Can't Boot - SSD Shows Up In BIOS But Not In The Recovery Mode
Oct 25, 2012
My Zenbook crashed yesterday when I clicked OK to a "LiveUpdate" pop-up on my desktop. Guess it was from Asus but I'm not sure, as the pop-up didn't contain any text...
When I boot it gets to the (pulsating) Windows logo - after that I just get a black screen with a movable cursor.
None of the safe modes works - just black screens with "safe mode" written in every corner.
I've made a bootable USB with Windows 7, and that boots up fine to the install/recovery mode - sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't get that far, it just goes to the black screen even though I'm certain it boots from the USB. Weird.
Anyway, the recovery mode can't find any system images, and I can't see the SSD when I try the 'load the drivers' option. HOWEVER, the harddrive DOES show up in the BIOS, but only IF the USB is in the machine?
I have an option to reinstall Windows (I think...), but I would very much like to safe some files before the drive is formatted...

I usually consider myself having some idea about computers but this things is out of my league. [code] My computer has been getting BSOD'S for several days after installing java 7 update 8.I somehow managed to get system back on it's track for few times with cd/usb booting but now, when i start it i just get a black screen no beeps at all and back, gpu and cpu fans are working on max.Tried reseting bios with clr cmos button and taking the bios battery out but nothing helps.I thought it could be hardware error and as there was black screen i suspected the gpu which was making problems before the fan came off so I replaced it with accelero l2 pro.I don't think it's the mobo problem because when i remove both ram sticks i get like 8 beeps until it restarts and everything repeats. But on the other hand how could it be hardware problem if comp autorecovered bios.I also thought about flashing the bios but the boot is set to floppy so i am not sure how would that work out.

I'm trying to do a startup repair of Windows 7 x64 on an SSD but can't boot from the CD-ROM while in AHCI mode. I have set CD-ROM at the top of the boot order in BIOS but this is just ignored and the computer boots from the SSD with the knackered version of W7x64. I read somewhere that when in AHCI mode, the BIOS boot order may include "CD-ROM" but it's not the real device anymore. I tried looking for the CD-ROM by its manufacturer name in the list under Hard Drives but it's not there either. So just how do I go about booting from the CD-ROM in AHCI mode? No problems booting if I set the BIOS back to IDE mode, install Windows 7 and then do the registry hack to install the AHCI drivers, but I'd like to be able to boot from the CD-ROM in AHCI mode.
P.S. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard and am using the latest BIOS version (F9D)

So my computer went into sleep mode.... its really hit or miss with this computer so when I finally get it back up and running, I will completely disable sleep mode.Sometimes i can click the mouse and it wakes up with no problem, but sometimes it would reboot on its own and just keep trying to boot and restart.... continuous boot loop.... so when i want to remedy this, I just clear the cmos by unplugging the power supply and disconnecting the cmos battery.... it always worked I tried to pull the battery and left it out for 60 minutes.. popped it back in and it won't let me get into bios. None of my keyboards will light up for me to hit delete to get into bios.... not even my PS2 keyboard.... it will just continue to turn on, and show the logo screen telling me to hit various keys for various functions and then it will reboot on its own and it will just continue to do this and will not let me hit a key to get into the BIOS screens

I recently got hit by a virus on my new pc. PC's that I have owned in the past I would boot into safe mode and fix. However, when I restart to hit f8, I do not see the BIOS. I know the computer brings it up b/c it doesn't boot into Windows 7. So I booted into Windows 7 normal, went to msconfig and told it to boot safely. I got no display at all now after rebooting. I can't get back into Windows 7 nor see the BIOS, or Safe Mode. I have tried more than one monitor. I do have dual graphics cards, so I do not know if that is causing the conflict or not.

Every time I boot my computer, it come up loading files, the open the boot recovery mode. If I leave it, it says that it fix one error, then it restarts and does the same again. The error was that it the boot.ini was missing. So I booted it up with ubuntu, and created an empty boot.ini file, then booted the minitool partition wizard (Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.) and configured the boot.ini. But still no luck. It's booting into recovery mode because that is the first partition.

