one and no change. Right now I am using Windows 8 boot. I can see all of my files are still in the Windows 7 partition.
I think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
I have a Win 7 laptop and xp desktop on my network. When I try to access the xp desktop from the win 7 laptop, I sometimes get a dialog box requesting username/password. Other times I get a message box that I do not have permission to access the desktop. Other times still, everything works fine.The xp can access the laptop no problem. Both of my computers are on Windows 7 Professionnal. My router is a Belkin F9K1002.
I followed the official widows tutorial. I forwarded the necessary port on my router (I switched from port 3389 to 50000, in case 3389 was blocked by my isp).
Every time I try to connect I get

Whenever i take a file and put it onto the my desktop, all the permissions to the file is completely stripped. Leaving none able to open the file.I am able to go into access control and add myself again, but it makes no sense at all..

I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)
"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a progra or, if one is already installed, create an assocation in the Default Programs control Panel".
I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).
Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.
I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..
Why all desktop icons appear in the Desktop folder but not on the desktop itself?I set my desktop to show the Recicle Bin icon only, but if I open the Desktop folder in Explorer they are all there: Computer, Control Panel, Libraries, Network, User's Files, and Recycle Bin.