I'm frankly not that familiar with Windows 7. Also, this isn't a computer that I used, so I'm not familiar with what exactly was happening, if anything, before the situation it's in now.My friend has the following system:Gateway NV7915uIntel Core i3 330M 2.13Ghz500 GB SATA HDD4 GB DDR3 SDRAMWindows 7 Home Premium 64 BitOn Start Windows Normally, it just freezes on "Starting Windows" I have left it like this for days with no progress. On Launch Startup Repair, "Windows is loading files..." OK Then when "Starting Windows" appears, BSOD:DRIVE_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALSTOP: 0x000000D1On Safe Mode, BSOD at classpnp.sys:PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREASTOP: 0x00000050On Debug Kernel, freezes on "Starting Windows"On Windows Home Premium 64-Bit Recovery Disc (I downloaded this, I did not make it from this system, the owner never did this), Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].... "Windows is loading files..." OK, Progress bar moves a bit and then:STOP: c00021a {Fatal System Error}The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000The system has been shut down.
If I use a Retail Windows 7 Disc, "Windows is loading files" OK, then "Starting Windows" the logo forms, and boom:STOP: 0x0000008EI took the HDD out of this system and popped it in my tower. I ran a virus scan (as expected, nothing found), ran an Advanced System Care 5 scan/cleanup. Then I ran a Check Disk (Checked - Automatically fix file system errors and Checked Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors), finished fine. no issues. All files are accessible and everything seems fine on the HDD when it's a slave in my tower. So at this point, since I cannot boot into any form of Windows or repair or command prompt that I am aware of, what can I do?

I have a 2 year old vaio that has i5 and 8 gb of ram. I have windows 7 professional x64. My computer froze while on the Internet, and when I manually shut it down and restarted it, it gave me two options. Start repair console, and start normally. When I started it normally, it froze on the windows logo. I restarted it, and tried recovery console, but it loads, then gives me an arrow with a background of blue and a bird on the right, which is windows 7's background when logging in. But it only shows this.I have tried safe mode, but that freezes on classpnp.sys and I have tried to boot from windows 7 recovery disk. I have also tried windows vista recovery disk. When the windows 7 disk booted, it loads and then asks for my country, but then again shows just a cursor.Blue screen of death error is unmountable boot volume.

I had windows vista 32 bit earlier. Then I got windows 7 professional upgrade in trial period. I didn't notice how it happened. Of course it must be my mistake. Now when i boot from windows 7 it shows 64 bit and in vista it shows 32 bit. The system asks before booting which one to choose. It's today only that I have installed but I am not facing any problem as such except that i need a product key within 30 days. Should i leave as it is or uninstall vista somehow. Would i be able to reboot my system using the 32 bit vista CD?

This morning I woke up and the first thing I always do is switch on my PC to check email and to have a quick chat with my friend who lives In Australia before it get's late over there. My PC was on, running S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat via steam at the time, whilst still talking to my friend in Australia. Whilst typing to him, my system locked up mid sentence. I left it for 15 minutes, got Coffee to wake up, still froze.. I had no choice to manually switch it off via the Power Button on the Tower. When I switch the tower back on, I had no Display on the screen. Now, this isn't actually the problem, I've fixed this kind of issue on a friends PC before and knew straight away my Memory Modules had just died. I removed the RAM, switched on, waited for the long Beep to confirm my Mobo was still breathing.. Placed one Module back in, black screen, tried the other etc etc.. Simple fix, get my spare RAM that I saved from an older build, stuck them in, powered up.
At this point I had to fix a corrupt winload.exe (Or similar) likely due to me having to turn the power off manually.. I hit the Recovery Console, let Window's do it stuff, corrupt file repaired, hello desktop..Just to confirm it wasn't a one-off, I Shutdown the system and powered it back on, still successfully reaching Desktop with no issues. Now this is where it gets weird.. I have a room I keep PC spares as well as my Anti-Static mats and junk. I took my PC to this room in order to change my RAM. After I got the PC working.. All I did was put the side panel back on, take my PC back to my desk in my Lounge where it always is and somehow, some way, in the time it took me to move the PC, despite having no power, Windows managed to Corrupt itself... Eh?
To clarify, I fixed my original issue by swapping out the dead RAM, Fixed a Corrupt File and then successfully booted to desktop. I had fixed the problem, but when I moved my PC back to where it lives, it no longer works. I get to "Windows is Starting" and it freezes.(On a side note: The PC was not knocked on the journey from one room to the next and yes I did double check to see if a cable had came loose. I have not added any additional peripherals, the PC is set up in the exact same way it was when I performed the original RAM Swap)
In an attempt to fix this I have so far, from the (F8) Advanced Options. Repair your Computer All I get is the usual black screen with "Windows is loading files..." with the white progress bar. The Progress Bar reaches full, but then nothing happens. It stays on the same screen and never progresses. I gave the process 15 minutes and still nothing..
Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)
Exactly the same as above.
Safe Mode
Gets stuck at ../disk.sys
Safe Mode with Networking

I've gotten to the point where I need to just reinstall windows completely on my Asus G74SX (too many problems, I want to start fresh.). I encounter an error 1029 with Asus's recovery disks that I made when I had windows working: it says it is recovering all the way to 100% then doesnt work. I am in the process of trying it again so I'll see if it actually managed to wipe my hard drive like it said it was doing, and maybe if it did actually work and reinstall windows. However, I'd like to be able to get into the recovery partition because I would prefer restoring it with Asus as they recommend me to. However, when I hit F9, their target to get there, it doesn't do anything and just reloads the boot screen, with the Asus logo on it. I don't have an actual Wndows recovery CD so that's not an option, and at this point since my hard drive has likely been wiped by these recovery DVDs, I don't think going into Ubuntu and fixing the MBR will do me much good anymore. It may be worth noting that before I last restarted, I marked the Windows partition as active because of a tutorial here, making it so that recovery partition isn't active anymore.

I am running an Advent desktop PC and its stats are as follows; Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit.The problem I am having is when ever i boot up the computer it shows the Advent logo-screen where I can access the boot menu etc but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor/underscore flashing in the top left... This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual. It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.

before the blue screen i had windows 7.
I have a sony vaio laptop. After having a blue screen appeared and computer turning off by itself i cant login to safe mode. I was able to go to f2 bios but not to the advance booting options f8 or shift+f8.
so after tuning off i tried turning on the laptop. sony logo appeared and then theres was a black screen with a small white line blinking and that was the farthest it could go. So i tried formatting and installing a fresh copy of windows 8 and for my surprise I was able to logon into windows again.
The problem now is, that im still not being able to login into safe mode or adavance booting options.is there a way to do a complete hardware diagnosis?

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.
Ghost Shot> This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing restores from Ghost 15,etc. Anyway, ghost was backing up my system C: drive before last week. I have yet to even try and use Ghost to see if it would successfully restore my OS but I've been using it to backup my C: drive anyways. Prior to last week it could backup my C: drive fine. I might try a Ghost restore point from a few weeks back before this happened but not sure yet[CODE]

I have the most strange issue with my keyboard. It works in Bios, it works in safe mode, it works when I try to repair windows (repair files are added to a partition on the laptop - its how I bought it) but whenever windows boots normally, the keyboard won't work.It is a built in keyboard to my laptop and the fact it works everywhere else tells me it's fine (just in case connectors were damaged I stripped it and had a look anyway).Things I have tried
1) uninstalling the driver in safe mode - this reinstalls when I reboot but still no joy. The strange part is I do not think the driver files are corrupted because safe mode and normal mode seems to use the same drivers (standard ps2).
2) The manufacturer (HP Compaq) has no specific drivers which leads me to believe that standard ps2 is right but I reinstalled quick buttons -no joy
3) there are no conflicts or yellow exclamation point in device manager
4) the only thing I did was upgrade my AV (AVG 2013) so uninstalled -no joy.
5) ran AV and MBAM and ran TDSS killer just in case - no virus or malware
6) cleaned registry with Ccleaner -no joy
7) no processes or startup items are unusual but I have killed /disabled just in case-no joy
8) did a system restore (no joy)
9) I had backed up the registry ages ago so I tried that -no joy
10) Tried on battery and plugged in no battery in case the power is an issue -no joy
11) reflashed Bios - no joy
12 - All language sttings looked ok
A USB keyboard works if plugged in Just in case I did run hijack this too

I got a Dell Optiplex GX520. When I try to boot, after the windows logo comes on screen, the pc goes into sleep mode. This also happens in safe mode. I found out that it had a faulty HDD. So I replaced it. However when I try to start from Windows install disk it goes into sleep mode right after it shows de Loading Windows logo. I tried to go in to the bios to load the optimized settings but when I press F2 to load the system setup the computer goes into sleep mode.
So basically I cant do anything to boot or to re-install Windows.
some other things I tried:
- check PSU with PSU tester: PSU ok
- boot without DVD station: still going into sleep mode
- boot in safe mode: sleep mode again
- last known good configuration: sleep mode
- swapped RAM: still same issue... sleep mode FTL
I cant test GFX cause its on board and theres no AGP or PCI-e slot on the mobo.

my computer was getting too hot i went into the BIOS and changed a few things like turning off the auto-controlled fan sensors, FSB i put down to 200 and the CPU voltage I changed to 1.0Volts. I started up windows again. This time though, the option for "hibernate" had disappeared. So i looked up how to put it back on. and changed the power settings to "never" allow "hybrid sleep". So now i have the option to hibernate again. But the strange part was this. When I put my computer to sleep now. It apparently shuts down fully. (no more blinking light) then i turn it on and it re awakes from sleep. It's actually nice to have it this way. I tested it to see if i could disconnect the power fully and then still restore it back from sleep. Sure enough it lets me disconnect the power for up to 5 seconds then i plug it back in and it will still restore back from sleep. I guess my question is. Is the computer using even less power now to keep the information on the RAM. I read somewhere that on average your computer uses about 6 watts while in sleep mode.

I am choosing which OS to boot by changing the boot order in my BIOS. To me, this seems clean and simple. I built 32 bit XP on one disk, then removed that disk from my system, installed a different disk, and built 64 bit Windows 7.
When both disks are installed, I change the boot order to select the OS I want, and each OS sees and can use the files on either disk.
Am I asking for trouble here, or is this as clean as I think it is? What I want is one set of user document files which can be used from whichever OS has been booted.

Using a Advent Modena M200 Blue, running Windows 7 Home Premium. I had windows start-up problems in that windows would not start normally. So tried hitting f8 and fixing startup environment. But this reported that the problem could not be fixed. Then decided to boot from the Advent recovery DVD's made when I initially purchased the notebook.Booting from the DVD, I chose fully install windows option, then "full destructive recovery". First time I ran this I had the option to select run the recovery from the hard disk or the recovery DVD. I chose DVD.Then I get the following screen - Full Destructive Recovery in progress
1 Preparing hard disk drive
2 copying files ...(5/4) 16% at this stage I get prompted to insert disk2 (of the recovery DVD)Then after about 30mins I get prompted to re-insert disk 1 to continue. The copying files continues with the following progress (8/4) 76% (9/4) 11%.The 9/4 makes little sense. You would think that after 4/4. It would move to the next stage which is stage 3 - Installing windows. Then stage 4 Installing hard drive recovery, then stage 5 finalising recovery. But at around 11% of 9/4 a window pops-up with the following-error:Error: Windows.wim missing
